Mat erial Review :
Made exclusively for arc spraying. Characteristics
of the coating are very high bond strengths and itsability to produce a dense, wear resistant surface, advantageous for machine element work. The use
of 1/16 wire with this material has the added
advantage of fume reduction during spraying. Theprealloyed wire produces superior bond coats that
are dense, resistant to corrosion, mechanical andthermal shock. The material is very suitable as aone-coat system and machines very easily to a
finish of 5 micro inches. The unusual self-bondingability of the alloy is attributed to the exceptionallyhigh temperatures the alloy reaches, and which on
impact with the base material, diffuses to form ametallurgical bond. One of the major problems inachieving high quality, well-bonded coatings in any
thermal spray process is the expensive andextensive preparation of the substrate. Aluminum
bronze eliminates the problem. The coating, through extensive testing, has been found to be farsuperior to that produced by most materials, notonly in bond strength, but also in sharp edge and
impact loading. Aluminum bronze is self-bondingto a broad range of smooth metal surfacesincluding annealed or hardened carbon steels,
hardened alloy steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and copper based alloys. It is highlyrecommended as the bond coat of choice for
copper based alloys, as the nickel aluminum bondcoats do not bond well to copper substrates. Thefact that the high performance characteristics are
obtained only with the wire arc spray process is
attributed to the higher temperatures achieved--arctemperatures in the range of 7000-12,000F--
which produce superheated particles.
Arc Spray 10T aluminum bronze wire can be
sprayed with any Praxair and TAFA Arc Spray gun.
CAUTION: All Praxair and TAFA wires have beenoptimized for arc spraying. Use of alternate wires
usually cause problems such as excessive tipwear, spitting and feed problems. We onlyrecommend Praxair and TAFA certified wires.
Applicat ion Review :
Recommended for all general metallizing work withbronze. This material is an extremely effectivebond coat where surface preparation may be less
than optimum; for example, on cast iron or steel. Itis also used as a coating in its own right and hasthe highest corrosion resistance and maximum
wear resistance of the arc spray bronzes. Majoruses, in addition to bond coats, are for bearings inthe steel industry and for reclaiming alumi-
num/bronze components, including propeller shaftsfor operation in sea water. Praxair and TAFA 10T
aluminum bronze can be machined but, again, grinding will give a better surface.
Arc spray coats from 0.004" (0.01 mm) to 0.006"
(0.015 mm) can be readily applied in one pass.Thicker coatings up to 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) havebeen applied by continuous spraying. Thus, in
some cases, 10T can be used as a one-coatsystem. Coatings can be machined to a mediumfinish with high speed tools or ground to smooth
finish with aluminum oxide or silicon carbidewheels. It can be sprayed directly on a chemicallyclean surface without conventional blasting, turning
or roughening, thereby eliminating the need for
expensive preparation equipment and theassociated labor and quality control.

** Depends on atomizing air pressure.*** Higher air pressures, smaller wire (1/16), and lower amperage with red nozzle cap gives smallest
diameter pattern.

Spraying Procedures:
Using excessive voltage reduces quality of coating.Voltage should be adjusted to give minimum noiseand smooth arc operation. Excessive voltage
causes larger particles and poor spray pattern.Too low a voltage will cause popping.
Be sure not to overheat substrate even if thismeans stopping to allow cooling, use air jet cooling
if greater speed is required. Note that on someapplications where preheating is tolerable, preheating work to 300F can improve bond and
deposit efficiency.
NOTE: Standard air caps and positioners can be
used in 8830 or 9000 systems.

a When using power lead extensions other than thenormal 12 foot furnished, the voltage must beincreased by approximately 3.4 volts per
50 foot of extension; i.e., add 3.4 volts to the
recommended voltage setting for a given wire if theextension is increased to a 50 foot length.
b Can vary between 50-300 depending on size ofworkpiece and traverse speed.
c For finer finish, raise air pressure at point of finish.
Finishing:
Praxair and TAFA 10T coatings can be machined
or ground to achieve a desired finish. Excellentfinishes have been obtained on coatings of Praxairand TAFA 10T using tungsten carbide tool bits with
surface feet per minute, and a traverse of 0.0025"per revolution. Best results are obtained with cutsof 0.010".
Hazards:
Observe normal spraying practices, respiratoryprotection and proper air flow patterns advised.
For general spray practices, see AWS PublicationsAWS C2.1-73, "Recommended Safe Practices forThermal Spraying" and AWS TSS-85, "Thermal
Spraying, Practice, Theory and Application."Thermal spraying is a completely safe processwhen performed in accordance with proper safetymeasures. Become familiar with local safety
regulations before starting spray operations.DO NOT operate your spraying equipment or usethe spray material supplied before you have
