I am most delighted to welcome you to t hthis historic occasion of the 10

Convocation Ceremony of Covenant thUniversity, marking the release of the 10

batch of Eagles. The number 10 is very significant as it connotes perfection or completion. This, therefore, makes to d a y 's r i t e o f pa s s a g e , w h i c h convocation ceremony has come to be known in the history of the University system globally, significant.

It is worthy of note that the Hand of God has been most evident in Covenant University across all parameters of academic growth. By the virtue of God's faithfulness and relentless pursuit of excellence, the University has continued to move closer to the realization of the visionary mandate of becoming one of the top ten Universities in the World by the Year 2022 (I of 10 in 10).

In the area of research, the University has established 21 multidisciplinary re sea rch c l u s te r s and i s abou t completing the construction of a 6-storey structure that will accommodate the Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery as well as endowed Centers of Excellence in B i o te c h n o l o g y, B i o i n f o r m a t i c s , Information and Communicat ion Technology for Systems Research and Corporate Governance.

Further to our efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning; in the course of this academic session, the U n i v e r s i t y c o m m e n c e d t h e implementation of its mobile learning project whereby each student is able to access learning resource materials anywhere and anytime on campus, through a mobile tablet that is loaded with lecture notes and have online access to library resource materials. In the same vein, all our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art digital interactive boards to enhance teaching and learning.

Great leaders are not those with chains of degrees, but those who change

the world. As a visionary university committed to raising a new generation of leaders, our graduates are not only intellectually equipped to be experts in their fields, they are also imbued with leadership skills. In addition to their respective degrees, those graduating t o d a y w i l l a l s o b e r e c e i v i n g Certificate/Diploma in Leadership.

Our experience has been most humbling in the current academic

stsession. The University was ranked 1 position in Nigeria and West Africa

thand 15 in Africa in the February 2015 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Similarly, in the 2015 University Repository ranking, Covenant University emerged as Number One in Nigeria, Number One in West Africa and 13th on the entire Continent. This means our institution is the best in Nigeria, West Africa and one of the best on the continent, in both Webometrics and Repository.

This year also, the University had the highest listing of leading Nigerian Scientists by Cybermetrics. The

University produced 78 out of the 500 Nigerian Scientists l isted. Cybermetrics is a world renowned International Peer-reviewed Journal, published in Madrid, Spain.

In faraway Seoul, South Korea, Covenant University bagged Gold and Bronze Awards for inventing Eco Friendly Energy Retention Bag (ERB) and a Solar Powered Weather Station respec t i ve l y, i n the recent l y concluded 'Korean Association of Women Inventors Exhibition (KWIA)'.

Equally, our graduates have continued to validate the University's unique vision in different spheres of life. This year also, our First Class G r a d u a t e s d o m i n a t e d t h e Presidential Special Scholarship for Innovat ion and Development (PRESSID) for the third time running. The University produced 11 First Class graduates among the 102 successful candidates for the 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6 s c h e m e o f t h e programme, as published by the National Universities Commission. It should be recalled that Covenant University came tops in the maiden edition of the Scheme in the 2013/2014 academic session and also produced 10 percent of the success fu l candidates in the 2014/2015 edition.

These and many others are the evidence of our success story in Covenant University and also a pointer that the university's vision is being realized. We will continue to take steps towards the great future we envisioned in order to rewrite the story of university education in the Continent.

Furthermore, character building

Release of Eagles 2015

It is with a deep sense of appreciation

to God that I welcome you to the 10th

Convocation Ceremony of Covenant

University. To us, this is another

Covenant fulfilled between God and

the University on one hand and

between the University and students

on the other.

The University has continued to blaze

the trail and take the lead in the

tertiary education landscape of

Nigeria. To the Glory of God, the

University has remained the flagship of

university education, not only in

Nigeria, but also in Africa.

Notable awards and laurels won by the

University include: the emergence of

the University as number 1 in Nigeria

and West Africa as well as number 15

in Africa, according to the latest

Webometrics Ranking of February

2015. Secondly, the University retained

her leadership posit ion in the

Presidential Special Scholarship for

I n n o va t i o n a n d D e ve l o p m e n t

(PRESSID) by producing at least 10% of

all successful (First Class) candidates in

about 138 Universities in Nigeria since

the inception of the Scheme till date.

Indeed, this is a true attestation to the

quality of education offered in

Covenant University. Just to mention a

few.

According to President Barak Obama,

"...the strength of a nation's economy

is inextricably linked to the strength of

her education system." Thus, it is

unequivocally clear that Nigeria may

institution to be relevant to societal

development. This is another area

that d is t inguishes Covenant

University from others. Since last

year (2014), all graduates of the

University have acquired at least a

C e r t i f i c a t e i n L e a d e r s h i p

Development in addition to their

respective degrees in their various

disciplines.

Also, this year, we had the 2nd

International Conference on

African Development Issues

(ICADI). We had another Nobel

Laureate, Prof. Alvin Roth, from the

University of Stanford, as the

keynote speaker. With the two

conferences, we have been able to

proffer solutions to a number of

developmental issues in Nigeria

and Africa.

University, we are building future

ready students and today, to the

glory of God, we are releasing

future ready graduates.

It is on this note that I wish to

congratulate the graduands of

today, having been certified fit

entrepreneurially as well as in

leadership skills. I congratulate

you, your parents as well as our

prospective candidates of the

2015/16 academic session for

making the wisest choice of your

life by coming to Covenant

University. No doubt, as you have

found out, Covenant University is

one of the very best universities in

the world for future leaders.

PROFESSOR ADEBAYO OLUKOSHI DIRECTOR, UNIDEP, SENEGAL

(Keynote Speaker)

Adebayo Olukoshi is a Research

Professor of International Economic

Relations. Born in Jos, Plateau State, he

had his primary education at Methodist

School in Kaduna, his secondary

education at Federal Government

College, Sokoto, his advanced level

education at School of Basic Studies,

Zaria, and his undergraduate degree at

Ahmadu Bello University, also in Zaria.

Following his National Youth Service

programme, which he undertook also at

Ahmadu Bello University as a Graduate

Assistant, he won both a Federal

Government of Nigeria and a Leeds

University Research Scholarship to

undertake his doctoral Studies at the

Univers i ty of Leeds in England.

Professor Olukoshi went into

secondary school in FGC Sokoto, having

successfully passed the national

common entrance for secondary

education in class five, in primary

school. He completed his secondary

educat ion w i th a D iv i s ion One

Distinction in the West Africa School

Certificate. He also won the trophy for

the best all-round graduating student at

the School of Basic Studies; he

completed his advanced studies also

with distinction, winning the third place

prize for the best all-round graduating

student and the first place winner in the

Humanities Section of the graduating

class.

Professor Olukoshi completed his

Bache lo r of Sc ience degree in

International Studies from Ahmadu

Bello University with first class honours.

He was also the winner of the Faculty of

Arts and Social Science Dean's prize for

the best graduating student of his year

in the Faculty. Following his National

Youth Service, Leeds University was to

admit him directly into its doctoral

programme based on the performance

registered in his undergraduate

transcript. Professor Olukoshi was

exempted from first undertaking a

Masters degree before going into the

doctoral programme. The exemption

came with a full university scholarship

for his doctoral studies; he was one of

three recipients of the prestigious

scholarship awarded to the three

topmost intakes into the Leeds

University doctoral school at the time.

Following his Ph.D, which he

completed in a record three years,

Professor Olukoshi was awarded the

first Rhodes African Post-Doctoral

Research Fel lowship at Oxford

University. He exercised the fellowship

alongside his first employment as a

Research Fellow at the Nigerian

Institute of International Affairs in

Lagos. In a record period of six years,

Professor Olukoshi was appointed to

the Professorial grade at the Institute.

He also served as Divisional Head for

International Economic Relations and,

subsequently, Acting Director of

Research.

Professor Olukoshi has also, during

his career, served as Senior Research

Fellow and Research Programme Officer

at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala,

Sweden; Senior Programme Staff at the

inter-governmental South Centre in

Geneva, Switzerland; Executive Secretary

of the Pan-African Council for the

Development of Social Science Research

in Africa(CODESRIA), Dakar, Senegal;

Director of the United Nations African

Institute for Economic Development and

Planning, Dakar, Senegal; and Interim

Director of the African Governance

Institute, Dakar, Senegal. Recently, he

was named the Director, Regional Office

for Africa and Liaison Office to the

African Union of the inter-governmental

International Institute for Democracy

and Electoral Assistance.

Professor Olukoshi has held many

residential research fellowships around

the world over the last 25 years. He is the

author and editor of 14 books, 10

monographs, and over 200 book

chapters and journal articles. He has

served or is serving on the boards of

m a n y i n t e r n a t i o n a l j o u r n a l s ,

international research institutes, and

global think tanks. Currently, he is

serving as the global chairperson of the

third edition of the World Social Science

Forum coming up in Durban, South

Africa, in September 2015. He has served

as external examiner in Universities in

Africa and Europe and has examined

doctoral theses also in various African

and European universities. He was

named a distinguished visiting Professor

at Rhodes University in South Africa for a

three-year tenure and has delivered

numerous keynote addresses at

different scholarly, policy, and advocacy

fora around the world, including the

2014 Tana Forum Meles Zenawi

Memorial Lecture on the life and times of

t h e l a t e N e l s o n M a n d e l a .

Peter A. Okebukola is Professor of

Science and Computer Education and

a specialist in quality assurance in

higher education. After his Bachelor's

degree in 1973, he earned a PhD from

the University of Ibadan, followed by

s p e c i a l i s e d t r a i n i n g a t t h e

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

(M.I.T.) and Harvard University both in

C a m b r i d g e , U S A . H e w a s a

f o u n d a t i o n s t a f f o f U N E S CO

International Institute for Capacity

Building in Africa (IICBA) in Addis

Ababa.

Professor Okebukola is noted as the

First African to win the UNESCO

Kalinga Prize for the Communication

of Science. He is a Fellow and Member

of the Board of Directors of the

International Academy of Education

whose membership is restricted to

distinguished professors of education

in the world. He is a member of the

Executive Board of the International

Association for Research in Science

Teaching. He was also the African

Representative and Member of the

Board of Directors of the International

Council of Associations for Science

Education. He is a Fellow, Life Member

and Past President of the Science

Teachers Association of Nigeria as well

as of the National Association for

Environmental Education. He has won

several international gold medals in

science and computer education. He

was a Visiting Professor at the Curtin

University of Technology, Australia.

His research efforts have resulted in

over 160 internationally published

works and over 190 national and

i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o n f e r e n c e

presentations. He has given keynote

addresses in major international

conferences in over 80 countries in all

regions of the world. Many of his

publications can be found in the

world's top 10 science education,

c o m p u t e r e d u c a t i o n a n d

environmental education journals

and he is among one of the most-

cited researchers in his field in Africa.

Some of his works on co-operative

learning, metacognition, and eco-

culture and science have appeared in

the American Biology Teacher, School

Science and Mathematics, Science

Education, Journal of Research in

Science Teaching, European Journal of

Science Education (International

Journal of Science Education) Journal

of Social Psychology, International

Journal of Educology, Research in

Sc ience Educat ion , Human

Relations, Educational Research,

Some of the major finding of his

r e s e a r c h i n c o m p u t e r s i n

education have appeared in

of Educational Technology Systems.

He is the immediate past Executive

S e c re t a r y o f t h e N a t i o n a l

Universities Commission (NUC).

He has been Chairman of Council

of several universities including

Osun Sta te Un ive r s i t y and

currently Chairman of Council of

Crawford University. He has been

awarded a number of honorary

D.Sc degrees. He is the Executive

Chairman of Okebukola Science

Foundation which supports quality

teaching, learning and research in

science and technology. He is the

current Executive President of the

Global University Network for

Innovation (GUNI)-Africa that was

established by UNESCO in 1999. In

January 2015, he was elected

Chairman of the International

Quality Group of the US-based

Council for Higher Education

Accreditation. Born on February

17, 1951, Professor Peter A.

Okebukola is the recipient of the

National Honour of the Officer of

the Order of the Federal Republic-
