INTRODUCTION You’ve likely heard the phrase, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” This is the approach we should take towards consumption and disposal of materials. However, applying this phrase for everything we encounter can be confusing, unclear, or outright inconvenient. What do you do with those old records or that toaster oven that you don't need anymore? What about that expired car battery and the carpet scraps out in the garage? Your old cell phones? This document is not only designed to answer these tricky questions and to help keep your reusable and recyclable materials out of the landfill, but it will also help you start thinking about the value of your objects and purchasing decisions. Can your objects be repaired instead of thrown away? If something is no longer useful to you, is it truly considered trash? Can you buy things that are useful to you without harming the environment? Here you will find creative tips on how to reduce your waste. You will also find a directory of facilities that will repair, reuse, or recycle many of your household items. You'll see how one person's trash may be a valuable resource to someone else. By working together, we can turn our trash into treasure.

ALTERNATIVES TO NEW MATERIALS This section offers guidance on accessing items that are not new. Buying brand new items requires resources extraction, typically fossil fuels, excess water and energy use, unregulated labor practices, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, and a higher upfront cost to the consumer. Additionally, these materials eventually need a place to go, and that is often the landfill where they will emit more greenhouse gasses, take thousands of years to degrade, or leach toxins in our soils and watersheds. Unfortunately, buying new goods is directly tied to environmental degradation; however, we can obtain items still necessary to us in a way that minimizes environmental impact: finding alternatives to new materials through equipment rentals, thrift operations, and online second-hand resources.

EQUIPMENT RENTAL Many items we use are only needed occasionally, such as lawn and garden equipment, carpet steamers, power tools, etc. Renting is a great option when working on projects that require specific equipment yet do not require the item long-term. By renting equipment, you are likely saving money and ensuring that you are minimizing the resources it takes to construct new materials. Many services offered in Washtenaw County make renting a cost-effective alternative to buying the items brand new. Another strategy is to encourage tool and equipment sharing in your neighborhood. A great example is the SnowBuddy non-profit, located right in Ann Arbor. Neighbors of the Water Hill neighborhood collectively purchased a commercial snowblower and use volunteers to clear their sidewalks in the winter.

THRIFT & CONSIGNMENT OPERATIONS Thrift stores are a more cost-effective and sustainable alternative to buying new. You can find an array of items at these stores in good or like-new condition. Often, thrift stores prices are lower than new, and purchasing gently used items reduces the need to manufacture more goods. Thrifting also means reducing textile and plastic waste from reaching the landfill, and a reduction in material goods manufacturing allows for less pollution emitted in the manufacturing process. Additionally, many of the thrift operations in Washtenaw County support various social causes in the community.

Medication Increasing amounts of drugs are showing up in surrounding watersheds. When unused medications are disposed of down the drain, local waterways become contaminated as local treatment facilities are unable to filter medication. The long-term exposure our local ecology is unknown yet likely harmful. For this reason, it is important to dispose of unneeded medications through a take-back program. Visit the Medication Disposal county web page for more information. MEDICATION DISPOSAL NETWORK

Several pharmacies within Washtenaw County and the Washtenaw County Home Toxics Center have agreed to serve as depots for used sharps. ALL SHARPS MUST BE IN AN APPROVED CONTAINER Generally, these are yellow, red, or orange containers made from hard, thick plastic with a sealable, locking lid on the top.

YARD & ORGANIC WASTE Compost Saving food scraps and organic waste for composting is very important. Organic matter thrown away and trapped in landfills leads to the creation of a very potent greenhouse gas, methane, which contributes to global climate change. Compost can improve soil structure, texture, aeration, water retention and restore natural nutrients all while reducing methane emissions. You can become a Washtenaw County certified composter through the Master Composter class offered by the county, Project Grow, and Ann Arbor Public Schools Recreation and Education Program. If it is not possible to compost where you live, consider bringing it to a composting facility. Recycle Ann Arbor Drop-Off Station Accepts compost for a price of $22 per cubic yard or $2.50 per bushel. WeCare Denali The composting facility for the city of Ann Arbor. Yard WasteFallen leaves, grass clippings, pruning and trimmings comprise around 25% of the waste generated by an average household. Yard waste is not really a waste at all, but a valuable resource. Michigan state law prohibits yard waste from being disposed of in landfills or incinerators and requires more environmentally-sound handling. Composting is a natural decomposition process that transforms yard waste into humus, a valuable soil amendment. CURBSIDE YARD WASTE COLLECTION PROGRAMS

Most programs offer collection April - November, but specific programs may vary. Call your community for information.
