Welcome
A very warm welcome to SES Industry Days 2018. Since our conference last year, we have continued to embrace new technologies and deliver optimised products and services to our customers worldwide.
We recently launched three new GEO satellites and four additional MEO satellites. Our SES-12 satellite is scheduled for launch on a SpaceX Falcon rocket from Cape Canaveral at the end of this month. Since April this year Steve Collar, who previously ran O3b Networks and most recently was responsible for all of SES’s connectivity business, is now the CEO of SES.
SES Video now transmits more than 7,700 TV channels, of which over 2,600 are in HD quality. The number of commercial Ultra HD channels has increased to 32. Today, more than 351 million households rely on SES Video to deliver their content to audiences worldwide.
SES Networks is experiencing significant growth in particular, due to its strong performance in the aeronautical and government business segments.
For Industry Days 2018 we have prepared an exciting programme with topics covering satellite technology, video broadcast, IP networks and consumer electronics.
We will kick-off Day 1 with a keynote speech outlining the role of satellite in tomorrow’s world. We will then cover the new services that our recently launched satellites will enable and how SES is going to approach the design of its Next Generation satellites.
In the afternoon, we will discuss how video operators are adapting to the acceleration of technology innovation in the media business and how cloud computing is impacting the business.
To wrap up Day 1, we will examine the latest generation of video optimisation codecs and tools.
Day 2 will start with a Master Class about High Dynamic Range (HDR) presented by Sony. As Industry Days has always focused on technology innovation, we will explore new technologies, Artificial Intelligence and innovation in the area of satellite DTH for the remainder of the day.

ALTICAST Actionable intelligence: Data platform + offering of Argus-BIS
Argus-BIS (Business Intelligence System) is a marketing platform based on Big Data and AI analytics, which gives service operators insights to increase ARPU. Argus-BIS gives information regarding content recommendation, promotion insight, targeted ads and a personalised UI. The system consists of three major solutions data collection, data analytics, and offering. With the data collected on subscriber and various statistical information, we can discover marketing insights as a result of analytics on content, product, and subscriber behaviour. Additionaly, the solution provides dynamic UI, recommendations, and marketing campaigns. In the demo, Alticast will show Dynamic UI, an offering based on micro-segmentation of subscribers.

SED SYSTEMSMultichannel Modulators
SED will demonstrate unique multichannel modulators, Hercules and Defender, that generate multiple DVB-S/S2/S2X carriers from a space-efficient chassis. The multichannel approach provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional modulators and saves both space and power consumption in the equipment room. The carriers will be displayed using our Decimator spectrum analyzer unit that incorporates carrier monitoring capability.

SNT LAB / UNIVERSITY OF LUXEMBOURG SERENADE: Precoding for Multi-beam Satellites
SERENADE is a precoding demonstrator for multi-beam satellite systems. This technique exploits the constructive interference among multiuser links, and gives a phenomenal improvement in throughput, availability and energy efficiency. The complete end-to-end hardware emulation of a 6x6 system (six satellite beams) is implemented in SDR platforms at an IF band. The communication chain starts with a precoding-enabled gateway that injects six transmission streams into a 6x6 MIMO satellite channel emulator. The emulator generates the MIMO interference and the imperfections of a realistic communication payload. Finally, a set of six user terminals (UT) closes the loop.

WORK MICROWAVEAdvanced Satcom Equipment
WORK Microwave shows a Multichannel Ka-band frequency upconverter suitable for high band- and high-throughput applications. We will also display a DVB-S2X AX-60 IP modem together with the new A-series wideband IP trunking modem, AX-80. These units support DVB-S2X standard mode, while special versions support Annex M time-slicing and Annex E superframing, and can be used as modulator only. The flexible A-Series architecture will also support future operational modes.

NEWTECChannel Bonding for UHD / IP-based news gathering; OU Flex by SES
In today’s world where consumers are expecting to be able to view ultra-high definition programs, broadcasters’ choosing to deliver this content over satellite are seeing increasing pressure. Due to the use of 4K and HDR, these next-generation television broadcasts require higher bitrates and significantly more bandwidth. Therefore, new technologies which provide broadcasters with efficiency gains are incredibly important to ensure effective space segment usage. The latest DVB-S2X transmission standard – which Newtec played a leading role in developing – introduced the concept of channel bonding allowing a single DTH transport stream to be split and carried over up to three satellite transponders.
