• “Typologisk seria3on och datering av de äldre runinskriAerna.” • • Introduk3on • Sy;et med denna text är a? redogöra för de äldre runinskri;ernas problema%k, hur de ordnas i seria%on rent typologiskt, och
hur denna seria%on kan användas %ll a? datera förändringar i de äldre runinskri;erna.
utveckling den enda möjliga metoden a? spåra förändring i runinskri;erna under 500-‐talet fram %ll 800-‐talet.

What is a seria3on – and what is it good for?
• Seria%on is a method to track change in the material world
• Besides tracking change, diagonal seria6on also shows correspondence or similari%es between various phenomena.
• A correspondence analysis is the logical conclusion of a series of steps of diagonal seria%on
What goes into a first seria3on of runic graphemes?
• 1. A minimum of 100 entries with at least three different variables.
• 2. Each variable must have two corresponding variables among the other 99 entries, that is, more than just a minimal pair.
• Example: a runic inscrip%on alu would fit these criteria.
• It would qualify as an entry with the three variables a1, l1, u1 – and there would be a number of other entries with a corresponding set of variables.
What does not?
• ”All runic objects”…
A minimum of three similar contexts, e.g. graves, each with a runic object, where the graves contain two other things that match the contents of two other graves…. – To compile a seria%on with the c. 90 runic graves one would need another few thousand graves….
What does not?
• ”All Style I relief brooches with runes”…
A minimum of 100 brooches with corresponding variables are needed. Since they are composed of so many different variables, only a regional appraisal of brooches is possible. There are currently less than 80 relief brooches in Scandinavia…

• 2. The likelihood of new discoveries of unaMested sound values for already exis3ng variables
Example: less than 0.7 ‰ likelihood that a new, unknown sound value for an old variable would appear in a new cluster, because 3 new entries with lines of 147 squares each would have to meet in 1 new column of the matrix, now consis%ng of a total 7,926 squares.
What can be ascertained from the second seria3on?
Three ”discoveries” lacking minimal pairs
• w = ”p” Watchfield case-‐fing (Odenstedt 1990)
• j4 (A) = ”z” Sö 32 Skåäng (Looijenga 1997) • d3 = ”H” Finsta i Skederid (Källström 2007)
