Your Impact, Your Legacy

This year, we have witnessed the incredible generosity of our community and the impact it has on transforming care, recovering from illness and healing from grief.

Through generous gifts from our region, the Foundation was able to provide more than $1,198,000 to help fund advanced and urgently needed medical equipment and hospital programs.

In June 2018 the Foundation launched the community phase of the Cancer Care, Close to Home campaign during a reception celebrating leadership donors and campaign volunteers, announcing $3.7 million raised.

This year, two appeal letters were sent to our community. The spring appeal featured Conrad Rancourt, cancer survivor.

The winter appeal letter shared the story of Tara Blake, mother of five who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016.

Together, these letters raised $85,731 with 726 donations.

A new endowment is funding the Lesley Burt-Manary Registered Nurse Leadership Award. Leslie was a respected, dedicated registered nurse at NBRHC who is fondly remembered for her professionalism, leadership, sense of humour, and for consistently upholding high standards of nursing practice during her career. The award was launched in May 2018 with its first award and education grant recipient announced in May 2019.

Reflecting on the year, we feel proud and grateful for our community’s exceptional commitment to healthcare in our region. The year ahead promises to be one of opportunity and impact.

Conrad’s Story After seeing his doctor about the blood in his urine, Conrad Rancourt was sent for a CT scan. He was stunned when the doctor broke the news that he had a golf ball sized tumour on his bladder. Dr. Ian Cowan and Dr. Bernard Goldfarb rushed him through diagnostics that required the removal of the tumour for assessment.

In July 2015, Conrad was booked for surgery at the North Bay Regional Health Centre to remove the tumour.

The tumour ended up being larger than expected and very aggressive. Conrad was told that his entire bladder and prostate must be removed.

In October, Conrad was in surgery at NBRHC to have his bladder, prostate and lymph nodes removed.

Conrad received all of his medical care at NBRHC. His cancer was diagnosed with a CT scan, and he received ultrasounds, an MRI and a bone scan before his surgery in North Bay. Conrad continues to have ultrasounds every six months to ensure his kidneys are functioning properly.

“Just driving the short distance home to Corbeil after my surgery was uncomfortable. I can’t imagine having to travel to and from Toronto or Sudbury,” said Conrad. “We never know when we will end up in the hospital. We just need the right equipment that will allow us to stay close to home for our care. Donating to the hospital Foundation is the best way to make sure that can happen.”

Transformational Naming During 2018, our community had the incredible opportunity to celebrate and recognize two transformational gifts to the Cancer Care, Close to Home campaign.

In June, our community celebrated Max and Lorraine Shapiro’s $1 million donation, naming the Critical Care Unit in their honour.

“This gift is for everyone in our community,” said Shapiro. “If better technology can help diagnose and treat people [with cancer] sooner, that’s a good thing. I am always amazed and appreciate the Health Centre and the care we have access to here.”

With the arrival of the second CT in October, the Terry McKerrow CAT Scan Operating Fund celebrated their $1 million donation and their

history by naming of the CT Suites in honour of Reg Laroche and the Lions Clubs of Region 17.

“Twenty-five years ago area Lions came together to fund the operation of our community’s first CT scanner,” said Dennis Young, Chair of the Terry McKerrow Board. “Reg Laroche was instrumental in this campaign. After his good friend and fellow Lion, Terry, passed away, he worked in earnest to secure support from every club in Region 17 resulting in the establishment of the Terry McKerrow Cat Scan Operating Fund.”

Tara’s Story Tara Blake of North Bay is an example of how cancer can creep up unexpectedly. The forty-five year old mother of five discovered a hard marble-like lump on her left breast in 2016. Despite a normal mammogram the previous year, a biopsy determined it was cancerous and growing aggressively.

She made the tough decision to have her entire breast removed rather than a lumpectomy. “It just felt like the right decision for me, even though I didn’t know what type of tumour it was until after the procedure. What was most important to me was being around so I could be a good mom to my kids,” said Tara.

Four weeks after her surgery, Tara started chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the chemo caused an allergic reaction followed by infections, and eventually it was

unsafe to continue. “The physical part was minimal compared to the mental part,” recalled Tara. “I had to do what I could to ensure I would continue to have a vibrant and vital life, and focusing on eating well, exercising and having a positive outlook made me feel strong,” said Tara.

Today, Tara is grateful to have had an exceptional and speedy recovery both physically and emotionally.

“Being treated in such a quick manner made it much easier. Having those services and equipment at our doorstep is a gift to our medical community to do their job well, and to the patient and family where the impact is already significant. The burden of receiving treatment out of town would have been much greater. Having care available close to home helps ‘normalize’ the situation for everyone. I know from my personal experience that early diagnosis and treatment definitely had an impact on my outcome and my quality of life.” Expressing Gratitude with Golden Hearts

When you end up in the hospital, regardless of the circumstance, there are often individuals involved in your care who stand out; who go above and beyond your expectations. Whether it was a doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, volunteer or environmental service staff, we’ve had the privilege of hearing so many stories of exceptional care at the Health Centre.

Through the Grateful Family Program, many patients and families are expressing their gratitude for their care through a donation.

A donation is a meaningful way for you and your family to say thank you for the care you received, helping to purchase urgently needed medical equipment so that your community has access to advanced levels of care, close to home.

When you honour someone through this special program, they receive a Golden Heart Award, are celebrated in front of their peers and they receive a special recipient badge to wear with pride alongside their hospital name tag.

Monthly Giving We all need our hospital. Becoming a monthly donor is easy and it’s a meaningful way we can enhance our healthcare, close to home. We are grateful for the 125 NBRHC Foundation monthly donors.

Your Footprint for Future Generations Bob and Frankie Syme were inspired to make annual donations because of the care they received at the Health Centre. They are extending their legacy of giving beyond their lifetime by naming the hospital in their Will, supporting advanced medical equipment for future generations.

great care and treatment over the past few years dealing with heart issues, two hip replacements and intestinal disorders.”

12th Annual Our Hospital Walk/Run Raised $109,000 for urgently needed advanced medical equipment. More than 600 people ran, walked and volunteered in support of your hospital. Save the New Date! Our Hospital Walk/Run is September 22nd.

Osprey Links Charity Golf Gala presented by OneLife Wealth Management Raised $55,000 in support of Cancer Care, Close to Home. The sun was shining for the sold out Golf Gala as everyone rallied together in support of cancer care in your community. Save the Date! Osprey Links Charity Golf Gala is August 21st.

Peter Minogue Rocks and Hearts Tournament Raised $30,000 in support of the Cancer Care, Close to Home campaign, Canadore Foundation and the Military Family Resource Centre.

Farquhar Chrysler Charity Golf Tournament Raised $34,202 in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This tournament keeps growing every year, supporting babies in our community. Funds raised helped purchase an isolette (incubator) for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Festival of Trees ~ Blue Sky Region Raised $18,600 in support of the Cancer Care, Close to Home campaign and the PADDLE Program. A selection of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths donated by local businesses were auctioned off to the community. Save the Date! Festival of Trees is November 15th to 17th.
