Dear Readers,

The Khada Parsi is a man reborn. Maybe a little confused because of all the changes around him… not knowing how similar his stone facade is to the facade of the city he is rooted to. Think about it… his rescued structure is created with stone from Bangalore

and the efforts of a multi-cultural team… much like this city itself. He has stood in muted silence, like most of the people who live around him; observing roads

He has not objected to getting covered with the dust of everyday life and has withstood the heat and longed for the rain…. just like us all. Few metres under the feet of this majestic Khada Parsi’s 40-foot high pedestal, the earth has been mutilated to lay fresh wires and gas pipes. And so much like the the city he lives in, Khada Parsi has found a way to rewire and reshine without moving an inch!

fountains surrounding Shet Cursetjee Manockjee each day… in an effort to make us notice once again and admire an upstanding man. Unfortunately, the statue of him has outlived the city’s

And yet… somewhere in this story of the Khaada Parsi, from glory to devastation and pillaging to regained glory, lies the story of the city of resilience that swooshes by him everyday.

Some time in March, Pheroze Patel tendered his resignation from the BPP. Mehta, who would have been badly handicapped if Patel left, and hence DID NOT INFORM THE OTHER TRUSTEES of the resignation.

The Trustees came to know about the resignation only when Patel’s wife Zenobia wrote to all the Trustees, on 2nd April, where she said “A letter of resignation is already given to the Chairman, Mr Dinshaw Mehta i.e. in March 2014 but the letter is still not responded to at your end.” She requested the Trustees to “Kindly accept his resignation with immediate effect and appoint someone else so that he can step down.”

In a second undated letter, Patel’s wife wrote “It is with deep regret that I wish to state that I have already sent a letter of resignation of my husband Mr. Pheroze D. Patel working as CEO at your end.

My husband has already sent a letter of resignation to the Chairman Mr. Dinshaw Mehta, in the month of March 2014 much in advance.

During the meeting on Tuesday last he was confronted on this topic and as before, was asked to wait for some time and not resign immediately. Let me remind your good selves that this matter is not taken immediately even though my husband because of his ill health had written in his letter with immediate effect.

Three months have lapsed in this matter.”

Let us all stand as one and thank Pak Dadaar Ahura Mazda and

the brave courageous lady who thought nothing of donating her brain-dead son’s heart and saved a young Zoroastrian’s life from certain death. Dubbed ‘Mother Courage’ by the TOI, this lady showed “extraordinary grit and clarity in the hours that followed,” said her Grief Counsellor, K. Prakash. The woman, whose name can’t be disclosed under the organ donation law, works as a village health nurse and was AWARE of organ donation. “I have heard a lot about the subject and I always thought that if something happened to me, I would want my organs to be donated. But I never thought I would be in a place where I would have to take a call on my one and only son. But this is what he would have wanted,” she said. When the Grief Counsellor brought up the topic about donating her son’s organs, she discussed with her family and readily agreed. “She took me for a walk,” said Prakash. “Over a cup of tea, she spoke about how she was proud of her son and the lives he would save.” On the evening of the 16th

of June, the young Mumbai girl received a fresh lease on

a heart transplant, as the accident victim’s blood group and body weight matched only with hers.

The young recipient had been diagnosed with cardiompathy (swelling of the heart) three years ago. Earlier in 2014, doctors told her parents she had just about three months to live and a heart transplant was her best shot at survival.

The family headed to Chennai in April, and on Monday, the Commerce

… And sold! Meherangir, the sprawling sea-facing bungalow of the Father of Indian Atomic Energy, Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, on the leafy slopes of Malabar Hill has, after much contention and bidding, been successfully sold by auctioneer National Centre of Performing Arts (NCPA) to the family of Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman of Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co. Ltd., for the phenomenal price of Rs. 372 crore – one of the highest amounts shelled out for a standalone property. The Godrej family (of whom Pheroza Godrej, wife of Jamshyd Godrej, bid on behalf of the family) outbid Ajay Piramal, the second highest bidder with a bid of Rs. 371 crore. The auction was concluded and brought to a close as per the provisions of the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Upon receiving approval from the Charity Commissioner to transfer the property – a process that could take up to 45

days – the property will be handed over to the Godrej family.

The auctioning process for Dr. Bhabha’s 50-year old 17-room, 17,550 sq. ft. bungalow had

nuclear fraternity, particularly the employees of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), who were of the view that the bungalow deserved to be preserved as a heritage site, either as a Nuclear Exhibition Centre or as a Museum. However, NCPA Chairman Khushroo N. Santook viewed this through another lens. According to him, Dr. Homi Bhabha did not own the entire property; he owned 1/3rd of it till his sudden demise in 1966, post which it became

the sole property of his brother, Dr. Jamshed Bhabha, who, prior to his death in 2007, had willed the property – paintings, artifacts, jewellery, furniture et al included – to the NCPA, a cultural institution set up by him.

Sources say the bungalow will be used by the Godrej family for personal purposes. Either way, it’s a major win for them, and we can only hope that they – in whatever capacity as is possible – will carry his wonderful legacy forward in some way or the other.

The Godrej family gets the keys to Meherangir

“All hail the rains!” say the men folk of Navsari as they celebrate the annual Ghee Khichdi Festival on Bahmanya Nu Parab on the 15th of June this year!

The Ghee Khichdi Festival is century-old traditional festival to welcome the rains, and is celebrated throughout Navsari.

Over the years, generation after generation in almost every house of Navsari have lovely stories to relay about this unique festival. It is conducted every year by the Zarthosti men of Navsari on Bahman Roj of Bahman Mahino, which is a vegetarian day; this year the day fell on Sunday, 15th June 2014.

The festival started at 6 am, when a group of men went around every Parsi house with the aim of collecting gifts. People of every house give rice, dal, or cash – whatever is available in the house is given. After the huge round of

the second round consisted of preparation and cooking – traditionally, the preparation consists of khichdi sauce with boiled eggs.

Only Zarthosti men folk cook the food and eat it for lunch. Free lunch is provided to all men. As this is the beginning of the monsoon season, the men and boys sing songs for a bountiful monsoon season. This festival serves as a good bonding agent amongst men of the Community, and new friendships are forged each year. It also teaches young Zarthosti men to take pride

of such Community celebrations alive.

Wisdom and Reason are always a very formidable

combination of a good head and a good heart. There have been a couple of articles in another publication on the subject where one Mr. Daboo, whilst reading a book on Zoroastrianism, stated that the two words that describe the foundation of philosophical thought are Wisdom and Reason. He argued that just

Dokhmas, the soul is invoked by Sarosh, whereas even a most pious person if consigned to cremation gets no help from the pious Sarosh Yazad.

Mr. Dhabhar on the other hand is rigid in his opinion that the injunctions in the Vendidad clearly state that the Zoroastrians have no choice except Dokhmenashini. If the body of a Zoroastrian is disposed by cremation or any other method except Dokhmenashini, the Sarosh prayers have no effect, and the soul of the dead gets captivated by spirits of the lower order.

Perhaps that may be the reason why the Trustees of the BPP and the High Priests have decided that when Sarosh Yazad is not granting them the permit, why waste money and energy on prayers? This may be their logical reason behind denial of prayers and ban on the priests! Yet one fails to understand the logic behind why the prayers are

onwards by the same priests who were denied to pray earlier?

Imagine Sarosh Yazad coming all the way from heaven to receive the souls,

the Dokhmas, returns empty handed. Poor souls – though their bodies are saved from the hazards of rotting and putrefying, their souls are lurking in the dark.

Our body is a great gift of God. It is a temple in which our divine soul is established as a shrine. Our ultimate aim in life is to attain divinity and gain knowledge. The religious scriptures help us make progress, but there is no teacher better than the voice of the conscience within our hearts, which never fails to give the right guidance. Scriptures have reached us through scholars who interpret them to their way of thinking, and may not be in line with the original. There is a perceived

faith and tradition on one hand, and reason with wisdom, on the other.

The mind helps us to think and understand in a logical way. When body, mind, and soul work in harmony with each other, wisdom and virtues are created. Creating of values is in fact creating humanity.

On death, the body and the soul part their ways permanently. What happens to the soul is left to our imagination, but the material lifeless body cannot be survived and needs to be disposed at the earliest. At the same time, prayers and rituals are considered necessary for the salvation of the soul. Both are very sensitive issues and it is hard to compromise one for

the other. We need to arrange for the body to be disposed at the earliest before decay sets in, and we need to dispose the body in a way that causes no harm to the neighborhood. If there is a way by which the above two conditions are

transparency, people can be convinced to avoid the method of cremation. If there is none,

it should be left to the people to have their way. There is no reason why we should not

the body and religious prayers for the salvation of the soul simultaneously.

Under the present circumstances, the bodies lying in the Dokhmas are in a most pathetic and pitiable condition, insulting the dignity of the dead and causing hazards to the environment. In absence of the vultures for the last couple of decades, we are still insisting

the Dokhmas, which have become redundant in absence

of the vultures who were the sole architects of the system. The leaders of the Community should provide an alternative for decent and speedy disposal of the dead bodies. Resorting to pressure and threats of punishment has increased hostility and confrontation. Under such circumstances, let the Community members have freedom to decide for themselves whether they still want Dokhmenashini (a system surviving on a ventilator) or another method like cremation. Imposition of strictures in the name of religion was a hasty decision

reasons to justify it. Witnessing the grave consequences of such decisions, they could have been avoided if we had used some wisdom and common sense. These strictures do not

stand the test either on ethical, moral, legal, or religious grounds. They have caused a lot of damage to our reputation, created a lot of ill

will in the Community besides causing a colossal loss to our exchequer. Not a heart melted, not a head moved, strange that the decision was unanimous. Wisdom and reason have no place in religion of fanaticism.

When a person dies and his body is cremated in a far off country like the USA, prayers are performed in Mumbai, whereas, prayers are denied to all those who are cremated in Mumbai. How can this double standard be explained?

It is believed that we reap the harvest of what we sow. If we plant the seeds of hatred, we cannot reap the fruits of blessings. The prayers we get

performed through the priests are on behalf of the dead, asking God for forgiveness for any sins committed by him/her. Whether God listens to the mediation of the priests or not is another matter, but it gives comfort to the relatives, believing that they have

their beloved. Ultimately, we shall be judged by the wisdom of God alone, not knowing whether the death prayers performed by the priests will make any difference to His judgement. But certainly God will not tolerate injustice to the innocent, denying a person to perform prayers for someone, and intentionally hurting the sentiments of the people who are already in a state of grief. It is a sin to punish the innocent, and a greater sin to do so in the name of religion. Highest human happiness and well-being is a life lived consistently, excellently, and in accordance with reason.

Judicious application of knowledge is wisdom, but we should not mistake knowledge for wisdom. Knowledge is necessary to make a living while wisdom helps you make a life. Knowledge is proud that he knows so much, wisdom is humble that he knows no more. Knowledge speaks, wisdom listens.

I remember the reasoning of an innocent young child who was told that the dead person has gone to God’s house. The innocent child could not reason out that when a person is not able move, how will he walk all the way to a faraway house of God. With all the wisdom and the knowledge we have, we have yet to understand the reasoning of the ignorant child.

Tarapore where my then Trustee, Mr. Ardeshir Tarapore, took care of me like a son. He valued my service to the Atash Padshah there. Those 10 years of my early life gave me the courage to take up this pious work of serving the Dadgah Saheb here. At Satara Agiary, the spiritual effect of the Atash Padshah has been miraculous for me, as I have been able to meet

and connect with noble souls in human forms in all these years, and have felt at peace with them. My good, cordial relations with all the members of the Cooper family and their constant support have been major plus points in me settling here.P.T.: What, according to you, should be done to save several unattended Agiaries where the Holy Fires face extinction?

Mr. Yazdi: I strongly feel that

his personal life, that a Mobed and caretaker dedicates to the Atash Padshah at Agiaries around India, there are very few who get good and favourable results from their supporters, be it the Trustees or Bedins. This needs to be changed. Please value the presence of a Mobed and

caretaker while he is there rather than grieve about it, once he is gone.

Soon after I visited the Khan Agiary with Mr. Yazdi, I was pleased to see the cleanliness maintained at the Agiary, in spite of its diminished footfall. The most effective change was in Mr. Yazdi, as he wore his Jamo, white topi, and sapat. It was a superb transformation for

an otherwise simple looking man. Once at the Keblah room, Mr. Yazdi proved, by his clear worded and loud prayers with perfect pronunciations, that he is no different from a regular Mobed when it comes to performing his duties. I wish there were more Zarthostis visiting this Agiary to witness this effect which comes over a man who is totally dedicated to his work.

Sixteen students of the Gopal Sharma Group of Schools along with their

Principal, Mrs. Gool Ghadiali, recently visited NASA in USA. The main exposure of this 12-day visit was a rigorous three-day camp organised at the Kennedy Space Centre (NASA), Orlando, USA. An ‘Astronaut Training

course was organised for the students, providing an exposure to zero gravity experience, various live space shuttles (including the Apollo and Atlantis), interaction with astronauts, engineering challenges, shuttle launch experience in a simulator, and a travelling in space experience through a 4D IMAX theatre. Astronaut interactions included lunches and sessions with them, giving umpteen opportunities to the students to converse with them and understand what it takes to become an astronaut and choose it as a career option. Mr. Mark Lee, an astronaut who has visited space 4 times, described to the students the life in space, his experiences in space, and how he decided to become an astronaut.

Of the experience, Mrs. Ghadiali says, “This exposure for my students at the Kennedy Space Centre, NASA, provided an excellent

opportunity for their overall development and building a long-term vision for oneself. Such visits build a global view for the students and prepare them for the competition ahead, as they step into the world for shaping their careers. The Gopal Sharma Group of Schools believes in ensuring holistic development of students and innovatively provides such exposure to the students. Apart from the Space Camp, we ensured that the students also experienced other places at the East Coast of U S A , m a k i n g the overall exposure a n e n r i c h i n g

In addition to the Space Camp, the students and Mrs. Ghadiali also visited places like New York, Washington, and Buffalo. At the world’s

the students visited the Empire State Building, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Ground Zero (site of World Trade Centre), and the UN

Headquarters. The amazing experience of viewing the Statue of Liberty left many of

the students mesmerised. The history of Washington was brought alive for the students with visits to the US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam, Korean and World War 2 Memorials, the Smithsonian Museum, and the National Mall. On the way to the scenic Niagara Falls, Buffalo, the students were taken

to Hershey’s C h o c o l a t e World Factory,

giving them insights on

how one of the w o r l d ’ s

l a r g e s t

chocolate manufacturing plants is operated. At the Niagara Falls, the unbelievable night view and day experience through the boat ride on the ‘Maid of Mist’ left the students captivated. At Orlando, along with the Kennedy Space Center, they also visited the Disneyland, Universal Studios, and experienced the commercial life and shopping at the Florida Mall and Walmart.

On 8th June 2014, 35 senior citizens gathered at the Dadar

Rustom Framna Agiary to commence on a journey to the Pak Iranshah at Udvada. Omelets and Mutton Cutlets with bread were served as breakfast en route Manor, and a short break at Kamat’s for tea was made before proceeding on to Udvada.

On reaching Udvada, the group was welcomed by the Manager of the Sir J. J. Dharamshala. Some staunch Zoroastrians took baths, and the majority of them freshened up before heading to the Atash Behram to offer prayers and

seek blessings. On the huge balcony of the Dharamshala that faces the sea, tables and chairs were laid out, which could easily accommodate almost 30 people at a time, and this was where lunch was served between 1 and 2 pm. After lunch, some oldies stretched out on the huge benches while the rest were entertained with a few games of Housie. Prizes were given away to the winners, and at 3.30 pm the group started on their return journey.

A short break at Kamat’s for tea and biscuits once again, and the group continued the exhausting journey to Mumbai, wrestling numerous

repairs at the Godhbunder Bridge. Some got off at

Andheri and Mahim with the remainder ending their journeys at Dadar.

The Trustees and the Managing Committee Members are indeed very grateful to Mr. Xerxes Master, who has always given his bus for these purposes absolutely free of cost.

When interacting with the students on their return, they said that they had read this in the books, and now they were seeing it all live. What better way than to get yourself educated? It was a life-changing experience for the proud students of the Gopal Sharma Group of Schools. They were all praises for the School and their Principal, Mrs. Gool Ghadiali, who personally

took charge of this visit and accompanied them. They also shared that apart from the NASA exposure and visit to the important places, this visit was an excellent live personality development course integrated with learning skills on team-building and team-work, leadership and social skills and managing oneself.

ek blessings On the huge Andheri and Mahim withSenior Citizens’ Day Trip to Udvada!

An adventurous educator & Principal takes her students to NASA and beyond on a 12 day trip to USA.

The process of evolution from quadripedal (being on four legs) to

bipedal (being on two legs) has given the greatest gift to humans of freely using their upper limbs for various functions. The hand is the keystone of this functional upper limb.Another gift to mankind is the opposed thumb, i.e. the thumb is placed in a different plane

A MUST READ FOR OLDIES IN BAUGS AND THE CHILDREN WHO LOOK AFTER THEM

The target is to create a world of Conciousness and Oneness, the

methodology is through Practitioners like Kashmira Elavia. Parsi Times Reporter Farokh Dordi speaks with the Internationally

Bars® Facilitator to understand more about this fascinating way of healing.P.T.: How can

children/people with special needs be helped by Access

Consciousness®?Kashmira Elavia: Access Bars® works like magic for children and ‘special’ children. Children who come into the world with ADD

Hyperactivity Disorder), OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and Autism are labeled as or referred to as disabled or having special needs. We would like to re-

reference this point of view and call them not ‘special needs’ children but ‘special talents’ children… or X-Men.

What if these children we are calling ‘disabled’ actually have greater abilities than their so-called ‘normal’ counterparts?

Parents are using Access Bars® to assist their children to have fun in school, study easier, and test better, with less nagging and better

grades abound.“After running the bars,

my son has become calmer and his negativity has reduced. He feels relaxed and his understanding has improved,” says Khushnum Muglai of Ahmedabad about her special needs son.

If you feel like Access Consciousness® has struck a chord with you, please visit the website www.accessconsciousness.com.

In our June 7th 2014 issue, Parsi Times carried an enlightening article of an interview with Kashmira Elavia on Access Consciousness® and Access Bars®. Here is another question we got answered:

Dear Mamaiji, You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Dae Pa Adar Roj. What does that mean?Dear Dikri,Today is Dae Pa Adar Roj. There are some Yezatas (Divine Beings) who are meant to be assistants to other Yezatas. They are called Hamkaras, or friends. They also stand for Ahura Mazda’s grace. Dae Pa Adar is one of these. He assists the Mighty Yezad, Adar. Dae Pa Adar is tasked with looking after all the Holy Fires in the various Fire Temples on Earth. He helps you connect closer with the Energy of the Holy Fire. While one offers prayers to the Holy Fire, do remember to say a word of thanks to Dae Pa Adar too. When you reach a stage of high spiritual growth, ask Dae Pa Adar Yezat to help you radiate your light to others

wisdom, love, generosity, and spiritual nature. With inputs from Parvez J. Daruwala

Many websites or online services insist on giving them your e-mail id before you can access their content. Very often, if you give your normal e-mail id, it may be used for spamming or may even be sold to potential spammers. 10MinuteMail.com is precisely for these situations. It will create a unique e-mail account for you, which you can access online - just in case they need to send you a user id and password or even if they want to verify that you have a valid e-mail id.

The best part of the deal is that the e-mail id is absolutely free and will self-destruct in 10 minutes! So no one can ever send mails to that id. Your main e-mail will always be protected, since it was never disclosed! A great disposable e-mail id service, which you can use over and over.

Mrs. Mani Pastakia is a newbie at the Home having arrived here just four months ago. She shifted here from her Bandra residence in order to give company to her sister, Ms. Freny Akolawala with whom she currently shares her room and life.

Mrs. Mani was a simple housewife who took great pleasure in executing her household chores and decorating her house to suits her family’s taste. “I love cooking especially Papeta-Ma-Ghosh’ says a bubbly Mrs. Mani who seems to be an ardent foodie like any other Bawaji.

Inspite of being a housewife, Mrs. Mani did not let her life be limited to the four walls of her home. She extended a helping hand to all her neighbors at the time of need, just like a cute little ‘girl next door’ would.

Mrs. Mani did not have the heart to leave her sister alone at the Old Age Home and decided to shift in with her. Thus, at the same time pampering herself with much deserved rest and getting to spend some quality time with her beloved sis!

Most restaurants serving Parsi food as well as all the quintessential Irani cafes are

found in South Mumbai. There are few and far between found in the northern parts of the city, and it’s a pity. Parsi food is fast becoming a cuisine most Mumbaikars not only recognise but merrily relish.

Tucked away in a corner in Pali Market is Bandra’s very own Parsi Pride - Ashmick’s Snack Shack. Over the last couple of years, this hole in the wall restaurant has become increasingly popular for not just its snacks but its full-bodied Parsi menu. The restaurant has been around for the better part of the last decade, but has shot to fame only in the last couple of years. Not only do the college kids

crowd during lunch break, but even the rich and famous have fallen in love with this shack. Famous names like Nauheed Cyrusi, John Abraham’s family, Vidya Malwade, and even Karan Johar’s mother are loyal fans of Ashmick’s Dhansak. However, don’t expect to drop in and see them lounging over custard. Most of these are home delivery orders or else there would be pandemonium in Pali market!

Thursdays and Sundays are dedicated to Dhansak, and this heavy lentil treat is available only on these two days. Needless to say, it’s extremely popular and sells out every time. There are a host of things to choose from - Cutlets, Patra Ni Macchi,

Sali Boti, and all the usual suspects on the Parsi menu. The Biryanis served here are also popular, but my personal favourite is Ashmick’s delicious Prawn Curry or Kolmi Curry Chawal.

If a full-blown meal or rice and gravy is too much for you, then don’t worry. There are sandwiches and burgers on the menu, which work

from the usual burgers. The best part about Snack Shack is their price p o i n t . Almost all b u r g e r s are under Rs. 100 and might I add extremely

the Dhansaks and curries included, are in the range of Rs. 200 - 250 a plate and once again, more than enough to

In a city where food has become ridiculously e x p e n s i v e , places like these are a haven for food lovers. Minoo Pavri has done a remarkable job of c h u r n i n g out some e x c e l l e n t food (all the recipes are his own) and maintaining an affordable rate for his customers.
