Hello everyone! I managed to catch Wonder Woman on the second day of release and to say it was simply enjoyable is an understatement. I left the theatre feeling like I’ve found a truly relatable superhero I could look up to. Ah, the result of compelling story-telling! It makes us believe that we can do more, want more and become more. Some residents have found that it is possible to bring part of that fantasy to life; and they achieve it through engaging in cosplay. Find out more from them inside. Happy reading!

OUR URBAN SANCTUARY

2017 marks the 50th year of National Service. For half a decade, NS has fulfilled Singapore’s critical need for defence and security, and provided the peace and stability upon which we have built our country. As part of the commemorative initiatives, divisional NS50 Appreciation Ceremonies were organised to show appreciation to residents who had contributed to Singapore’s nation-building journey. NS50 Recognition Packages were presented to past and present national servicemen who have served their country dutifully.

CLEANERS’ APPRECIATION DAY

Punggol Coast

Every day, hundreds of our cleaners work early in the day and long into the night just to keep Pasir Ris-Punggol clean. For their service to the community, each division organised their own Cleaners’ Appreciation Day (CAD) to give due recognition to the ones who make our living environment pleasant. One such person is Mr Hasahn, a 23-year-old Bangladeshi who has been here for three years. Working to support his family, he said that Singapore is a “small but wonderful country” and has hopes of starting his own business back home next time. At the CAD events, cleaners like Hasahn were presented with vouchers and treated to a nice meal to thank them for their enduring effort.

The MPs of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC were in full force at the combined block visit in April. As a team, the six of them visited seven blocks within Coral Heights Zone to update residents about the various happenings in Pasir Ris as well as the ongoing Neighbourhood Renewal Programme. Together with the grassroots volunteers, the MPs do regular cross visits to each other’s divisions so as to better grasp the town’s overarching needs and concerns.

The Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme was initiated as a new comprehensive blueprint to renew and further develop existing HDB towns and estates. At the launch, it was unveiled that a unique 1.2km long Central Greenway will be constructed as part of Pasir Ris’ rejuvenation plans. Running from Pasir Ris Park, through the town centre, and ending near the Tampines Expressway, the pathway will allow residents to access the park and coastal beach area easier by bicycle or by foot. Furthermore, Pasir Ris Town will see new developments like the Town Plaza. Existing community malls, neighbourhood parks and the bus interchange will also receive upgrades to better cater to the needs of the community.

RIGHT UP THEIR ALLEY! In the Hindu culture, Tamil New Year falls on 14 April every year. To usher in their New Year, the Pasir Ris East Indian Activity Executive Committee organised a bowling tournament and welcomed anyone who

wanted to celebrate the joyous festivity with them! Themed Champions of Champs 2017, some 60 participants formed groups of five and bowled their hearts out in a bid to win some

very attractive prizes. The event was not only a great way to celebrate the festivity, but also wonderful in helping the volunteers build

camaraderie through this team building sport.

Residents played giant Jenga, nibbled on kachang puteh, and made new acquaintances at the Punggol Breeze block party – a get-together aimed at bringing neighbours living in that estate closer to one another. Organised by Punggol Horizon Residents’

Committee, the event was also a platform to introduce them to an array of existing community initiatives such as the Punggol

North Wheelers on Watch (WoW), an interest group made up of people passionate about wheeling (i.e. bicycles and electric unicycles)

and serving the community. Residents were also encouraged to sign up for the free Community Emergency Preparedness Programme organised by the Singapore Civil Defence Force where they will learn first aid, CPR-AED, and basic fire fighting techniques.

Two New RCs have joined the Punggol East family!

Rivervale Delta RC opened its doors with a bang by hosting a welcome party for Delta precinct residents moving into Blocks 162A-C, 163A-C & 164A-C. They were entertained by a myriad of activities, which included games, contests, snacks as well as a special Xin Yao performance by Allan Moo! Having just completed renovations, residents can look forward to not only new furniture, but also a series of exciting courses and activities that will be conducted at the RC in the future.

More than 25,000 people thronged Downtown East on 13 and 14 May as Cosfest Asia returned for its 16th run, reuniting cosplayers and its fans from all over Singapore for two days of pure, unadulterated anime magic. For those like us at Vibes who’ve never been to such a convention before, being in a sandstorm of cosplayers with hyper-realistic costumes will elicit one distinct thought: you’d feel downright boring and out of place in your civilian t-shirt and jeans.

But after several minutes of minor gawking and sensory recalibrating, you start to appreciate Cosfest in all its dreamlike glory. It’s the pride and attention to the smallest details that make cosplay so fascinating, and so different, from normal costuming (i.e. Halloween). “People think it’s only about costumes, makeup and posing,” says Lefty Kenji (pg 13). “They don’t realise how much time we have to put in when learning to embody a specific character.”

From a character’s specific hand gesture to their trademark strut, mimicking their mannerisms accurately is a matter of time and practice. What is hard to replicate though, is the sense of inclusion cosplayers get from being a part of a community; with many echoing the sentiment that cosplay, like any other hobby out there, is a way for people to make friends, form connections, and share experiences.

The cosplay effect even extends to improving the emotional well-being of its participants. Yet for spectators who cannot wrap their heads around why anybody would choose to dress up as a comic book character outside of Halloween, there’s an inclination to dismiss it as strange and even shallow. To help us understand the motivations and unique impact cosplaying has on individuals, these residents share how cosplay has the power to transform lives.

Cosplaying is a pastime as well as an art which allows us an infinite process of learning and creativity. We get to be involved in various handicrafts like costume making, prop making, wig styling etc, as well as character portrayal in front of cameras and via performances on stage. Furthermore, cosplaying together as a husband and wife duo allows us to create many precious memories through a common interest.

Rohan Kishibe, a character from JoJo the manga, resonates with me because he’s a mangaka (manga artist) and I’m an artist myself. We share the same persistence and craziness in search of new story ideas, and the character inspires me to search for ways to improve myself and hone my artistic ways. He always says, and this quote influences me deeply, “In order to create a realistic comic story, it is absolutely necessary to experience a lot of practical experiences”. Cosplaying has helped me to become less shy. I’ve grown more confident and would encourage young people to try it out. They’ll learn more about themselves in the process, and realise they can achieve so much more than they think.

Contrary to popular belief, we’re not the Power Rangers! Power Rangers is actually an adaptation of a Japanese original series called Super Sentai – and that’s what we’ve come as. These characters allow my partner and me to coordinate movement and fighting, which is important because we like to choreograph and perform. I believe cosplaying lets people become anybody you admire or want to be. It’s a great platform for anyone to gain courage, confidence, open up and interact more.

I started cosplaying because I wanted to try something new and I felt it boring to go to conventions without dressing up. After starting cosplay, I’ve met many new people and have been exposed to many new experiences; I’ve even picked up sewing and experimented with wig-trimming to suit my face shape. I feel it has made me an open person, definitely more approachable than before and open to new ideas. The most satisfying part about cosplay is when on the actual day, everything – from makeup, costumes to wigs – comes together nicely to make my portrayal of whichever character I’m playing, perfect!

For the Lo e of Durians !Consistently rated and recognised as some of the most honest durian sellers in Singapore, Mr and Mrs Chia have been dealing with the thorny fruit together for almost 50 years! They met at 18 (he worked for her dad selling durians), fell in love, and married six years later. We talk about all things durian at their little shop in Pasir Ris.

Many Singaporeans shy away from durians that have cracks or are slightly opened. Durians taste best if left to fall by themselves after ripening. As such, some are bound to have cracks and tears in the husk. It doesn’t mean the durian is spoilt or is of low quality.

From Waterloo Street to Pasir Ris

I moved my residence to Pasir Ris in 1995 and decided to open my business here as well as rent was starting to climb in the city. Also because the old business was operated at a pasar malam, there were numerous complaints about noise from residents living nearby so we had to relocate.

The durian season came early in February this year because of unexpected dry weather. Durians require a period of dry weather to cultivate. It normally starts around June/ July but until now some trees still haven’t flowered yet due to heavy rainfall. The next upcoming season this year will likely be in September/ October. However, only a small harvest is expected so prices will likely remain high.

Uncertain Weather = Topsy

Turvy Durian Seasons

In the past, durians were a lot cheaper and families were larger. We used to sell them “lelong” style; meaning customers would pay for a bag and they would cram as much durians as they can into it! Now that families are smaller, customers

don’t mind paying a higher price for just a few high quality durians instead. Also,

during times like football season, patronage would drop by quite a fair bit. There was once where we even sold durians at 50 cents each to attract customers.

Durian Trends

However, Their Most

XO. It’s characterised by being primarily bitter. In fact, 8 in 10 of my customers prefer bitter durians over sweet ones. However, due to poorer harvest this season with stock mostly coming just from Pahang, only sweeter varieties like D24 and Mao Shan Wang durians are readily available in good quality.

An NRP Public Consultation session was organised to introduce to residents the proposed improvements to be made to their precinct. Of the various changes, one exciting feature they can look forward to is the upgrading of the electrical load that will boost the supply of electricity to each household. This NRP will also include scopes of work such as the refurbishment of bin compounds and re-painting works. Residents who attended gave their preliminary feedback on the plans, with over 50% indicating their support for NRP. The next phase – the Consensus Gathering – will showcase the revised plans after considering the feedback of the residents.

GOOD NEWS! Chef Thomas Lam and his beer-inspired creations have been found!

Last seen at Marina Country Club, Streets of London has been rediscovered at Katong Point Mall.

In a good way, it seems like nothing much has changed. Their antique telephone booth still greets customers at the door. The restaurant continues to command stellar reviews on HungryGoWhere (4.4/5 if you’re curious). The best part: they’re still serving really Good Food at Affordable Pricing.

When you’re there, you have to try their signature Indian Pale Ale (IPA) Chicken, IPA Baby Back Ribs, Shepherd Double Stout Lamb Shank and Beer Battered Fish & Chips. These classics have rightfully earned their place as crowd favourites, and continue to be Chef Lam’s magnum opuses!

Last May, I set off on an adventure of a lifetime with my new neighbour, Kevin, and two mutual friends to the United States of America - the Land of the Free. While traversing the East Coast, we took a detour to Ontario, Canada. There, we visited the world-renowned Niagara Falls, which straddles the United States-Canada border. On day one, we drove across the Rainbow Bridge towards the Canadian side of the Falls by car after a short flight to Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Immigration was simple and efficient, similar to crossing the causeway/ 2nd link into Johor from Singapore. The views were breathtaking, from crossing the Bridge all the way to checking into our room at Embassy Suites Hotel. They were so spectacular we could have stayed in all day and just chilled out. However, our adventurous spirit got the better of us and we ended up walking to Niagara Parkway and its vantage points to appreciate the Falls in all its natural splendour. The second day was the real highlight of our trip. We started the day off with the “Journey Behind the Falls” tour, which took us on an adventure deep below and into the heart of the Falls. There, we stood in the misty wake of the mighty Horseshoe Falls tumbling from 13 storeys above! Next, we took a cruise ride directly into the falls. Although completely drenched, we managed to experience the mighty Niagara Falls up close and personal.

Contributed by: Joey Lee (Punggol Coast)

Travel

Literally ending our visit on a high note, we then took a helicopter ride into the skies, which gave us a completely new perspective of the cascading Falls whose beauty is further accentuated from above. The day concluded with a visit to the Skylon Tower Revolving Restaurant, where we enjoyed a scrumptious meal & a panoramic 360-degree view of the surroundings. With some time on our hands, we decided to try out some authentic Canadian delicacies. A must-try is the Poutine, a French-Canadian dish traditionally made of French fries and fresh cheese curds, covered with gravy. A source of national pride for the Canadians, it is to Canada what Chicken Rice is to Singapore! Our parting dinner took us to the famous Keg Steakhouse at our hotel, where we enjoyed our meals while taking in a stupendous night view of the Falls, complete with a stunning fireworks display. This fantastic dining experience is a MUST-TRY!

Niagara Falls is definitely a worthwhile detour for those planning a trip to the state of New York. Should you go there for your next holiday, you’ll surely be enthralled!

Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

BACK TO SCHOOLAfter working as a retail staff at a trading firm for close to 10 years, Mdm Nora wanted to do something different. She went to seek assistance at the Meet-the-People session and was referred to Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for employment assistance.

Aged 54 and staying with her 72-year-old mother and 18-year-old son in Punggol, Mdm Nora was looking for an administrative job near her residence, preferably in a school environment. However, there were no such vacancies matching her criteria at that point of time. Our Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. staff quickly figured out a solution for her – while she looked for permanent employment, she could, in the meantime, work under the Community Employment Programme – Employment Assistance (CEP – EA), a 6-month interim employment programme. Mdm Nora took up that offer because it allowed her to fetch some income whilst seeking long-term employment. While she worked as a Mobile Library Assistant, she also worked closely with Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to prepare her resume and dutifully attended job interviews at recruitment fairs. After a few months of interviewing with no luck, Mdm Nora’s morale began to drop but our staff continued to encourage her. Putting in more effort and time at recruitment fairs organised by Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Mdm Nora finally found a job she loves.

Mdm Nora is now working happily at Greendale Primary as a laboratory assistant. She likes the environment and enjoys mixing with the students.

“I’ll treasure this job because it didn’t come easy for me,” said Mdm Nora. “Although it’s a challenge for me to be doing something totally different, I will do my best to adapt the work assigned.”

One more perk?

“The food! It’s affordable and healthy!”
