PATRICK W. CANNING,
MILDRED VA CHESLE Y.
MIPDREDAR CHES EEY:
School Board.
Nottingham, N. H., February 6, 1939.
REPORT CF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the Citizens of Nottingham:
During the past year a special appropriation of the Dis-
trict enabled the School Board to complete the alterations
planned for the Gebig schoolhouse, including the remodeling
of the shed and the installation of a recently perfected type
of septic toilets. These have proved ‘highly satisfactory and
a distinct improvement over the chemical type, as well as
more economical to maintain. This school should now be
provided with a driven well, as water has to be carried a long distance. The septic toilets do not require running
water, but they need several pails full daily for efficient
maintenance.
At the Center School, Miss Alta Scruton declined re-
election after many years of faithful service as a teacher,
fifteen of which were spent in Nottingham. Miss Scruton had high professional ideals and continued to be progressive
in the best sense. Her retirement was marked by many ex-
pressions of esteem from her associates and the community. As her successor, Miss Helen Dowaliby, a graduate of Ply-
mouth Normal School in the three year elementary curricu-
lum was chosen. Every effort was made to find a boarding
place for this teacher near by the school, but without suc- cess. Some one would be doing the community a service to
provide comfortable living quarters available for teachers at Nottingham Center.
The report of Miss Margaret Macdonald, School Nurse,
for last year shows that teeth, tonsils, eyes, and weight are
in need of special attention in many cases. The schools
were remarkably free from serious epidemics. All pupils
were vaccinated. A dental clinic was held, under the spon-
sorship of the Parent-Teacher Association, at which 30
children were treated, 23 of them receiving certificates of complete care.
Respectfully submitted,
CHESTER W, DOE,
Superintendent of Schools.
