President Uhuru Kenyatta has reminded Kenyans to play their civic duty of securing the country saying

Kenya’s safety, her freedom and prosperity are not a preserve of the state’s security machinery.

“Our communities and, indeed, every citizen must also play their part. Therefore, I call upon the local communities and leadership to collaborate with security agencies to achieve the success we desire,” the President said.

The Head of State spoke on Thursday in Lamu County during the presentation of the Presidential and Regimental Colours to the Kenya Navy Manda Bay Base, an exercise that will see the military installation gain expanded operational autonomy as it sets out to become a more geo-strategic facility for national, regional and global security operations.

The President pointed out that the multi-faceted nature of security challenges facing the country calls for greater cooperation between citizens and the nation’s security

President Kenyatta reminds Kenyans to play their role in the country’s security

agencies. On the role played by the Kenya

Navy Manda Bay in the country’s complex security architecture, the Head of State said the frontline military installation plays a critical role in defending Kenya’s sovereignty, maintaining territorial integrity, and securing the nation’s maritime borders.

“Given the growing investments in this part of our country and the promise of the maritime domain, Manda is an invaluable listening and watching tower for Kenya and Kenyans. “Every day, in ways both large and small, you embody the very best of Kenya. You are the vanguards of our democracy, and guarantors of our security, peace, and freedoms,” the President told the military officers attached to the naval base.

In order to fulfil the country’s development agenda without external disruption, President Kenyatta said the expansion of the naval base’s operational autonomy was meant to establish a military installation with adequate capacity to respond to all forms of enemy aggression.

“The Kenya Navy Base Manda Bay is of utmost significance in enhancing counterterrorism efforts and maritime security, besides protecting the country’s port infrastructure. In addition, this base boosts security in the region and guards vital trade routes that are the lifeblood of international commerce,” President Kenyatta said.

The Head of State singled out the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor projects such as the new port, roads and other supporting infrastructure as some of the prized national and international investments that the military base is tasked to proactively protect round the clock.

“The LAPSSET project and road improvements from Hindi through Bargoni, Bodhei, Baure and Kiunga are ongoing. We are steadfastly committed to making the Boni area a peaceful and stable economic hub. Those infrastructure projects will support the livelihoods of our people within the region,” the President said.

He pointed out that emerging maritime security challenges

require responsive multilateral approaches, saying Kenya will continue to actively engage with her partners to improve its naval capabilities, and assured that the Government will continue allocating adequate resources to the Kenya Defence Forces to enable them fulfil their mandate of securing the country’s interests.

Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces General Robert Kibochi said the Kenya Navy Manda Bay Base is a strategic installation recognized for its centrality in securing maritime trade in the Indian Ocean from the vantage Lamu archipelago.

He said the military base’s trauma centre, officially commissioned by President Kenyatta, serves local, regional and international multi-agency security operations in the area including AMISOM.

Present at the colourful ceremony, also addressed by Kenya Navy Commander Major General Jimson Mutai, were Defence Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha, KDF Service Commanders, retired military generals and several senior government officials.

Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization Ms. Betty Maina has commended Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) for its transformation saying the parastatal has embraced the

change that has positively impacted the SME sector. “KIE has undertaken a thorough review of

its policies, procedures and processes aimed at transforming it into a more responsive and customer-centric organization to champion and accelerate the growth of SMEs in Kenya.

“The parastatal emerged seventh-best performing government institution in the recent Public Service Performance Management Unit ranking which underscores a remarkable turnaround for KIE.” CS Maina said.

The Cabinet Secretary spoke on Thursday at the parastatal’s Head offices in Nairobi Industrial Area when she presided over the official launch of KIE’s new corporate brand identity.

“Today marks a commendable milestone in the story of KIE which not only reflects the internal change the organization has been undergoing but also demonstrates a fresh, re-energized and new approach to serving Kenyan Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises,” CS Maina said.

Kenya Industrial Estates was formed in 1967 as a development financial institution with a mandate of spearheading Industrialization across the country through the development of SMEs by providing enterprises in manufacturing with industrial workspaces, affordable credit finance, Business Advisory Services and facilitation of linkages in its 37 branches spread across the country.

The agency’s Board of Directors Chairperson Mr. Mugambi Imanyara also spoke at the ceremony. He said the new identity was a culmination of a journey of transformation that involved an entire review of KIE’s operations, a total refocus on customers’ needs and a completely new approach to service delivery to SMEs across Kenya.

“The rebranding initiative reflects a transformation that is not only about policies and processes but a culture driven by innovation and exceptional customer service to SMEs,” said Mr. Imanyara.

CS. Maina also challenged the KIE board to rededicate itself to delivering on KIE’s mandate to Kenyans, through enhanced outreach to entrepreneurs, many of whom still face constraints in accessing finance, skills and an enabling environment for enterprise development.

“I call upon the Board and management to build on this upward trajectory and remain focused on delivering on your new brand promise to MSMEs in the country,” said CS Maina.

TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE

Amidst the rising concerns about Global Warming, it’s very little we tend to do apart

from ‘Talking the Walk’ and lamenting the Governments’ or Organizations, but what role are we playing as individuals? Don’t we have a collective responsibility towards the future generations. Day in Day out the Ice caps keep on melting, global temperatures ever rising, the glaciers declining at alarming rates atop of Mountains evidently as seen on Mt. Kilimanjaro, bush fires to mention but a few.

Sadly Global warming is not selective and as such the whole globe stands to be affected by the choices of mankind, as such both flora and fauna stand to lose due to the exploitation of our natural resources and the

carelessness we possess, hoping that someone else will sort out or mess.

In my opinion we should all take responsibility, in fact as Kenyans our national anthem is an indeed an inspiration ‘Natujenge taifa letu’ to all of us and as such we can set a precedence and a strong example for the entire Global population, it is without doubt that we Kenyans have an ‘unbwogable’ spirit evident from our victories in Marathons. As such this is also a race to save our planet, and if we all awaken our spirit and participate I am sure with the Almighty’s blessing we will turn out to be victors while demonstrating very strong leadership skills for the world to follow suit.

Not only would Kenya be dominant on the World map

but also the gratuity that would be bestowed upon our Nation for many years to come for the dedicated commitment and unified desire to change and improve the lives of mankind, animal and plant life on earth by painting the globe green and as such will benefit our future generations and empower them. With the right motivation and influence the results would be marvelous. I would once again echo the suggestion by many notable personalities the likes of Prof. Wangari Mathai to plant trees, though going a mile ahead proactively I would commend growing fruit trees. For instance Pawpaw trees considering our tropics and the coastal background.

Now correlating with the Devastation at hand due to the COVID -19 Pandemic, several

livelihoods have been affected with loss of employment and huge pay cuts faced by many, as such fruits can be an alternative to the daily sustenance of our brethren within our borders and beyond. In regards to my choice for Pawpaw trees I understand that it takes about 9 – 10 months to fruit, and it does quite well in tropical climates and as a bonus amidst the pandemic it would

also establish food security provided that we can all work hand in hand with compassion, thus it won’t be wrong to say that we got two birds with one stone.

Apart from what has been mentioned above just as an additional reminder trees play a vital role in reducing our carbon footprint, they also serve as a natural habitat for birds and

animals while giving us shade and acting as wind breakers, as such please don’t delay any further and just start decorating any such reasonable space within your reach with fruit trees. It just takes a seed to do the right deed. Go ahead and best wishes from the entire globe. Author: Mohamed Kadernani

By Karan Kamlesh Pandya

This festival, widely regarded as the birth of Ganeshji, is celebrated on the fourth day of

the bright half of the month of Bhadrapada - Bhadarva Sud 4 (which usually falls in September).

Ganesh’s Birth Once Lord Shiva left his

usual dwelling on Mt. Kailas in the Himalayas, to meditate in one of the caves in the same mountain. Two friends of Parvatijiji, his consort, suggested that she should have a ‘gana’ – attendant - of her own, because they were not too pleased with Shivaji’s ganas. Parvatijiji agreed. Soon after, using her divine powers, she created a son, naming him Vinayak. She instructed him to guard their home. When Shivaji returned, Vinayak prevented Him from entering. After some bickering, Shivaji beheaded Vinayak with his trishul (trident). When Parvatiji heard of this she lamented intensely. Shivaji realised His error. To set things right he sent his men to the forest to fetch the head of the first living thing they met. They encountered a baby elephant and returned with its head. With his divine power, Shivaji placed the head over his son’s body. Instantly Vinayak sprung to life. Henceforth Vinayak also earned the name of Gajaanan. ‘Gaja’ means elephant. Shivaji blessed him with a boon that people would first worship and offer him dedication in all their auspicious activities. Those who didn’t would not attain success.

Ganapati Vivaha (Marriage)

When Shiva and Parvatiji decided to have their sons Kartikeya and Ganesh married, they stipulated that he who circumambulated the earth first would be considered the best deity and would be

Ganesh Chaturthimarried first. Kartikeya flew off on his vehicle - a peacock. Poor Ganapati’s vehicle was a mouse which was no match for a peacock. Being the choicest devotee of God, Parvatijiji consoling him showed Ganeshji a simpler and quicker way. She advised him to circumambulate them (Ganeshji’s own parents, Shivji and Parvatiji), since the Scriptures propagate this idea, and thus he had reap the same benefit as going round the earth. Ganapati hence married first showing that one who obeys the wish of the choicest devotee of God or his parents attains his desired wishes. Hence Ganeshji is invoked first in all auspicious events, rites and rituals such as marriage, opening ceremonies, ground-breaking ceremonies, yagnas and so on.

The Shiva Puran cites another story. Prajapati had two daughters, Siddhi (wealth) and Buddhi (intellect). He approached Parvatiji and Shivaji for the girls’ marriage to Kartikeya and Ganeshji. However both girls wished to marry only the latter. Thus they married him. Siddhi gave birth to a son named ‘Shubh’ (auspiciousness) and Buddhi to ‘Labh’ (merit).

Therefore when businessmen and merchants offer pujan to Ganeshji and Lakshmiji they write ‘Shubh’ and ‘Labh’ inside their account ledgers to invoke the two deities.

This festival also inspires devotees to inculcate two virtues; obeying the commands of God and His choicest devotee, and consolidating faith in them, just as Ganeshji had faith and trust in Parvatiji regarding circumambulating his parents.

Sentiments The first person to observe

the ‘vrat’ (vow) of Ganesh Chaturthi was Chandra - the moon. After Ganeshji’s fame as leader (‘pati’) of Shiva’s ‘ganas’, hence Ganapati,

he was travelling through the heavens. As he passed Chandra - who prided on his attractive features, he slighted Ganeshji’s peculiar form. In return, Ganeshji cursed him, “You shall bear the fruit of your karma. Whenever somebody does your darshan he will be cursed too.” Chandra begged for forgiveness. Ganeshji then advised him to observe the Ganesh Chaturthi vrat and was freed from the curse.

By being aware of the detrimental effects of false pride one should cultivate humility. The Skanda Purana mentions this sentiment of the festival. The Vayu Puran advocates the observance of this festival by listening to the following relevant episode of Shri Krishna, to be relieved from false accusation, when Shri Krishna was falsely accused of pilfering the Syamantak Mani (gem) he observed Ganesh Chaturthi and was freed from the false charge.

Names of Ganeshji Ekadant (one-toothed)• To scribe the Mahabharat

Katha Ganeshji removed one of his tusks to carve a quill from it. He then scribed the epic on palm leaves as the sage Ved Vyas recited it. The scribing took three years!

• In south India there is a belief that when ploughing first began on earth, it was Lord Ganeshji who first ploughed using one of his tusks.

• In the Uttar Ramayan, Brahmand Puran and Padma Puran there is a reference of a battle between Ganeshji and Parshuram. During the duel, the latter’s axe fractured one of Ganeshji’s tusks According to the Brahmand Puran, it was his left tusk.

There are other names related to his body and virtues. A few commonly known are listed below:

• Lambodar - from the long - ‘lambo’, tummy - ‘udar’.

• Gajkarna - from the large

elephant ‘Gaja’ ears - ‘karna.’• Kapil - from his ruddy

complexion.• Vikat - heavy-bodied.• Bhalchandra - having

a Chandra (moon) on his forehead - ‘bhal.’

• Dwaimatur - one who has ‘dwi’ - two, ‘mata’ - mother; Parvatiji - who gave birth to him and Malini - a demoness who nurtured him.

• Vakratund - one who breaks the ego of he who behaves anti-socially (‘Vakra’).

• Mudgal - In south India, a special ‘Mudgal Puran’ extols Ganapati’s glory. It cites 32 names, while ‘Shardatilak’ lists 51 names.

• Vigneshwar - One who removes obstacles - ‘vignas’

Symbolism and Import Since Ganeshji represents

auspiciousness, his whole being has symbolic imports for devotees: Large ears - signify listening to God’s katha (discourses) with great zeal.

Small eyes - to do the Lord’s darshan minutely. Large forehead - to develop great intellect to realise God. Large stomach - depicts his great capacity to empathise with the woes of devotees. Short legs - depicts patience. Long trunk - symbolic of his deep scriptural wisdom. Mouse as vehicle - a hyperactive creature, symbolic of our indriyas (senses). Therefore Ganesh sitting on such a vehicle represents a deity of control over the indriyas. Four arms - which hold: ‘ankush’ - symbol for control over the mind ‘ladu’ - for happiness ‘pash’ - axe to punish the indriyas and antahkaran ‘ashirvad mudra’ - blessings for the well-being of humanity Depending on the role of Ganapati, the number of arms varies, as do the type of objects.

Festival & Ritual On this day every household

in Maharashtra installs a small

clay murti (idol) of Ganeshji in their homes. He is offered pujan and prasad (sanctified food items) until Sud 14 - Anant Chaturdashi. This is celebrated with great festivity and the murti is taken to a river or lake and submerged.

In Gujarat, an image of Ganesh is installed on Ganesh Chaturthi and worshiped for ten days. The murti is submerged on ‘Parivartini’ i.e. Jal Jhilani Ekadashi. Devotees observe a waterless fast. The traditional prasad offered to Lord Ganeshji are chopped cucumbers and ladus - sweet balls of wheat flour, ghee and sugar. Five pujas and arti are offered, together with a boat ride after each arti before Ganeshji’s ‘Visarjan’ - submergence.

In this manner Ganesh is a deity of auspiciousness, wisdom and wealth. Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival inspiring devotees to inculcate redemptive virtues in their lives.

Pupils from schools in rural areas emerged tops in an essay writing contest where over

23,000 pupils from 11,300 public primary schools across the 47 counties participated.

Mwongeli Mulwa from Makueni, Denise Nguhi (Machakos), Mitchele Rono (Elgeyo Marakwet), Melvin Koech (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Emmanuel Okinyi (Migori) emerged the top five winners nationally.

The five were feted at a ceremony held in Mombasa today and attended by representatives of schools from across the country at an event presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha and also graced by his Tourism counterpart, Najib Balala.

The essay contest was sponsored by Pwani Oil Products Limited, through its Sawa soap brand, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, and the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA).

The competition dubbed

“Colors in Life” aimed at sharpening creative writing and thinking skills among pupils in Standard 6 and 7 and ran from July 1 to 31.

Mwongeli from ACK Mtito Andei School, Denise (Machakos Primary School), Mitchele (Chepketeret Primary School) and Melvin (Moi Tambach Primary School), and

Emmanuel (Milimani Primary School) proved the creative writing mettle of learners from schools in remote parts of the country.

Five essays were shortlisted from each of the 47 counties and the best five nationally picked by a panel of 20 judges drawn from Pwani Oil, KEPSHA, Shujaaz Inc., and two external judges,

Shiko Nguru, a children’s author and popular musician Vivian Wambui also known as Vivian Kenya.

Prof. Magoha hailed the initiative saying it will help sharpen creative writing and critical thinking skills among learners.

“Shaping responsible citizens of the future must begin with producing learners who can think critically and express themselves in creative, innovative ways. This is the only way we can become a Nation of innovators and problem solvers,” said Prof Magoha.

Pwani Oil Commercial Director Rajul Malde says the competition’s primary aim was to offer a platform for the pupils to portray the best side of life creatively.

“Creative writing is one way of helping children understand the world we live in by giving them a voice to express their ideas and thoughts, a platform to explore their talents and imagine limitless life’s possibilities, even during these tough times,” said Malde during the ceremony to announce the winners.

He cited research conducted by the National Literacy Trust in the UK singling out creative

writing as playing an important role in supporting the wellbeing of children and young people during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We aspired through this competition, to inspire our children to recreate the world the world they live in through written expression. This was not just a writing competition but also an opportunity for participants to share their ideas and personal journeys with the world,” said Malde.

KEPSHA National Chairman Johnson Nzioka hailed the initiative saying it would go a long way in improving the education standards in Kenya.

“The contest not only helped strengthen the value of accumulating knowledge to improve writing skills and creative thinking, but also earn the participants recognition beyond the classroom. This is what the new learning curriculum is all about, that is, teaching children to be all around especially in their areas of God-given talents,” said Nzioka.

Pwani Oil supported the initiative while KEPSHA assisted with mobilizing participation

The five winners will be rewarded with an educational tour of the coastal region including a first-hand experience of Pwani Oil’s Kikambala Plant, the largest soap and edible oil manufacturing facility in East and Central Africa. They also received certificates, trophies and assorted gifts.

Creative expression is seen as an important aspect of nurturing responsible citizens capable of contributing positive ideas to society. Malde disclosed the essay writing competition will be held annually to appreciate the writing talents of pupils across the country.

Malde said the competition theme is based on the Sawa brand philosophy of “Bringing colors to life” which is about inspiring positive elements in people’s lives. Launched in 2008, Sawa has since grown to be the second most popular bathing soap brand in Kenya, also available as hand wash and body wash.

KEPSHA is the representative body for over 26,000 head teachers in all the public primary schools in Kenya.

THE GREAT FIREWALL

When your computer is accessible through an internet connection or

network, it is prone to attacks. However, you can restrict external access to it and the information that it has (your data) with a firewall.

A firewall is just another line of defense that acts as a barrier between your computer and another network, like the internet. It basically works like a traffic cop, monitoring and filtering traffic that wants to gain access to your operating system.

There are two types of firewall – hardware and software. Always remember that the decision to use a firewall is more important than deciding the type you use.

There are many ISPs (internet service providers) and vendors who sell routers that have an integrated firewall system. These hardware-based firewalls are particularly useful for protecting multiple computers at home or your small office from malicious activity. The downside to this is that it’s a separate device that requires trained professionals to support its configuration and maintenance.

Most operating systems (OSs) include a built-in firewall feature that you should enable for added protection, even if you have an external firewall in place. Firewall software is also available separately from your local computer store, software vendor or ISP. If you download the software version from the internet, make sure that it’s from a reputable source. The plus side to it is its ability to control specific network behavior of individual applications on a system but the down side is that it’s basically located on the same system that it is protecting, which can be a set-back to its ability to detect and

TECH TALK WITH HAMZA

stop malicious activity. Plus, if you have a firewall software installed on each computer on your network, you will need to update and manage each computer individually.

Most commercially available firewall products (both hardware and software) come pre-configured and easy to use but since no firewall is the same, you’ll need to read and understand the documentation it comes with to decide whether the default settings are sufficient for you or if it needs a little bit of tinkering (leave that for the professionals).

If you have already bought an antivirus software that has a built-in firewall (most reputable ones do), then there is no need for you to purchase it separately. Get advice from your friendly neighborhood technician or your local store before buying one.

Properly configured firewalls may block some attacks as they essentially help protect against malicious traffic and not malicious programs (malware), even if it has been installed accidentally. They do not guarantee that your computer will not be attacked. Using a firewall alongside protective measures (i.e. antivirus & antimalware software and safe computing) will strengthen your resistance to attacks.

Also, many pirated software these days act as a gateway to cyber-attacks so please STOP USING THEM! Support the developers, buy genuine software! Say no to piracy.

Alhamdulillah my family and I have not been affected with Corona so far but I know of

relatives, friends, acquaintances & neighbours who have been affected and it was never easy.

It was a hard for sure. Some families had it more

rough than the others. This whole time, we can’t

refuse to reflect on the story of Ayub ‘Aleyhi Ssallam.

Allah Ta’ala not only made him His Prophet but blessed him with good health, immense wealth and much abundance in regards to family and friends.

However, when he was afflicted with one trial after another including a painful disease, everything and everyone left him bit by bit.

He was left struggling and in pain pretty much alone, except none but only his wife by his side. SubhanAllah ( Glory be to God ) - Yet he remained so submissive and grateful to his Rabb.( Lord )

What we are going through globally as a pandemic, Ayyub ‘Aleyhi Ssallam went through it all as an individual.

Some fell ill and recovered. Others recovered but have

not been as strong as they were before. Some didn’t make it and others lost family and friends.

Still others have never been affected health wise but have had major setbacks in their business and have been left struggling financially ; which has

changed their lives completely. Our Merciful Lord says in the

Holy Qur’an :“And We will most certainly

try (test) you with fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits.

And give glad tidings to the patient. Those who say when calamity befalls them, “Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed it is to Him we are to return.”

It is they who will receive blessings and mercy from God and who follow the right guidance.” [2:155-156]

This goes to show as long as we are alive, we will be tested.

No matter what, whatever the circumstances, what we need to remember is that this world and all the distress, the fears, loss, trials and pain that comes with living in it is all temporary.

SubhanAllah, let alone the trials, even the joys and laughter too. So no matter how tough it gets, how painful it feels right now, how heart-breaking it might be, it’s never going to last.

What’s permanent is His promise.

And oh My! What a beautiful promise our Lord made to us.

The promise of everlasting bliss for all those who endure it

all for His sake - patiently, even though it hurts.

There is so much solace and comfort in the roadmap given to us in the Qur’an and Sunnah to deal with it all.

And then I look back and around me at the attitude of all of us - despite our different religions , during this calamity, can you see how far we have come from it all?!

It’s just me : Ahlam Mansur here, a believer of #hopebeyondlimits , sending a message of love, faith and hope to each heart going through any kind of struggle.

Like many entrepreneurs, mine is a story of ups and downs, of disappointments and

triumphs, and of persistence and reinvention. And it begins where the journey of many entrepreneurs does – wanting some pocket money. As a university student at USIU, DVDs were in hot demand with my fellow students. From each DVD, I used to make 10/- and bring home about 2500/- per week. For a while, business was good, however, as technology evolved and DVDs became outdated, that business died a natural death. So I was left asking myself, what next?

The answer came when I got repeated requests from people to supply them with phone accessories. As I started paying attention to what my friends and customers needed, my second business was birthed, and became Nurin’s Gadgets & Gizmos, where I supplied power banks and a range of phone accessories. The business grew, and expanded as customers requested for different and specialized accessories. But, over time, the market became saturated. Whilst I had benefitted from being one of the first people in the market, it started becoming harder to compete as more and more businesses popped up selling phone accessories, and as it became easier to import. Once again, I was left asking myself, what next?

The answer came when one of my best friends was getting married, and I wanted to make her special t-shirts for one of the wedding ceremonies. In that moment, my third business was birthed, and I began making custom designed t-shirts. Unlike the first two businesses, this one was particularly difficult to enter, but over time I had built a community of customers who had been with me from the beginning, who had watched me grow, and who trusted me. Through the struggle,

Nurin Devji: The Journey of A Mom Bossowners, one where the focus was on empowerment, and on uplifting each other. I found a community. I began promoting my business in the group. At first, there was very little response, but after a while, the engagement increased. As more people ordered branded t-shirts and accessories from me, they’d share their recommendations on the group, and soon my name began to be associated with branded merchandise. And right there on Mom Boss, the business finally picked up. I loved being part of the community, and so I was thrilled when I was nominated for Mom Boss of the Year. I was selected as one of the top nominees, and then came the voting phase. I already felt like a winner, because it meant so much to me that people were inspired by my journey, the hard work and the business. I had managed to build. The award ceremonies were virtual, and the excitement was

building up as they began a countdown to announcing the winner. The moment

the countdown ended, my doorbell rang, and when I went to answer the door, it

was them telling me I had been voted Mom Boss of the Year! You must be asking what next?

The answer is after the wonderful celebration, I

became Mom Boss of the year Nairobi 2020, and was featured in the magazine. It was such a proud moment

for me, and it really is incredible to see my name always being recommended in the Mom Boss group. I think back on my journey, with such gratitude for

where I have reached and I really couldn’t

have done it without my closest ones by my side. I

now have two businesses- my own (Clothesline Creative 254) and one in partnership with my sister - Nilofer Khan (Simply Creative 2021) and when I ask myself, what’s next?

I know the answers will come from listening to my customers.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank MaDaFu Newspaper for covering my journey.

these people (my true ones) were by my side, as I searched for the right suppliers, as I understood what the market wanted, they continued encouraging me, and this is what kept me going. Sometimes I’d go two or three months without a single order, but I did not give up. My marketing a n d

persistence paid off, and the business picked up during the December period and during special occasions like Father’s Day. This time I was left asking, how would I sustain the business?

The answer came when I was invited to the Mom Boss

5 Reasons why you are always broke and what you can do about it

PHOTO STORY

Despite many efforts to beef up your income and slim down expenses, you are

still somehow broke. You have always wanted to regain your financial freedom but that so far looks like mission impossible. What could be going wrong?

Why are you always broke?(1) You Are Caught Up In the

Gambling CrazeWhether it is sports betting,

lotto, pyramid schemes or hot-shot business ideas that promise to bloat your bank account overnight, too many of us fall for scams that promise extraordinary return on investment. Unfortunately, 95% of those who pursue wheeler-dealer deals lose.

The other 5% that wins comprises a few lucky fellows who are being fattened in readiness for the guillotines. In the end, the poor man continues to lose his hard-earned money and the cycle of poverty reigns supreme.

So, unless you’re a ponzi master or the so-called “betting experts” don’t gamble with your money. Pursue real, tangible investments instead. And if you must gamble, only spend what you can afford to lose.

(2) You Save but Other Needs Arise and You’re Forced to Withdraw the Cash against Your Will

Yes you are disciplined, you don’t like to misuse cash and you work hard like everyone else. When you get some money, you save some and spend some.

But a few days later, other unforeseen expenses come up and you have to empty your coffers with the promise (false promise) that you will replenish the account. Unfortunately the cycle continues month to

month. In that case it’s either you are

living beyond your means or you have too much access to your money. To avoid this, try to find some side hustles that can help you create multiple streams of income.

At the same time, try to keep your money in a fixed deposit account or SACCO where the process of accessing it is a bit more complicated. Develop a financial plan and stick to it no matter the situation you encounter.

(3) You Don’t Know Where Your Money Is Going

You get your salary, plan for it off head and decide that you are going to have just a “little bit” of fun, clear some debts here and there, drink one for the road and maybe save the rest. But unfortunately, at the end of the day you realize that what you are left with is barely enough to run you till the end of the month.

Sometimes you even have to go for a salary advance or hop about for an M-shwari soft loan.

So where does all the money

go?First and foremost, this is an

indicator that you are probably biting more than you can chew. Secondly, you don’t budget well for your money and even if you budget you don’t stick to the initial plan.

This is a case of lack of financial discipline. So start by inculcating some discipline, or else you will live to tell tales of how your friends succeeded while your money mysteriously melted from your pockets.

(4) You Invest In Depreciating Assets

Easy, I am not telling you to be a miser and ditch your expensive phone for a kabambe. Neither I’m I telling you to use matatus for the rest of your life because buying a car is not the best way to spend money.

What I am trying to say is if you invest your money entirely in things that lose value over time e.g. fancy furniture, phones, clothes, electronics and cars then you will always be broke. Take stock of the things you own today – do your flossets exceed your assets? Try

to achieve some balance. For every 1 flosset you buy,

try to back it up with an asset that gains value over time. If it’s buying a car, make an effort to get a piece of land of similar amount somewhere. If it is investing in an expensive phone, consider buying some unit trusts on the side.

In order to avoid being broke today or in the future, you must always obey this delicate balance.

(5) Poverty Is In Your DNAIn most cases poverty is not

a one-man problem… It is a generational issue. One of the most likely reasons why you are always broke is that your parents made decisions a long time ago that were not aligned to their (and your) future financial needs.

So today, by default, you have to pay for those mistakes… and if you are not careful you will end up handing over the baton of poverty to your children as well and the cycle will continue.

So instead of waiting for the situation to miraculously improve, perhaps it’s time you start making some conscious decisions in your life in a forward-thinking manner.

Break the rules, implement some radical measures and most importantly stop focusing only on your immediate pleasures. Poverty is in your DNA and you need to flush it off your life through a radical surgery. Take-Home

And the list of reasons why you are always broke goes on and on. Remember, you are free to make whatever choices you want, but you are not free from the consequences of the choices.

At this point in my age, when I haven’t lived, there is much to share. Our experience

can shape someone else’s life. Kea is a graphic designer by profession, mentor by passion, and entrepreneur by default. He is a true believer in self-awareness and self-leadership. A C.E.O of three dynamic companies. With the youngest being Icon Pro-Tech, a multi-media graphic studio and general cyber.

Why did I begin with a brief profile of who am I? Kenya needs creators; job hunters are not necessary. All over the country, youth cry about unemployment. Not youth am sorry. Teenagers who are educated, talented, and skilled complain there are no jobs! Have we thought of who creates

I SPEAK MY MINDthem? What if they didn’t create where could we aim to work? As young-dynamic leaders, we need to think without the box. The energy channeled in strikes, demonstrations and, many other activities showing the need for jobs is very vital and, if converted to job creation, the world would be a better place. Imagine being your boss, managing your time, finance, and doing what you enjoy doing best.

Being a creator, you fully utilize your leadership, management, problem-solving, resourcefulness, punctuality, networking, relationship, and many other related skills. All this brings about financial freedom that cannot be in job opportunities. My dream is valid. I dream of owning businesses that will generate income for my family and not be working in someone else’s

for a living. Note, if you earn a hundred percent equal to your input in a workplace, be sure your boss would have closed the business due to loss. Salary is a mental block. You will never get out of the trap and start your work due to loyalty. Being employed is almost similar to digital slavery. You can do what your boss has said and not what you want. You have limited time, opinion share, and limited income. Thank God your boss is not in charge of your fresh air

and gift of life; in other words, most of us would be six feet underneath.

In a nutshell, youth need to change the angle at which they view things. Jobs are temporary business is there to stay. We are all gifted differently and in a unique manner. We need to wake up and live our dreams. A friend of mine usually says, “Dreams are only valid when asleep when out of slumber you have to work towards making them come true.”

We have all heard of the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctors away”.

This is because fruits, such as apples, have beneficial factors that are required to sustain a healthy body. Not only are fruits delicious, but they are very nutritious too.

Nature has an abundance of fruits at its disposal, but you don’t need to have all of nature’s blessings together. Each kind of fruit adds a different set of nutrients and therefore, we will be talking about some of the most common fruits that can also be called “superfoods” which you can incorporate into your diet to stay healthy.

ApplesApples are full of nutrients

and are widely popular in any market. Apples have both soluble and insoluble fibers. As a result, blood sugar levels are regulated in the body. The fibers also assist in the digestion of food and keep the gut and heart healthy by ensuring proper functioning.

Apples also provide a good supply of Vitamin C as well as plant polyphenols. The latter are plant compounds that assist in fighting diseases. Moreover, having apples regularly lowers the chances of heart diseases, strokes, cancer, and other neurological disorders.

It is worth mentioning that while having apples, don’t peel

off the skin. Polyphenols are usually found underneath the skin and therefore, consuming apples with their skins is quite healthy.

BlueberriesBlueberries work as great

antioxidants. They also have anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful to tackle injuries. The blue colour in these blueberries comes from anthocyanin. Anthocyanin fights free radicals which damage cells and thus prevents many diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, obesity, and various forms of cancer. Blueberries are also known for helping memory retention.

You can check out other

berries too for similar properties. Blackberries, cherries, etc. are also high in anthocyanin.

BananasWe all know bananas are

rich in potassium but they have more minerals as well. For instance, vitamins B6 and C, and magnesium are also packed in bananas.

Polyphenols, as mentioned earlier, are also abundant in bananas. In addition, bananas have phytosterols. Both these compounds ensure proper health for your body. Bananas also offer prebiotics which is a kind of fiber that supports beneficial bacteria to grow in your gut.

Ripe bananas are a great treat before exercises as they readily provide energy since they are easily digested carbs. On the other hand, unripe bananas are rich in resistant ones. These green bananas provide a good supply of dietary fiber pectin. Hence, your digestive tract is catered for, and your blood sugar level is also maintained.

OrangesCitric fruits, such as oranges,

are great for their vitamin C content. In addition, oranges also have a lot of potassium, folate, and vitamin B1. Polyphenols are also present in these succulent fruits.

Having one orange a day reduces the chances of having cholesterol or high blood pressure. Oranges are also known to have anti-inflammatory properties, plus, their ability to lower sugar levels are a meal.

While having orange juice is helpful, try to opt for having whole oranges, including pulp. This pulp, albeit low in quantity, adds a little bit of fiber to your diet.

MangoesMangoes, also called the “king

of fruits,” are a tropical delicacy. They are also high in potassium and folate and have a plethora of vitamin contents. Mangoes have vitamins A, C, B6, E, and K. They are known to reduce inflammation and also consist of polyphenols.

Mangoes have a special compound named mangiferin. This compound is an antioxidant and protects from chronic illnesses, for instance, heart diseases, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s, and particular types of cancer.

Mangoes are also fibrous, and thus initiate good bowel movements to aid digestion.

AvocadoDid you know that fruits can

provide fat to your diet too? Avocadoes are one such fruit that offers healthy fats. The natural sugar levels are also minimum, meaning you get an efficient output from the fruit.

A monounsaturated fat named oleic acid is found in avocados. This monounsaturated fat is beneficial for our body unlike saturated fats from animal sources. Just like mangoes, avocadoes are also rich in potassium, folate, and plenty of vitamin contents. Vitamins B6, E, and K are present in avocadoes. This unique fruit also has two carotenoids that sustain healthy eyes.

This fruit also has more calories than others. The fat in avocadoes is known to lower harmful cholesterol levels. Avocadoes help in weight management due to the high fat and fiber present. These contents tend to make the consumer feel full and thereby reduce further intake of harmful carbs and fats.

So, if you wish to slim down or decrease your cholesterol levels, try having an avocado a day for a long period to get positive results. Don’t expect results in a week or two.

PineappleWhether you prefer

pineapples on pizzas or not, you can’t deny the health benefits this tropic fruit offers. Pineapples have a huge amount of vitamin C and manganese. The latter increases metabolism and helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Pineapples also have antioxidant properties.

The antioxidant properties come from the polyphenolic compounds present in pineapples. This means the fruit is also great to reduce inflammations. Pineapples have bromelain, which is an enzyme used for tenderizing meat.

PomegranatesPomegranates are highly rich

in their antioxidant contents. Having a long list of plant compounds, the health benefits this fruit provides are numerous. Flavonoids, tannins, and lignans are present which assist in the aforementioned antioxidant properties but also support tackling inflammations. They deal with free radicals and thus lower the chance of developing chronic diseases.

If you find it difficult to have whole pomegranates, having juice made from the fruit has also been accounted for delivering promising results.

Final WordsOur earth is gifted with plenty

of delicious fruits that help to sustain a healthy body. These fruits are not only nutritious but also help to prevent diseases beyond our comprehension. These blessings from nature are for us to reap. Let’s not regret later on by missing out on the wonderful opportunity to maintain good healthy simply by incorporating a few fruits into our diets.

Don’t pay heed to what people say. Achieve whatever you set out to accomplish and then bury them with your success.

MinimalismWhen you are reaching your

30s, you will see your horizons expanding in every direction. But before you do so, it is better to practice minimalism. Minimalism is a lifestyle technique where you only possess whatever is essential for your existence. You don’t have to go 100% into the said lifestyle, but practising it will surely prepare you for a lifetime of struggles ahead.

How? Well, you will see that you don’t need a wardrobe full of clothes to make yourself happy. Nor do you need to buy every new gadget that hits the market. Minimalism shows you how little you need to be content with your life. The fact is, we don’t need much to survive. What we have is basically what we need, the rest are just greed. If we can overcome the latter, we can surely pave the path for our future more conveniently and easily.

MeditationMeditation is an ancient trick

that helps you take control of your body and mind. Is it a myth? No! Though it’s difficult to get the grasp on the technique and execute it to perfection, even getting the basic grip on the subject allows you to regulate your actions in a better way.

People who meditate are calmer and more relaxed and can also show patience in the toughest of situations. They train themselves to be aware of the thoughts that come into their minds and can obstruct unwanted thoughts and shun them out. They can identify the morality of their actions and thus further develop themselves to be better persons.

If you are willing to become a better individual, do try a few meditating lessons. Don’t lose hope if you can’t get it right the first time. The test is about patience and virtue, and you will succeed only if you pick up those traits in the learning process.

Put Your Phone Down! It’s time to pick your nose up

from your screen and put the phone down. This toxic attitude needs to be changed for good. If you spend too much time on your phone instead of interacting with the people around you, put your phone down and take a look around. Some of us spend the majority of our daytime scrolling through various social media posts. The simple solution for this is to log out of our accounts or turn of notifications. Trust us when we tell you the real world is much better than the virtual world if you know where to look.

Instead of wasting your time knowing about the life events of unknown people, know the neighbourhood, or at least pick up a good book.

Social media is for entertainment and therefore, use it as a form of entertainment- not more than an hour a day. Break it down to 30 mins in the morning and then again at night. Don’t spend your whole day on the apps. Be productive and lose the toxicity.

To-Do ListSpeaking of being productive,

make sure you develop the habit of making a daily routine of the task you should accomplish by the end of the day. This can be as simple as having a haircut to as big as buying groceries. The main thing is to list every activity you should achieve by the time you hit the sack. This will help you to keep your tasks on track and you won’t forget to do any work. Either set up a daily or weekly to-do list and follow the list accordingly. Span out your work based on how much time they will take or based on priority, and see how you get through your work faster.

Final WordsIt’s never too late to learn

something new or pick up a new hobby or quit a toxic one. This list gives you a good insight, but each individual’s life is unique. So, if you have any other life lessons you wish to learn before turning 30, make sure you add that too.

Source: www.ultimateliving.com

Life lessons to learn before your 30’s

You can either say you are 30 years too old or 30 years young, however way you want to put it,

but either way you have to admit that you have passed about half the average life expectancy, and it is high time to get your priorities straight.

Life may be too short for some people but unless you learn to cut down on your bad habits and develop good ones, the thread will cut shorter. It’s never too late to start, and to start while you’re still in your 20s is perhaps the best decision ever.

In your teens, you are a bit irrational and still driven by the raging hormones and boiling blood that courses within you, but in your 20s, you have had ample amount of education and knowledge, and thereby gathered maturity to know to draw the line between right and wrong. This is the perfect time to reflect on your actions and make life-altering decisions.

With that in mind, we have come up with a list of things to abide by or say, a few lifestyle changes you ought to follow to ensure you live a happier and healthier life down the line. While it may be quite difficult to incorporate them all into your life, try to take one cup at a time and gradually make a shift for the better.

Quit Smoking!This cannot be emphasized

enough. If you are a smoker, it’s high time to put the cigarette down unless you want your children to see you cough to death. Smoking is injurious to your health and the ones around you. It damages your lungs and causes cancer. We are all aware of the adverse health effects of smoking. Therefore, before it gets worse, cut it down.

There are various ways of doing so. Vaping is harmful too, but far less than cigarettes. You can try shifting to vaping and then slowly cutting that off too. Or you can opt for nicotine patches. There are plenty of ways to stop yourself from smoking, so just do it.

Start ExercisingYou don’t have to work out for

a chiselled summer body. If you damage your car, you might buy a new one. If your house breaks down, you’ll build a new one. But you only get one body for a lifetime and therefore, you need to be careful about the body you are given.

You don’t have to hit the gym every day to ensure you have a healthy body. We won’t even ask you to change your diet. Eat whatever you want, but at least make time to exercise daily.

There are tons of home-based exercises that you can do. From planks to push-ups to other exercises each focusing on different muscles and aspects, you can choose whatever form of exercise you want to do at home. You can even run at the local park if you want or even on a treadmill at home. The important thing is to make sure your body is working its muscles and keeping its structure firm.

Maintain A LedgerAs you are getting older, you

are going to be dealing with a lot more transactions as the day goes by. You can easily lose track of the money coming in and going out, and therefore, falling into debt because too easy. Before you thread over the thin line, make sure you keep accounts of the money that comes into your pocket and your expenses.

You can simply keep an accounts book which you update at the end of the day. Or just have an Excel sheet that you can edit from your phone at all times. Have two columns, one for credit (incoming money) and one for debit (expenditure). Thus, you can easily calculate how much you earn through different sources in a month, and where you lose most of your money.

If required, you can even cut down on unnecessary expenses since you will have an idea of where you are spending your money.

Don’t Listen To Negative Comments!

Do you think Columbus bothered about other people’s opinions before he ventured out into the sea? What do you think would happen if he told people he would discover a new race of people? Most likely, everyone would call him crazy and laugh at him.

Likewise, don’t expect people to support you or have your back. Chances are, in this world, you are a lone wolf. Plan your projects to the best of your knowledge and have faith in your work. If you believe in what you are doing, keep pushing forward whether people support you or not. Keep grinding till you reach the mountain top. Once you reach the peak you will see people showering you with support.

In anticipation for the operationalization of the Dodori and Kiunga Marine Reserves, the Lamu County

Executive is preparing to introduce two crucial tourism and conservation bills.

The Lamu County Wildlife Conservation and Management Bill and the Lamu County Tourism Bill, will be tabled in the Lamu County Assembly within two weeks, and will help build the County Conservancies and provide opportunities for tourism investment.

The bills will allow Lamu County to oversee the Dodori and Kiunga Marine National Reserves, as per the provisions of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act 2013 sections 36 to 38.

The County Government is doing everything in its power to accelerate the creation of the Kiunga-Boni-Dodori reserves so that locals and the rest of Kenya can benefit from the reserve’s tourist and investment potential,” Governor Fahim remarked.

The Kiunga-Boni-Dodori Reserve has been identified as Kenya’s next wildlife destination, and institutional building plans are currently underway in both Dodori and Kiunga Marine, including roads, rangers barracks, and equipment.

“The County is working with a KWS joint committee to recruit 100 locals to train as wildlife community rangers to aid in the conservation of the impending

reserve, which is a great step toward wildlife protection, community prosperity, and job creation,” Governor Fahim stated.

The rangers will be trained in law enforcement, community relations, human rights, intelligence and investigative skills, and wildlife conflict resolution before being deployed to protect the reserve.

Lamu has a rich but untapped tourist economy, with some of Kenya’s best marine ecosystems, terrestrial wildlife, scenic beaches, and one of Kenya’s oldest cultural heritages, dating back to the 14th century and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In attendance was the CECM Finace, Budget, Strategy and Economic Planning, Hon. Fahima Araphat, CECM Education Hon. Paul Thairu, CECM Tourism and Trade Hon. Josephat Musembi, CEM PSM Hon. Abdu Godana and the County Secretary Mr John Mburu. Hon. Warden Ali Shebwana Bwana, Senior Warden Mathias Mwavita, Principal Research Scientist Dr. Mohamed Omar, and KMNR and Dodori Warden Willy Osore represented the KWS team.

Times have changed in our working lives, and loyalty, hard work and sacrifice are no longer

sure pathways to success. Yet traditional wisdom has not changed with the times and is crippling the professional advancement of many—even those in the HR community.

The traditional advice that suggests loyalty, hard work and sacrifice will earn you job security and a comfortable retirement is an outdated myth. Because corporations focus mostly on profitability (as they

must) and less on your continued well-being, holding onto such a belief is short-sighted.

Here’s how to maintain economic stability and well-being in a way that also sparks your professional growth:

1. Take a more businesslike approach to your career development. Recast your professional identity into “Me Inc.,” a small business that anticipates challenges, faces them squarely and makes decisions with the objectivity of a corporation.

Research shows that our professional lives include job changes about every four years

(tenure is declining rapidly) and three or more distinct career changes. Yet most of us have never developed the skills that are critical to survival and prosperity amid such changes, including how to:

2. Build your career like a business with you as the CEO.

3. Write a resume that gets results.

4. Leverage professional networks.

5. Quadruple the interviews you get.

6. Turn interviews into job offers.

7. Negotiate effectively.8. Anticipate layoffs.9. Fight age discrimination.Successful careers don’t

happen by accident. The key to success is preparation. To keep yourself employable, you must stay in tune with the new skills that employers are seeking when they hire people like you.

Twice a year, collect half a dozen job postings for the job you have now and the job you would likely pursue in the event of an unexpected layoff. Review those job postings to identify the skills employers are seeking. Consider adding any skills you do not have to your professional development program.

The old approach of pledging blind loyalty to a corporation that might, at any moment, replace us with a piece of software or someone cheaper puts you in jeopardy. There may be sunny days in your career now, but you know the deluge will come—and your survival and success depend on your being prepared.

NEWSSUSTAINABLE CHALLENGE

Brexit Britain has turned the clock back 50 years to resume preferential trade

links with Australia. The deal involves tariff reductions on commodities such as cars and wine, which are destined to travel 15,000 kilometres in opposite directions around our planet. Australia appears to gain more from the agreement, signed after Britain watered down its climate change requirements.

But regardless of the fine print vis-a-vis rectifying our climate woes, it is a step backwards related to Sustainable Change, when considering that Australia can acquire its vehicles within their Asian sphere, while at the other end European wines abound on Britain’s doorstep. Transport by air or sea creates carbon emissions, which cause global heating. Moving to buy locally is a step in the right direction; this UK-Australia deal points the other way.

In terms of dealing positively to address the climate crisis this is not the best way to proceed, but mega trade deals are something largely beyond our control as residents in Kenya. What we can do however is well within our grasp every time we walk through a shop door, if we choose wherever possible to buy local rather than purchasing imported goods.

It’s unfortunate that over recent decades Kenya’s

Buying locally beats transporting globally

manufacturing industry related to everyday consumables – textiles and household goods for

example - has diminished, but never-the-less we can play our part to support what remains.

There are many items on the shelves where we can choose local over global. Quality is a consideration, but locally-made can often be as good, if not better than imported. It’s a win-win situation: support local business whilst helping to tackle climate change. Some clear examples to make this happen:

• ESTILO towels made in Kenya rate as high quality, colour-fast products, at prices comparable to goods from outside.

• The wooden Kenyan-made mortar and pestle is a better product and cheaper to buy than imported plastic brands.

• For those indispensable bowls, buckets and containers, our KENPOLY brand is good quality and hard to beat in terms of price.

• Kenya brooms and floor mops are strongly made and often less expensive than imported brands.

I was caught out the other day when buying a hammer in a local store, realising too late that it came from China; the jua-kali version would have been stronger and cheaper. I had forgotten my motto: ‘check the small print to work out where it comes from’. When doing this I am always amazed by the type of imported goods which dominate our supermarket shelves; ceramic mugs for instance seem to be mostly imported, yet they are simple to make and heavy to transport. Surely this is one product that could and should be sourced locally.

So when you buy your next set of bed covers or floor coverings, you are assisting local industry by selecting Kenya over the rest, but you are also protecting your children’s future by helping to tackle the climate crisis.

“If you are in difficulty and in pain, go and pray in a quiet room with the door closed. If you still cannot find an

Prayerful people seldom make mistakes. They can find the answers within themselves.

There is something in life called “Social Capital.” The people you know; the people who know

you and how they know you. Quite unfortunately, people

think or behave like social capital is only needed on weddings and burials. That is why you see someone will not have contacted you in ten years but out of the blue they are sending you a

Social Capital

Our skins are very delicate and need to be catered for properly. We use a variety of

skincare products, but are they really that beneficial or are there other natural means by which we can take care of our skin?

While skincare products are quite helpful, they don’t solve all our skin problems. Some of the problems have to be dealt with ourselves by changing a few basic habits or taking necessary precautions. Hence, we came up with a list of guidelines for you to follow to have radiantly beautiful skin.

Avoid The SunSunscreens may be helpful,

but simply reducing your exposure to the sun is greatly beneficial too because the sun causes aging of the skin. This is prevalent in people with lighter skin.

Overexposure to the sun may even lead to developing skin cancer. Therefore, seek shades when you’re outdoors and also limit the time under the sun.

Also, wear caps when it’s too sunny outside. We tend to squint to see better, but all this does is create more lines and wrinkles. Carrying an extra head-gear shouldn’t be too difficult.

How To Take Care Of Your Skin The Right Way

Use Silk Or Satin CoversWhen we sleep, our skin

comes into a lot of friction with the fabric. If the fabric isn’t gentle on the skin, it can cause wrinkles due to prolonged creases. Therefore, having silk or satin bed sheets and pillowcases are helpful as they are smooth and reduces friction. This is because, unlike in a rough texture, our skin tends to slip over the silky fabric. On a side note, this gentle fabric also prevents frizzy hair.

Stay HydratedThis is a must for anyone

who wants to have clear skin. Hydration is crucial for healthy skin. Drinking doesn’t have a direct effect on your skin’s hydration though. It helps to regulate your body’s homeostasis and allows other organs to function effectively.

Drinking water helps the liver to function properly and eliminate toxins. Also, as we all know, it aids in the functioning of the kidneys. This is essential since the failure of proper kidney function gives rise to dark circles being more prominent. Skin conditions such as eczema are also tackled by drinking plenty of water.

So, what determines whether you have been drinking water

adequately? The simple measuring tool is your pee. If your urine has a dark shade of amber, your water intake is low. A lime colour means you’ve been drinking enough water.

Say No To SugarOur diet usually has a delayed

effect on our skin. So, it’s necessary to never slip on the restrictions we set for ourselves. Having a cheat day might be fun, but there are consequences.

We need to lessen the intake of added sugar and refined carbohydrates. Not only will a surplus of sugar spike up the insulin level, but it’s also harmful to our healthy skin. How is that related to your skin? Oil glands may go into overdrive because of the excess insulin in your body. These oil glands will create a breeding zone for acne.

Your acne production is also regulated by your diet. Therefore, it’s necessary to be concerned about what we put into our bodies. However, if sugar and refined carbs are too difficult for you to say no to, you can always rely on skincare products, although we highly advise you not to.

Stop Touching Your FaceHow often do you pop a

pimple? While it may seem like the go-to solution, squeezing the zit may cause you more harm than good. This is because of acne mechanica. Acne mechanica is a form of acne that is created by friction. When you touch the pimple and squeeze it, you might think you’re doing the right action, but instead, you are introducing more oil and bacteria into the pore.

Moreover, that instant gratification move you pulled may leave a mark. These popped pimples leave scars or brown spots. Just by being patient and dealing with the enemy calmly, you save your skin from further damage. Don’t rush into things!

Lukewarm WaterOur skin releases oil called

sebum. This wax-like oil is essential for our skin’s moisture. Using hot water causes the wax-like oil to melt. As a result, our skin gets stripped of the moisture it so desperately seeks.

Lukewarm water is the best approach for cleaning as instead of melting the oil, the temperature warms it. This results in a proper cleanse as the oil isn’t stripped off completely. Massage your skin for about a minute for optimum cleansing.

Manage StressStress and anxiety make our

bodies release cortisol and constant stress results in the hormone going in overdrive. High levels of the hormone reduce our glow by weakening the skin’s capability of retaining moisture, and by overproducing oils.

ExerciseDid you know that sweat is

helpful for not just your body but your skin too? Rigorous activities pump blood throughout the body. Oxygen and nutrients are carried by the blood to all the cells. Hence, we usually glow after working out. This regulation of oxygen and nutrients also help to repair our skin. Also, exercise reduces stress and eventually lowers the level of cortisol in our

body.

Avoid Cigarette SmokeIf you are a smoker, you have

one more reason to quit smoking. Cigarettes not only affect your lungs but your skin as well. This goes for vapes too. Why? Because tobacco releases free radicals which affect the composure of skin cells. As a result, collagen and elastin break down.

Smoking also constricts blood vessels. This means the volume of oxygen and nutrients reaching your cells are greatly depleted.

Exposure to the exhaled puff leads to developing blackheads, usually on the central face area. Eventually, aging, dehydration, and dark circles are resultants of this harmful effect.

SleepWe all heard of beauty sleep.

Now, it’s time for you to have yours. Sleeping helps the body to heal itself and regenerate the cells. It reduces stress, and thus the cortisol level. Your skin gets back its colour with proper sleep.

Furthermore, sound sleep also stimulates melatonin. This hormone fights fine lines and wrinkles, making you look young and plump. Sleeping also releases growth hormone which repairs damages to our skins.

Final WordsSimply by adjusting a few steps

of our lives, we can ensure a healthier lifestyle. Having young-looking and beautiful skin is an accomplishment that most people can’t achieve. Now that you know how to, get that radiant skill you always hoped for

message, “Hello so and so, long time. Btw, next Sunday is my pre-wedding. I need your support.”!

Social capital is not built overnight; it is reciprocal and does not need money (especially in this virtually connected world) to build. It just needs being sensitive that people have emotions and that you can’t sneak into their lives only when you need help.

Social capital is massively important and when built and used correctly, it can make a very big difference to one’s quality of life. It can save you money, make you money, get you a better job, make things easier and safer, it

can save you from prison, or save your life: it can save you time and effort, and make life more enjoyable and productive.

As we progress through the year, please learn to connect with people in your circles. Check on people, send someone a birthday message, check their timelines and comment something positive and inspirational. Pick your phone and call someone, or text them. It could be your relative, your colleague, your former schoolmate, a former or current boss, your CEO, your parents etc.

Creating a connection with people is important for building

your social capital. And even if they don’t respond, at least keep in touch and don’t just reach out when you are in need.

Most importantly, respect everyone no matter their status in life and be there when others need you.

Be a solution, an encouragement and inspiration. Avoid being a leech, a user or nagger. Just be a nice person who in a calculated way stays in touch with people and brings joy, encouragement and hope.

The most important asset you have in life is not your job, money or title; its people. Your network is your networth!

In Kenya, according the NTSA/NPS crash data reports, about 21% of the total fatalities on our roads due to road traffic injury occur to children aged between 0 to 17years. This is a huge number and there is need to mitigate these road crush related deaths

By E. Nyawira

Globally, children safety on our road is a very important aspect. Every nation

is working towards the safety of children while walking to school or at the estates, riding, using public transportation or school transport. The developed Countries have made milestones in addressing the road safety aspect by enacting legislations and policies to secure children because of their vulnerability. The UN Decade of action 2011-2030, provides the safety systems on the management of our road safety agenda which is the safe systems approach. In the safe system approach we have the five pillar; Road Safety Management, Safer Roads and Mobility, Safer Vehicles, Safer Road Users and Post-Crash Response. Through this approach we can address the various aspects pausing dangers on our roads.

In Kenya, according the NTSA/NPS crash data reports, about 21% of the total fatalities on our roads due to road traffic injury occur to children aged between 0 to 17years. This is a huge number and there is need to mitigate these road crush related deaths. Children are the most vulnerable because they are small thus making their visibility obscured. Also, majority of them may not comprehend the dangers paused by our roads and other road users. However, as a country, we have put in place legislations and policies which are geared towards safety of the children on our roads. Some of them includes Traffic Act CAP 403, school transport

Quest For The Safety Of Our Children In Coast Region

regulations, introduction of road safety subjects in the current CBC Curriculum which enhance awareness on safety.

In Coast Region, we have many schools located along the major highways and other busy roads. Children in these schools walk to and from school every day making them very vulnerable. Additionally, we have many businesses along the roads and parents operating these businesses will at one time have their children there. There are also vehicles driving within the residential areas which pause great danger to the children walking within their homes, playing or riding their bicycles.

With these eminent dangers for our children, the issue of children safety is very important and cannot be underestimated. Children, teachers, parents and the general public have not yet really appreciated road safety as a major issue in the region leading to injuries and deaths of our children.

General public need to set a good example while using the road. Children mostly learn from what they see rather than what they are told. Respect on the road is very key and obedience to law and regulations cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, we should all be in the forefront in putting up mitigation measures to curb the deaths and injuries on our roads. The general public should be ready to volunteer information on risky road stretches and risky behaviors on the road to the relevant government authorities for action. The parents and teachers should speak to their children about road safety. They

The Brain Of An Elderly Person

should discuss the safest route, where is the child supposed to cross, obedience to traffic signs amongst other issues. Additionally, they should set good example while always using the road.

Road Authorities and the County Governments should provide infrastructure with safety road furniture, for example the provision of Non-Motorized Transport facilities (NMTs) favourable to the children road users. Some of the NMTs include installations of 30km/hr speed limit signages near schools and estates, installation of speed bumps and demarcation the pedestrian crossings, providing the pedestrians walkways along motor able roads and generally build forgiving roads where

even when there is a crash, the victims will not suffer fatal injuries. There is also need to have an NMT policy in each County to guide on the provision of these facilities.

The National police service has a mandate of enforcing all laws and regulations which are in force. Enforcement of laws and regulations is also very paramount to ensure that all Laws and regulations are adhered to for the safety of all the road users.

National Transport and Safety Authority in partnership with the Ministry of Education, churches and NGAO, commit to undertake sensitizations for children, parents and school management on road safety to ensure that the children are safe. Education and sensitization is also very key to ensure that the children are aware of the dangers paused by the use of roads and safe road use. The Authority also does road safety audits on already constructed roads to come up with treatment for unsafe stretches and derive reports with viable recommendations. These reports are shared with relevant authorities for implementation.

Therefore, in the region, there is need to embrace stakeholders management and co-ordination. This is very key in ensuring that every player in the sector is live to the fact that there is need to address issues affecting our children as road users.

With such synergy through stakeholders management and co-ordination, we can confidently guarantee the safety of our children on the roads.

The director of the George Washington University College of Medicine argues that

the brain of an elderly person is much more plastic than is commonly believed. At this age, the interaction of the right and left hemispheres of the brain becomes harmonious, which expands our creative possibilities. That is why among people over 60 you can find many personalities who have just started their creative activities.

Of course, the brain is no longer as fast as it was in youth. However, it wins in flexibility. That is why, with age, we are more likely to make the right decisions and are less exposed to negative emotions. The peak of human intellectual activity occurs at about 70 years old, when the brain begins to work at full strength.

Over time, the amount of myelin in the brain increases, a substance that facilitates the rapid passage of signals between neurons. Due to this, intellectual abilities are increased by 300% compared to the average.

And the peak of active production of this substance falls on 60-80 years of age. Also interesting is the fact that after 60 years, a person can use 2 hemispheres at the same time. This allows you to solve much more complex problems.

Professor Monchi Uri from the University of Montreal believes that the brain of an elderly person chooses the least energy-intensive path, cutting unnecessary and leaving only the right options for solving the problem. A study was conducted in which different age groups took part. Young people were confused a lot when passing the tests, while those over 60 made the right decisions.

Now let’s look at the features of the brain at the age of 60-80. They are really rosy.

FEATURES OF THE BRAIN OF AN ELDERLY PERSON.

1. The neurons of the brain do not die off, as everyone around them says. Connections between them simply disappear if a person does not engage in mental work.

2. Absent-mindedness and forgetfulness appear due to an overabundance of information. Therefore, you do not need to focus your whole life on unnecessary trifles.

3. Beginning at the age of 60, a person, when making decisions, uses not one hemisphere at the same time, like young people, but both.

4. Conclusion: if a person leads a healthy lifestyle, moves, has a feasible physical activity and has full mental activity, intellectual abilities DO NOT decrease with age, but only GROW, reaching a peak by the age of 80-90 years.

So don’t be afraid of old age. Strive to develop intellectually. Learn new crafts, make music, learn to play musical instruments, paint pictures! Dance! Take an interest in life, meet and communicate with friends, make plans for the future, travel as best you can. Don’t forget to go to shops, cafes, concerts. Do not lock yourself alone - it is destructive for any person. Live with the thought: all the good things are still ahead of me!

Information!

A large study in the United States found that:

• The most productive age of a person is from 60 to 70 years;

• The 2nd most productive human stage is the age from 70 to 80 years old;

• 3rd most productive stage - 50 and 60 years old.

• Before that, the person has not yet reached his peak.

• The average age of the Nobel Prize laureates is 62;

• The average age of the presidents of the 100 largest companies in the world is 63 years;

• The average age of pastors in the 100 largest churches in the United States is 71;

• The average age of dads is 76 years.

• This confirms that a person’s best and most productive years are between 60 and 80 years of age.

• This study was published by a team of doctors and psychologists in the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE.

• They found that at 60 you reach the peak of your emotional and mental potential, and this continues until you are 80.

• Therefore, if you are 60, 70 or 80 years old, you are at the best level of your life.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Dental Health: Oral Hygiene Care and Maintenance

Introduction

Th e temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that

connect the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull in front of each ear. The joint allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side to enable a person to talk, chew and even yawn.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) refers to any dysfunction of the TMJ. It occurs when the muscles and ligaments around the joints become inflamed or irritated. The condition may be acute or chronic resulting in pain that can range from mild to severe.

What causes TMD?Some of the causes affecting

and injuring the joint include:- Bruxism (teeth grinding/

clenching)- Dislocation of the disc or the

soft cushion between the ball and socket of the joint.

- Arthritis of the TMJ.- Stress; this can cause a

person to tighten the facial and jaw muscles eventually causing clenching of the teeth.

- Acute trauma; it is commonly seen in boxers after receiving heavy blows or whiplash.

- An improper bite also known as a malocclusion.

What are the symptoms of TMD?

Studies have shown that TMD is more common in women than in men and also commonly found amongst people between the ages of 20 to 40. Some of the symptoms include:

- Pain or tenderness around the joint when you chew or speak.

- Earaches, toothaches and headaches.

- Difficulty in opening your mouth wide.

- Jaws that get ‘stuck’ or ‘locked’ in the open or closed mouth position.

- Clicking or popping sounds during jaw movements.

- Changes in the way your teeth meet each other.

- Swelling on the side of the face.

How is TMD managed and treated?

TMD is normally diagnosed during a dental checkup. Dental x-rays, dental CT scans or MRI may be required to assess the condition of the TMJ and its surrounding soft tissues.

Conservative and non-surgical therapies can be used to alleviate TMD symptoms. Such treatments include:

- Application of hot or cold packs around the TMJ.

- Eating soft foods; this would prevent the jaw from overworking and reduce jaw movements.

- Use of medications; certain analgesics (painkillers) and muscle relaxants will make the jaw muscles relax and subsequently relieve the symptoms. In severe cases of TMD, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication may be prescribed by your oral healthcare professional.

- Use of a splint or a night guard; these appliances prevent the teeth from coming into contact and lessen the effects of clenching or grinding.

- Avoid extreme jaw movements such as extreme yawning and cracking or chewing hard foods.

- Undergoing corrective dental treatments such as replacement of missing teeth and aligning of crowded teeth.

If conservative treatments have been unsuccessful, then a surgical approach may be required.

Practicing good posture, wearing of a night guard if you grind your teeth, use of a mouth guard when playing contact sports, practicing relaxation and stress reduction techniques will reduce the risk of developing TMJ dysfunction. Prompt treatment can help you manage the condition and improve your overall quality of life.

Tatu City’s owner and developer, Rendeavour, and Konza Technopolis Development Authority

(KoTDA), the agency that oversees the development of Konza Technopolis, have agreed to establish an association for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to catalyse economic development in the country.

The move, aimed at championing economic zone policies and a conducive operating environment for SEZ Enterprises, seeks to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the country as well as promoting domestic investment. The engagement will further enable upcoming SEZs in the country to speak with one voice and champion economic development.

Speaking during a courtesy call to Tatu City by KoTDA, Preston Mendenhall, Chief Operating Officer, Tatu City said:

“Konza Technopolis and Tatu City are sister cities charting Kenya’s path toward sustainable urban development and the ease of doing business on the continent. Tatu City is delighted to deepen its engagement with Konza Technopolis by agreeing to establish an association of SEZs dedicated to the country’s economic prosperity and business climate.”

Commenting on the visit, KoTDA CEO Eng John Tanui noted that the engagement propels the joint development of smart cities with a focus on three areas: promotion of the cities, promotion of SEZs and the utilization of the cities’ world-class infrastructure, such as the National Data Centre in Konza.

“We are glad that our engagement with Tatu City has continued to bear fruit and, from today’s discussion, we are pleased that the establishment of the SEZ association will

seek to promote investment in our country,” said Eng. Tanui, adding that the partnership has so far been beneficial to both entities.

Mr Mendenhall added: “We have decided, alongside Konza Technopolis, to act in unison because our collective effort is of greater benefit to Kenya’s economic future. Our establishment of an association of Special Economic Zones will be championed by Tatu City and Konza as founding partners and members.”

Mr Mendenhall noted that both cities are committed to demonstrating Kenya’s position as a global investment hub.

More than 60 companies have already taken up space

at Tatu City, with 13 of them operating as SEZ Enterprises.

Eng. Tanui said the Authority is already benefiting from the SEZs incentives with over 50 investors earmarked to taking up space at the Konza Technopolis.

The two cities announced their collaboration in January 2021, with a focus on building both mega-projects’ investment policies and positioning the cities at vantage positions for both local and international investors.

The visit was also attended by Arch. Dr. Reuben Mutiso, MBS, Chairman KoTDA, Justus Kariuki, Executive Vice President, Tatu City, and Tito Oduk, Director of Industrial

Operations, Tatu City, amongst other distinguished guests.

Both Tatu City and Konza City are building on 5,000 acres, each with mixed-use developments, including homes, schools, offices, medical centres, nature parks, sport and entertainment complexes and manufacturing for more than 250,000 residents and 30,000 day visitors each.

So far, KoTDA’s National Data Centre and Konza Complex are complete while horizontal infrastructure on Phase One is ongoing. In Tatu City, two schools – Crawford International and Nova Pioneer – educate 3,000 students daily and 5,000 homes are occupied or under construction and development.
