You have probably noticed that there are a lot of narrow paths between the houses, which are known locally as boëls. Set off to explore medieval Cherbourg, with its boëls and towers, and label the map below with what you can see in the photos.

The photograph shown here is of the Cherbourg Transatlantic Sea Port. Designed in the Art Deco style, by the architect René Levavasseur, it was inaugurated by the President of the Republic on 30th July 1933. It was a very busy port of call prior to the Second World War, and again in the 1950s and 1960s. A host of famous cruise liners have made stopovers here: the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elisabeth 1 and 2, the France ...

Question 15Question 17Now, head towards the statue of Napoléon. It was sculpted between 1855 and 1857 by Armand Le Véel, in homage to Napoleon Bonaparte who was responsible for continuing work on the sea wall and for the construction of a battery at its centre.
