LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP2020 was quite the year! On March 16, families were enjoying spring break - playing mini golf at

Estes Park Center and Nordic skiing at Snow Mountain Ranch. Meanwhile, staff were reaching out, calling cabins, lodge rooms and cell phones to say YMCA of the Rockies was closing due

to the Covid-19 pandemic. Little did we know a second closure would come on October 23 as the East Troublesome Fire threatened both centers. Estes Park Center was fully evacuated, including firefighters and evacuees from another nearby fire; Snow Mountain Ranch was under a pre-evacuation notice and was also housing evacuees.

In spite of closing twice, significant budget reductions, staff layoffs and constant changes in safety regulations, YMCA of the Rockies persevered through one of the toughest years in its history. We persevered because of the incredible generosity shown by you, our supporters. You have ensured our ability to continue building a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Thank you. Another thank you goes out to our staff, who showed amazing resilience while constantly adapting to the challenges presented by 2020.

In accordance with local ordinances and social distancing protocols, staff at both Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch found creative ways to offer programs to guests, both virtually and in-person. As a way to say thank you to the healthcare professionals working so hard to care for others, we offered discounted and complimentary stays to those who needed the rest and respite most. And while schools operated remotely, we offered childcare at the Estes Park Center for local families, many of whom received full or partial scholarships. Then during the two largest wildfires in Colorado history, we provided shelter for over 800 firefighters and evacuees.

Also in 2020, we took our commitment to diversity and inclusion to the next level by forming a board and volunteer diversity and inclusion task force, and creating a full-time staff position dedicated to furthering diversity, equity and inclusion work.

We were able to do all this because of you. We humbly say, thank you for supporting YMCA of the Rockies during an extraordinary year. We are looking forward to a safe and successful 2021!

T hroughout the years, we’ve been honored to serve our communities – through respite for healthcare workers during the pandemic, shelter for those displaced by natural disasters across the country, free stays

for families dealing with critical childhood illness and so much more, but 2020 brought the opportunity to step up and serve our local communities of Estes Park and Grand County, Colorado like never before.

Colorado is no stranger to wildfires, but 2020’s fire season was unparalleled. On August 13, the Cameron Peak Fire started about 18 miles from YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, marking the start of an unforgettable and truly unimaginable series of events. The next day, the Williams Fork Fire started just 10 miles from Snow Mountain Ranch. As the fires grew, winds remained favorable and both YMCA properties remained unthreatened, providing an opportunity for Snow Mountain Ranch to serve the fire personnel arriving from across the country. As the fall season advanced and temperatures dropped, it became unsafe for firefighters to camp like they’d been doing, and they too moved into warm lodging at the Y.

As the Cameron Peak Fire grew, it began to threaten the communities surrounding Estes Park. Without hesitation, YMCA of the Rockies staff jumped into action, and warmly welcomed 68 evacuee families and their pets into cabins. As families settled into their cabins at the Estes Park Center, the East Troublesome Fire in Grand County grew over 100,000 acres in a single day, burning through communities between Granby and Grand Lake, quickly becoming the second largest wildfire in Colorado history. Residents were forced to evacuate immediately, many with just the clothes on their backs. Many year-round staff members and their families moved into cabins at Snow Mountain Ranch, and hundreds of firefighters from across the country arrived through the wee hours of the morning to support firefighting efforts. The fire burned through Rocky Mountain National Park and crossed the Continental Divide. In a seemingly impossible series of events, the East Troublesome Fire was threatening both communities where YMCA of the Rockies is located.

At the height of the two largest wildfires in Colorado history, YMCA of the Rockies hosted approximately 680 fire personnel, 199 evacuees and 39 pets between Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch. Due to the extreme behavior of the East Troublesome Fire, the Estes Park Center was forced to evacuate and Snow Mountain Ranch was put on pre-evacuation notice by local officials. All staff, fire personnel, evacuees and pets were safely evacuated from Estes Park Center property. In typical YMCA fashion, our good friends at YMCA Camp Santa Maria generously stepped up and provided shelter for many of our seasonal staff who had been evacuated.

In what can only be described as a miracle, the fire did not reach Estes Park Center and the snow that came that Sunday brought much-needed relief for the fire crews who’d been working tirelessly to protect the Y and our communities. Snow Mountain Ranch did not have to evacuate and was able to continue to host fire teams, evacuees and staff. Estes Park Center suffered quite a bit of property damage due to frozen pipes and boilers, but after a temporary closure, was able to welcome guests back to property.

YMCA of the Rockies can never fully express our gratitude for all that the fire crews have done to keep our communities safe, often in the worst conditions with little to no sleep. We will never forget their time in Estes Park and Grand County and we are honored to have been able to host them in safe, warm accommodations.

Our amazing supporters stepped up and showed us just how much they love the Y, by donating over 1,000 gifts to support us during this stressful and uncertain time.

The fires challenged our team but they made us stronger, and more ready than ever to serve guests and tackle anything else that comes our way. The YMCA family is strong, and this year has proven that time and time again.

2020 SAFETY

Fire personnel hosted by YMCA of the Rockies during the unprecedented Colorado wildfire season, along with approximately 199 evacuees, and 39 pets between Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch.

We instituted mask wearing for all staff and guests, program preregistration, symptom checking at the start of staff shifts and enhanced cleaning and sanitizing practices.

Weeks of virtual worship services provided by both the Estes Park Center Chaplain and Snow Mountain Ranch Chaplain, with over 100,000 Facebook views.

PROJECT SANCTUARY$54,000 in lodging and meeting room expenses was discounted for Project Sanctuary, an organization serving military veterans and their families. 241 individuals attended the retreats, including 36 families.

SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED ALL OF US2020 was a challenging year for the world. In spite of having to close twice, budget cuts and staff layoffs YMCA of the Rockies was able to serve guests and deliver impact in a safe way.

First responders and hospital workers were able to get much needed respite from the stresses of their work, with discounted stays.

Healthcare professionals were nominated by their community to receive a complimentary 7-night stay with their families.

$2,750 in food donations to nonprofits in Grand County. 100 meals, 200 individual milks and 300 eggs donated to Crossroads Ministry in Estes Park.

W hile schools held classes virtually and parents still went to work, YMCA of the Rockies–Estes Park Center offered childcare for local families, many of which received full or partial scholarships to cover the cost.

From mid-March to May, emergency childcare was offered to parents working in healthcare, as first responders and in essential jobs, such as grocery stores, who had no other options. As schools went virtual and other childcare centers closed, we offered a safe space for children. During spring 2020, we were the only program open for childcare of any kind in the Estes Valley, operating Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm. We served 24 children whose families all received scholarships to cover the cost.

Fall of 2020 presented a community need again. Estes Park School District began the school year fully virtual and parents were scrambling to find childcare. YMCA of the Rockies stepped in, offering a Fall Day Camp program, where students could have a supervised space to virtually learn. Almost 90% of those participating in this program received full or partial scholarships.

It has an anchoring effect on so many, and in conversations with loyal members and friends across the nation over the past year, that sentiment has been a common theme. YMCA of the Rockies is a place for gathering but it is also a place

for respite.

Beginning in summer 2020, YMCA of the Rockies offered two programs to those serving our communities during the pandemic.

REST AND RENEW discounted stays for healthcare professionals and emergency first responders who are on the front lines of this global pandemic

HEALTHCARE HEROES complimentary seven-night stays to healthcare professionals and first responders nominated by their community

We were honored to serve 201 healthcare workers through these programs. Healthcare professionals and emergency first responders are putting their own health at risk to care for others. Welcoming these folks to the Rocky Mountains for a restful and rejuvenating stay is a small way of saying thank you to those making sacrifices for the health of their communities.

Studies show that people need downtime to restore their bodies from high-stress situations. Healthcare professionals and first responders have experienced first-hand, situations that many of us cannot imagine. They have given so much to their communities and we’re so thankful for all they’ve done and continue to do to keep us safe.

FAMILY ADVENTURE PACKS AT SNOW MOUNTAIN RANCHIn the fall of 2020, Snow Mountain Ranch began offering a new experience for families who wanted to explore the outdoors, socially distanced and at their own pace, with Family Adventure Packs.

These Adventure Packs contained self-guided activities for families to complete around the Snow Mountain Ranch property, giving them the chance to explore the natural environment safely and learn through immersive experiences.

In 2020, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote at the national level. Not all women were included in the 19th Amendment

– African American women and Native American women were both excluded from the polls through various means. African American women faced discrimination and other exclusionary tactics that made casting their vote a dangerous prospect, and Native Americans as a people were not considered U.S. citizens until 1924.

In Colorado, women gained the vote in 1893, and several other western states also permitted women to participate in the public and political life of their local communities and at the state level, but it was not until 1920 that the 19th Amendment was finally passed and ratified by all U.S. states. Women at last had a say in how their lives were governed.

Over the past year, we have uncovered a treasure trove of incredible women doing the work of the Y. At YMCA of the Rockies, women have worked to make a difference in the lives of our guests and employees and in the local communities, though their stories have often gone unnoticed. It would be a tremendous undertaking to include ALL the women here, so here are just a few.

The Women’s Auxiliary formed in the early 1920s as the presence of women was not permitted at the training school conferences. They raised money to construct the Women’s Building where women could gather, listen to presenters, and be part of the intellectual discussions of the day. But perhaps more importantly, their actions have impacted hundreds of children throughout the following century. Kindernook, which was set up to provide childcare for conference attendees, evolved into day camp. Today, day camp and after school programming serves the local communities as well as guests to our centers.

Other women include the Pifer sisters, who, not content to be followers, began leading hikes through Rocky Mountain National Park and to Longs Peak in the 1920s. The Hiking Program, finally established as its own entity in the 1960s, continues the practice of combining natural history and good conversation during the hikes.

Ruby McIntosh, an accomplished regional artist, was the first woman to participate in the artists-in-residence program. Ms. McIntosh was also a dedicated art educator and believed everyone could be an artist – they just had to find the right medium. Her use of different materials during her classes became the foundation for the arts and crafts program.

Women work behind the scenes, running departments, programs, and providing guest services. They raise and donate money for buildings and programs, like Dr. Georgia Leggett and Lula W. Dorsey. And, of course, Della Just. If it wasn’t for her determination and savvy business sense as a young widowed rancher, Snow Mountain Ranch might not exist.

If we move forward to the modern era, women continued to break glass ceilings with a few more “firsts.” Pattie Hyde Barclay was the first female to sit on the board, taking over the seat held by her father, A.A. Hyde in the 1930s, Marlys Polson became the first female board chair, and Julie Watkins the first female CEO.

From their determination to be part of intellectual life in the 1920s to their presence in the board room, women have pushed boundaries and challenged preconceived notions of the role of women in society. When we really look into our history, we discover how important women have been to the success of our Association.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: ALT ECO


YMCA of the Rockies’ Outdoor Education program typically serves nearly 8,000 students per year. Students from across Colorado and other states visit YMCA of the Rockies with their classmates, stay overnight,

are provided food and participate in hands-on environmental education. This year brought a unique opportunity to still serve students in this way.

The YMCA team was also able to provide virtual outdoor education experiences through spring 2020, including an observation activity; out(in)door education web of life activity; constructing a survival bracelet; and a discovery hike. Each post reached 2,000-4,000 people.

As we transitioned to fall, we wanted to make sure we could support the many families whose children started the year learning at home.

With students learning virtually, a teacher and mom from Fort Collins, CO, whose daughter was supposed to attend Outdoor Education with her 5th grade class, organized a small group of students and parents to participate in their outdoor education program at Estes Park Center. They called it Alt Eco. The group self-led their outdoor education program with kits provided by the YMCA program team. The group did hikes, utilized the activities in the kits, learned about water ecology and montane forests, and had a great time.

They even made their own schedule of events!

Updates to the 9-Mile hiking trail at Snow Mountain Ranch were made with support from the Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails (OLRT) Grant, and the Bowles and Johnson

families. The 9-Mile Trail is a popular trail for hikers of all ages and ability levels. After years of use and erosion, the trail needed some work. In accordance with trail standards, the 9-Mile Trail has been rerouted, widened, and resurfaced to make it safer and more sustainable. Since the completion of the work, Snow Mountain Ranch has seen an increase in the number of hikers on the trail and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The Bike Skills Park, donated by Carol Wetzig, in honor of her late husband Carl Wetzig was dedicated in 2020 as well, and offers a space for mountain bikers to improve their skills.

2020CAPITAL PROJECTS

The Bike Skills Park dedicated to my late husband Carl Wetzig, who enjoyed Mountain bike riding at Snow Mountain Ranch, is a wonderful way for people of all ages to enjoy and learn to safely navigate mountain bike trails and common obstacles. The lovely surroundings bring joy and a peaceful serenity to all. Our family was honored to be a part of this lasting legacy.”

Tilghman Park improvements were also completed at Snow Mountain Ranch, adding a walking path around the perimeter, expanded green space to accommodate groups, and new playground equipment, supported by 13 generous donors.

Renovations to Dannen Chapel, in honor of Dwight and Mary Ellen Dannen, were completed in 2020, supported by Curt and Debbie Lanham. A one-of-a-kind cross was created by former staff, Sarah Gabelhouse, to hang over the altar space.

At Estes Park Center, fundraising continues for Inspiring and Deepening Faith: A Capital Project for Hyde, Dannen and Sarah Smith Chapels.
