VOORWOORD
KWA ZULU NATAL
NUUSBRIEF / NEWS LETTER
September 2019
Landsdiensmaats
Be the change! In the world we live in, we need to make
things happen. In order to affect changes, you might have
to stand alone, but if you are not willing to stand up for the
environment, animals and people less fortunate than your-
self, nobody will.
Landsdieners `n verskil maak.
To all the matriculants, good luck with your final two school
exams. May your journey after school lead you back to your
Land Service roots and make a difference.

Empangeni High School Land Service Club
Land service has done many activities that we are very proud of this term.
Earlier this term we had our beach clean-up in Richards bay. We also invi-
ted along the Land service club from Heuwelland Primary. We picked up a
lot of rubbish and everyone involved was extremely excited to help and
do their part.
We had a washing line project for Mandela Day where we collected old
clothes from students that we donated to Phumlani Zungu of Izulu Orphan
Projects. Another one of our Mandela day projects included a visit to Em-
pangeni SPCA Where we spend 67 minutes playing, walking and washing
animals. We also made a donation towards their food supplies.
On request of our members we had a “learn how to sokkie” afternoon.
We also had a fun filled afternoon and by the end of the day our members
were all ready for the traditional sokkie dance at Nationals and future
camps.
skoon skoolterrein.
Land Service members have been busy making gifts for our Orphanage fun day, planned later in the Term. They have made sweetie jars, bracelets and decorated diaries.
Ladysmith High School
2019 is and was an extremely busy year with lots of school activities. In between all the winter sport practices, we attended Land Service on Friday afternoons. Unfortunately, we share Fridays with choir practices, but regardless the fact that we have many talented Land Service members, we still had many learners attended Land Service. We cleaned Stinkspruit and the surrounding areas that many people use as a dumpsite. We did hand crafts, raised money for the SPCA and the school’s feeding scheme, we watched a movie and we had boeresport where most of the learners tried their utter best not to get wet on a colder afternoon. We had a successful Provincial camp at Mooiriver with no cellphone network, a donkey for hot water, good food, enjoyable activities and very cold weather. We are very proud of the ten learners who were selected to attend the National Camps. We started this term with a social evening where you could bring a non-Land Service member to introduce them to the Land Service family and traditions. We work, we play, we enjoy Land Service
Piet Retief se Uile dag
Hoe hoe #Landsdiens laerskool Piet Retief.
Plastic industry tackles annual clean-up and recycle week
(Original article copied from Highway Mail)
A LOCAL plastic industry will once again demonstrate its commitment to cleaning up the environment and removing plastic litter from rivers, streams, oceans and neighbourhoods when the annual Clean-up and Recycle SA Week takes place from 16-21 September 2019.
According to Douw Steyn, Sustainability Director of Plastics SA, this is the 23rd year that they will be involved in this initia-tive.
“c began as a project of the plastics industry and Ezemvelo/KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, in 1996. Since then, it has grown to in-clude the participation of all the packaging streams (i.e. paper, glass, metal and tetra packaging) as well as the support of major plastic raw material suppliers, converters, brand owners and retailers, PRO’s (Product Responsibility Organisations), recycling bodies, conservationists and government,” said Steyn.
“This week will culminate in Recycling Day on Friday, 20 September 2019 and South Africa’s participation in the Interna-tional Coastal Clean-Up and the Let’s Do It! World Clean-Up (Saturday, 21 September). Last year, this clean-up event attracted 17 million volunteers from 158 countries, who participated in clean-ups that took place around the globe on the same day. Despite six tropical cyclones, ongoing wars, conflicts and unrest, this was the largest organised clean-up that has ever taken place in a time-span of 36 hours. South Africa was proud to be part of this global event and we look forward to once again doing our bit to create immediate, and hopefully, lasting change this year,” Steyn added.
Moreover, the plastic industry body helps to raise awareness of these events by listing them on the Clean-Up and Recycle SA website (www.cleanupandrecycle.co.za).
