In recognition and appreciation of enormous contributions to HIOBS, Jim Cabot received the 2014 Distinguished Service Oar Award at the 50th Annual General Meeting on August 23, 2014.
2014 Oar Award
Dear Friends:
In 2014, we are blessed to have the opportunity to look astern and celebrate 50 years of history and accomplishments of Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. It’s always easier to evaluate a helmsman’s course by looking at the swerves of his wake than by tracking the compass course he is attempting to steer. I think 2014 presented us with both perspectives.
HIOBS is on an excellent track.
We are focused on what we do in the field and on our courses. And we are doing it really well. To guide our expedition, we have strong and experienced leadership teams in place at all levels of the organization and we have demonstrated results since we became, again, an independent Outward Bound School in 2012.
But please allow me a moment to look at our wake, and our helms-people for the last 50 years.
Peter Willauer built the boat, set the course and captained the “early” watch through the first 25 years of the School. Joan Welsh and Galen Todd then took the con through the 1990s and capably steered HIOBS forward through stormy seas. Thank you, Peter, Joan and Galen. And, as with all expeditions, we had wonderful crew along the way pulling on oars and doing the work that kept the school moving forward.
During the course of our 50 years there was only once when we were at that “crux moment,” a moment when the survival of our school was in jeopardy. In that moment, we had overwhelming support from our community—a network of alumni, donors, current and former staff members—who dug in and worked hard for us to pull through the waves. But there were three individuals I’d like to recognize in this space, who I believe if they had not taken on a leadership role at that moment, I would not have the privilege to pen the intro to this 50th Anniversary Annual Report. Kaki Smith singlehandedly refused to let HIOBS sink. She recruited Jim Cabot to be our Board Chair in 2012 and who has led our school with a strong and focused hand. Finally, we would not be a school without Rusty Kellogg and his un-ending and overwhelming support for our school. Thank you Kaki, Jim and Rusty.
HIOBS is a force in education. We are needed. For 50 years we have made a difference. We need all of you to help support the next 50 years.
Serving with you,
Eric DennyExecutive Director

In 2014, more than 800 students of all ages completed a Hurricane Island Outward Bound School course. Our students sailed, backpacked, paddled and climbed through the wilderness classrooms of Maine, Florida, New Hampshire, Panama and Costa Rica. Since 1964, Hurricane Island Outward Bound School has taught through the wilderness classroom of the mountains and the sea to show generations of men and woment that there is more in them—more strength, more tenacity, more compassion—than they ever thought possible. More than 100,000 students of all ages and from all backgrounds have experienced a life-changing Outward Bound course with us. In 2014, we completed our fiftieth year as an educational institution dedicated to creating more resilient, more compassionate leaders.
There is more in us than we know. If we could be made to see it; perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.
–Kurt Hahn, Outward Bound Founder

OUTWARD BOUND PROFESSIONAL Outward Bound Professional (“OBP”) creates custom-tailored experiential learning programs for businesses to forge an advantageous culture, untangling thorny management challenges, and improving performance. We achieve these results by using our seventy years of experience of working on behaviors, inspiring character and group development through active learning expeditions.
In 2014, OBP delivered more than 25 programs to companies with businesses ranging from the banking sector to the outdoor industry to healthcare.
CUSTOM GROUP EDUCATION PROGRAMSEach year we offer custom programs for intact groups, such as schools, businesses, membership associations and other nonprofit organizations. Our Custom Programs team works directly with the course organizers to identify key learning objectives for each group of students and builds an Outward Bound course that best fits their goals. Custom group programs can take place at one of our basecamps or at a location specific to the partnering organization. Many of these programs are also supported by charitable giving on behalf of the students.
In 2014, 270–or 32%–of our Outward Bound alumni completed their experience as part of a custom group education program.

We celebrated a milestone in 2014: 50 years of changing lives through challenge and discovery. Hundreds of HIOBS community members joined us for an Anniversary Bash in Lincolnville, Maine, and hundreds more joined us and the Hurricane Island Foundation on Hurricane Island for a weekend reunion and lobster bake. To those who joined us in person and to those who continue to provide their support through generous donations, thank you for being a part of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School family and for believing in the magic of Outward Bound. We’ve been “on course” for an extraordinary 50 years, and your help is needed for us to make it another 50.
We are proud and honored to share the list of names on the following pages all those individuals, foundations and corporations who made a charitable contribution to Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in 2014. Every dollar contributed is used to put a student on an Outward Bound course and help us continue our mission to change lives through challenge and discovery.
