Thank you for your interest in The Drowsy Chaperone. Below you will find audition and callback information. Solo auditions will be virtual, and callbacks will be held January 13 & 14 after school on the stage from 2:40-7:00.
Important Details: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be running our show a little differently than normal. We will have two
casts of about 13 each. This will help us limit the number of students in rehearsals and at show nights. Some
roles may be double cast (one actor appears in both casts). Because of the limited number of spots available
and the content of the show, this audition will be open to High School students only. There are two parts to
the audition: the dance portion and the individual monologue/song audition. You must complete both to be
considered for casting. During callbacks, we will be strongly enforcing social distancing and mask wearing.
Failure to follow these rules will affect casting decisions. Our top priority is student safety, and we need to
select an ensemble that will take this seriously, as well.
Before Your Audition: Your audition application is due BEFORE the week of auditions. Audition applications will be posted in the
Casteel Theatre Company Google Classroom. The class code for the Google Classroom is: cu76vo2. Your
application will include a COVID waiver which must be signed by your guardian. This form can be found in the
Google Classroom. You must submit a PDF or a .doc of the waiver to your application. You must have your
audition application turned in by Monday, January 11th at 9 pm. If we do not have your audition application
by that time, you will not be able to audition. *If you need extra time, please contact Mrs. Pitner ASAP!
Your Individual Audition: Your individual audition will be performed on Flipgrid. The link will be posted the first week of January.
Individual auditions will close on Monday, January 11th at 9 pm. Auditions that are submitted after that time
will not be accepted. Your recorded audition should flow just like a normal audition – please slate at the
beginning, then perform your pieces, then end with a “thank you.” Please film your audition in one take so
that we can judge transitions and professionalism.
You will need to prepare:
• a 30-45 second monologue – from a published play or musical
• a 30-45 second (16 bar) song
o You must sing with a karaoke track/accompaniment. You can play this from your phone or
other music device.
o select a song from a Broadway show – do not do a pop song! Pop music will not highlight your
voice in the way that we need to hear it.
o We recommend testing your microphone/sound with the music prior to submitting your
Flipgrid.
• be comfortable with “Toledo Surprise” – will be used for the dance audition
The Drowsy Chaperone Audition Packet
Individual monologue and song auditions will take place via Flipgrid. Please select material that reflects the
character you are auditioning for, as well as the genre of the show. Your monologue and song will be viewed
by an audition panel consisting of the directors and other school personnel. This year because the selection
process will be more difficult, we are also inviting theatre teachers from outside of our school to be part of our
panel.
If you do not know how to pick a monologue, do not worry – there is more information in the packet. You can
also see Mrs. Pitner or Mrs. Clausen for additional help with selecting a monologue or song.
The Dance Audition: This year, the dance portion of the audition will be virtual. In the CTC Google Classroom, links have been
posted for the choreography for “Toledo Surprise.” Our choreography team has created multiple videos
showing different angles, as well as a step-by-step guide to the choreography.
You are expected to learn the choreography and record yourself performing it. Your recording will be
submitted via Flipgrid. When you record, please make sure that your camera is set up so that we can see your
entire body. We are asking that you sing the sections of the song while you dance. Please dance/sing along to
the Original Broadway Cast recording of “Toledo Surprise.” Remember that we are not looking to see if you
are the most amazing dancer of all time, we are looking to see if you tell the story. Facial expression is a must!
Dance auditions must be submitted to the Flipgrid by Monday, January 11th at 9 pm. Failure to have your
recording in by that time will result in you not being able to audition. If you run into technological difficulties,
it is your responsibility to reach out to Mrs. Pitner to find a solution.
Callbacks The callback list will be posted on our Casteel Theatre Company website (http://cusd80.com/Page/85426) at 8
pm on January 12, as well as in the Google Classroom. Callbacks are Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday,
January 14 from 2:40-7:30 onstage. We will post a list on Wednesday night of the people we would like to see
again on Thursday. On these days, you will be assigned seats in the house to ensure social distancing. When
you enter, please bring all of your personal belongings to your seat.
For callbacks, the production panel will be trying to fit people in roles. You will be asked to do acting and
singing. You may also be asked to dance; come dressed accordingly. For the acting portion, you will be asked
to do cold reads from the script. It will help you to do research into the show – what is the play about? Who
are the characters? What are their relationships? The internet has a great deal of information about this show
and the more information you have, the better prepared you will be for your audition. For the singing portion,
you will find a list of callback songs on the CTC website. We recommend you review them prior to callbacks.
You may be asked to perform multiple songs if we are considering you for multiple roles.
For callbacks:
• Wear comfortable clothing that does not limit movement as well as proper footwear. Black movement
clothing is preferred.
• No slippers, flip flops, or bare feet. Tennis shoes, character shoes, or dance shoes are preferred.
On the day of callbacks, bring homework to work on, snacks, and water to keep you hydrated and energized.
Make sure to follow all social distancing and mask-wearing expectations. Masks will be worn during the dance
auditions, with breaks as needed. It is recommended to bring an extra mask or two as well as plenty of water.
The cast list will be posted on our website by 9 pm on Friday, January 15. It will also be posted on Mrs.
Pitner’s door. Please sign the cast list on Monday if you accept your role in the show.
Rehearsal/Show Information Rehearsals for Drowsy will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Times will vary, so please see the rehearsal
calendar. We have built in a time for students to do homework and seek tutoring from 2:30-3:00. Rehearsals
will run longer as we get closer to show dates. Additionally, we may need to hold rehearsal on the Saturdays
leading up to the show. If you are unable to attend rehearsals, this may not be the show for you. Please list
any conflicts on your audition sheet. Conflicts do affect casting, and unexcused absences will not be tolerated
because of the negative impact on the production and scheduling process. Your attendance is even more
crucial this year with such a small cast. More than one unexcused absence or more than two excused absences
may result in your termination from the show.
Our attendance policy:
• An absence will be considered excused if your parent/guardian emails Mrs. Pitner prior to rehearsal,
and the reason for your absence includes serious illness or a family emergency.
• Please avoid scheduling appointments during rehearsal times, as those will not be considered an
excused absence.
• Any absences during dress/tech weeks will result in your removal from the show.
• If a student is quarantined, these rules will be adjusted. Students in quarantine must attend a Google
Meet for rehearsal so that they can learn what is being covered.
If cast, your parents/guardians will be asked to help. There are a variety of jobs that we need parent help for,
including box office, providing dinner for dress rehearsals, assisting with tech, backstage help, and more! It
means a lot to the students when their parents are involved, and it helps the directors out a TON!
Finally, all members of the cast and crew must pay the $25 drama club fee in the bookstore. If you have
already paid the fee this year, you are good to go! The fee is nonrefundable and will need to be paid in the
bookstore no later than January 22. Failure to pay this fee will result in your termination from cast or crew
unless prior arrangement have been made with Mrs. Pitner. Students (and parents!) can also purchase a show
shirt for $10 in the bookstore as we get closer to the show date. This is optional, but a great way to show
support for our show!
All cast and technicians will be expected to attend the first read-through on January 20 from 2:30-6:30. At
each rehearsal, students are expected to bring water, snacks, and a pencil (or five!). Students are required to
have a binder for their scripts that they bring to each rehearsal. Students are also required to follow the cast
Remind and to sign up for the show Google Classroom. You will receive more information about this if you are
cast.
Our show has the honor of participating in the ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards in May
2021. By auditioning for this show, you are agreeing to participate in the awards ceremony if one of your
numbers is selected to perform. This will require additional rehearsals in May to prepare for the performance
on the Gammage stage!! All cast is invited to attend the awards ceremony regardless of if your number is
performing. This is a huge honor for our program and a super fun day – we look forward to participating! More
information to come.

COVID-19 Mitigation Plan Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have created a plan in an attempt to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and
guests. To ensure that all parties involved understand the rules that will be enforced, we are including our plan below. If
you have any questions about anything on this list, please email Mrs. Pitner at [email protected].
In addition to the measures we will be taking on campus, we are asking that each member of our production team takes
this pandemic seriously in their time away from school. To best avoid a spread in our cast/crew, we all need to be taking
the necessary steps to keep ourselves safe. We encourage our students and production team members to wear masks in
social gatherings and practice social distancing when outside of school. We know that this year has been difficult and we
are all tired of all of the precautions, but we really do not want to have to cancel our musical again this year. If at any
point we feel that it is unsafe to continue rehearsing, we will be forced to cancel or postpone. Please help us by taking the
steps necessary to keep our cast and crew healthy. This is a team effort! Thank you for your support in this.
The current mitigation plan is as follows. Please note: It may be changed or updated as we receive more information
about COVID-19 numbers or receive additional guidance from the school/district. Changes will be communicated as
quickly as possible.
1. Students and staff will be screened daily using the C-3 COVID Monitoring Form. 2. Masks
a. During Performance i. Mask will be required at all times by all audience members. There will be signage and COVID
expectations on all advertising/publicity materials. Audience members who do not wear a mask will be asked to leave.
ii. Masks will be required for actors, crew, and staff at all times off stage and backstage. Masks will be worn by the front of house crew.
iii. If positivity rates remain high and/or the team feels it is needed, clear masks will be worn by the actors while performing (https://www.theclearmask.com/product purchased by boosters) Students are welcome to purchase their own if they would like to have them for rehearsals, auditions, or just to have extra.
b. During Rehearsal i. Masks will be required by all cast, crew, and staff during rehearsals ii. During dress rehearsals, actors may switch to clear masks if needed
3. Social Distancing a. Actors
i. Cast will be kept to 13-15 students. We will have two casts – cast A & B, who will rehearse separately to keep exposure to a minimum
ii. While actors are on stage, they will be spaced as far as possible. iii. Prior to all performances and rehearsals, actors will be asked to wash hands and/or use hand
sanitizer. We may take temperatures if the school cases are concerning. iv. During rehearsals actors will be asked to social distance when not onstage
1. A seating chart will be used for ensuring social distance. The seating chart will be provided to the office in case quarantine is needed.
2. A system will be created to ensure that there is no gatherings in the dressing room (assigned times for changes, etc). Students will be assigned areas backstage for when they are not onstage. This will be monitored by a parent during shows (this parent will also be masked).
. Staff/Crew i. There will be a very limited number of students on crew (i.e. lights, sound, props/costumes,
house/ticketing) They will be required to practice social distancing at all times (along with masking).
ii. Casteel staff members and booster club members will also be required to always wear masks and practice social distancing.
. There will be no post-show meet and greet with the cast to avoid gathering in large groups. 4. Audience/Seating
a. Audience will be at the capacity allowed by the district at the time b. Groups will be separated by at least six feet using alternating rows. c. If our numbers are deemed unsafe, we will livestream the show rather than having a physical audience
present d. If concessions are sold, those eating will be asked to consume their food/drink outside and socially
distanced. 5. Ticketing/Materials
a. All ticketing will be digital (online sales). b. Tickets will be limited to the number of seats available. c. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets will be sold online until the day of the show. There will be
no tickets available to purchase at the door. a. Programs will also be digital only. Upon arriving they will receive a link to access the show’s program. b. Any props used will only be touched by the actor who needs them. All materials will be sanitized after
each rehearsal and show. In the scene shop, tools will be sanitized between uses. c. Makeup kits will be individualized. There will no sharing of any hair/makeup tools. Actors will be
responsible for applying their makeup themselves unless special effects makeup is needed. If this is the case, the hair/makeup crew and the actor will wear masks while applying the makeup (forehead only). The dressing rooms and hair/makeup stations will be sanitized between uses. We will use a schedule for makeup application so that the number of students allowed in the dressing rooms will be limited.
Students who are at rehearsals or crew meetings who choose not to follow the procedures regarding mask
wearing, social distancing, safety, etc. will be given one warning. If they choose not to follow the rules again,
they will be removed from the show. We are taking safety very seriously as we run our rehearsals and crew
meetings. This will be non-negotiable. Thank you for your support in this!
Character Breakdown
Man in Chair: (30-60) The Man In Chair is the narrator and host for the show. He is essentially a neurotic shut-in but he
is truly happy listening to his collection of soundtracks from classic Broadway shows. This is the only principal character
that is not a stock character from 1920's musicals, and his mannerisms should be funny and charming but also realistic.
Vocal range: Baritone
Janet Van de Graaff: (30s) Star of Feldzieg’s Follies who is conflicted about giving up her life on the stage to marry
Robert Martin. Attractive, vivacious, outgoing personality. She loves being the center of attention and is the
consummate 1920s starlet. Strong movement and special skills (acrobatics, juggling, etc.) a plus. Vocal range: Alto with
big belt (G3-E5)
Robert Martin: (30-40) The groom-to-be who is deeply in love with Janet. He is the token 1920s leading man – debonair,
dashing, and a matinee idol. He is cheesy, cheerful, and optimistic. Must be able to tap dance and roller skate.Vocal
range: Tenor (C3 – Ab4)
The Drowsy Chaperone: (40s-50s) Janet’s alcoholic confidante. Care-free, often because she is drunk. An experienced
“woman of the world” who couldn’t care less what the world thinks. A melodramatic diva to be reckoned with who
gleefully chews the scenery and steals just about every scene she is in. Great comedic role. Think Liza Minnelli meets
Tallulah Bankhead. Vocal range: Alto with strong belt (F3-D5)
Aldolpho: (40s) Latin lothario. A womanizing cad who is very impressed with himself. He is confident, vigorous, and a
buffoon. Vaudeville-style acting and fake Spanish/Italian accent required. Should have great comic timing. Vocal range:
Bass/Baritone + great falsetto (A#2-G4)
Mrs. Tottendale: (45-60) A wealthy widow and host of the wedding. She is flighty, eccentric, often times forgetful, and
funny. She is absolutely charming, bubbly and oblivious to the confusion her behavior generates in other people. Vocal
range: Alto character voice (G3-Db5)
Underling: (50s-60s) Mrs. Tottendale’s unflappable butler and manservant. He is stoic, dry-humored and sarcastic. A
cross between Arthur Treacher and Niles the butler from The Nanny. Vocal range: Tenor character voice (Ab2-G4)
Mr. Feldzieg: (40s-50s) Harried producer who will do anything to stop the wedding in order to keep Janet in the Follies.
He is nervous, sarcastic, impatient, overbearing, and insensitive. Vocal range: Baritone (Db3-Db4)
Kitty: (30s) 1920s dumb blonde chorine. She is Mr. Feldzieg’s companion and will do anything to be a leading lady. A
cross between Norma Cassady from Victor Victoria and Lena Lamont from Singin’ in the Rain. Vocal range: Soprano
comedic belt (Bb3-F5)
George: (30s-40s) Robert’s anxious best man. He is loyal, sincere, and nervous. Makes looking out for Robert’s interests
his top priority so that the wedding will come off without a hitch. Must be able to tap. Vocal range: Tenor (F3-Bb4)
Gangsters 1 & 2: (30s-40s) Two jovial gangsters who are posing as pastry chefs. Typical 1920s Broadway gangsters full of
word play and stylized movements. Good comic timing and dancing skills required. Vocal range: Tenor (Db3-Gb4)
Trix the Aviatrix: (35-50) The brave and brash female aviator. She is sassy, sleek and a take charge kind of gal. Preferably
an African American actress as originally cast. May double in the ensemble. Vocal range: Alto (Ab3-Eb5)

AUDITION HELP! Choosing a Monologue
You must choose a one minute monologue to perform for the audition panel. Mrs. Pitner’s website has a section titled “Find a Monologue” that can be helpful. You can also do a Google search to find monologues by genre and age range.
Choosing a Song
You must choose a 30-second (16 bar) song to perform for the audition panel. Your song must be from a
Broadway show. It cannot be a pop song. If you are not familiar with Broadway musicals, try looking up
Disney movies that have been turned into musicals, such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, or The
Little Mermaid. You can also search for “Broadway audition songs” on the internet. Choose one that fits
your range and also that shows the character/style of the musical you are auditioning for.
Audition Tips
• Be prepared!! The more prepared you feel, the more confident you will feel • Before you begin your monologue, slate your piece. This means that you tell the audition
panel the name of your monologue/the play the monologue is from and the author if you can find it
• When you end your piece, simply say “thank you” • Remember that giving a monologue is not simply reciting lines – you must act! Do your best to
portray the character. Think about what they want and why they are saying these words. • When delivering your monologue, pick ONE focus spot above the audition panels’ heads to
deliver your lines to. Pretend that spot is the person you are speaking to. • Rehearse your entire audition, from when you enter the room to when you leave. • Songs to avoid: anything from Wicked, Les Miserables, Hamilton or anything really
