CHAPTER ONE1.0 BACKGROUND OF MAKERERE UINVERSITY

Makerere University was established in 1922 as a humble technicalschool, makerere university is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa. In January of that year the school which was later renamed Uganda technical college, opened

its doors to 14 day students who began studying carpentry, building and mechanics

The college soon began offering various other courses in medical care, agriculture, veterinary sciences and teacher training. It expanded over the year to become a center for higher education ineast Africa in 1935, the college started developing into an institution of higher education offering post school certification courses

In 1949, it become a university college of London, offering courses leading to the general degrees of the university of its then mother instutition,with the establishment of the university of east Africa in June 29,1963, the special relationship with theuniversity of London came to a close and degrees of the university of east Africa were instituted.

On july,1970 makerere become an independent national university of the republic of Uganda offering under graduate course loading to its own awards makerere offers not only day but also evening and external graduates (both Uganda and foreign )it Avery active for research. The uni8versity transitioned from the faculty based to collegiate system. on July and as of Friday 30december 2001, makerere officially transformed into a collegiate university with constituent colleges and one school operating assemi autonomous units of the university organization.

The university council the supreme governance governance body. the university council works through eight committees. Academic matter are channeled to council through senate sub committees of the university council.

1.2 LOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY

Makerere university is located on makerere hill which is on the many hills on which Kampala the capital city of Uganda is built the main campus is about 5KM to the North of the city center covering an area of 300 acres. The location offers an excellent academic environment free from all forms of disturbances associated with city center locations as portrayed in the university Anthem mainly Address Makerere university P.O.BOX 062, KAMPALA, UGANDA

1.3 ACTIVITES OF THE UNIVERSITY

Faculty of medicine and school of public health,makerere university kampala,Uganda.faculty of medicine and school of public health makerere university.

Makerere university water Reed Project was established in2002 for the primary purpose of HIV development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda. It is one of the five international Research sites established by the department of Defense United States HIv Research programme.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY

To coordinate develop and ensure the effective delivery of the university lifelong learning programme.

To champion continuing and life long learning education to both national and international levels and encourage academic departments within makerere university and externalorganization to promote and contribute toward the provision of continuing and life long learning/education to all.

Provide specialized support services and programmers to non-transitional mature under graduate part time and full time.

1.6 MAKERERER UINVERSITY ORGANISATION STRUCTURE

Makerere university structure which is comprises of the advisory /policy board, director center for population and applied statics, administration unit, research training collobration.trainees, and others.

CHAPTER TWO2.1 PURPOSE OF THE INTERNSHIP TRAINING

To provide the internee with the opportunity to utilize knowledge and skills acquired from class, and exercise them outside class.

To expose the internee to a broader ranger of activities in the field as far as accounts and administration is concerned.

To enhance the internee process, verify and reconcile payment voucher, noncurrent asset bank statements with the cash book respectively.

To contribute o the students professional education that areuseful to the university and that refine the internees professional skills.

To enable internee identify her professional strengths and weakness and areas of knowledge for future studies.

2.2 DEPARMENTS WORKED IN

The interne was holding a title of an Assistant bursar, where she makes salaries payrolls deduction of different employees, enters them into the computer system, prepare he deductions and then give them to the employees paying out salaries to the fellow employees and preparation of vouchers and cheques for P,A.Y.E and VAT which are paid out every month before 15 of next month.

The internee worked in various departments ranging from accounting and finance administrative and non-accounting staff. in the accounts department, the internee used to pay out salariesand office expenses, reconciling university bank statement with the cash book every month, preparation of receipts and issuing ofreceipts to the clients who pa university, finance department sheused to received calls from the employee and in the non-finance staff, the internee acted as an office messenger

2.3 RESPONSIBLITIES/ TASKS PERFORMED

Preparation and editing of a proposal for invisible employee.

Preparation of salaries for university employees.

Entering transaction transitions in a computer system using tally.

Preparation of vouchers for employees allowance.

Filling the employees letters appointment letters and others

Filling of files of the employees who ask for loans in different employees.

Tax reconciliation (VAT) PAYE ,NSSF ,of the employee.

Preparation of list of work progress of the office.

2.4HOW DIFFERENT COURSE UINTS STUDIED AT THE INSTUTITE WERE APPLIED DURING THE TRAINING.

2.4.1 Auditing.

Auditing has helped me in that when we go for the field the knowledge which I was taught in class is the same knowledge I uselike when you are carrying an audit for an employee you have to first make a plain, prepare the engagement letter, prepare audit working papers obtain audit evidence , prepare management letter and the audit report. All this information was taught to me and has really helped me during my training.

2.4.2Financial accounting.

Financial accounting (i)and financial accounting (ii) have helped me in the preparation of management accounts and accounts of different employees during ma training.

2.4.3Business finance.

Business finance has helped me in the preparation of fund flow statement and cash flow statement and balancing them for thedifferent banks during my training

2.4.4 Business organization and Management ( BOM)

Business organization and management has helped me to know the different types of business to be carried out and how to handle them not to make losses . so during my training I was ableto get access to different types of businesses in the way they are established controlled and run by different operations.

2.4.5 Cost accounting

Cost accounting knowledge has helped me in the preparationof the pay roll of makerere university and also the preparation of requisition forms, vouches and also signing them.

2.4.6 Business Communication.

Business commutation has helped me to know the business language and how to deal with different types of customers supplies and the business world as a whole.

2.4.7 Computer practical and Fundamentals.

Computer fundamentals is helped me to know the different types of computer software which comprise of a computer system and its applications, since most of the transactions done during my training were computerized so computer theory and practical helped me so much.

2.4.8 Research methodologies.

Research as a course units studied at school has helped me to know how to carry out research and get the necessary information which was essential for my training.

2.5.0 MAJOR CHALLENGES FACED DURING THE TRAINING AND HOW THEY WERE HANDLED

2.5.1 Major challenges faced during the training.

Limited transport

The internee was faced with the problem of limited transport to and from the university where she was training from.

Writing of internship report.

Writing of the report was not the problem but the challenge was the limited time which the internee used to get andthis time was not enough to compile her report.

Co-operation

The internee was faced with a challenge of how to look for different information in different file since some of the document were being filled in wrong files.

2.5.2How the challenge were handled

Due to limited finance by the intern, she used to save small money to use for transport throughout the internship exercise.

Due limited time the intern had she was sparing some little time to type her report.

The interne used to cp-operate with all the university during her internship programmme.

2.6.0 OTHER PERSONNAL BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE TRAINING

Preparation of management account of different employee. Preparation of financial accounts different employees. Preparation of payrolls. Preparation of invoices.

CHAPTER THREE3.1 RECOMMENDATIONS PROSED FOR IMPROVEMENT IN MAKERERE UNIVERSITY

Makerere university should ensure that there is a person responsible for filling all the documents in their specific files and that same person should be responsible for fillingroom and organization files.

3.2RECOMMEDATION PROPOSED FOR IMPROVEMENT FOR FUTURE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING BY YMCA.

YMCA as the institute should provide places of training to the students should its in connect with many organizations and financial institute.

YMCA as the institute should provide ample time to its students when writing the internship report for at least twomonths after the training because during training some students do not get time to type their reports.

3.3GENERAL CONCLUSION

The internship exercise is noticed as an important and virtual as she prepares herself as aproffessional.this too fulfills her intended objectives of the internship exercise hence this report.
