WATCHING MOVIES TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S LISTENING SKILL

A. INTRODUCTION

a. Problem Background

Nowadays, many students do not understand about

listening in ESL. They’re difficult to listen the vocabulary

that the native speaker has said. Even though they know the

English vocabulary well, but the listening material is not

easy for the students if it isn’t hear well. If the students

are not always listening the words or vocabularies from the

alternative media, they can not listen it exactly. So, to solve

this problem, the teacher/lecturer must introduce the media and

use it in English Language Teaching for the students. The

media like; movie can improve the students basic skill in

listening, because, the movie is an alternative media that can

make the students are interested in learning, get new

vocabularies and can pronounce them well.

For the first basic skill, listening is paying

attention with the sound, how is it told and focus with the

other person to uses his/her body. Without listening, we can

not speak what the people mean. Listening is also needed by every

people to express the words well. The lecturer and students will

be easy to understand it in learning the material. In ELT,

listening must be trained as often as possible for students.

Based on the graph above, we can see since 2011 until

2014 the student’s vocabularies is increase rapidly, why?

Because watching the movie can get new vocabularies every they

watching it. So, watching movie is effective way for them to

improve listening skill.

b. Purpose

The purpose to discuss watching movie is to make the

students will understand listening the vocabulary, they can get

new vocabularies and how to pronounce them well in ELT. If the

students always listen to vocabularies from the alternative media

especially “ the movie”, they are entertained. The other hand,

they get the knowledge from the movie. The movie shows the

visual and voice from the actor/actrees, so it can ease the

students to comprehend ELT/L. Movies show the good speakers and

then, the student can imitate the words. Informal and formal

words also showed in the movie and the students will get

many knowledge from it.

B. CONTENT

I. Watching movie in listening class

a. Watching movie (what and how to have it +

picture/example

Watching movie is the best way to improve the

listening skill of students. It makes the students can speak as

foreign people. The use of movie is make the students are able to

improve their listening skill and remember about the vocabulary

in the movie. Because, it is a potential to manage the real-

life situation, real emotion, how to pronounce the vocabularies

in classroom. So, the students can be the good communication

each other.

Learning English through movies is very interesting.

In fact, English students have many advantages for them to

regarding the other language. Western movies are better to

improve their skill because it is created in English language

film. As international language, the western movies are useful

for the students in ELL.

The reason of the students watching movie in English

is to hear the voice of the original British and original movie

because, if the actrees/actor and movies are not original, so the

students will not understand how to pronounce what they are

talking about. Then, it isn’t interesting for the English

student in learning it. After that, the students don’t

understand the way to speak as the foreign people.

The way to get movies are through the social

media such as ‘Youtube”. In Youtube, the students can

choose whatever movies that lecturer have given. The

students also can get the movies from CD/DVD and Flash

Disk. Then, it also can as the homework for the students.

The other side, they get the knowledge about the social

media and how to do that . So, the lecturer gives the

instruction to get the movies. After that, the students

will get the way to use it and download it.

Movies can watch at home, however it is not the

lesson material from the lecturer. Whenever the students can

watch and listening movie, because the movies can increase

the knowledge for the students when they are listening,

they will get two points. For example, they feel comfort and

entertained, then they can get a new knowledge/information. It’s

more helpful and useful for the students. So, it’s no matter

whenever they learn that.

The students and lecturers need this media,

because if the lecturers don’t have it, they aren’t able to

teach well and explain about the material that he has

given. It’s too hard for the lecturer to describe and

define the way to learn English in classroom well. For the

students, they also don’t understand what the material that

lecturer has taught because the media is not support the

situation of the classroom in ELT/L.

watching movie in classroom.

b. How to implementation the movie in classroom listening

In the classroom, the students use the media for the

listening is watching the movie like through Youtube ,VCD,DVD,

etch. The implementation for the students are, the lecturer turn

on the movie without subtitle and give the piece of paper .

After that, the lecturer give exercise for the students to

write the vocabulary from the movie. Then, the lecturer

give 3 times occasion to listen it. It can assign the

student’s skill in getting vocabularies from movie. If they

get many vocabularies, so they may be understand and able

develop their ability. With this way, the students will be

focus and remember the vocabularies from the movie.

II. Conclusion and Suggestion

In conclusion, watching movie is useful for the

students because the students will not bored in learning.

As modern technology, the movie is very interesting. Watching

movie is the best way to improve our listening skill, because

it can show the visual and audio that ease the students to

understand it. Movies can we get from the social media, such as;

Yutube,DVD,VCD,etc. Listening the movies can do everywhere and

whenever we have the time. Especially in the classroom, to

apply the listening movie is show the movie and turn on the

subtitle of movie. Then, the lecturer asks the students to write

their answer on paper to test their skill. If the students

have left many vocabularies in the movies, the lecturer may

repeat the previous words of movie.

In my opinion, listening through movie is the best way

and helpful for the students in English Language Learning. But,

not all of the movies are good, because if the movie related with

a bad habit or bad words, so the students will be easy to imitate

the words that have showed. For the students, we must manage

our time to do the best thing in English Language Learning.

Because, it can make our way in learning get better or bad. So,

in this modern era, we must use the modern technology as can

as possible we have to comprehend ELL. Then, we can reach the

goal of listening basic skill.
