What Is Wrong With Buhari’s Speech?

In what took the nation by storm, Nigerian youths were spontaneous in their reaction in long-drawn protests across parts of the country against what they termed the brutality and the deadly zest of the Special

Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigerian police.Initially, it was assumed the protest which

started like a little spark, soon spread like wildfire through many cities across the nation. As expected many youths embraced the movement and put forward a five number demands, the immediate which was the call for the abrogation of the now disbanded FSARS.

Even as the FSARS was decisively dislodged by the authorities, it was soon replaced by the Special Weapons and Tactical .., a move that was considered too hasty by the protesters. This was soon to open fresh concerns among protesters who further added to their initial few demands. The broadened list of concerns by the young people, who dominated the protest, included supposed issues related to governance and then followed with calls for sweeping reforms in various aspects of the nation’s life.

ENDSARS Protest: Youths Uncover COVID-19 Palliative Warehouses In FCT, Lagos, Calabar, OthersBy Charles eBi, AbujA, Pat aBem, CAlAbAr, Ntia UsUkUma, lAgos

Nigerians across the states have invaded warehouses where COVID-19 palliatives were stored at various locations

In Lagos, residents attacked a warehouse where COVID-19 palliatives were stored at Mazamaza community of Lagos. The community is located in the Oriade Local Council Development Area of the state.

Video clips circulating across social media showed that the residents, led by some hoodlums, gained entrance into the warehouse and looted COVID-19 caches of food.

A resident told our correspondent that a bonfire was set at a junction not far from the warehouse, after which palliatives were carted away. The looted items were branded as COVID-19 palliatives.

The development comes against the breakdown of law and order following Tuesday night shootings of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki.

Numerous organisations and public institutions were set ablaze across the state on Wednesday.

In Abuja the Nation’s Capital Security agents have prevented youths from gaining access into the Arts and Culture Centre in Area 10, Abuja.

It was reported that some youths in the nation’s capital, borrowing a leaf from the discovery and subsequent carting away of food items believed to be palliatives meant to cushion the effect of the Coronavirus economic down turn in Maza Maza area of Lagos State on Thursday, converged at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre For Arts and Culture located in Area 10, where it is believed the food items have been stored.

But they were prevented from gaining access into the warehouse as security agents were quick to respond against the hoodlums.

The story was not different in Cross River State as EndSARS protest took a dangerous dimension on Friday in Calabar, Cross River State following the invasion of a government owned warehouse on Bishop Moinagh Avenue, off Murtala Mohammed highway.

It was gathered that the hoodlums also invaded the State Emergency Management Agency warehouse inside the premises of the Nigerian Chronicle and set the newspaper corporation ablaze.

According to reliable sources, the protesters uncovered bags of rice, garri, noddles and vegetable oil before the security agents

were mobilised into the scene. Our correspondent reports

that there was tension in parts of the city earlier on last week Friday as the #EndSARS protest continued.

The protesters who had gathered at Marian road moved through Murtala Mohammed highway to Mobil filling station.

They barricaded Big Qua junction by Diamond Hill up to the Governor’s Office. Some of the protesters burnt used tyres along palace road in Calabar South.

Hoodlums also broke into government warehouses in Akure, the Ondo state capital, and looted COVID-19 palliatives and set it ablaze. The warehouse is located within the Chief Magistrate court premises in Akure metropolis.

AljazirahNigeria gathered that the palliatives were given to the state by the Federal Government. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu did the flag-off ceremony of CA-COVID-19 palliative items distribution in Akure, the state capital on August 10, this year.

Acting of a tip-off, it was learned that the hoodlums stormed the warehouse and pulled down the doors, and carted away the palliatives. It took the intervention of the military to restore normalcy to the scene of the incident in

Akure, Ondo State capital.A viral video of the

incidents on social media showed people packing out bags and cartons of food expected to have already been shared by the government to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The palliatives include bags of rice, sugar, noodles, and assorted food items.

In plateau State, reports have it that hoodlums invaded the warehouse in Bukuru, Nitel area in Jos metropolis carted away the COVID-19 palliatives.

In Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State was also in disarray on Friday evening after hundreds of residents broke into the Covid-19 warehouse made away with all the wares in there.

The warehouse is located around the Ilorin International Airport, opposite Oando filling station.

Our reporter was on the spot and captured video

footage and pictures. It was like winning of a rafle draw or bursars sales as youths and women of young age were seen carting away food items like noodles, spaghetti, rice, sugar and garri in wild jubilation as if they won a fight. People used motorcycles and buses to transport looted items from the warehouse to their respective homes.

This comes a day after a similar incident occurred in Lagos and a few hours after the same happened in Osun State.

Government reactionsThe Federal Government has disowned the COVID-19 palliatives uncovered in warehouse in Lagos, saying the items were not from it.

Rather, the government said the inscriptions seen on the back of the items indicated that they were donated by a coalition of some non-governmental organisations.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development in a statement Thursday night, insisted that contrary to the belief in some quarters, the items were not from it.

The statement through Nneka Anibeze, Special Assistant to the Minister, Sadiya Umar Farouq, said the ministry was compelled

to speak out with a view to clarifying issues following insinuations that the items were donated by the ministry.

It read in full: “The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development has been made aware of trending messages on and off social media alluding to the fact that Covid-19 palliatives found in a Lagos warehouse were from the ministry.

“this is not true. The photos and videos recorded at the warehouse show that the bags of rice and other items were clearly marked ‘Lagos State Government and CA-Covid’.

“CA-Covid is short for Coalition Against Covid-19, a private sector-led task force in partnership with the Federal Government, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control, NCDC, and the World Health Organization, WHO, with the sole aim of combating Covid-19 in Nigeria.

“The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development did not procure, distribute or facilitate the distribution of palliatives under the CA-Covid initiative

“The ministry, therefore, wishes to inform the general public that it has nothing to do with the items found in that Lagos warehouse”.

editorialAlthough the government and the Police high command have seized every medium of their choice and convenience to convey the various moves already taken to meet the demands of the youths, they hardly could assuage the youths who assumed that the measures fell below their expectations, hence continued to galvanise support for the demands across the nation and beyond.

Indeed, celebrities and many influential Nigerians empathised with the youths and were seen taking active spots in the ‘struggle’ which was dubbed largely as peaceful. However, that tranquil and presumed peace was shattered when men believed to be soldiers stormed one of the protest locations, the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where scores of protesters were said to have been killed or maimed. This bloody and lethal incursion by these men became a watershed in the protests.

While the saga embroiled, controversies have continued to dog the action of the trigger-happy men who shot at protesters despite their seeming unarmed and haplessness. The military has absolved itself from such acts, even as the relevant authorities have maintained an apparent undignified silence. Even when the authorities had cause to mention the protest, they deliberately avoided the deaths that were visited on protesters in Lagos. That tendency to AljazirahNigeria is uninspiring and lacking empathy and moral fibre expected of exemplary leadership.

We commiserate with families who have been bereaved by the unwarranted attacks on the youths.

While we share in their grieves, we believe that their deaths would not be in vain as we urge that it should engender the radical changes anticipated by the protesting youths, only then can their deaths inspire a memorial in their honour.

We call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of these killings by the authorities beyond the often touted rhetoric: “We are on top of the situation, we will get to the root of the matter” which has over the years been the formal responses to such situations.

AljazirahNigeria salutes the courage of the youths who sustained the protests which resonated even beyond our shores, as seen in responses from Europe and the United States of America, among others. The protests which took on a global appeal are no doubt a new dawn in Nigeria since it has further amplified the unyielding spirit of the youths who are the nation’s future. They deserve to be celebrated despite the conflicting purpose of the hoodlums’ involvement of the protests whose aims were entirely debasing.

It is on a commendable note that we appreciate the youth’s enviable exploits which has served as a pointer that the people’s power transcends any other as we urge the youths to effectively shut down their camps for now and see how far the promised reforms would be achieved by the authorities. Let us accommodate rooms for agitations for another day, instead of dissipating all energies now.

We call on the government to take seriously its promises of reforms to the people.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, has urged the Federal Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the shooting and killing of some #EndSARS protesting youths in Lagos.

Governor Ortom,in a statement by his chief press secretary Mr. Terver Akase, made available to newsmen in Makurdi, condemned in strong terms the attack on the protester’s at the Lekki toll gate Lagos.

The governor lamented that visiting the EndSARS protesters with violence was not a solution to their agitations, stressing that democracy as a system of Government guarantees the right of citizens to freedom of expression including peaceful protest and argued that security operatives rather owe the people a duty to ensure that such protest is peaceful.

Governor Ortom, who described as unfortunate and totally unacceptable the killings of the unarmed young Nigerians, who came out holding the National flag chanting the countries National Anthem demanding positive changes against some unfavourable policies of Government urged the Federal Government to urgently address such concern’s as echoed by the protesters.

While advising the EndSARS protester’s to remain peaceful in order not to allow miscreants highjack the noble match towards a better Nigeria, the governor appealed to the Federal Government to carry out thorough investigation into similar killings across the country with the aim of fishing out perpetrators for adequate sanction

Determined to contain the ongoing violence occasioned by the nation-wide protests against Police brutality, the Akwa Ibom state government has extended the curfew period to three days.

Due to the degeneration of the peaceful protest into violence over alleged killing of a protester by an official of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS), the hoodlums were said to have hijacked the process.

Several buildings including the Anchor Insurance building along Barracks road; Access bank on Aka road, Ibom Specialty Hospital at Itam, The Choice mall at the Ibom plaza and the administrative office of the state-run radio, AKBC FM, were torched and telecommunications shops looted.

A Prison official was said to have opened fire in retaliation to the stone attack, after the protesters warned him to stay off the barricaded area of the Ibom Plaza, the Uyo, Akwa Ibom city.

Two others were said to have been killed at the Udo Udoma roundabout and another killed along Aka road, near the city centre.

The Commissioner for Information, Comrade Iniobong Ememobong, who announced the extension on Friday, said it was “based on security intelligence that the violence may escalate”.

“Due to developing situations being monitored by the state government and security agencies and the inevitable need to protect citizens and property based on overriding public interest, the governor Udom Emmanuel, has extended the curfew till 7:00 am on Saturday (today), October 24, 2020”, the statement reads in part.

Meanwhile, armed soldiers have taken over the major flash points, forcing long distance trek by road users to their destinations as commercial vehicles have been forced off the road by the curfew.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has warned about a looming petroleum scarcity in the country owing to attacks of petroleum tankers by hoodlums and the stalling of operations at petroleum depots across the country by #EndSARS protesters.

IPMAN Chairman in Rivers State, Dr Joseph Obele, stated this on a programme on Rhythm 93.7fm monitored by AljazirahNigeria in Port Harcourt.

Obele noted that about 10 petroleum tankers had been attacked and destroyed nationwide by the protesters, although lives were not lost.

He added that if the situation doesn’t improve before stocked petroleum products ran out in filling stations, scarcity would be inevitable.

The state chairman said, “About 10 of our trucks have been attacked nationwide by protesting youths, although there have not been casualties.

“Supply and distribution of petroleum products haven’t really been smooth being that 90 per cent of our supply came from Lagos and there has been a skeletal supply schedule in Lagos for the past one week.

“Thursday’s case was worse, all the depots in Nigeria were shut down, we don’t produce these products, we buy from depots and tank farms and if these depots do not give us products, we fear that when we run out of stock, petroleum scarcity will happen.”

Obele, however, ruled out the possibility of the association embarking on strike, adding that such an action would only further worsen the suffering of Nigerians at these trying times.

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerian youths to take advantage of the numerous National Social Investment Programmes, NSIP, under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to make their lives more purposeful.

The President made the remark on Thursday while addressing the nation on the #‘ENDSARS’ protests in the country and its aftermath.

He said despite the dwindling revenue of the nation coupled with the added responsibilities and restrictions of the Coronavirus pandemic,

the federal government has put in place initiatives to help small scale business owners, the youths, and the poor to help make them make a living.

“Government has put in place measures and initiatives principally targeted at youths, women, and the most vulnerable groups in our society. These include our broad plan to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years. There is also the creation of N75 billion National Youth Investment Fund to provide opportunities for the youths and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Survival Fund, through which the government is giving a grant of N30,000 to

Zamfara State House of Assembly has commenced investigation into the N37 billion promissory notes belonging to the state government collected by the administration of former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari at the tail end of his tenure.

In continuation of the investigation, the House has met Thursday with the state commissioner of finance Alhaji Rabi’u Garba Gusau and his Justice counterpart Barrister Nura Ibrahim Zarumi”.

In his testimony before the committee, commissioner of finance told the panel how he and his ministry discovered the monumental fraud by the past administration of Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar through the dubious sale of the promissory notes without due regards to the laid down procedure.

He said his attention was drawn to the fact that the federal ministry of Works and Housing was supposed to

one hundred thousand artisans and guaranteeing a market for the products of traders.

“Other initiatives include, Farmermoni, Tradermoni, Marketmoni, the N-Power program including N-Tech and

N-Agro. No Nigerian government in the past has methodically and seriously approached poverty-alleviation like we have done”.

President Buhari appealed to the youths to note and take advantage of the various well-thought-out initiatives of his administration designed to make their lives better and resist the temptation to be used by subversive elements to cause chaos with the aim of truncating the country’s

refund the sum of N37 billion to the state government for the execution of federal roads projects by the Yari administration.

The commissioner explained that when his ministry wrote to the Federal ministry of works about the refund, it was discovered that the money in question had since been paid to the past regime In two tranches of N14 billion and N22 billion naira respectively between January -April of last year 2019.

Rabi,u Garba said his ministry had also written to the debt management office of the federal government which later gave the detailed information on how the shady deal was conducted.

“The graphic records showed that out of the N37 billion naira promissory notes paid to previous administration in the state, N14 billion naira was the share of 14 local government councils which was paid in January last year and was collected by one Chinwe Juliet a staff of Nigerian Governors

Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle has insisted that scrapped Special Anti-Robbery Squads (SARS) was vital to maintenance of peace in the state.

Speaking after arrival from a meeting of Northern Governors in Kaduna, Matawalle urged the Federal Government to deploy the scrapped operatives to Zamfara.

He said: “We have recorded tremendous development in the area of peace building the Zamfara date with the commitment and professional contribution and support of the FSARS of the Nigeria Police.”

He said the unit has helped a lot in bringing down the level of banditry and hooliganism in communities in the state and described the sudden scrapping of the unit as amounting to throwing away the baby along with the dirty water.

Governor Mala Buni of Yobe State has advised youths in the state and the North-East geopolitical zone to distance selves from the ongoing #EndSARS protest across the country.

Buni gave the advice during the launching of the State/Guaranty Trust Bank partnership under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) office in Damaturu.

He used the forum to address 200 young beneficiaries of the partnership, pointing out that the state had in the past suffered effects of Boko Haram insurgency and should not destroy the hard earned relative peace it is enjoying.

His words “We have had our own bad times during the Boko Haram period. Those protesting in other parts of the country do not know what we went through in the hands of Boko Haram. We are all witnesses to the atrocities of these insurgents, which forced many of us out of our comfort zones.

administration’s commitment to the wellbeing and welfare of citizens as well as preserving the unity of the country.

“We will continue to improve good governance and our democratic process through sustained engagement. But remember that the government also has the obligation to protect lives and properties as well as the right of citizens to go about their daily businesses freely and protected from acts of violence.”

forum’s secretariat Abuja. “While the second trench of

the payment which was N22 billion was paid in April and was signed and collected by the Director General of Nigerian governor’s forum on the instruction of former governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar”.

More worrisome and disturbing according to the Finance Commissioner was how the N14 billion naira local Governments share was traded between the former commissioner for local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Bello Dankande Gamji and his management staff disposed off the promissory notes to United Bank for Africa (UBA ) at a giveaway price of N14 billion naira only.

“While the sum of over N22 billion naira promissory notes meant to the state government share was also traded to the same bank which is (UBA ) at the cost of N17 billion naira an indication that the government and people of the state were completely short-

changed”.Rabi’u further told the

panel that on noticing this clear cut of criminal breach of trust he quickly petitioned the inspector General of police Muhammad Adamu to investigate the matter with the sole aim of prosecuting all those involved in the promissory notes scandal.

He concluded that, “presently, the police command is still investigating the matter and the top ranking officials of former Governor Yari are being investigated accordingly.

On his own part the attorney General and commissioner of justice Barrister Nura Ibrahim Zarumi denied his ministry’s knowledge of any deal regarding the promissory notes scandal.

He said available records left by his predecessor indicated that nothing of such a transaction came to the books of his ministry or attorney general’s chamber that has to do with the N37 billion naira promissory notes.Sylva

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, has charged members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the alleged allegations of human right violations by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which sparked off #EndSARS protest across the country to be thorough in their investigations.

Governor Ortom, during an inaugural ceremony of the 8 member panel of inquiry headed by Justice Adam Unum, a former chief judge of the Benue State Judiciary at government house in Makurdi, said the decision is in compliance with resolutions of the National Economic Council (NEC), which directed that states- level judicial panels of inquiry be established in order to investigate cases of alleged police brutality with the view of bringing erring personnel to justice and compensate victims.

The governor who said the 8-man panel has 6 months to submit its report described those selected as men and women of integrity who have as well distinguished themselves in other assignments expressing confidence that they will justify the confidence reposed in them by being thorough in the course of assignment.

Governor Ortom, described the # EndSARS protest as a fight for equal rights and justice and expressed hope that with the presidential directive to the formation of the panels of inquiry at the state’s- level, it was an indication that their cries have been heard.

The governor commended the youths for their peaceful conduct throughout the period and assured them of government support as long as they are peaceful.

Ortom further called on parents to assist the government to appeal to youths on the need to maintain peace by not allowing hoodlums to take over the protests reminding them that Benue has had enough of killings.

Responding on behalf of members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Justice Adam Unum (retd) expressed appreciation to the governor for finding him and other members worthy to serve.

Protest: Ortom Inaugurates Panel Of Inquiry The Economic Community

of West African States has called for calm in Nigeria over the ongoing crisis in the country.

ECOWAS disclosed this in a statement made available to AljazirahNigeria in Abuja.

ECOWAS noted with concern how the peaceful protest by Nigerian youth calling for police reform, particularly the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had turned violent.

The statement reads, “ECOWAS Commission notes with concern that demonstrations by Nigerian youth calling for police reform, particularly the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police, accused of misconduct by those demonstrating, have turned violent.

“ECOWAS Commission expresses its condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives during the protests and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

While the ECOWAS Commission recognizes the right of citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and protests, it also wishes to stress that those rights should be exercised in a non-violent manner. In this regard, ECOWAS Commission calls on all protesters to remain peaceful in the conduct of their demonstrations. It also urges the Nigerian security operatives to exercise restraint in the handling of the protests and act professionally.

“ECOWAS Commission further notes that, in an effort to address the demands of the protesting youth, the Federal Government of Nigeria took important decisions regarding disbandment of SARS, comprehensive police reforms and investigation of cases of police brutality. It encourages the Nigerian Authorities to conduct the investigation rapidly.

“Finally, ECOWAS Commission appeals to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigerian youth and the civil society to urgently pursue dialogue for an early and amicable resolution of this social unrest and maintain the Nigerian image as a bastion of law and order.”

The coalition under the aegis of Stakeholders of Nigerian Youths, SONY, has appealed to all Nigerians, Youths to halt the ongoing #ENDSARS protest across the country and give peace a chance saying it’s better to jaw-jaw than war-war.

It is no longer news that the Youths across the country are protesting against #EndSARS for the past few weeks, a protest that has characterized the loss of lives and wanton destruction of public and private property across the nation.

Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja the National Spokesperson SONY

Embrace Dialogue, Cso Appeals To YouthsQueen Mary Onokome said the government is ready to provide solutions to the demands of the protesters.

The organization expressed that it is important for the youths to allow constructive dialogue adding that “No war ends in the battlefield, every war ends on the dialogue table”, this is the time to dialogue!!!

“We hereby call on young Nigerians to heed to the advice of dialogue not because we are afraid of dying for what we believe in but because we must achieve the aim of this protest.

“Youths of Nigeria, we call on you to sheathe your sword hold your anger in check, mourn the heroes who have

fallen for this just cause and leave the streets so that we will not incur more deaths, we are all pained but it is wise for us to strategize, regroup, and dialogue with the government.

“If they are not sincere in their promises we will come back and occupy the streets, because we are the future of Nigeria and we will not bequeath a broken country to our children.

“Let’s avoid more deaths from the hoodlums and enemies of our future, let’s avoid the destruction of properties and unnecessary loss of life and valuables, because evil people abound and will lie to see us go the way of Libya and Syria.

“We refuse to let our country burn and we are optimistic that the government will be sincere and genuine this time in finding lasting solutions to police brutality, corruption and other ills bedevilling our great nation. “ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS THE TIME TO DIALOGUE”

“We painfully appeal to our brothers and sisters that they wish to move the dialogue with the government, giving them ultimatum and timelines to meet our 5 points demands or we will be forced to stage a far stronger demonstration.”

The group also called on the government to leave no stone unturned to ensure those that perpetrated evil at the Lekki toll gate massacre to the book.

have a correct environment for you to earn your livelihood.”

While speaking in the same vein, the Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu reminded those gathered that they were indeed brothers and sisters regardless of ethnic or religious affiliations.

She also called for calmness on the streets, reminding all that if the protests were for the betterment of Nigeria, then violence was quite unnecessary.

At Dutse Makaranta where a customary court and police outpost were destroyed, the Minister of State said “We feel your pain. This is a court established to give justice to the people. We will be wondering what it has got to do with the protests and property being vandalized.

“This goes a long way to tell us that it’s just the work of miscreants or hoodlums targeted at government facilities.”

Precisely on Tuesday, November 3, the United States of America will officially go to the polls to vote in a President for another four year term, this is in tandem with the democratic tradition of having an election at the end of every four years when the tenure of an incumbent would have expired. The race this time would be between Democratic Party candidate, Vice President Joe Biden, 77, and the incumbent, President Donald Trump, 73, who is hoping for another shot at the White House as a two-term President.

Going by popular opinion polls and pundits’ predictions, just as it was during the 2016 U.S Presidential Election between The Republican Party candidate, Donald Trump and former Democratic Party nominee, Hillary Clinton, Trump is apparently the less favored candidate. He, however, shocked book makers in 2016 when he trounced the much more anticipated Hillary Clinton by winning the Electoral College votes by 304 to her 227 despite losing the popular polls to her.

As is traditional, AljazirahNigeria Octopus once more predicts Trump’s victory in the up-coming U.S Presidential election by clinging onto hindsight of electoral patterns to take a peep into the likely outcome of the November 3, race, having previously correctly predicted past election results including the recently concluded Edo State guber polls where the incumbent, Gov Godwin Obaseki floored his second-time opponent, Pastor Ize Iyamu.

By almost every measure that political operatives, academics and handicappers use to forecast elections, the likely outcome is that Joe Biden will win the White House.

Yet days before Election Day, the unfolding reality of 2020 is that it’s harder than ever to be sure. And Democrats are scrambling to account for the hidden variables that could still sink their nominee- or what you might call the known unknowns.

Republican registration has ticked up in key states at the same time Democratic field operations were in hibernation. Democratic turnout is surging in the early votes. But it’s unclear whether it will be enough to overcome an expected rush of ballots that Republicans, leerier of mail-in voting will cast in person on November 3.

There is uncertainty about the accuracy of polling in certain swing states, the efficacy of GOP voter suppression efforts and even the number of mail-in ballots that for one reason or another will be disqualified.

“There are more known unknowns than we’ve ever had at any point,” said Tom Bonier, CEO of the Democratic data firm TargetSmart. “The

cover news

instruments we have to gauge this race, the polling, our predictive models… the problem is all those tools are built around “normal elections.” And this is anything but a normal election.”

On recent video call with Democratic Party state chairs, Bonier laid out an overwhelming positive electoral landscape for Biden. But he cautioned that even small variations in turnout projections could have a substantial effect on the outcome. For that reason, among others, Democrats are poring over early vote totals, circulating anxiety-ridden campaign memos and bracing for a long few days ahead.

“We don’t know what insanity Trump will hurl into the mix,” said Matt Bennett of the center-left group Third Way.

“Every day is a week and every week is a month. It’s going to feel like a long time between now and November 3.

Of all the reasons for Democrats to feel uncertain, the most worrisome for the Party is the one that-for now- is going very well for them: Turnout. More than 27 million Americans have already voted across the nation as of Sunday, October 18 some were standing in line for hours, according to data compiled by the United States Elections project. In states that report returns by party, Democrats are returning more ballots than Republicans. Republicans and Democrats alike believe early voters in other states lean Democratic, as well.

But political professionals don’t know how great an advantage Democrats will build in early vote- or whether it will be enough to overcome the wave of votes that Republicans are expected to cast in person.

Flagging “clear warning signs” for Biden, one strategist circulated a memo among Democrats earlier this month citing increasing registration of white, non-college educated voters- President Donald Trump’s base demographic-

in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. There is no precedent for Trump overcoming such a large polling deficit this close to the election, the strategist wrote. “And yet…”

For Democrats, uncertainty about who is voting is only part of the equation. It’s also unclear how many mail-in ballots ultimately will be rejected, and in which states.

It’s no small matter. After the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in September that so-called naked ballots- those mailed without a proper envelop- could not be counted, election officials warned more than 100,000 ballots could be invalidated. That is more than twice the margin by which Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the state in 2016.

Republicans in other states have had some success in court preventing mail ballots that arrive after Election Day from being counted. A Biden victory may hinge on not only persuading Democrats to continue voting in the coming days- but to ensure they do so correctly.

There is uncertainty, especially, about younger voters, who are returning ballots at a slower rate than older ones. That is typical, wrote Michael McDonald, who directs the Elections project, in an analysis of the early vote.

“I predict in the run up to the election the Democratic narrative will change from euphoria over the apparent large leads in early voting to concern that a disproportionately large number of younger voters have yet to return their mail ballots.” He added.

In any other year, Democrats would have time-tested, if imperfect way to address their turnout concerns- thousands of volunteers and organizers knocking on doors to register voters and prod them to return their ballots. But Biden abandoned a door-knocking campaign due to concerns about Coronavirus until the final month of the election, ceding traditional field operations to Trump.

“One big known unknown right now is how many Democrats return their ballots,” said Nick Trainer, the Trump campaign’s director of battleground strategy. “In ’16, you would have had a Democrat volunteer or operative knocking on a voter’s door in Orlando reminding them to return the ballot on their kitchen table or go to the polls. That’s not happening today”.

Many Democrats will go to the polls, of course. But what they may find there is another source of concern for Democrats. Democrats are spending millions of dollars on voter education and voter protection programs. But in his debate with Biden, Trump called on “my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully,” which was taken by some partisans as a call to arms.

Mathew Littman, a former Biden speechwriter who was helping to organize a phone bank for Biden said, “I worry about

turnout. I worry about people being threatened when they go to vote. I worry about these gangs of roving militias.”

One reason that political strategist are focusing so heavily on the mechanics of the election- including turnout and vote counting- is that little else is likely to alter the course of the campaign. Republicans have all but abandoned hope for a dramatic turnaround on the Coronavirus or for a burst of good economic news. The election is still the referendum on Trump that it was a few months ago, and Trump is losing.

Whit Ayres, the longtime Republican pollster said; “major health event” involving either Trump or Biden could still upend the campaign.

But “It’s getting late, in part because so many people have voted,” he said. “This election could be effectively over by the time we get to the election date. We won’t know it, because the results won’t have been reported, but it could be over by the time we get to Election Day… The window for major event to substantially affect the election is closing”.

Polls suggest Trump will need every uncertainty to break his way to win a second term. But there is some uncertainty even about that. Trump cannot rely, as many of his supporters do, on blanket repudiation of public votes. Pollsters of both parties say they are more carefully accounting for white, non-college educated voters some survey missed in 2016.

Yet many Democrats continue to suspect so-called quiet or shy Trump voters still exist- those who refuse to tell pollsters they support a deeply polarizing president. Many Republican Party leaders, especially at the local level, are convinced of it.

In addition, while Trump is behind in critical states, he is close to or within the margin of error in many of them. And that’s after a historically awful year, said Jeff Roe, the Republican strategist who steered Ted Cruz’s 2016 presidential campaign.

For Trump, he said “The paths aren’t closed.”It is possible that the race is already cooked. To this point, nothing has changed the basic equation- and that includes a pandemic, a disastrous first debate and Trump’s hospitalization for coronavirus infection. Ken Martin, chair of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party said one reason he is confident “is just how steady the race has been.”

Still, the election four years ago shifted significantly in the final weeks. Acknowledging “a bit of PTSD from 2016,” Martin said, “You never know what type of issue could move the electorates” in the final days.

For Democrats, there is no political price to pay for projecting caution, which can help to avert complacency among donors and potential voters. Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign manager, wrote in a memo to supporters recently that “the reality is that this race is far closer than some of the punditry we’re seeing on Twitter and on TV would suggest. In the key battleground states where this election will be decided, we remain neck and neck with Donald Trump.”

What is different about 2020 is that in any other presidential election it might not feel that way.

Looking at the polling alone, said Bonier, of TargetSmart, “you’d feel very confident, very confident. … You would just be thinking of the extent of the landslide.”

This year, Bonier said, he would “rather be us than them.” But his outlook was as wary as that of many other Democrats.

“It’s just that nagging question of uncertainty,” he said. However, notwithstanding all the permutations, given the Trump last minute ‘magic’, AljazirahNigeria Octopus gives Trump the day.

As the conversation on who takes the mantle of leadership from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 gathers momentum, reports reveal that at least three ministers currently serving in Buhari’s cabinet have an eye for the presidency. Meanwhile, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, an Igbo group has shortlisted ten people who can wrestle for 2023 presidency from the South-east extraction. The coalition leaders said it has set up an Igbo Presidential Actualisation Committee, IPAC, which came out with names of a number of prominent sons and daughters of the geo-political zone who can vie for the presidency after Buhari’s tenure. Coincidentally, the Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, one of the ministers who have been reported to have an eye on the presidency made the list.

For instance, in the month of September, it was reported that the National Association for Promoting Democracy and Good Governance, Northern Nigeria Youth Front and Northwest Women for Better Nigeria are wooing the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, to vie for the 2023 presidency on the platform of the ruling APC.

The groups, through their spokesman, Alhaji Shuaibu Mustapha Kano, described the minister as the best man who has the capacity to salvage the country’s ailing economy from the woods.

Kano, who is a one-time Special Adviser on Political Matters to a former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, stressed the need for presidency of an Igbo stock in the next presidential election so as to give them a sense of belonging in the Nigerian project. He urged Dr Onu to answer the clarion call to serve Nigeria for better and prosperity.

Also, the Millennium Centre for Training and Leadership, MCTL, a non-political intellectual think-tank, has added its own voice to the growing calls for the presidency to be zoned to the South-east geopolitical zone. Specifically, the Organisation is putting forward Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, and two others as strong candidates to vie for the presidential ticket, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC and the PDP during the election.

A coalition of Igbo groups and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, on Sunday, named Dr Ogbonnaya Onu among others as the best presidential candidates from the South-east.

Even though the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has cautioned the South-east against the campaign for Igbo presidency, many believe he is one of those from the zone with eyes on the presidency. He had served as House of Representatives

committee chairman on Land, Housing and works from 1999 to 2003 before contesting for Imo governorship on the platform of APP in 2003, 2007 and as CPC candidate in 2011.He was Secretary of the Constitution Drafting Committee that produced the Constitution of the merger committee to form the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2013.

Nwajiuba contested the Imo State governorship election in 2003, challenging the then incumbent governor, Chief Achike Udenwa of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has been President Muhammadu Buhari’s most trusted ally from the time of APP till date. He coordinated the political pressure group that bought the 2019 All Progressive Congress, APC, Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest Forms for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nwajiuba, who remains a core APC member, won election into the House of Representatives to represent Okigwe North Constituency under the ticket of the Accord Party in the 2019 poll. Before the 2019 general election, Nwajiuba was chairman of TETFUND. After

winning the election into the House of Representatives, he was nominated by the president as a minister and assigned to the Ministry of Education. At the outbreak of this Pandemic, he was appointed into the COVID 19 presidential committee headed by the SGF.

His supporters believe if he throws his heart into the 2023 presidential election contest, he will pull surprises as he is youthful and experienced.

The third of President Buhari’s ministers eying the presidency in 2023 is Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Buhari’s Minister of Transportation since 2015. A coalition of Igbo groups and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has also named Rotimi Amaechi and Dr Ogbonnaya Onu as among the best presidential candidates from the old eastern states.

Although his people, the Ikwerre, have repeatedly said they were not Igbos, Amaechi whose aide, Dr Israel Ibeleme has come out to claim to be Igbo, a move critical watchers have described as “deceitful” as he wants to position himself for the presidency come 2023 which there have been clamours that it should go to the Igbos. HE Chibuikem Amaechi had during the 2015,2019 APC presidential campaigns in Owerri, Enugu claimed that he is an Igbo even though he is from Rivers State.

On Nairaland, a user, IkwerrePikin wrote on Jun 24: “Amaechi whom Buhari loves so much (appointed & reappointed him minister of one of the biggest ministry despite oppositions from senate and co), Buhari’s loves and trust for Amaechi is more than any politician in the South. Amaechi who wants to be President and knows people are clamoring for Igbo presidency for equity and fairness has come out to declare himself as an Igbo man ahead of 2023 even though some of the Ikwere people have always insisted that they are not Igbo for decades now. A recent visit to Port Harcourt by the Oba of Benin,

also confirmed their stand as the Oba said his visit to Port Harcourt was to unite the Benin descendants in Rivers State quoting the Ikwerre people as one of them.

“With the clamor for power to return to the South for fairness, If APC gives Rotimi Amaechi the presidential ticket, as an Ikwerre man from Rivers state with the second highest number of voting strength in the South after Lagos) he will win Rivers for APC, the entire South-south, plus all the South-east who see him as an Igbo man closer to them than anyone in Nigeria incase a South-east person is not chosen, and don’t forget his wife is an Igbo woman from Imo State, and with the APC structure in the South-west, there would be a more united South to support APC more than a Tinubu candidacy whom the South -south and South-east do not give 100% support.

However, Prof. Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State may be considered a suitable deputy from the North-east as we all know that his zone in the North supported the ruling APC and has not tested presidency. Also his performance thus far, going by the activities of Boko Haram terrorists which never deterred him from performing very well.

In the meantime, Amaechi’s 2023 ambition seems to be garnering the most ‘stories’ as there have been insinuations that he would run with Nasir el’Rufai, and Mohammed Babagana Monguno.

Many Nigerians believe the presidency should be zoned to the South as some prominent Nigerians have said the South should produce the next President. Some who have drummed support for this call include a chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano State, Brig-General Idris Dambazzau, retd; elder statesmen, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, Chief Edwin Clark, and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Others are Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, former deputy national chairman of the PDP Chief Bode George, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Chief Supo Shonibare, and Senator Femi Okorounmu and the national chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, retd.

Yakassai while noting that though zoning of presidential candidates to any region was at the discretion of political parties, he added the south should be given the opportunity to produce the next president, he said: “The APC produced Buhari for second term and by the end of the term, he has completed eight years. So it is ideal for the party to respect and stick to the zoning arrangement on ground and look for a presidential candidate from the South.” Pa Adebanjo on his part explained that the topic is not debatable as the South should have a shot at the presidency, adding that the question should be where in the South.

So, Nigerians await to see where the pendulum swings in 2023.

Even though the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has cautioned the South-east against the campaign for Igbo presidency, many believe he is one of those from the zone with eyes on the presidency.

The much awaited speech by President Muhammadu Buhari on the #ENDSARS protests across the country, which he gave at 7: pm on Thursday, October 22, has elicited widespread reactions from Nigerians. Nigeria has been rocked by #EndSARS protests carried out by youths protesting police brutality, with calls for President Buhari to address the nation in a live broadcast. But when it came, many have rightly written off the speech as “lacking in any sense of responsibility and leadership.” While Nigerians and indeed the world, was waiting for him to address the killing of protesters by both the army and the police, the President never mentioned the massacre which got the whole world talking.

In his speech, the president stated that Nigerians “misconstrued” the “promptness” with which the government acted on the End SARS demands “as a sign of weakness,” adding that “human lives have been lost” and properties have been destroyed “in the name of the EndSARS protests.” He then listed the “measures and initiatives” the government has put in place for “youths, women and the most vulnerable groups in our society,” calling on youths “to discontinue the street protests.”

Speaking to AljazirahNigeria, one pharmacist cum activist said: “Buhari’s speech was most annoying, he was just chasing shadows, and the present issues happening in Nigeria were not even mentioned. You are not even talking about the incident where peaceful protesters were shot; this is the area he should have addressed. He is not even talking of compensation to the families of the deceased, at least anything that could ease the tension.”

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Nigerian lawyer, actor and musician, Folarin Falana aka Falz has said he is not afraid to die for Nigeria. According to him, Buhari’s promise to reform the police was infuriating and frustrating as his administration had been making the same promise of reform since 2017.

In the clip, Buhari said SARS was scrapped in response to the #EndSARS campaigners’ demands and extensive police reforms were underway. When Amanpour then asked him how much stock he puts in Buhari’s pledges, Falz, who had been shaking his head cynically as the clip played, said: “It’s infuriating, annoying and frustrating. And I think that’s how everyone is feeling right now. They have been reforming the police for a long time and we have never seen actual action. They announced that SARS had been disbanded in 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2020. They just think we are stupid.”

When Amanpour asked him if he wasn’t scared, as many young people refused to appear on camera, Falz said he was not afraid for his life, as the Nigerian situation has made death a commonplace occurrence.

Falz told Amanpour: “I am not afraid for my life because where we are right now, I feel like I can easily die by anything else anyway. We have a non-existent healthcare system, for example. We have a seriously high level of poverty; there is unemployment. We are in a critical state because of the level of corruption and mismanagement of funds that we continue to see on a daily basis.

“I can have an accident on my way to work and die because the state of healthcare is nothing to write home about. People have to travel abroad to have proper healthcare. We keep on saying that every single Nigerian is one sickness away from passing away. So what kind of life am I living anyway? Why should I be afraid of dying? I am going to die anyway, so what is the point?” Falz asked Amanpour rhetorically.

Afterwards, he annoyingly aggravated the issue. “We do not have leadership in Nigeria and this is very unfortunate. The future of the Nigerian youths is embedded in the palms of corrupt and selfish leaders who are only interested in their bellies.

“In my opinion, the youths have actually made their mark, they have made their point, and the best thing is for them to shield their sword, let’s keep our faiths high for a better Nigeria.”

More concerns were also registered on the social media which has gone awash with reactions to his speech. Renowned activist, Aisha Yesufu expressed her disappointment on Twitter. “Not a word from Buhari @MBuhari about #EndSars protesters killed. Not a word about citizens killed in Zamfara. You still have doubt that this man cares for no one and everyone is feeling the effect of his incompetence”, she said.

“He didn’t even acknowledge them. Wow”, Music star Simi wrote in reference to the deceased. For Bulama Bukarti, it was, “Buhari didn’t have a word for the victims of the recent killings in Zamfara and across the north. That tells you how much he values those peddling disinformation to defend the indefensible,’ while Dipo Awojide tweeted: “No empathy. No hope. No apology. No accountability.”

Former governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose tweeted: “Mr President has never disappointed me. Nothing else can be lifeless than the President’s Speech. Those who brought this CHANGE should enjoy the NEXT/NEW LEVEL while it lasts.

Senator Shehu Sani tweeted: “You ask for a speech, you got the speech and now you are speechless. For Comrade Deji Adeyanju, “After Buhari’s speech, the soldiers that extra-

judicially killed protesters in Lekki may even get promotions. #EndSARS.

Ayo Sogunro - #Transformist tweeted: “Summary of Buhari’s speech: “Do you know who I am?” He basically complimented himself for listening to initial #EndSARS demands, then complimented himself for not being even more brutal, while complimenting himself for giving out money. #RevolutionNow After listening to the rubbish from @Buhari tonight, there is an even dire problem, the absence of men of conscience around power, up till today, that you couldn’t find anyone in the regime willing to forgo the trappings of power to stand with the people is scary!

-- Omoyele Sowore (@YeleSowore) October 22, 2020

I am disappointed by Prez @MBuhari ‘s recorded speech to the country today. He failed to acknowledge the #Lekkitollgate killings. I didn’t see a concrete response to the CULTURE of impunity and police brutality, or to governance reforms other than a regurgitation of “programs”.

As the issue continued to draw concern across the nation, the President had a virtual meeting with former Heads of State who were said to have endorsed the speech by the President even as some have doubted the validity of the position put to the public domain by the Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina .

He said that contrary to concerns in some quarters that the president’s speech was belated and his actions so far unworthy and lacking in character, he cited the overwhelming response the president got from the former leaders.

Further, he said his principal was applauded by the ex-leaders who see the President as being proactive since the #EndSARS protest erupted in the country.

It was reported that all living heads of state were present at the virtual meeting which lasted for a few hours.

Falz told Amanpour: “I am not afraid for my life because where we are right now, I feel like I can easily die by anything else anyway. We have a non-existent healthcare system, for example.

For over two weeks, Nigerians have seen protests like never before. Without taking sides with either part of the standoff, emotions, euphoria and sometimes unfounded principles seem to have become the order of the day, as logic, accountability and common sense are on vacation as they often are in such matters.

If there should be negotiations, parties involved may likely disagree on a couple of things ranging from the sincerity of the other party, approach to a peaceful resolution, what amounts to a peaceful resolution and how to forge ahead.

There would be accusations and counter-accusations, more so, as the chasm of discord between stakeholders continues to widen with each passing day of the #ENDSARS protest across major cities and towns of the Country. Nonetheless, one thing both parties would agree on is that their continued standoff and reluctance to resolve the complex issues around the protest is injurious to the economy.

Nigeria’s real GDP growth for 2019 was estimated at 2.3% by the AfDB. It was an improvement on the 1.9% estimate for 2018 and an achievement of the 2019 expert projections despite the uncertainty about the 2019 election outcomes, policy implementation slowdown and sell-offs by foreign investors in 2018.

Household consumption was the key growth driver in 2019, followed closely by growth in transport, the oil sector and information and communications technology. Agriculture, for all its Government patronage could not withstand the floods that heralded a climate change while suffering from the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers- it flopped, and so did manufacturing which could not be reckoned with due to a lack of financing. Estimated inflation for 2019 was 11.3%.

After a turnaround from 1.6% in 2016 to 0.8% in 2017, 2020 was supposed to be the year where Nigeria consolidated on the

steady GDP growth of previous years by implementing its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan with an emphasis on economic diversification.

The CBN’s proactive decree that banks hold loan–deposit ratios of 60% was geared to increasing lending to the real sector, even as they eased the risks of lending to small businesses.

An increase in the value-added tax from 5% to 7.5% was implemented to shore up domestic non-oil revenues, and agro-industrial support from the Government was supposed to make 2020 a year to surpass growth forecasts even as oil revenues began to improve and drive foreign exchange reserves then COVID-19.

Lacking a clear nationwide pandemic framework, coupled with a nonexistent welfare system and weak healthcare infrastructure, the Nation did a relatively impressive job in managing the pandemic but did lose the economic advantage it started the year with. Negative GDP growths were projected for Q2 and Q3 even as oil prices slumped to an all-time low.

Diaspora remittances (which accounted for 83% of the FG budget in 2018) had reduced to a trickle because of the pandemic, and unemployment surges. The World Bank

predicted a recession by Q4, it would be Nigeria’s worst in four decades.

Once again, Nigeria beat the odds. A series of monetary and fiscal policies saw to it that more funds were made available to the real sector; delinquent loans were restructured to keep from becoming bad; the free fall of the Naira was staved off and key industries were supported through Government’s special intervention programs. A few optimists were beginning to think we had rounded the corner, and then came #ENDSARS protests.

In the few days since the protests began, the Nation is estimated to have lost billions of naira with Lagos state, understandably, being the biggest loser so far hosting the largest protests. Manpower hours have been lost, properties have been destroyed and the worst of all lives have been lost.

Household spending, transportation and manufacturing cannot continue to thrive in these unrests. September inflation was pegged at 13.7%, its highest since February 2018 there is already considerable strain on healthcare due to the pandemic and the exposure of the populace during the #ENDSARS protests and counter-protests could spike up the COVID-19 numbers once again.

The peculiarity of the nature of the protest has seen Nigerians in the Diaspora channel their funds to supporting the protests in Nigeria while organizing theirs in their host country - another significant loss of diaspora remittances which represent a substantial percentage of the GDP. Also, the protests are beginning to weigh in on stock market activities and could affect other economic indices if tensions escalate further.

The unfortunate resolve of both sides to fight to the finish without giving room for dialogue could lead to another lockdown of economic activities as witnessed in Edo, where a 24hr curfew has been declared; Lagos where schools and businesses have shut down; Osun, Ekiti, Plateau, Imo and the FCT where business activities have come

to a grinding halt. The cyber warfare being threatened by

both sides could also have far-reaching effects on the liquidity of our financial institutions as their customers opt for crypto wallets as safe haven for their funds and as punitive measures for brands they perceive as not being supportive towards their cause.

Of course, decisions taken in the next few days will determine how soon the issues surrounding the protests will be resolved, but for a country on the precipice of serious economic repercussions, both parties seem a little too comfortable in staring down the opposition when serious gains could be made by coming to a round table.

Over the past twelve days, economic activities have been crippled in most parts of the country and have been particularly profound in the urban areas.

The Nigerian economy has suffered an estimated seven hundred billion naira (N700 billion) loss in the past twelve days.” She asserted that the protest has been impactful and profound, adding that it has achieved some significant outcomes by reawakening the need to reform the shortcomings in the nation’s political governance.

To protect the livelihoods of Nigerians, including the business community, the protesters need to progress to the next stage of civic engagement, which is dialogue.

This is necessary to reduce the massive disruptions, blockades and barricades around our major cities and interstate highways. These actions have been at great cost to the economy and the welfare of Nigerian citizens.

It should be noted that the economy is still reeling from the shocks of the COVID-19 Pandemic and struggling to recover from its devastating effects.

President Muhammadu Buhari should urgently grant the audience to the leadership of the protest to deliberate on the way forward and to agree on an action plan for the delivery of agreed outcomes.

“That the government should commit to rapid improvement in governance quality and accountability by effecting necessary institutional, policy and regulatory reforms not only for the police but the entire public sector ecosystem.

“The leadership of the protest should occupy the seats provided to participate in the reforms to be implemented by the government in response to their demands.

Analyzing Economic Prospects Of Another Lockdown

Household consumption was the key growth driver in 2019, followed closely by growth in transport, the oil sector and information and communications technology.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) said it has received information alleging crimes in Nigeria following the violent dimensions that the #EndSARS protests have taken across the country.

Fatou Bensouda, ICC prosecutor, made this known in a statement posted on the court’s Twitter handle Thursday, October 22.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) was reacting to the reported shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, by soldiers.

The shooting has attracted global outrage against the Nigerian authorities. The number of deaths from the incident is yet to be ascertained.

“My office has been closely following the events around the current protests in Nigeria and the reaction of Nigeria’s law enforcement and security agencies,” said, the ICC prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda.

“Any loss of life or injury is concerning. We have received information alleging crimes and are keeping a close eye on developments, in case violence escalates and any indications arise on that Rome Statute crimes may have been committed,” she added, while calling for restraint.

As the ongoing protests against police brutality and bad governance escalate into more violence across Nigeria, those responsible for violating human rights must be brought to book, the EU has said in its reactions

AljazirahNigeria has been reporting how the EndSARS demonstrators are taking to the streets to protest against police brutality in Nigeria after a viral video emerged on social media showing a man being beaten allegedly by officers from the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit.

The protests, which began peacefully, escalated claiming several lives.

But many world leaders and celebrities including Hilary Clinton, Joe Biden, Rihanna and Beyonce have criticized the current crackdown by security operatives on protesters.

EU calls for JUsticEThe EU said in a statement that “It is crucial that those responsible of abuses be brought to justice and held accountable.”

It said as the Nigerian government expressed the will to deliver on reforms, “we expect to see decisive implementation.”

aljazirahNigeria can authoritatively confirm that Over 170,000 people have signed a petition for the UK government to implement sanctions against the Nigerian government and officials for violating human rights during the demonstrations.

Protesters have five core demands which include the scrapping of SARS, justice for the families of victims of police brutality, retraining of SARS officers before being redeployed to other police units, and an independent body to oversee investigations into police brutality.

Although the Nigerian government met some of the demands of the protesters, but the protests have continued.

Meanwhile the pressure on United States, EU and the United Kingdom to impose arms embargo on Nigeria, aljazirahNigeria gathered has trigger some fresh fear that the war against insurgency in the North-east might assume a worrisome dimension.

Indeed, following the reported cases of human rights abuses by the federal government of Nigeria during the former President Goodluck Jonathan, the US and other world powers had declined selling arms to Nigeria until November 2018 when the Donald Trump administration after a diplomatic shuttle to the US approved the contract for the manufacturing of 12 A 29 Super Tucano Combat aircraft for the Nigeria Air Force.

The contract was awarded to Sierra Nevada Corporation, an American aerospace contractor, for an initial sum of $329 million. A clause, described as “undefinitised contract action (UCA)”, was, however, added that the contract sum could be varied, but not exceeding $344.7 million.

A defence contracting explainer said the UCA involves contracts whose terms, specifications, or price are not agreed upon before work commences.

This could be because the negotiation of a definitive contract action is not possible in sufficient time to meet the government’s requirements or a government’s interest demands that the contractor be given a binding commitment so that contract performance can begin immediately, and shall be as complete and definite as practicable under the particular circumstances.

Six of the aircraft would be equipped with Forward Looking Infrared System, a technology that senses radiation which is then converted to video output.

As part of the contract for the 12 Super Tucano combat jetliners, the Nigerian Air Force would receive ground training devices, mission planning systems, mission debrief systems, spares, ground support equipment and alternate mission equipment, the U.S. defence department said.

There would also be a contiguous U.S. interim contractor support, outside of continental U.S. (OCONUS) contractor logistic support, and five field service representatives for OCONUS support for three years, the U.S. Defence Department said.

President Muhammadu Buhari placed order for the aircraft, following extensive discussions with the U.S. government that led to the relaxing of a moratorium placed on military equipment sales to Nigeria.

Mr Buhari said the procurement would help strengthen Nigeria’s national security, as well as timely end to the Boko Haram war.

The Nigerian government transferred $469.4 million to the U.S. government in April, according to a letter he wrote to the National Assembly.

It was not immediately clear whether the Nigerian government was aware the project would not be delivered until 2024, six years away, but went ahead with the narrative that it would come by 2020, anyway.

Also it was unclear why the contract was being awarded for $344 million (N125.3 billion) when Mr Buhari said he transferred over $469 million (N168.8 billion) to the U.S. for the aircraft.

That leaves a difference of N43.5 billion yet unaccounted for.

The embattled A former governor of Lagos State and a national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, had advised the federal government to fish out whoever who gave the directive for the shooting of the protesters (for the shooting) and put them on trial”.

However, on the current crises across the nation, Mr Tinubu, who described himself as an “unapologetic protester”, appealed for calm. He said he was ready to “face all inquiries” over the incident because of the allegations against him.

“We have lost our sleep, we have lost our peace of mind, (and) we just have to deal with it,” Mr Tinubu added.

President Buhari in a nationwide broadcast over the weekend however, was silent on the fate of the Soldiers who invaded the Lekki Toll plaza where scores of protesters were killed.

Despite mounting evidence, the army had equally denied their involvement in the shooting.

Apart from the pressure on the international Communities to revisit the arms embargo and military training in Nigeria, the International Court of Justice has waded into the orgy of violent killing in the last three weeks in Nigeria, an indication that those responsible would be brought to book

According to Bensouda, a prosecutor with the ICC, the ICC is keeping an eye on the developments in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

She called on all Nigerians to remain calm and urged them to exercise restraint.

Senior officials of the United States Government on Thursday met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and expressed displeasure over the shooting of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll plaza.

The US also demanded that the soldiers behind the shootings be brought to book.

The Spokesperson for the State Department, Morgan Ortagus, said in a statement that the officials were led by Counselor of the US State Department, Ulrich Brechbühl.

Others at the meeting include: Assistant Secretary Robert Destro and Assistant Secretary Denise Natali.

The officials, according to the statement, raised concerns over the ongoing violence in Nigeria as well as human rights violations and human trafficking.

The statement read in part, “Counselor T. Ulrich Brechbühl met with Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last week in Abuja, Nigeria as part of a previously scheduled delegation, which included Assistant Secretary Robert Destro and Assistant Secretary Denise Natali, to raise US concerns about ongoing violence in Nigeria, human rights, religious freedom, and trafficking in persons, and to hear from senior Nigerian government officials how they are addressing those issues.

“The counselor expressed the US condemnation of the use of excessive force by military forces that fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos. He expressed condolences to the victims of these shootings and urged the government of Nigeria to abide by its commitment to hold those responsible accountable under the law.”

According to the statement, Osinbajo as well as the counselor noted that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are essential human rights and core democratic principles.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had, on Wednesday, October 21 said it sent a petition to Bensouda, urging her to “promptly investigate reports that Nigerian authorities, military, and some politicians have used/ and are using thugs, soldiers and security agents to intimidate, harass, attack and kill #EndSARS peaceful protesters in several parts of Nigeria, including Abuja, Lagos, Edo, Osun, Plateau, and Kano states”.

The civil society organisation in its petition urged Bensouda to “push for those suspected to be responsible for these crimes, mostly security officials, soldiers, some politicians and other actors who directly or indirectly have individually and/or collectively contributed to the attacks, deaths and injuries, and are therefore complicit in the crimes, to be tried by the ICC”.

The United States has enjoined the federal government to hold those responsible for Lekki shooting accountable and also condemned the use of excessive force by the military authorities against unarmed demonstrators.

The Nigerian Army says it is commencing Exercise Crocodile Smile VI from Oct. 20 to Dec. 31, as part of its effort to enhance safety and security of the country towards the end of the year.

The Chief of Training and Operations, Army, Maj.-Gen. Nuhu Angbazo, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at Army Special Super Camp, Ngamdu, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno.

Angbazo said the exercise was traditionally scheduled in the last quarter of every year to checkmate all forms of crimes and criminality as the end of the year approaches.

He explained that this year’s exercise was intended to be more all encompassing to include cyber warfare exercises designed to identify, track and counter negative propaganda in the social media and across the cyber space.

According to him, it would also include a positive identification component to identify Boko Haram terrorist elements fleeing from the North East to other parts of the country as a result of ongoing operations, as well as other criminal elements in other parts of the country.

“The exercise is also planned to include the conduct of cyber security awareness seminars to detect and neutralise malicious posts, fake news,

Nigerian Army Pledges Enhanced Civil Military Cooperation

The Nigerian Army has said the newly-launched Exercise Crocodile Smile VI has nothing to do with the ongoing ENDSARS protests across the country.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, indicated this in a statement in Abuja.

Musa emphasized that the exercise is a yearly event set out to train officers and men in its efforts to ensure safety and security of Nigeria and its citizens.

“It is a yearly exercise in the Army Calendar/Forecast of Events which traditionally holds from October to December of each year.

According to Musa, this year’s exercise is scheduled to commence from Oct. 20 to Dec. 31, and it has no relationship with any lawful protest under any guise whatsoever.

He warned “to now insinuate that it is an exercise meant to stifle the ongoing ENDSARS protest is sheer misinformation.

“So far, the army has acted professionally since the civil protest started over two weeks ago.

“The army hereby enjoins all law-abiding Nigerians to go about their lawful activities unhindered,” he said.

illegal recruitment scam and internet hackers.

“Besides major deliverables like the equipment of public safety and security and the end of the year festivities, the exercise will equally improve Nigerian army’s capacity and resilience against hostile cyber acts in defence of our national security and critical national infrastructure.

“Exercise Crocodile Smile 6 will also have a civil-military cooperation component which includes sanitation exercises, medical outreaches, road maintenance palliatives, aid and

succour to the aged and disabled members of our society and importantly, humanitarian assistance to the widows of our fallen heroes,” he said.

Angbazo said that the Nigerian army had over the years, conducted different exercises and operations in support of civil authorities as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

According to him, these exercises and operations have over the years proven to be helpful in stabilizing and

Soldiers from 33 Artillery Brigade, Nigeria Army, Bauchi, have recovered 75 cows, 45 sheep, 15 goats and 4 donkeys from cattle rustlers and kidnappers in Alkaleri LGA of Bauchi State.

The Platoon Commander in charge of the area, Capt. Aminu Maikafi, disclosed this in Alkaleri while handing over the animals to the Bauchi State Government.

Maikafi said that the animals were recovered on Sept. 25 following a joint operation carried out by the soldiers of the brigade and other sisters’ security agencies in the area.

He said the security agencies had

received information on kidnapping of one Alhaji Usman Adamu of Tudun Sulubawa in Alkaleri, where one Abdullahi Adamu was arrested in connection with the case.

“The security personnel secured the release of the victims while 11 suspected kidnappers and rustlers who were armed with dangerious weapons, ran into nearby bushes.

“The operatives trailed the rustlers to various locations but on sighting the security agents, the rustlers abandoned the animals and escaped into a nearby forest.

“The animals were recovered and kept in the custody of the

Sarkin Tike of Alkaleri, Danjuma Mohammed, for onward transfer to the owners,” he added.

The platoon commander said the operatives were still combing the areas to arrest the rustlers.

He advised local communities to assist the army and other security agencies with useful information that could lead to the arrest of criminals and cattle rustlers.

While receiving the items, Gen. Markus Yake (rtd), Special Adviser on Security to Gov. Bala Muhammed, commended the security agencies operating in the area for their efforts.

improving national security as well as safeguarding lives and properties of Nigerians together with the security of our critical national infrastructure.

“In keeping with its constitutional mandate therefore, the Nigerian army has conducted several exercises this year and it is still conducting some as we speak.

“Whereas exercises Harbin Kunama 4 and Crocodile Smile 5 have been successfully concluded, Exercises Atilogwu Udo 2, Ayem Akpatuma 3 amongst others are still ongoing.

NEOM: Saudi Arabia was ranked first in the Arab world for issuing scientific papers on the coronavirus, the government heard on Tuesday.

King Salman chaired a virtual session of the cabinet which reviewed various aspects related to the fight against the spread of the virus.

The Kingdom ranked 25th globally and 2nd in the Middle East for clinical research and studies on the virus, the cabinet was told.

The Kingdom reported 385 cases of COVID-19 on Monday and 16 deaths. A total of 5,217 people have died in Saudi Arabia of the disease.

The ministers were also updated on the progress of the second phase of the gradual easing of restrictions for umrah pilgrimages and prayers within Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah (the area between Prophet Muhammad’s grave and his pulpit) for citizens and expatriates from inside the Kingdom.

The phase will allow up to 15,000 Umrah performers and 40,000 worshipers or about 75 percent of the capacity in consideration of health protocols to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus.

The first phase had allowed those within the Kingdom to perform Umrah at a capacity of 30 percent

The ministers also addressed the final communique of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Banks Governors Meeting which reaffirmed determination to continue to use all available policy tools to aid with the recovery from the pandemic.

Separately, the cabinet welcomed the king’s restructuring on Sunday of the Council of Senior Scholars, Shoura Council and Supreme Court.

The decrees appointed 20 people to the Council of Senior Scholars, the Kingdom’s highest religious body.

The cabinet also reviewed the

The meeting focused on strategic issues, including combating extremism and terrorism, and confronting Iran’s destabilizing and threatening attitude in the Middle East and disrupting global trade, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Crown Prince Calls For Global Collaboration To Unlock Benefits Of AI For AllRIYADH: As the world faces unprecedented challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year offers the perfect opportunity to test the potential of artificial intelligence, according to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In a speech on Wednesday on the opening day of the two-day Global AI Summit hosted by Riyadh — which was delivered on his behalf by Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, president of Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence — the crown prince also called for the nations of the world to work together to develop the capabilities of AI so that its benefits are available to all.

He began by highlighting the Kingdom’s desire to play a

prominent part in the global development of AI to “unleash its potential for the good of all humanity.”

He said: “2020, undoubtedly, has been an extraordinary year to test the potential of AI, as we witness the formation of a new global normal that is redefining our ways of life, working and learning.

“This requires all of us to think and work hard to take advantage of artificial intelligence and unleash its full potential to advance our societies and economies.”

In recognition of the importance of the technology, the crown prince announced the launch of a national strategy for data and AI, with the aim

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia’s national car-rier Saudia announced it will resume flights to 33 destinations in Novem-ber.

Destinations include major inter-national capitals across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Regional destinations that in-clude Dubai and Beirut will also re-sume next month.

Saudia travellers who are going to the US will only be able to fly to Washington.

The airlines said flights will only be available to passengers who are permitted to travel un-der Saudi Arabia’s coronavirus safety measures.

The airline resumed inter-national flights to 20 destina-tions after months of travel disruption caused by the coro-navirus pandemic, when au-thorities partially lifted the sus-pension of international flights on Sept. 15.

“I hereby invite all dreamers, innovators, investors and thinkers to join us, here in the Kingdom, to achieve our ambitions together and to build a pioneering model; to unlock the value of data and AI in order to build knowledge-based economies and advance our present and future generations,” he added.

Acknowledging the digital gap that exists between developed and developing countries, which has widened as a result of the coronavirus crisis, the crown prince said that the Kingdom is working to close this gap so that all nations can benefit from the potential of AI.

Nigerians Groan Over Unstable PMS Pump Price, Advocate Downward ReviewBy Henry IBya, Makurdi

Chairman, Federal Mass Transit Driver’s Association Of Nigeria, Alhaji Adamu Ali, has lauded the Federal Government decision to reopen the economy for normal business activities but observed that increasing the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), at this critical period of hardship when Nigerians are yet to recover from challenges brought by Covid-19,is not the best option.

The chairman who spoke through the Secretary General of the Association, comrade Teryila Agaigbe, in an exclusive interview with AljazirahNigeria, Monday in Makurdi, while reacting to the much advertised benefits of deregulation and removal of fuel subsidy, faulted president Muhammadu Buhari’s recent defense on the increase that Nigeria could not sale lower than other countries such as Ghana, Niger, Chad and Saudi Arabia selling betweenN364.00,N360.00 and N300.00, arguing that conditions of living in those countries and their government policies were not the same with those of Nigeria.

According to the labour activist, all Nigerians know is that, Government was giving contract to companies to lift crude and it was left for the Federal Government to monitor contractor’s to ensure they deliver on their mandate, “if that was not done, to an average Nigerian, that was the failure on the part of the government.

Whatever the Federal Government can say as reasons for deregulation and the removal of fuel subsidy, to an average Nigerian whether a few people were benefiting as claimed by Government, removal of subsidy is not the best decision to the poor man in the sense that the pump price increase has made life generally unbearable, “he pointed out.

Comrade Ali, argued that the cost of transportation during the subsidy was more affordable, people could travel at affordable rates to buy and transport food items from village market’s to town’s easily maintaining that though transporters we’re not willing to increase transport fair on sympathy grounds considering the hardship faced by the average poor who the cost is shifted to in the form

of increased prices of good’s in the market, transporters were operating at a lost.

The chairman who said the much advertised subsidy removal by the Federal Government and it’s acclaimed benefits were not yet noticed by Nigerian masses in comparison recalled that benefits of petroleum subsidy were mostly felt through the then Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF),a program designed by the then military Government which was headed by our present president

Muhammadu Buhari, whose impact was felt in the area of renovation of hospitals with drug equipment’s, rehabilitation of roads, schools etc, and challenged those behind the subsidy removal to prove its benefits to Nigerians.

The chairman who restated the Association’s call for a downward review of the premium motor spirit (PMS), to N70.00 per liter also appealed to the Federal Government to take a second look at the issue of subsidy removal pointing out that the policy has already affected the price of goods and services including food items, a development that has caused untold hardship to many families who can no longer afford the cost of food and are dying in silence.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action by decentralizing the conversion process of vehicles to both the usage of PMS and Gasoline to other major towns across the country to decongest Abuja, so as to fast track the process to reduce the suffering that people will go through if the concentration is in one place.

The Federal Government has called for collaboration of West African leaders in monitoring and halting illegal trans-border trade of solid minerals within the Sub-region.

Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, the Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, stated this in a statement issued by Mr. Tine Iulun, the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, in Abuja.

Ogah, speaking at the opening ceremony of Ouaga Dore, Gold West Africa event in Burkina Faso, said the collaboration became imperative to curb illegal exploitation and transaction of minerals in the sub-region.

“For the sub-region to properly harness the economic benefits of its abundant mineral resources, efforts must be made to curb illegal exploitation and transaction of minerals,” he said.

He emphasised the need for sustainable peace and security in the sub-region to enable it leverage and harness the gold value chain for industrialisation, wealth and job creation for the youths.

The Minister applauded the Burkinabe government for putting in place the right policies, which had increased its investment in the mining sector.

He said that the policy had also led to the development of the country’s artisanal and small-scale gold production, as attested by the event.

“The country has made a quantum leap in the development of its artisanal and small-scale gold production and today’s presentation of refined gold bar medallions speaks volume to the international investors.

“The Gold festival which featured the presentation of Gold bars, sourced mainly from artisanal operators in the country, has a significant bold step in developing the gold and mining value chain and deepening integration across the West African economic corridor.”

He appreciated the valuable contribution of Burkina Faso’s mining partners, like Messrs. Kian Smith, for their efforts leading to the remarkable milestone recorded by the country.

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment have assured that it will work with relevant arms of government to ensure adequate funding of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) for its effective management.

Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, gave the assurance in Abuja while declaring open the physical and virtual 14th National Biennial SIWES Conference, organised by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

SIWES was initiated in 1974 among other objectives to expose and provide students of Engineering, Technical and allied disciplines with practical experience of real work situations they are likely to find on graduation.

The scheme which is being implemented by ITF emerged in response to growing concerns among employers of labour to equip graduates of tertiary institutions with adequate practical knowledge to boost the nation’s manpower.

Adebayo, represented by Mr. Simon Alabi, Director, Human Resources of the ministry, said the scheme needed adequate

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has decried the loss of some of their petrol tankers following repeated attacks on their trucks by hoodlums exploiting the #EndSARS protesters.

It was gathered that angry protesters again attacked three petrol laden trucks and burnt the oil tankers on Thursday in Warri, Delta State.

This came as the Board of Trustees of the Oil and Solid Mineral Producing Area Landlords Association of Nigerian urged protesters across the country to sheathe their swords as the destruction of oil assets and others had become alarming.

The Public Relations Officer, IPMAN, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, told our correspondent in Abuja that three petrol tankers with products belonging to oil marketers were set on fire on Thursday.

He said, “The protesters

The International Monetary Fund has said it may review Nigeria’s growth projection if the ongoing protests in the country persist, in view of the impact of the economy.

Director, African Department, International Monetary Fund, Abebe Selassie, said this while responding to questions during the virtual IMF press conference on the regional economic outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa on Thursday.

He described Nigeria’s protest as one of the difficult ones that generated concerns for the IMF.

Selassie said, “On the growth projections in Nigeria, I mean, these protests happened of course, after we had closed, after the period where the data we looked at in making the growth projections for this economic outlook.

“And much will depend really on how these protests evolve.

“Lagos of course, is a very important economic hub and contributes quite a bit of economic activity to overall Nigeria activities.

“So, if these persist and are showing significant effects on economic data, we will internalise them in due course.”

While saying that the protest was a difficult one to comment on, he said economic conditions in Nigeria for the last four years had been very difficult in the wake of the decline in oil prices in 2015-16. Since then, he added, the growth had been quite anaemic and had put a lot of pressure on standards of living.

He said it had provided support for Nigeria earlier in the year to try to cushion the effects of the pandemic and the economic crisis that unfolded on Nigeria.

He said, “I think this is exactly why we have been on the record in Nigeria about how really critical it is to get all of the policy induced barriers out of the way to facilitate stronger economic growth.

“For the government to do more to raise revenues through the area of non-oil resources to be able to invest in health education which would, you know, allow people to be more successful at getting jobs but also improve the economy’s potential.

funding taking into cognizance its usefulness and importance to the training of indigenous manpower.

“I am not unaware of the funding challenges confronting the scheme. I am equally conscious of the fact that funding has improved since the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“This leads to the payment of the backlog of some unpaid allowances to supervisors and students.

are burning our petrol trucks as we speak right now in Warri. They are burning three trucks. The cost or value of the content in those trucks is about N90m.

“That is outside the worth of the trucks that are being burnt. This is why we asked our tanker drivers to park or temporarily halt the movement of products.”

Economic Confidential had reported on Thursday that oil marketers had asked petroleum tanker drivers to temporarily suspend the movement of petrol, diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, among others, as a result of the #EndSARS protests in various locations nationwide.

Ukadike had told our correspondent on Wednesday that the decision to pause the movement of petroleum products was to avert any disaster that could arise from the vandalism of oil tankers by angry protesters.

“That advice on the temporary halt of tankers movement was vital,

that the fund has trained and empowered over 500,000 Nigerians.

Katagum, represented by Mallam Aminu Dogondaji, Technical Assistant to the minister, also commended the fund for expanding its training infrastructure by completing and commissioning several projects that have been abandoned for decades.

“In addition, the fund also automated most of its processes, including training services, financial transactions, remittance of training contributions, reimbursement activities and SIWES”, said.

According to the minister, the conference will assess loopholes in the modus operandi of its activities and programmes and strategize so as to achieve set goals.

Katagum, however, said the conference is apt in light of the challenges confronting the implementation of the scheme as a result of COVID-19, amongst others.

The conference which had in attendance relevant stakeholders, including representatives of institutions of higher learning, had its theme as “Implementation of SIWES in the New World Order; Roles and Responsibilities of Stakeholders.

address the concerns of protesters.

On their part, OMPALAN in a statement signed by its BOT, Chairman, Udo Azogu, said the demands of the protesting youths were genuine.

It, however, called for the immediate cessation of the nationwide demonstrations in view of the government’s endorsement of the initial five-point demand by the protesters.

It said, “This will enable the government to fully deploy its machinery to attend to the demands of the protesting youths without distractions.

“It will also close the door to miscreants desiring to use the occasion to cause a breach of constitutional peace and order as is being witnessed across the country.”

OMPALAN said it was disturbed that the good intentions of the protesting youths were gradually being hijacked by aggrieved persons who were now calling for regime change.

“But considering the increasing financial constraints facing the scheme due to annual increase in the number of participating institutions and students, a case for such increment is not unreasonable,” he said.

He assured all stakeholders that the output of their deliberations will be forwarded to the ministry for further action in view of attempts to resolve issues bordering the scheme.

Mariam Katagum, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, lauded the efforts of the ITF management, adding that it is impressive

particularly for volatile locations where protesters are highly aggressive. So that is what is happening now in Warri, the petrol trucks of oil marketers are being burnt,” he stated on Thursday.

The IPMAN official urged the Federal Government to dialogue with protesters, adding that protests should be carried out in designated areas to avoid the destruction of public infrastructure.

He said there was a need for the government to empower a team that would adequately

#EndSARS: National Assembly, Buhari’s Relationship Goes Sour?

Lawan Buhari

By ABdul lAteef tAiwo BAmgBose

On Thursday, October 22 when President Muhammadu Buhari seized the opportunity to address the nation after days of pressure from both the international community and concerned Nigerians on the protests by Nigerian youths on the #EndSARS and the invasion of the Lekki Toll plaza, in Lagos , the broadcast has been received with mixed feelings.

AljazirahNigeria gathered that political observers of the event of the last two weeks have continued to express their disappointment over the failure of the President to address the critical issues of the killing of the protesters at the Lekki Toll plaza by yet to be identified soldiers.

“It has become necessary for me to address you having heard from many concerned Nigerians and having concluded a meeting with all the Security Chiefs”.

Buhari stated in his broadcast, what he failed to mention in his earlier meeting with President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila in the villa, Nigeria seat of power, to discuss the #Endsars protests.

Few days after the shuttle to the Presidential Villa, the leadership of the National Assembly, perhaps disappointed by President Buhari’s delay in addressing the nation, went further to issue statements which subtly expressed their frustrations.

Short of calling President Buhari’s bluff, Hon. Gbajabiamila says he would not sign the 2021 Appropriation Bill if compensation for victims of police brutality was not captured in it.

Gbajabiamila said this while addressing Members of the House at plenary in Abuja, Tuesday, October 20.

Mr. Speaker also said that the budget must meet the reasonable demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) before he signs

it.He also said that there is no better

time to rethink the system of funding for higher education in Nigeria than now as the current system does a great disservice to the country.

Gbajabiamila promised to visit some of the families of those who lost loved ones to police brutality and to honour the memory of the deceased.

He pledged that the House of Representatives will pass an Electoral Reform Bill in time for the next general elections to continue to improve the process of electing political representatives at all levels.

The lawmaker said that he supports the amendment of the Constitution to ensure that the provisions on fundamental human rights have teeth.

He said that he supports an amendment that will ensure resource control is dealt with equitably so that the next generation of Nigerians does not inherit evident dysfunctions of the current system.

Gbajabiamila urged the youths protesting against police brutality to partner the government for a new Nigeria.

He commended the dexterity of the young people across Nigeria who had called for change as midwives of national rebirth.

According to him, “you have moved a nation to action, and now you must

Explaining the motion, Senator Olujimi said most of the prayers adopted should serve as wake up calls to the government.

She lamented that the government had not been proactive in addressing issues pointing out that this government is worse in that regard.

According to her, ignoring the issues raised by the protesters could push the country into more difficult times.

The specific prayers of the motion tagged “#ENDSARS protest: Need for comprehensive and holistic reform” are:

*That all tiers of government put in place and sustain policies and programmes of socio-economic reforms that raise the standard and quality of life of our people, particularly youths who are leaders of tomorrow;

*That the police and other security agencies operate strictly in accordance with the rules of engagement appropriate to a democratic environment that abjures the use of aggressive and brutal force against peaceful protesters;

*That the Inspector General of Police ensures a holistic, comprehensive reforms of the police to include the overhaul of the welfare, training and medical insurance of all members of the Nigerian Police Force;

*That all Nigerians should resort to use of legal and institutional channels of resolving conflicts and disputes instead of misusing security agencies to secure undue advantages;

That Nigerian youths and the Nigerian citizens should approach the National Assembly Committees on Constitutional Reforms in order to secure far-reaching and holistic amendments that are vital to the restructuring and re-shaping our Federation to make it an inclusive

join in doing the hard work of making real the vision of a more just, more prosperous, and more resilient nation.

“We see your true cause, please do not allow your righteous cause to be hijacked by those with bias motives, who see this moment as an opportunity to pursue vendetta, to spread division, exploit the many existing fissures that exist in our society and bring our nation to its knees.

“You have raised your voices and marched to demand a better Nigeria, from Abuja to Washington, to Calgary and London; your voices have been heard.”

AljazirahNigeria gathered that the leadership of the National Assembly had come under pressure to discuss the #EndSARS protest on the floors of the two Chambers , but wary of the implications of the tension, the President of the Senate on the same Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately address the nation on the raging #EndSARS protests . There appears to be some point of departure by the President and the National Assembly on the handling of the #EndSARS imbroglio.

Most Senators including the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, testified that they had witnessed cases of police brutality in the past.po

Wike’s IPOB Proscription May Spark ‘Revolt’StorieS by Ayomide Alegbe

Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike’s proscription of all the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state, for allegedly causing violence and destruction is capable of breeding fresh tension in the state, feelers indicate.

Governor Wike gave the order on Friday, October 23 in a statewide broadcast after it was reported that members of IPOB caused mayhem at Oyigbo Local Government Area and some parts of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area on Tuesday, October 21, 2020.

During the statewide broadcast, Governor Wike stated that his administration had severally

pleaded, warned and even advised IPOB and its members to discontinue its insurrectional actions in Rivers State, but to no avail.

He said: “As a Government, we owe our people and all residents the responsibility to protect lives, property, improve wellbeing and to prevent trouble-makers of all shades and character from violating our collective peace, security and pursuit of happiness.

“Therefore, in view of the fact that IPOB has since been proscribed throughout Nigeria; and

“Having come to the firm conclusion that the activities of the banned IPOB are not just dangerous to lives and property, but also, constitute a clear and present

threat to the existential interest and aspirations of Rivers State and all our people.

“We have decided to reinforce,

implement and enforce the existing judicial and national ban on IPOB by putting a total and complete stop to its presence and or activities in Rivers State or any part thereof.

“Accordingly, as from today, October 23, 2020, the Rivers State Government has: Outlawed IPOB from existing and or operating in Rivers State or any part thereof in line with the proscription order of the Federal High Court and the Federal Government.

“No form of procession and or agitation by IPOB or any of its affiliates is allowed to take place in Rivers State or any part thereof, hence forth.

“Security agencies are hereby directed to stop any form of procession or agitation by IPOB

in Rivers State or any part thereof and arrest and prosecute any person or group that identifies with the membership or activities of IPOB in the State; “Government will issue an executive order to strengthen and ensure the effective enforcement of these measures; “We cannot allow IPOB miscreants and other misguided similar groups to threaten our collective peace, security and wellbeing under whatever guise”, Wike concluded.

But there is an uneasy calm in the areas affected by his broadcast as AljazirahNigeria learnt the affected communities and IPOB members are waiting for a response after consultations with their parent IPOB body which is yet to officially react to the development.

Why Ayade Appeases The Youths

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence and Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti Corruption, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has commended patriotic youths in the northern parts of Nigeria for refusing to join the violent #ENDSARS protests that had erupted in the southern parts of Nigeria, even as the presidency has rationalized its action since the #EndSARS began in the country.

Wammako’s position was contained in a release signed and issued to newsmen by his media aide, Bashir Rabe Mani.

It further said Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North Senatorial

District, made the commendation at his Sahabi Dange Road, Sokoto, residence on Thursday, October 22, when he addressed a mammoth crowd of youths shortly after his return from an official trip to Abuja.

It was reported Friday’s virtual meeting of the president had all former living Nigerian leaders present.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and heads of security agencies also attended the meeting.

According to Adesina, President Buhari listed the concessions

Meanwhile, the Senate has suspended the plenary for two

weeks to enable it to engage Nigerian officials for the budget defence. But many of the Lawmakers believe the decision to suspend the plenary by the leadership was to wade off the pressure from the Lawmakers who were angling for a show down following the alleged refusal of President Buhari to rein in on the protesters.

A lawmaker from the South-west, who does not want his name published told AljazirahNigeria that, “ We are just coming from a

recess, when we were to resume, to avoid the debate on the hike in fuel price and increment in electricity tariff, the Leadership decided to extend the resumptions date and since we resume no lawmaker was allowed to discuss this issues that affects Nigerians”.

At least Thirty-five members of the National Assembly have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to identify and prosecute for murder, all the officers who participated in the Lekki killings.

Some soldiers were caught on camera opening fire at unarmed protesters who sang the national

anthem as they waved the Nigerian flag.

The lawmakers, 4 Senators and 31 members of the House of Representatives issued a joint statement on Wednesday asking that the perpetrators of this massacre be brought to justice.

The lawmakers condemned this action by government and security agencies. Further, they said that the massacre was totally unwarranted and therefore, inexcusable. They further said that there is no justification whatsoever for security officials who are paid with taxpayers’ money to kill unarmed protesters.

By Wisdom onyeisi

It is still in the front burner of issues in the country as many have continued to discuss the issue of the deregulation of the downstream oil sector.

The Federal Government says the deregulation of the sector is aimed at allowing market forces to determine the prices of petroleum products.

“It has become expedient for the Ministry of Petroleum to explain misconceptions around the issue of petroleum products deregulation’’, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva stressed.

According to him, it is unrealistic to continue to subsidise petrol as it has no economic value.

“More so, when the subsidy was benefiting in large part the rich rather than the poor and ordinary Nigerians.

“Deregulation means that the government will no longer continue to be the main supplier of petroleum products, but will encourage the private sector to take over the role of supplying the products,’’ he explains.

However, the development has generated mixed reactions, especially from the Labour that suspects the policy might be an attempt to impoverish Nigerians who are faced with the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are surprised that at a time other countries across the world are giving palliatives to their citizens to cushion the effect of COVID-19, Nigerians are asked to pay more for petrol and electricity,’’ Nigerian Labour Congress President Ayuba Wabba, alleges.

Observers note that Nigeria is the 13th largest crude oil producer in the world with an average daily crude oil output of about two million barrels per day.

According to them, it is expected that with such output, the downstream oil sector will be full of significant investments and activities that are not the case.

They express concern that the sector is faced with numerous challenges such as inappropriate product pricing, bridging product supply, insecurity, irregular gas supply, pipeline vandalism, inadequate pipeline infrastructure and non-functional/under functioning refineries, among others.

They have, on many occasions, solicited a deregulated downstream oil sector to enable the sector to attract the much-needed investments that can turn around the economy.

But over the years, various administrations have adopted measures to tackle the challenges of the sector to ensure that all Nigerians benefit from it.

One of the measures is the introduction of subsidies for petroleum products, especially for petrol, which experts argue has caused more harm to the economy.

With this sentiment, Sylva announced a full deregulation of the downstream sector in March to play an active role in the economic development in the country.

He stated that the government would continue to monitor developments in the global market to determine the petrol pump price and would ensure that marketers did not exploit Nigerians.

This was applauded by operators in the sector who advised the government to support the deregulation policy with legal and constitutional backing.

Mr Bank-Anthony Okoroafor, Former Chairman of Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), commends this development.

According to him, the government needs to sign the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) into law to get the desired development in the oil and gas sector.

He observes that the problems around the deregulation of the downstream oil sector could be handled if there was a policy on ground directing what the sector was doing.

“Full and proper deregulation is good. We have always advocated that the forces of demand and supply dictate happenings in the market.

“It took a long time for the government to come to this decision. It requires leadership and

courage. We should all support this move.“We should move further and privatise the

refineries so that they can run more efficiently and help in addressing shortages in product supply and also reducing the pressure on our foreign exchange,’’ he observes.

Also, Mr Joe Nwakwe, the immediate past president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, says that although the time of announcing the deregulation might look unfriendly because of the economic hardship caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in country, the government needs to be encouraged in its efforts to ensure full deregulation of the downstream oil sector.

Sharing similar sentiments, Prof. Wunmi Iledare, former president of Nigerian Association of Energy Economics, believes that Nigeria may save more than five billion dollars annually if the country deregulates its downstream oil sector.

He observes that the current price of petrol is still far from what it ought to be and that deregulation and removal of subsidy are essential for the growth of the sector.

In the same vein, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Malam Mele Kyari, notes that the sector stands to gain more with the full deregulation.

He says further that the Federal Government removed subsidy on petrol because of the fraud perpetrated by some fraudulent elements in the sector.

He also observes that more than N10 trillion was spent on fuel subsidy between 2006 and 2020 without significant impact on the Nigerian

masses. He alleges that the beneficiaries of the fuel

subsidy regime are the marketers who smuggle the subsidized product to neighbouring countries.

“These marketers make more profits with fake documents to collect subsidy for fuel they never imported,’’ he alleges.

Kyari, nonetheless, says that there are plans by the government to inject more than N2.7 trillion into the economy to stimulate production, stabilize the exchange rate and cushion the inflationary effect of the pump price increase.

Commending the Federal Government for the initiative, the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, says the Federal Government has taken the courage to tackle the challenges in the downstream oil sector.

The president of the association, Mr Tunji Oyebanji, says the Federal Government displays utmost pragmatism by finding solutions to the age-long challenges in the downstream oil sector.

However, some concerned citizens have pledged support for the full deregulation of the sector but call on the government to put palliatives in place to help reduce the burden occasioned by the deregulation.

They plead with the government to ensure that savings from removal of subsidy should be channeled to projects that will serve the masses.

According to them, a full deregulation with effective policies will provide the required development in the sector and bring the desired development in the country.

Revisiting Deregulation Of Oil Downstream Sector

Deregulation means that the government will no longer continue to be the main supplier of petroleum products, but will encourage the private sector to take over the role of supplying the products.

Maintaining Healthy NailsHaving clean, healthy-looking nails is a must

for practicing good hygiene and keeping you looking decent. However, nails can also get easily damaged, whether from a bad manicure

or just the everyday wear and tear of life. Here are some things you can do to keep healthy nails:

Trim your nails straight across: This will help you avoid ingrown nails. Also, try to cut your nails right after you’ve showered or bathed so that the nails are softer. If you’d like to soften the corners or edges of your nails, use a nail file or emery board.

Avoid harsh nail polishes: Ones that contain ingredients like formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate weaken the nail. Furthermore, repeatedly using bold pigmented colors can cause your nails to become yellowed or weakened.

Use gentle nail polish remover: A base coat, and a top coat - Acetone-free nail polish removers are mild and

prevent your nail from drying out. When painting your nails, base coats help prevent your nails from getting stained. Top coats decrease the likelihood of the nail polish chipping, and lessen the frequency with which you have to remove the nail polish.

Moisturize your nails with oil to keep them flexible and strong: Like other areas of your body, your nails can benefit from being kept hydrated. Before going to sleep, try dabbing almond or avocado oil onto your nail beds and cuticles to stop them from getting dry, brittle, or flaky.

Avoid keeping your nails in wet or dirty environments: Conditions like that encourage the growth of bacteria beneath your nails, which can be difficult to dislodge.

Take steps to stop if you bite your nails: While this can be a difficult habit to break, it’s important because your mouth has germs and bacteria that can easily enter your body through abrasions created by your teeth.

Most Beautiful Tunisian-born ItalianClAudE ROsE

Claude Josephine Rose is a Tunisian-born Italian film actress who starred in some of the most acclaimed European films in the 1960s and 1970s, mainly Italian or French, but also in many

English-language films.Claude’s first film work was participating

along with classmates, in a short film by French director René Vautier, Anneaux d’or, successfully presented at the Berlin Film Festival. The film made her a minor local celebrity, and led to her being spotted by Jacques Baratier, who offered her a minor role in Goha. She accepted it reluctantly after Baratier explained he wanted a Tunisian actress rather than an Italian to star in the main role opposite the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif. The appearance nonetheless marked her feature-film debut. The turning point came in 1957 during the Italian Cinema Week in Tunis, when she won a competition for the “Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia”, with a trip to the Venice Film Festival as first prize. After being spotted by several film producers at the event, she was invited to study at the Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome under Tina Lattanzi. Despite her extremely photogenic looks, she had trouble with her acting assignments (partly owing to her difficulties with the Italian language). She left at the end of her first term and decided to return home, earning herself a cover story in the popular weekly Epoca triggered by her unexpected decision to turn her back on a career as a film star.

Back in Tunis, however, Claude discovered unexpectedly that she was pregnant, the result of what she later described as a ‘terrible’ relationship with a Frenchman, 10-years her senior, which began when she was only 17 and lasted for about a year. On this discovery, he wanted her to have an abortion, but she decided to keep the child. She solved her problems by signing a seven-year exclusive contract with Franco Cristaldi’s production company Vides.

In 2000, Cardinale embarked on her stage career, starring in Maurizio Scaparro’s stage production of La Venexiana, adapted by René de Ceccatty, at the Théâtre du Rond-Point in Paris. She also appeared in her husband’s television

film, Élisabeth - Ils sont tous nos enfants. Two years later, Cardinale went on a theatrical tour of Italy, performing in Luigi Pirandello’s Come tu mi vuoi, which Squitieri directed. She appeared as what Roger Ebert described as a “faded countess” opposite Jeremy Irons in Claude Lelouch’s thriller film And Now... Ladies and Gentlemen, portraying a character that spends her time in Fez, Morocco, with handsome gigolos. The film was screened out of competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. And Now... Ladies and Gentlemen received mixed reviews; A. O. Scott of The New York Times dismissed it as “sublimely silly”, but praised the “impeccable CinemaScope compositions” and the “lush, suave score” by Michel Legrand.

In 2005, Cardinale appeared in a Philippe Adrien stage production of Tennessee Williams’s Sweet Bird of Youth, and in the 2006/2007 season also featured in another Williams play, The Glass Menagerie, directed by Andrea Liberovici, in which she played the character of Amanda. In 2007, Cardinale appeared in the Aline Issermann comedy film Cherche fiancé tous frais payés, opposite Alexandra Lamy and Bruno Salomone, in a role which Patrick Besson described as “atrocious”. After a role in the TV movie Hold-up à l’italienne (2008), the following year Cardinale starred in the critically acclaimed The String, playing a Tunisian mother who has a tempestuous relationship with her French- educated gay son. Michael D. Klemm of

Another excellent film in which Ms. Cardinale acted, released in 2012, was The Artist and the Model.

cinemaqueer. com reflected on how the film broke many of the taboos with interracial sexuality and homosexuality. He praised Cardinale’s “terrific” acting and portrayal of the “overbearing” mother, likening one scene, where she “brings home a nice girl for Malik (Antonin Stahly) to meet”, to Harold and Maude (1971).

In 2010, Claude received the Golden Orange Best Actress Award at the 47th Antalya “Golden Orange” International Film Festival for her performance as an elderly Italian woman who takes in a young Turkish exchange student in Signora Enrica. The Turkish-Italian co-production was shot in locations in Istanbul and Rimini.

In 2012, Cardinale featured opposite Jeanne Moreau and Michael Lonsdale in the final feature film to be directed by Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, Gebo and the Shadow. Critically acclaimed, it has a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was shown at the 69th Venice International Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter described it as the “ensemble of superb older performers who comprise the remainder of the dramatis personae”. Another excellent film in which Ms. Cardinale acted, released in 2012, was The Artist and the Model. In this, she starred along with Jean Rochefort. In 2013, Cardinale starred alongside supporting actresses Patricia Black and Chloé Cunha in Nadia Szold’s Joy de V. and had a role in Ernst Gossner’s war drama The Silent Mountain, a love story set in the Dolomite Mountains at the outbreak of World War I between Italy and Austria-Hungary in 1915. Gossner described her as “a terrific spirit on the set”, and noted that Cardinale told the production team “legendary stories” about Marcello Mastroianni. In 2014, Cardinale portrayed a “sympathetic Italian chaperone” viscountess in the British period drama film Effie Gray, which was written by Emma Thompson and featured Dakota Fanning in the lead role.

On October 11, 2018 she received the Tabernas de Cine award in the Almería Western Film Festival.

Nigeria is faced with a pressing issue as the youth-led #ENDSARS protest against police brutality is increasingly gaining momentum across states, despite the imposition of curfew.

The entertainment industry has been influenced by the protest which has gained recognition among entertainers in Nigeria and beyond, as they have turned social crusaders.

Using their social influence, top Nigerian entertainers such as Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Mamuzee Twins, Naira Marley and more, have been at the forefront of the movement, chanting for better governance and an end to police brutality labelled against the citizens.

Nigerian entertainers who have been harassed by the SARS unit, keyed into the protest to express their grief and encourage the Nigerian youths to stay united in the bid to foster change in the Nigerian system. Some celebrities wrote open letters to President Muhammadu Buhari, requesting for a change in governance.

Top Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji has been vocal about her stand on the protest since its inception. The actress wrote an open letter, addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, requesting for a better system of governance.

Part of it read: “Mr. President, it is time to lead. I remain saddened by the fact that our country is only an incubator for greatness and not a habitat. The world is clearly moving on with or without us. What will your legacy be when it’s all said and done? I aspire for mine to leave a mark and not a scar. I urge you to speak to us because we are not mind readers. Your house is not in order and way far from stable. The police are not being empowered, nor being protected. Industries such as entertainment and info-tech that are currently boosting our economy and empowering the youth are being frustrated under your administration”.

Some celebrities were on the streets with the masses, championing the movement. They charged the youths not to relent in requesting for better governance and end against police brutality.

Speaking on this, Nigerian singer Douglas Jack Agu popularly known as Runtown said: “Stand against police brutality, it is important we address some issues and make certain things clear. This movement/protest has “No leader, no hidden agenda, and no political or individual undertone”. No negotiations, #EndPoliceBrutality. Give service officers good welfare, these things are basic and that’s all this movement is about”

Cinemas Seek FG’s Assistance For COVID-19 Recovery

in Nigeria, singer, Wizkid urged Nigerians not to keep silent to injustice and police brutality.

He said: “As I speak to you right now, before coming here, the IGP has just disbanded SARS. Nigerian youths, do not let anyone tell you, you do not have a voice, we all have

Nigeria’s cinema industry has urged the Federal Government to fulfill its promise of assisting the sector to fully recover from COVID-19 setbacks.

The National Chairman, Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, CEAN, Patrick Lee made the call during an interview with newsmen.

He said that members of the association had accumulated bills from unpaid taxes, rents, levies, service charges; salaries while the lockdown of COVID-19 which ravaged the world.

The association then called on the federal government to wade into the challenges of cinema operators across the country to enable them remain in business.

He noted that the sector had lost more than N6 billion to the pandemic and had only resumed business early this month.

He said: “There has been no help from government so far, only promises; we are calling on the federal government and the Lagos State Government to fulfill their promises.”

“We want government to help us at this critical period because we are still going through a hard route difficult for us to navigate.”

Lee said he was excited by Nigerians’ rekindled interest in visiting cinemas following the resumption of cinemas across the country three weeks ago.

In addition, he noted that the major sales cinemas recorded since its resumption was from the release of Nollywood Actress, Toyin Abraham’s movie “Alakada Reloaded” as sales of N57million had been recorded so far.

He said: “Nigerians’ appetite for going to the cinemas has been rekindled because this is the kind of figure we would have expected pre-COVID-19 for the release of ‘Alakada Reloaded.”

a choice. Nigerians, we deserve good governance. Thank you all for coming out, we have achieved our goal and this is just the beginning, we won.”

You will recall that a popular musician WizKid tweeted by calling out President Muhammadu Buhari to address the nation, a call that greeted backlash from Miss Lauretta Onochie.

More so, the ENDSARS protest has gained global recognition as international celebrities have joined the movement against police brutality in Nigeria.

International music star Rihanna reacted to the protest, voicing her grief on police brutality against Nigerian citizens. “I cannot bare to see this torture and police brutalization that is continuing to affect nations across our planet. It is such a betrayal to its citizens. The very people put in place to protect are the ones who are most afraid of being murdered,” she said.

In the same vein, US singer Trey Songz said: “Police brutality here in America often is an abuse of power driven by race. To be brutalized, extorted and murdered by your own

people is unimaginable. Prayers up and I am researching ways I can help. #EndSARS.”

Furthermore, the ENDSARS protests have had an impact on the Nigerian entertainment industry leading to postponement of music concerts, film production, events and more.

In a chat with AljazirahNigeria, music star Sunny Neji emphasizes on the negative impact of ENDSARS protest on the entertainment industry. He said: “The entertainment industry has been greatly affected and put on hold due to this protest and this is very sad. This protest has affected productivity and profit-making in the industry.

“This is beyond the entertainment industry; it is the whole sector of the Nigerian economy. Things are not just right which will also affect the entertainment industry. We all desire change in this country and youths have been able to organize themselves peacefully insisting that there should be change in Nigeria and it is very impactful.”

Speaking in the same vein, Nigerian duo music artists Mamuzee Twins said: “The entertainment industry has been greatly affected by the ongoing protest. Even entertainers who have scheduled events in different African countries postponed their plans because they want to be part of the movement. In the entertainment industry, productivity has been reduced and the profit level decreased.

“Not just the entertainment sector, but the business community has also been affected. If the business community does not make money, how will the entertainers make money?”

More so, Nigerian entertainers have been charged to support the movement to request for a better Nigeria. Speaking on this, Nigerian standup comedian Chukwuyem Jude Israel popularly known as Chuck D General, said: “This is the time for top entertainers to put hands together to join in the quest for a good government to stand against police brutality against Nigerian citizens.

“This is a time for influence in the entertainment industry, entertainers should use their influence, microphones, connections, celebrity life, and popularity to join and request for a better Nigeria, not for violence but a better Nigeria.”

As entertainers turn social crusaders, Nigerians await the result of this new calling of their celebrities.

Meanwhile President Buahari has on Thursday addressed the country making reassurances and calling for calm and giving the government a chance to work.

WHY DO MEN CHEAT IN RELATIONSHIPMen have so many reasons they cheat in relationship. Ranging from financial gains, fantasies, sexual satisfaction, physical attraction, need of attention and more, every woman in a relationship feels heartbroken when men cheat.

However, due to the several complaints and letters received from women about their cheating spouses, AljazirahNigeria Love Doctor conducted a vox pop on its social media handles and on the social corners of Abuja, to interact with men of social age bracket to ascertain the reasons some men cheat in relationships.

Below are some interesting responses of the public survey on the above subject matter.

EMMANuEL PETEREvery man wants to have sex with other women and when the chance arises, he takes it, which is not a big deal. It is a man’s biological craze to have sex with as many women as he can. Why should I be any different? Even though one gets enough sexual satisfaction from his wife or girl friend, he can still sleep outside. It takes the grace of God and or discipline for a man not to double date. But once I get satisfaction, I won’t cheat my wife.

WILLIAMS JOHNIf my wife did not add so much weight and if she gives me attention, I wouldn’t even think about going elsewhere. If my job was not so stressful, I wouldn’t need the release I get from online sex. Cheating, Really? I mean, who would wisely call getting a lap dance in a strip club betrayal? It’s just what guys do for fun that makes common sense to us, men are polygamous by nature. And I don’t see polygamy as cheating rather it is in every man to do what you call cheating, only through discipline that a man can overcome having another lady outside ones home.

DAvID uTOM However, everyone experiences depressed feelings and concern to a certain degree. The issue is whether those thoughts come from the relationship. “If he’s feeling lonely within his relationship, helpless and powerless in some way, he will definitely cheat. Every woman should add some spices in her relationship to keep the man always longing for her attention and company. This is what most Nigerian women are ignorant of.

TOSIN WALEMost men do cheat not because they do not love their spouse. Men cheat because they want more variety in their sex lives and some complain of being bored in their relationship. I cannot be faithful to a woman who only knows the missionary style of sexual satisfaction; she must be flexible in bed and exhibit sexually experience and maturity to gain my trust and faithfulness.

EDDY EMMANuELSome of us cheat because the ladies lack attractions and do not have the swag and packaging. Honestly, many of the women are unromantic in their dealings with their lovers, they dress inappropriately; give the man little or no attention and worst of, sleep earlier than usual just to deny the man of sexual intimacy. Why won’t I cheat on this kind of woman who is unattractive and gives no attention to her love affair?

ALPHONSuS DANIELI do not cheat, but if you ask some men why they cheat on their spouses, I would say some cheat as an act of revenge, which makes no sense. If she had cheated, it’s important to consider your drives carefully and have an honest conversation with your partner. Your partner may or may not want to repair the relationship, and you need to respect the decision, even if you want to stay together.

Cheating to satisfy your emotional hurt is a wrong act to ponder on or indulge in.

MOSES PAuLMany men cheat to satisfy sexual desire. A simple desire to have sex can inspire some people to cheat both male and female. In addition, when a woman is dirty, her lover will definitely cheat. Some women are so dirty that they irritate their lover. Some have body odour, bad breath, unfashionable dress sense and unkempt hairdo.

ADEWALE ROYALSometimes it seems like cheating is inbuilt in all the men to honest with you. But I thank God many ladies understand the reasons and feelings that envelops men causing them to cheat. But our excuses sometimes are not enough reasons to cheat but men must cheat. Unless one is discipline and have genuine repentance with the grace of God, if sexual cheating is a temptation man is 95% going to fall. I don’t the fault is ours but the way nature made it. Cheating is not exclusive to men but it has definitely looked upon as something we are much more prone to do than women. Even if we swore not to do it again, we would still do it. I think something triggers it fromm the brain and heart, this is why I said it is only self-control and grace of God that will stop a man from looking outside. Forget every reason some of us are giving. Okay! If it were those reasons, what would you say that made a man with four wives to still find sexual satisfaction outside his four wives?

A man remains a man, it is very natural to have so much sexual desire unless you are not real man and having it all the time with your one or two wives they would feel tired especially when the man doesn’t add flavor to his style of making sexual advances to his wife or wives but an acquaintance would want to treat the man with so much romance and care, makes him want to come again. Not the ladies outside do not know that the man has wives. So cheating is embedded in our DNA, take it or leave it.

From the videos and narratives that traveled around on social media, to personal experiences of those who we know, it was evidently a needed reminder that the young should be allowed to grow and be accorded life on their terms without fear of attack by agents of the state.

It was also an umbrella for the many problems facing Nigeria, many of which President Muhammed Buhari’s government has failed to find a solution to: The continued violence and insecurity in the North, the increasing depth of poverty among citizens, the atmosphere of fear and despondency, which has risen in Nigeria, among several others.

The government’s insensitivity over the years has led to the current anarchy. Anyone who has followed Nigeria’s socio-political scene in the last 20 years would see that citizens were living with frayed nerves. You could see it on their faces when you walk the street. The growing level of poverty has been unprecedented. The continued divide-and-rule tactics inherited from our colonial masters have been put to them so many times. We will not just lay the blame on the present government’s feet, but also to many forerunners whose poor governance has brought us to this mess. Most especially these individuals who had every chance to make things right: Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan.

These protesters were peaceful, and for a moment there was hope that perhaps this young generation would not allow themselves to be trampled upon, and subjected to silence and mental depression that would have them fighting anxiety and Post-traumatic Stress

Anyone who has followed Nigeria’s socio-political scene in the last 20 years would see that citizens were living with frayed nerves. You could see it on their faces when you walk the street.

Disorder, PTSD, all of their lives. However, what we and many others did not consider, even though we knew it, was that the nation’s citizens were already agitated from years of oppression of all forms. A revolt was imminent, even though no one knew how it would happen.

We hope this is a lesson for the government to act like an institution that considers its people as truly human. Those young anarchists that disrupted a genuine peaceful protest are only tools in the hands of a government that offered them no chance at becoming themselves. Understandably, they feel a resentment because they only see those who are “doing better” as the enemy.

The political players who stayed silent, or

allowed themselves to be used to instigate trouble on the promise that the ensuing chaos would benefit their long-term hold on power, should know that the tiger they are feeding will consume them in the end. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” as Martin Luther King said. If Nigeria must work, it must work for everyone: Poor, rich, educated, illiterate, religious or agnostic, gay, straight, abled or disabled, and the very many other shades of difference that exist among us.

This is a time to think, do better, and be better. As Wolé Sóyínká says, justice is the first condition of humanity. A country in which dissent is stifled with the force of arms, where education is given little priority, where its leaders live large, while the majority live in squalor and despair, where young people are treated like effete children with no mind of their own, where no palliative exists for impoverished communities, and impunity is the order of the day, is one about to collapse on itself. Unless, of course, the strong-headed tenacity of its youth, throbbing in the many creative energies we see around us, persists to save the country from itself.

– Jumoke Verissimo, a poet, and Kola Tubosun, a linguist, are both acclaimed writers.

#Endsars Protesters’ Demands: Nigerians speak

JANE NWACHUKWU, CIVIL SERVANTI support the demands the protesters made, everything they asked for will help build a new and better Nigeria because this our country is already messed up by our so called government and the only option we have so that the country will not collapse is the seven point reformed demand which is institutional reforms, cost of governance, constitutional reforms, education reforms, health reforms, youth affairs and public office reforms and I will advise that the government listen and act on the demands of the protesters in order to avoid collapse of Nigeria.

FRANK JOHN, STUDENTThis thing is not hard, we voted you in and you are in that position to serve us so if we are telling you what we are passing through as and what can be done to savage the situation, what I expect is that you work on it, simply. We were fighting against SARS and police brutality and all can be done by the government is to change the name of SARS to SWAT, what a government? It’s high time the government knows that they are not leading dumbest but humans with feelings and until our demands are met, protests continue, revolutions take place.

VICTORIA BENSON, STUDENTSince the government has decided to ruin the country, I think the best thing is for citizens to take the future of the country to their hands and that is what we are doing. The government does not care about the country, so the citizens are telling them give us this or you leave power. Enough of our brothers and sisters that have been killed by same people that are meant to protect us, enough of having our kids roam about the street because we can’t afford to give them a living due to the failed government, enough of our wives dying during labour because of poor health facilities at our public hospitals just because we can’t afford the private hospital or travel out for treatment as they do, enough of our graduate roaming about the streets after graduation, no employment because they don’t have connection or money to bribe to get employment, enough of embezzlement. As a country we put our voice together to say “No to bad governance”. We’ve had enough of it.

JOSEPH IFEANYI, SELF EMPLOYEDThe government should please grant the demands of the protesters’. This protest is becoming something else to the extent that people get to sleep on the road because of no movement and besides everything that is stated in the list by the

The #ENDSARS protesters issued certain reform demands to the Federal Government. What is your opinion about the demands? AljazirahNigeria’s DEBORAH ABIODUN and AYOMIDE ALAGBE went round the city of

Abuja to get the responses of Nigerians.

protesters is for the advancement of the country, so the government should listen.

JOEL MICHEAL, SENIOR CITIzENThe damages in this country did not happen one day, so we know that the repair won’t be one day but the president should find a way to speak to the protesters and assure them that things will be put in place at least that will make Nigerians know that the president is feeling our pains. He should reassure us of a better government.

ADAMU HARUNA, CIVIL SERVANTThis ongoing protest is making me believe that truly Nigeria has a future, long before now I already gave up on Nigeria but the protest is making my lost hope come alive again and concerning the demands made; the government should grant them what they requested for because that is the only way we can sort out the issues we have in this country.

MARTINS JOHN, LAWYERMy opinion about this issue is that the government should listen to the youth, they should grant their demand so that the country can be at peace. Because many people have lost their lives and properties during the course of the protest, we can’t continue like this, it is not favorable to us. The government should act in order to avoid the protesters pressing on.

ADEWALE ROYAL, CITIzENAm in full support with the protesters, they are doing the right thing, it our right to demand for justices. Governments are not helping issues at all; they are just making decisions that can never favor the country. The Federal Government should grant us our demand and also the Police officers must no longer work in plain clothes but always appear in their uniform or permitted strategic gear, and their duties should be limited to robbery cases, kidnapping, the likes, and not harassing innocent people on the street. If they do all of this, I rest assured peace with flow in our country.

PAUL PETER, STUDENTI see no crime or anything wrong for the protesters to demand something from the government and besides our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. I am being prepared regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality and unethical conduct, and ensure that the Police are fully accountable to the people that all we demand from the government and nothing more. So therefore they should grant us our demand. We are tired of the

way things are going wrongly.

SALMAN HAMMAD, TEACHERTo every youth taking this as seriously as they should, let me say that you all are the real heroes! Whether they like it or not, Nigeria belongs to us and we won’t allow ourselves to be slaughtered day in, day out. What we requested from the government is nothing much. We just want to enjoy that which we are entitled to.

PAUL KINGSLEY, ENGINEERWell I don’t have much to say about these issues and my opinion on this is that the government should try all they could to meet the protesters’ demands because these people are bringing peace, unity and togetherness to the country. They mean no harm to the country, all they just want is for the government to join hands with them and make peace and unity in the country.

Super Eagles wonder kid Junior Ajayi has contributed his quota as Egypt’s Ahly qualified for their third African Champions League final in four years in emphatic fashion, outclassing Morocco’s Wydad 3-1 in Cairo for a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory on Friday.

The Cairo giants moved a step closer to ending a seven-year wait for a Champions League triumph, having won the last of their record eight titles in 2013.

Striker Marwan Mohsen killed off Wydad’s hopes as early as the seventh minute, with his neat goal, which was awarded after a VAR review, leaving the visitors needing to score three goals to advance.

Winger Hussein El-Shahat added a second on 26 minutes after embarrassing his challenger with a superb piece of individual skill before defender Yasser Ibrahim rubbed salt into the wounds of a below-par Wydad side with a second-half header.

Substitute Zouhair El Moutaraji netted a

consolation but it was too little, too late as Ahly exacted revenge on Wydad, who beat the Red Devils 2-1 on aggregate in the 2017 final.

They set some records in the process, including the longest winning streak at home (17 games), biggest number of goals in a single competition (34) and a record-extending 13th appearance in the final.

However, Super Eagles Star Ajayi lasted 75 minutes in the highly entertaining game in Cairo.

The International Olympic Committee is certain that the Olympic Games will continue next year, as the organization takes into account four different models, from the worst-case scenario where the virus is still raging everywhere to the best normalized scenario.

In a webinar with all National Olympic Committees, the IOC focused on the idea that there will still be local clusters and that distance will remain the norm, but also that a vaccine will be on the market that will vaccinate all Olympic athletes for the start of Tokyo 2021.

According to IOC chief physician Johan Bellemans “We can say that enough vaccines will be available by the first trimester of 2021”. The IOC is in talks with the World Health Organization (WHO) about obtaining vaccines for athletes, coaches and counselors.

“Five large pharmaceutical companies are ready with their vaccine and are expecting

approval to bring them on the market in the last quarter of this year.

“The protection threshold for that approval has been set relatively low at 50%; the vaccine must protect in half of the cases. Most vaccines will easily reach that threshold. By the way, they are already rolling off the line. The demand for those vaccines will be high,”

“And the weak population has priority. But the IOC may reserve a bulk of 100,000 vaccines for the Olympic bubble with all athletes, coaches and staff.”

Nigerian athletes have lamented the crisis rocking the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, and tasked the federation to put its house in order and give them quality leadership.

The Athletes took who are not happy with the crisis that is affecting the federations vent their anger, complaining about lack of welfare and events for them.

It’s no longer news that, AFN and the Sports Ministry had been at loggerheads after a faction led by Olamide George, the federation’s Vice President, suspended the president, Ibrahim Gusau, which forced the Gusau-led board to declare autonomy from the ministry at a congress in Awka, Anambra State last December.

Gusau dragged the Sports Ministry to the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the court ruling July 1 that he remained the AFN president.

The Appeal Court also affirmed the High Court ruling, throwing out the sports ministry’s appeal for lacking merit September 25.

In a chat with AljazirahNigeria Sports Nigerian athletes are raising their voices over the continuous crisis rocking the AFN saying it’s not a good omen for the federation.

Speaking with AljazirahNigeria Sports, the 2019 African Games 100m gold medalist, Raymond Ekevwo

expressed dissatisfaction over the crisis and abysmal leadership that have rocked the federation, she said: “As we are protesting and asking for reform of our great country, I am peacefully protesting for a better management of athletics from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria because we deserve better leadership.

As for Eraiyokan Orukpe: “We are raising voices over the continuous crisis rocking the AFN and appealing to the Federation to put its house in order, the bad leaders among them should desist and have a rethink as God watches their actions”.

Also Discus-thrower Princess Kara lends her voice saying, “This is to the Athletics Federation Nigeria, if any. I might not be an Olympian or African Games champion or even Commonwealth champion, but I intend being one day and with the way the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is doing things, I don’t think people like me have a chance to go that far in this country. We want an end to poor treatment of athletes, mismanagement, no payment of allowances, no competitions year-in, year-out, tribalism/favouritism of athletes and coaches and embezzlement of funds meant for athletes.

“I come in peace and with a heavy heart. Our athletes deserve better!!! We need change; we need good leaders and men who know what it means to serve the nation with the fear of God”.

On October 6, the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, lifted the sanctions on Mali, to the relief of Malians and

the leadership of the conflict-ravaged country. Despite the traditional pessimism about ECOWAS, it successfully mobilised against the military incursion into power in Mali. The ECOWAS mediation team to Mali, led by the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, had no time to celebrate as his country, Nigeria, soon became embroiled in protests against the administration of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

After days of protests tagged #EndSARS in Nigeria’s major cities, calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, due to its extreme brutality and lawlessness, Nigeria’s inspector-general of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced the dissolution of this notorious police unit on October 11. Yet, the protests persist. In Côte d’Ivoire, the opposition leader, Seth Koko, prevailed on ECOWAS to appeal to the incumbent president, Alassane Quattara, from contesting the October 31 election. Thus, ECOWAS’s attention – and that of the global community – have turned to Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, while also keeping an eye on Mali.

In Mali, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, CNSP, controlled by the putschists, has appointed a former defence minister, Bah N’Daw, as a civilian

president; the coup leader, Colonel Assimi Goïta, as vice president; and Moctar Ouane as the prime minister. The CNSP has also removed a clause that gave the vice president the authority to replace the president of the transition, if the office is deemed vacant. This was a partial victory for ECOWAS. However, experience has shown that any civilian transition headed by military personnel is a red flag. Furthermore, the decision to exclude the civil society coalition, the M5-RFP, from the transitional government may live back to haunt the transitional team.

West Africa and the Sahel have become the theatres of violent conflicts. The number of violent Fulani herdsmen in the Sahel are undocumented, but Boko Haram and Al Qaeda boast of about 15,000 and 5,000 members, respectively. In the Sahel, four countries are currently experiencing armed conflict: Nigeria is battling to contain Boko Haram’s terrorism,

which has threatened the territorial integrity of the country, killed more than 50,000 and internally-displaced 2.1 million people; security is being challenged by pastoral conflict in Chad; Sudan is engrossed in violent protest and, concurrently, combating armed conflict; and Mali is struggling to contain violent extremism and a military putsch.

The Sahel has experienced other threats from the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad, the Group to Support Muslims and Islam (linked to Al-Qaeda), the Tuareg/Fulani herdsmen, pastoral warlords, Boko Haram, and oil militancy. Despite the interventions of the 15,209-strong United Nations, UN, peacekeeping mission and the 5,000 French troops in the Sahel, the joint-force of the G5 Sahel, the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, the West African Multinational Joint Task Force, the efforts of the UN office for West Africa, the ECOWAS’s mediation team and the national security forces of member-states, the region is still under a siege and sitting on a time bomb. While the African Union and other sub-regional bodies such as ECOWAS and Intergovernmental Authority on Development, IGAD, are committed to “Silencing the Gun in Africa by 2020”, the guns keep blasting – loud and louder – in the Sahel.
