IN AND AROUND KING’S LYNN
IN AND AROUNDDOWNHAM MARKET
Dating back to Saxon times, Down-ham Market is a gateway to West Norfolk and one of the oldest mar-ket towns in Norfolk. Immediately identifiable by the splendid black and white clock tower, the town retains a really intimate feel, with many fine buildings and a bustling market on Fridays and Saturdays. With a lovely mix of many local inde-pendent shops, friendly cafes and pubs the town is a real pleasure to stroll around and explore. Visit the new Discover Downham Heritage Centre, open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As well as being a great place to visit, the town is the ideal centre for visiting and enjoying a variety of attractions and activities in the sur-rounding Fens. Just south of the town near the charming village of Denver is the fascinating Denver Sluice complex, instrumental in the drainage and wa-ter management of the Fens and a fascinating place to watch the boats, have a picnic or pop into the local pub. Denver marks the northern end of the atmospheric Ouse Washes with the New Bedford and Old Bedford Rivers which cross the Fens. For more information visit. www.ousewashes.org.ukChildren will love visiting Church Farm at Stow Bardolph with its indoor ‘treehouse’ play area, animal encounters, tractor rides, outdoor play areas, gifts and tea room. Also nearby is the renowned WWT Welney Wetland Centre with its wetland environment, wildlife and easy access visitor centre. Visit in winter to marvel at thousands of birds who use it as their winter home, or watch out for wetland safaris in spring and summer. Other great attrac-tions nearby include the Tudor moated manor house at Oxburgh Hall and beautiful Gooderstone Water Gardens.Downham Market provides the perfect base for exploring The Fen Rivers Way walking trail, which follows The River Great Ouse north to King’s Lynn and south towards Ely. It is also the perfect base for enjoying the excellent bird watching, angling, sailing and golf opportunities nearby.
