Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, my dears, happy birthday to you…!

tenner this year and we intend to make it a year to remember by all measures of standard. I’d love to wax eloquent to you about something intensely meaningful and life-changing that has just occurred to me – a Wordsworthesque epiphany sent down to me from the One above. But I have to be honest – and with you, I’ve been nothing but honest from day one – there’s nothing intense about the way I feel right now! I’m elated…euphoric even, and as excited as a child waiting to board the Thunderbird roller coaster. And at this point, if you ask me, I don’t want to make sense!

That’s alright, isn’t it? It’s okay to want to dance around like a merry elf that has just been paid her wages, along with a hefty holiday bonus. It’s okay to be the editor of one of the most widely-read home and decor magazines in the country, and still feel like that elf with the restless feet! Isn’t it?

Okay, so as part of my 10th birthday gift to you, I’m delighted to let you know that we have planned one of the longest birthday parties for you ever. The celebration that starts right here, with my note to you, and goes on all year through. Whether it’s holding your hand in real time or air-kissing you on a social media platform, or better still at a soiree in your city, I promise you a calendar full of things to look forward to. For the here and now, I’ve got two very special icons to

is a very special year for all of us, and the other…well, I take immense pride in bringing to you The GoodHomes Show, presented by Hafele, powered by Vector Projects. You’ll be seeing a lot of them both.

Yes, the drums are going to roll, and yes, the lights will be strung (LED only, please!) and the centrepieces adjusted and the baubles hung…the guestlist is also ready and we are just as excited as you.

Happy New Year, all!

BLACK AND GOLDWishing my favorite magazine a fantastic New Year - 2018. And Happy 10th year of being on the newstand. I can’t wait to see what the 2018 will unveil. With a keen eye to detail and trends, I can’t wait to bring home the little accents that I have picked up from your December issue. The cover story - shot by Binisha is my favorite. Because I truly believe that there is no greater combination than black with the dazzling allure of gold. Thank you for celebrating my favorite contrasting tones.

— Ankita Sheth, ChandigarhThank you, Ankita, for your email. Wishing you a great 2018. We are glad that we could inspire you. We hope that our features inspire you. And hope to feature your home in the near future.

LOOKS TO STEALHappy New Year - 2018 to the magazine that constantly inspires me to reinvent my space. Shimmer and shine have always piqued my interest. As a magazine, the editorial has always been inspiring and aspiring. Marry that with an element of glam, and you have a look that you can’t wait to come home to. I look forward to your December issue - as it gives me an idea on what to expect in the New Year - 2018. GoodHomes inspires me to translate styles into my home

— Shilpa Dev, ChennaiThank you, Shilpa, for such a heartwarming email. Wishing you a fantastic New Year to you too. We certainly hope that our inputs have helped you in successfully creating a space

lined up and hope to hear from you on the same.

ON THE GRAND SIDE I have been into home decor for quite some time now. I love reading the articles in your magazine that feature

at spaces through their point of view. It makes me ecstatic to come across one or two artists whose style I can relate to. I enjoyed going through designer Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla’s studio. After all who doesn’t like comfort and style merged into one? The dark shades bring out a certain

Much of Indian contemporary art has been influenced by

traditional cultural art. In this socio-economic climate, “Make in India” is truly the order of the day. Baaya pioneers in creating ethical, artisanal and hand-crafted products while contemporising them for modern day interiors. The Baaya Design Store curates the best of over 70 varieties of cultural art under one roof. Here are some tips to brighten up your space 2018.

RE-THINK INDIANA common interpretation of all things Indian is that it is restricted to an Indian setting with a very particular applications. However, Baaya excels in infusing Indian art into contemporary settings lending a chic eclectic vibe to a space.

DECOR TRENDS 2018Indie design is truly ‘in’ at this time. Yoga, wellness, Indian spiritual practices, natural remedies have made a big come back. Across the world and within India itself, there is an awakening to ‘Indian’ sensibilities

Indian art framed for posterity on your walls adds a royal feel to any space, be it in the bedroom or living room. Madhubani from Bihar, Gond from Madhya Pradesh, Orissa Pattachitra from Odisha or Warli from Maharashtra – take your pick. The artwork can also be commissioned directly on the wall. In this case, the rest of the decor should be dialled down to maintain the spotlight on the wall mural.

TILES – THE MORE PATTERNED THE BETTERAt Baaya we have a completely unique thought process. We use Jaipur blue pottery tiles on furniture in abstract assortments. One must first select a design that suits the surface that you want to do the tile work on. If you are going for a complex design, keep the colours simple. If the

design is modern and quirky, then colours can be interesting and experimental. An Ombre colour scheme is very on trend right now an interesting mix of shapes works when colours are complimentary. For example, a family of blues and reds works well together in different sized squares. One could also do basic checks in shades of green for an updated English look.

TERRACOTTA ACCENTSAt Baaya, we create wall murals using terracotta. The beauty of terracotta is that it works well indoors and outdoors. This beautiful wall mural makes an interesting conversation piece in the living room. Smaller terracotta figurines are a unique way to introduce doses of it into your decor.

VINTAGE CHIC VIBEBrass work is characteristic of a decade gone by. It instantly transforms the environment from the vivid present to a classic sepia. Speaking of treasure, nothing says vintage better than an aged treasure chest. It exudes an old-world charm like no other and guarantees to spark off endless conversation over some freshly brewed coffee.

Since we often have friends coming over for after-parties and social gatherings, we were wondering if you could help us design a small bar section and a terrace garden space as well.

Rajesh Premani, via email

Exotic trees around Japanese style gardens with miniature water bodies, tiny fountains with lanterns to light up, spell exotic design.

In cities with diminishing green spaces, to me gardens and tropical trees — bougainvillea in bright colours and frangipani — evoke a tranquil therapeutic welcome on a terrace garden designed for those after-parties.

FURNITURE & FEEL FOR THE PARADISE GARDEN

I would recommend a stone bar that could weather rain and sunshine without erosion. In the inner cavity of the bar, facing the bartender or host, you could design shelves, a tiny bar sink on one side of the counter, and a recess with electrical sockets for a mini fridge. Allow your wine cooler to be placed inside the house, and only give the provision of a miniature wine rack on one side of the bar counter.

Go with water-resistant water hyacinth furniture for the terrace or treated cast iron furniture if you are located near the sea like Mumbai or have to contend with the rains. Wicker, while more charming will not last a monsoon.

Miniature water bodies and tiny fountains with lanterns to light up the space will look great in a Japanese style garden.

You could run an attractivehybrid vine or bougainvillea on thetrellis. Bougainvillea is so sculpturaland evergreen a vine that I almostalways use it in interiors to addambience. It makes itself at homein almost any situation. Groomed asa roof cover, pruned and in a variety ofshapes its trunk tends to be gnarled. The trend is certainly moving towards natural fabrics. Luxury is in leisure and what you feel. When you talk about home, the fabric should be soft and handmade. In India, we have a lot of tribal craft and according to me, when it’s used in contemporary context this too is luxury simply because of the kind of effort and work with each piece is made. Even if lighting is handmade and has a story to tell, it will create more demand. In terms of colour, neutrals are always there to stay but bright fuchsia, orange, hot pink and burnt orange, will surely rule the palette.

that define them, transitional themes

strike the perfect balance between

the two.— Shantanu Garg, Creative Head,

Shantanu Garg Design

A rendition of transitional themes is carving a niche path in the design evolution with a burgeoning demand to dole out projects that seamlessly blend modern elements with the traditional aesthetics. The colour palette is characteristically neutral and subtle with colour in accents. Transitional styles are more adaptive to its surroundings. In essence, this particular look can be attained by combining finishes and details of both these distinct styles of design and architecture. While traditional and modern schemes may have their individual characteristics that define them, transitional themes strike the perfect balance between the two. Thus creating attributes of an uncomplicated design.

With fluidity in spaces as today’s mantra, the young designer believes in creating spaces that are unique yet functional. Annkur recommends bringing in fluidity through architectural elements. “When it comes to textures, bring in high gloss lacquer enamel, which can add a lot of shine to the space. Its reflective nature will also add fluidity to the space. Complement it with darker or matte surfaces. Use a viscose blend carpet to create an additional dimension to the space.”

The most intangible element of fluidity is keeping yourself as open as the spaces which flow, overflow and grow.

— Husna Rahman, Principal Designer, Fulcrum Design Studio

Husna RahmanPrincipal Designer, Fulcrum Design Studio

Fluidity is the reflection of a social shift towards living in a manner that is less enclosed. Closed spaces now embrace rather than greet with an imperial curtsey. The designer creates spaces where the walls are pulled down. Privacy is created by subtle means — sliding pocket doors, elegant pivoting doors and remote control devices that offer miraculous privacy at the touch of a button. We love the idea of creating privacy that does not isolate.

The key to creating fluidity in any space is to form a visual or spatial linkbetween them. This can be achieved in the form of a seamless floor to make

the space look expansive and connected.— Kunaal Kyhaan Seolekar, Founder & Creative Director, Studio Haus

Open-plan living spaces andmodular spaces are in trend aswe adopt modern architectureand fluid living. With the use ofstatement furniture and design, living spaces multifunction asgalleries, celebrating designelements and pieces of art.

Modular furniture systemsallow for transition. Oversized, transparent glazing is in trend, bridging the gap betweenthe exterior and interiorenvironments.

Organic design is what comes to mind when Piyush and Priyanka talk about fluidity. Parametric architecture is the forefront of innovation in the field of fluid designs. It involves designing of everyday experiences, like ceilings, walls, furniture pieces,

etc, using complex mathematical equations. “‘Random’ is not really ‘random’ when it comes to designing a parametric space. It is like bringing order into chaos. What is important to create fluidity in interiors is that spaces flow into each other. The

transition from one room to the other should be smooth. Using similar materials becomes essential, especially in small spaces. It’s important that there shouldn’t be too many materials used, which will cause chaos,” they suggest.

“I think colour is somethingthat is on every designer’sradar. Colour has the ability totransform a space like nothingelse can. You can use it toenhance movement or createseparate spaces with incredibleease. Homes are now morethan spaces to simply relax;they have become places toentertain, to eat, drink andwork. The use of consistentcolours and textures to tie upvarious areas within a spacehelps give you fluidity. Forexample, there’s no needto have an accent colour orwallpaper applied to only onewall. It’s better to wrap thesame colour across at leastthree walls to give it a more

unified look. Fluidity is almostabstract, it’s more a feeling thana product. To create this sense ofspace and freedom, decor needsto be used intelligently. Colourplays a huge role when it comesto encouraging movement, neutral shades always connectspaces while more vibrant huestend to break them apart. Whentrying to create a fluid space, look at pastel shades and neutralcolours for a sense of harmony. One colour as the base of yourwalls, running up on windowand door frames as sort of anemphasis skirting, will tie theentire space together. Avoid starkcontrasts as these will separatezones rather than maintain one, large, fluid area.”

“The idea of stripping down walls to create large spaces that are visually connected to each other is one of the key design elements I follow. By making the walls out of alternative materials one ensures less weight on floor

slabs, less occupied floor space and definitely more flexible ones. Functions that are interdependent on each other can very easily be combined together to form larger spaces. One can also experiment with various

materials when it comes to creating movable walls. For example, bamboo and glass partitions, polycarbonate sheets and metal partitions, glass and mild steel...the options and possibilities are endless.”

“In today’s world where space is at a premium, there needs to be interchangeable spatially and functionally. I believe in exploring with materials that allow for multiple forms and uses, where floor surfaces can become walls, and the walls themselves become furniture. For someone who loves to entertain with cocktails and dancing, a larger space can be created with moveable walls, and modular furniture that combines to make a large bar. For those who love to celebrate by cooking together, open up the kitchen with collapsible partitions to create various prep areas. For a movie night — drop down screens, combined with flexible, moveable furniture can transform a small space into a viewing lounge.”

Furniture is also an important element to add fluidity in a space. Compact pieces that allow for multiple uses lend fluidity in

terms of both form and function.

POTATO LEAF SOUPINGREDIENTS• Leeks 3 large• Butter 2tbsp• Vegetable stock 4 cups• Himachali potatoes 300gms• Himalayan salt, to taste• Dried marjoram, a pinch• Fresh thyme, 1-2 sprigs or Dried thyme 1/2tsp• Bay leaf 1• Sweet potato leaves 1/4 cup• Black pepper to taste• Garlic 3 cloves• Pumpkin seed oil

METHOD

1Clean and cut the leeks: Cut the leeks lengthwise and fan them

open under running water to dislodge any dirt or mud inside. No need to discard the trimmings - they can all be used to make stock. Finely chop the cleaned leeks and keep ready.

2Cook leeks in butter to soften: Melt butter on medium heat

in a thick-bottomed pot. Add the chopped leeks and stir to coat with the butter. Cover the pot and lower the heat; cook till they soften, then add the herbs and bay leaf. The leeks should not brown.

3Add broth, potatoes, herbs, salt, bring to simmer and

cook: Add the stock, diced potatoes and a teaspoon of salt to the pot. Increase the heat to high to bring to a simmer, then lower the heat to maintain a low simmer, and cook for 20 minutes, until the potatoes are cooked through. Add the sweet potato leaves and cook for two more minutes.

4Purée the soup: Remove and discard the bay leaf and thyme

sprig. Use a standing blender to blend the entire soup to a purée

KALE SALADINGREDIENTS • Cherry tomato 1/4 cup• Pea shoots 50gms• Fresh kale 400gms• Kachampoli vineger 50ml• Olive oil 50ml• Seasoned rice vinegar 1tbsp• Honey 1tbsp• Salt 1tspn• Pepper 1/2tsp• Cacciota cheese 1/4 cup grated• Radish microgreens• Beetroot microgreens

METHOD

1Use a sharp knife to cut out the tough midrib of each kale leaf,

and discard or compost. Slice the leaves crosswise into thin, 1/4inch wide slices. The easiest way to do this is to work with a small bunch of leaves at a time, stack the leaves and roll them into a loose cigar shape. Then using a sharp knife, work from one end of the ‘cigar’ to

the end. Place the kale slices into a large bowl.

2Cut the cherry tomatoes into quarters.

3In a smaller bowl, whisk together the Kachampoli

vinegar, olive oil, rice vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper. Five minutes before serving, toss the kale together with the cherry tomatoes, all the microgreens, and the dressing, allowing the kale to marinate a bit. Right before serving, stir in the grated Cacciotta.

G lamorous is the only word that comes to mind when we see interior designer Ekaterina Lashmanova’s impressive work. Her attention to the smallest details can be seen and appreciated in this bold contemporary home. Designed for a young family in Moscow, Ekaterina had a free pass to turn the space around into something special.

Talking about the owner, Ekaterina says, “The owner of this apartment is ideal! I remember coming for a meeting to discuss the future concept of the interior plan and aesthetics, we spoke about design, trends, and in one moment she asked me what I

like. I opened my laptop and started showing my moodboards and what inspires me. She immediately said ‘That’s exactly what I want. Let’s do it!’” From there on there was no looking back for Ekaterina. Although she is known for using only custom-made furniture in her designs, this space is an exception. The furniture has been imported from America and Portugal from brands like Boca do Lobo.

With a leeway to open the doors of the place and spend some time bringing to life the most tasteful trends. Ekaterina designed more than a house – she created an inspiring and iconic place to live in for the family.

the owners of Cane Boutique, Ritu and Khushi Todi’s home in Bengaluru is all about grandeur. A villa in a gated community, the exteriors follow an elegant Greek architectural style with columns and arches, while the interiors are all about open-plan living. “We broke a few walls to extend the space and

living room was planned to create a water element within the house for calm,” shares Ritu. Continuing the grandeur, the common spaces are designed with a touch of — textured walls, large Swarovski chandeliers, double-height linen drapes, mother-of-pearl doors, rich fabrics and fur carpets.

Luxury, comfort and practicality form the basis of the design philosophy both Ritu and Khushi give a big thumbs up to when it comes to designing a home. This comes through as soon as you walk into the living room, which is divided into three conversation areas, and features large artworks and furniture from Cane Boutique. The home reflects an interesting play of textures and materials, which makes this space come alive. These

elements are not obvious but they slowly unravel as you move around exploring

the space.— Richa Bahl, Interior Designer

92 GOODHOMES JANUARY 2018

Celebrating minimalism, Richa says, “The space is a balance of wooden and concrete flooring. No busy patterns come into play. The thumb

rule of creating a minimalistic place is striking a balance between bringing in and taking out

elements. Rhea’s house is minimalistic, yet has an interesting play of many things.“

his sprawlingMumbai homedraws inspirationfrom travel lores ofEurope. Owner ofone of the leadinglogistics supply

chain companies, Rhea Vazirani brought ininterior designer Richa Bahl to create a canvaswhere textures, materials and elements cometogether in perfect sync. There is nothingdistracting — every element plays the hero

windows. Flanked by the sea on one side and lush greenery on the other, Richa says, “I’ve created a space that goes beyond the trends that are in play, with blurred lines between the inside and the outside.”

As we slowly drink in the seamlessly

space, the book shelf and the sliding glass — we are met with a canvas that rests on the tenets of classicism. Not shying away from experimenting, she says, “I am still Old School when it comes to design. The simplicity of design in an old school canvas is timeless.” The challenge was when the acclaimed designer was called in midway into the project, when the space planning was already underway. With an everyday penalty looming like a dark cloud, the designer and her team worked around the clock to create a home for the owners that resonated a design vibe that could well be found in an European home. Building on Rhea’s design aesthetics, Richa says, “The home comes alive with the beauty of clean lines, the warmth of accessories, smart space

green colours that come together to create an unparalleled story.”
