LANCE CPL. NICHOLAS M. DUNN COMBAT CORRESPONDENT Whenever a unit leaves or returns from a deployment, support for them comes in a variety of ways, and is aimed at taking care of them and boost- ing their morale. The Veterans of Foreign Wars take each deployment to heart by providing deploying and returning units with invaluable support. The VFW provides refresh- ments, phones and internet service to the units from every branch of the armed forces traveling through March Air Reserve Base, Calif. There are a total of 50 cellular phones and six laptop computers with internet available for the troops at March ARB. “These guys are never far from our hearts,” said Jim Kokas, military assistance director for the California VFW. “The VFW’s been where they’ve been. We’ll be here until the last man comes home.” “Some of these volunteers drive a long way to be here for these guys,” he added. The VFW works hand-in- hand with March ARB to pro- vide these services to the troops. A chance for them to relax, grab a bite to eat and communicate with loved ones is something the VFW knows is important for morale. Laura Froelich, family sup- port volunteer coordinator at March ARB, is in charge of coordinating the support efforts there and raises funding for the program through the Military Affairs Committee of the Moreno Valley Chamber of Commerce. She said she start- ed the program for personal reasons. “When my father came back from Vietnam in the 1970s, he was spat on,” she said. “I decided that in my cor- ner of the world, where I have control, no one would ever feel the way he did again.” “I’ve been doing this for five years,” added Froelich. “Since the start of the war, I think I’ve only missed five homecomings.” Froelich has been working at March ARB for 21 years. She started a similar program during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Last week, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, returned from a seven-month deploy- ment to Iraq. As usual, Froelich and the VFW volun- teers were there to greet them when they stepped off the planes at March ARB. “I’m real appreciative of the people who come out and sup- port us,” said 1st Sgt. NICHOLAS M. DUNN COMBAT CORRESPONDENT The date was Nov. 19. I arrive at the Combat Center Fire Department at 7:30 a.m. I’m greeted by several fire- fighters as I enter the garage. I’ve worked with some of the firefighters in the past regarding other stories I’ve published. Firefighter Brent Gregory shows me to the bunkhouse. He’s not working today, so I’ll be staying in his living space tonight. I put my stuff down and rejoin the crew. Now, its 8 a.m. and time for the oncoming crew’s morning muster. I join them in the lounge for their morn- ing briefing from Assistant Fire Chief Kevin P. Mathieu. After detailing the plan of the day, Mathieu introduces me to the crew. Knowing that printing a firefighter’s picture in the paper will cost him a gallon of ice cream, I’m rela- tively nervous to be spending the next 24 hours with these guys. Fortunately for me, they’re a friendly group. As soon as the muster ends, the crew boards the vehicles and heads to the CCFD training area on Del Valle Road. Today, they’re going to be conducting an obstacle course wearing haz- ardous material suits. First to suit up and complete the course is Fire Captain Dennis Fleming. Fleming gets through the course with relative ease, although the insulation inside the HAZMAT suit has him drenched in sweat. The out- come was similar for the other firefighters who went through the course. After the course, I go to lunch at Desert Winds Golf Course with some of the guys. The hot topic is sports, primarily football, which I know little about. I’m a base- ball fan. One of the guys, Firefighter Patrick Perez, hap- pens to be a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. This worked out great for me. I’ve loved that team my whole life. We talk about how awesome the Sox played this year and what we hope to see from them next season. The afternoon was spent cleaning up the gear from the HAZMAT obstacle course. The suits were washed, and the rest of the gear was cleaned and reorganized. I helped out as much as I could, but with everyone else hard at work, there wasn’t a lot left for me to do. Dinner was a real treat. Every night, one or more members of the crew cook dinner for everyone else. Tonight, Fleming was sched- uled to cook. He prepared a delicious pork roast, mashed potatoes, corn and salad. We also had some store-bought Hawaiian sweet rolls that were really good. “Dinner is a tradition,” said Firefighter Jason Swift. “We cook together, we eat togeth- er, we fight fires together – this is a brotherhood.” At dinner, the crew swapped anecdotes and talked about work. It had been a slow day. Not a single call so far. They all told me this time of year was really slow. They get a lot more calls during the summer. Everyone sat around and relaxed after dinner. By now, I had broken out of my natural shyness and started striking up conversation with the crew. They told me a lot about their past experiences as fire- fighters. Larcenies have always been a big problem across the U.S. There has been an increasing prob-lem of thefts aboard the base and especially in the barracks, which is an issue we have tostrongly look at and find a way to address.

Here are the stats on how many larcenies we have had broken down by individual units inthe barracks aboard MCAGCC:

Out of the 79 larcenies, almost all of them could have been prevented or been a lot easierto solve if the person who had their property stolen would have secured the items properly, kept receipts of the merchandise or marked or engraved their property with a property mark-ing for identification purposes. Also ensure that you write down and keep a record of all seri-al numbers and other identifiers of high dollar or sentimental merchandise and keep that listin a secure location. Most pawn shops will not take property that has property engraving mark-ings on them.

The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4, 2008and is approaching fast. Exercising your right to vote isan important part of being a responsible citizen.

As Marines, you have been fighting to ensure others have thesame opportunities as you to elect your senior leaders. To vote, you must be properly registered. Now is the time for all eligiblevoters to ensure you are properly registered for the upcomingelections.

If you will be assigned or deployed outside of your homestate, to vote in the primary or general election you and youraccompanying family members must properly complete andsubmit a federal post card application (FPCA). The FPCA is theDepartment of Defense voting registration form that is accept-ed by all 50 states and its territories.

The FPCA allows you to: (1) register to vote in your state oflegal residence, (2) change your mailing address with your stateof legal residence and (3) request an absentee ballot. In order toensure sufficient time for processing by your state, it is recom-mended that your FPCA be mailed 30-45 days prior to the dateof the state election. If your state is one of those scheduled tohave their primary election in January 2008, you should completeyour FPCA now.

Your unit voting assistance officer is ready to assist you andyour family members in completing the FPCA. Your UVAO canalso be of great assistance in obtaining election information.Another source of information is the Marine Corps voting webpage located at www.manpower.usmc.mil/voting.

Following is the schedule for upcoming presidential and stateprimaries as we currently know them.

HADITHA, Iraq – It may beimpossible to predict history asit is happening, but some ofthe battles fought in Iraq arecertain to become legendary.Generations from now, schoolchildren will learn of theheroes who fought in Fallujahand Ramadi, battling inextreme conditions when theircountry needed them most.Haditha, another Anbar cityonce caught in the grip of yes-terday’s violence, is nowbecoming a city of progressand transition.

Without question, Hadithais known for its fierce battles. Many have given their lives inan attempt to reclaim peace inthis northern area of theprovince. It was in this city thatsix Marines were killed in anambush during 2005. Dayslater, 14 Marines died when

their armored vehicle wasstruck by a roadside bomb. The city was a hotbed for ter-rorists where Marines con-fronted their enemy in thestreets, houses and farm lands. But, if there was ever a placethat could paint the picture ofthe progress being made inAnbar, it’s here.

A battalion of more than1,000 Marines recently movedinto Haditha. Most of themare reservists from NewOrleans’ 3rd Battalion, 23rdMarine Regiment. Others areattachments from Houston’s1st Bn., 23rd Marines, or activeduty Marines from variouscommands throughout theMarine Corps. Regardless ofwhere they came or their sta-tus, their mission is clear.

“The main effort now iscontinuing to train the Iraqisecurity forces so we can tran-sition into Iraqi control,” saidLt. Col. Kevin Jarrard,Company L commander.

Many parts of Anbar havealready seen the transfer ofcommand from coalition forcesto Iraqi Army forces. Recently, the 7th Iraqi Army Division, thenewest division in Iraq, tookcontrol of their area of opera-tions, which includes Haditha.Marines here are getting readyto slow down operations and

assist their Iraqi counterparts. This is the focus for much ofthe Marines in Iraq. The days ofhouse-to-house fighting seemsto be a part of Anbar’s past, making deployments of todaymuch different from those justlast year.

“A year ago, we were fight-ing in the streets every day,

(evacuating) Marines who werewounded in action,” saidJarrard. “Now, the Marinespatrol the streets and the peo-ple are talking about problems, which are nice problems tohave. ‘Hey, can we get theroads paved,’ it sounds kind oflike our neighborhoods backhome. The problems are prob-lems that every city has in theworld. They’re not the prob-lems of a city in the midst of acivil war.”

Haditha is located on thewestern edge of the EuphratesRiver, covered in palm treesand flat, green pastures. Morethan 70, 000 Iraqis call this cityhome. These days, it looks andfeels like any other city; peoplehere travel by taxi, walk themarkets at dusk, cheer at localsoccer matches on weekendsand play in school yards duringthe day. The landscape is every-thing but a chaotic battlefield.

The problems no longer liein the shadows or in suspiciousvehicles, but rather in rebuild-ing mosques, getting thetownspeople comfortable withtheir policemen, making surefresh water runs to each home, turning a city devastated bybombs and bullets into a liv-able community for the peoplehere. “It’s not the normal kindof combat operations,” said 1stLt. Steven Dobb, the 1st pla-toon commander forCompany L. “It’s more of apeacekeeping role almost, because the insurgency is not

here anymore and what we aretrying to do now is build acommunity.”

Dobb’s platoon patrols thenorthern end of the city, nearthe dam. His Marines walk thewinding streets of Haditha’sneighborhoods every day. Theymeet with locals, hand out sup-plies and get the Iraqi policecomfortable with citizens ofdifferent tribes. The communi-ty is growing and the progress

is easy to see.“The people here are trying

to turn it around,” said LanceCpl. Michael Mathes, infantry-man, 1st platoon, Company L.“Every day we come out hereon patrol, we see them eithertrying to rebuild the streets orthe sewer lines. They alwayshave some kind of project

going on to try and better thisplace.”

The most evident sign ofstability here lies just south of1st platoon’s outpost and thenewly opened water treatmentplant. Construction workerscontinuously move earth, swing hammers and lay rock, fashioning a neighborhood forHaditha’s newest residents.

“With all the rebuildinggoing on south of us, it looks

like the people want to keepthe security up, want to keepthis a safe place,” said Dobb.“They feel safe enough tobring their families here andthey’re investing a lot ofmoney into this place.”

It is not easy to understandhow far Haditha has comeunless its past is understood. The sounds of bombs andmortars have been replaced bycar horns and school children. The images of modern homesand open-air markets havereplaced bullet holes andexploding vehicles. This is whythe Marines came and why theyare still here.

“I think all of the Marineslook at the progress that isbeing made and feel like they’rean important part of the futureof Iraq,” Jarrard said. “Peaceand security equals prosperityfor these people, and in anextended way the prosperity ofIraq equals security forAmerica. The parents of theseMarines should be proud ofthese Marines and the jobthey’re doing.”

convincing me further.“This job is really enjoy-

able,” said Firefighter JamesHull. “It’s great to have to workhard and get to know your peo-ple. Getting to know the crewsis probably the best part of thejob. You really get close.”

Not one of the firefightersI’ve met so far has had any-thing negative to say abouttheir job and the lifestyle thatcomes with it.

“I’ve been doing this foreight years and I’ve been withCenter Fire for five,” saidSwift. “It’s almost sad to col-lect a paycheck for this. Idon’t see it as a job; I see it asa privilege.”

“It’s all based on cama-raderie,” he added. “It’s feelslike an extension of your per-sonal family. When you thinkabout it, you end up spendinghalf your life with the guys onyour crew.”

As we sat in the loungetalking, an emergency medicalservices call came through tothe dispatch. Within two min-utes of the call, the crews ofTruck and Medic Ambulance451 were departing the fire-house for Felix Field.

Three minutes after theresponse, the two vehiclesarrived at Felix Field.Immediately, the two emer-gency medical techniciansfrom the ambulance rushedover to the injured person. After treating the patient on-scene for a non-life threaten-ing injury, they loaded himinto the ambulance and trans-ported him to the Robert E.

Bush Naval Hospital.Once the patient arrived at

the emergency room, theresponders took care of thenecessary paperwork and alsotook the time to restock theambulance with medical sup-plies. Then, they went back tothe firehouse. I always knewfirefighters could get to a callquickly, but the speed, knowl-edge and professionalismthey displayed that night wereastounding.

Once we were back at thefirehouse, a few of us satdown and talked more aboutthe job. By now, they knowI’m taking a lot of interest inthe job and are more thanhappy to answer my questions. After a few hours of that, weall went to get some rest.

At 6:30 a.m., everyonewakes up to prepare for theoncoming shift. The firefight-ers take time for personalhygiene. Then, the crewcleans up the house and thevehicles. The oncoming crewstarts to trickle in around 7:30a.m. Some of the guys Ialready knew ask me how myride-along went.

Although relatively slow, the shift I was on board forwas a great experience. I hadthe rare opportunity to setfoot in Center Fire’s shoes.Through the experience, Ipicked up on a lot about theday-to-day life of a firefighterand even learned a thing ortwo about the job itself bytalking to the people who doit every day. Even though I’mnot a firefighter, I feel asthough a lot of them consid-er me to be “one of the guys.”

Toys for Tots moves on with HQBN Walk/Run Toy Drive

Children participating in theOperation Hero program graduatedfrom the 10-week course Wednesdayat Condor Elementary School.

The children can enroll in KidsCare Club, after completing theOperation Hero program.

“They have to complete OperationHero to get into Kids Care Club,” saidAnita Neu-Fultz, executive director ofthe Armed Services YMCA.

The course is designed for childrenin second through sixth grade whohave difficulty adjusting to school. The program is available at everyASYMCA across the nation for allmilitary children.

The difficulty is normally connect-ed to the arrival of a new duty station, recent deployments of their parents, and the highly demanding militarylifestyle.

The program started with MeMyself and I, a beginning classdesigned to bring the instructors andchildren together on a trusting, friend-ship level.

“At first they were shy to speak tous,” said Rita Mayes, Operation Heroprogram coordinator. “Then we saw abig difference in each child, they start-

ed asking questions about every-thing.”

After Me Myself and I, the chil-dren were taught about family, friends, responsibility, emotions and bullyingduring Circle Time.

Circle Time gives the children achance to participate in discussionsand role-playing activities dealing withcharacter development, non-violentways to deal with bullies, anger con-trol, conflict resolution, goal setting, being a good friend, respecting others, making right choices, good habits anddeveloping strengths and understand-ing weaknesses.

The children are also able to letloose, especially during NickelodeonNight, when children were drenchedwith chocolate syrup and whippedcream.

Neu-Fultz explained that althoughNickelodeon Night is extremely messyit is important for the children to havefun, especially when parents aredeployed. Operation Hero also helpschildren share their feelings abouttheir parents deploying, and their con-stant moving around the world.

“They had a lot of big questionsabout why they have to move a lot,”said Mayes. “We explained to themmoving is part of being a military childand they have the opportunity to getout and explore the world. When they

realized that it really opened them up.”The first hour of Operation Hero

is spent doing homework and inde-pendent reading.

“They look forward to coming tothe classes,” explained Neu-Fultz.“Children were asking to do theirhomework.”

The children also participated inart projects and games that focusedon specific academic skills such asspelling and math.

“I think it was so fun,” saidCharlie Mitteff, a 10-year-oldOperation Hero graduate. “I wishit would last forever. I wish it was

never ending.”Mitteff, along with many other

children who graduated fromOperation Hero will continue on toKids Care Club.

“I would like to go to Kids CareClub,” said Mitteff. “It is more aboutkids and the community.”

The Military Family Act of1985 helped establish theFamily Member EmploymentAssistance Program to assistmilitary spouses and familymembers over the age of 16with employment issues.

FMEAP teaches familymembers resume writing, jobinterview techniques andpreparation for an interview, federal application informa-tion and federal employmentopportunities.

“I understand the difficultyjob seekers could potentiallyface,” said Joanne Ferraro, employment development sec-tion, Marine Corps CommunityServices Career ResourceOffice. “What we try to do isencourage job seekers tothink outside the box and cre-atively.”

Advantages family mem-bers receive from usingFMEAP are learning aboutcurrent labor market, averagesalary and wage trends in localareas.

Job seekers are given tipson what to wear to an inter-view, and questions they

should ask during an inter-view.

Volunteering at the careerresource office can also assistfamily members gain skills inan office setting such asanswering phones, helpingwith paper work and using acomputer, which can later beput on their resume.

“People who don’t have alot of job skills or want tohone their job skills or theyare not finding a job can vol-unteer with us,” said Ferraro.“They get a wonderful expe-rience.”

FMEAP also offers a pro-gram called Microsoft OfficeSpecialist CertificationProgram, which provides indi-viduals with the training theyneed to be certified in one ormore of Microsoft Office®desktop applications.

According to a MOSCertification Program pam-phlet, individuals who earnthe certificate are acknowl-edged in the skills to workwith Microsoft Office® pro-grams.

MOS certified individualsreport an increase in proficien-cy and productivity withemployers, co-workers andclients.

Becoming MOS certifiedcan also be put in a resume toassist job seekers.

“We encourage our clientsand spouses to take advantageof the MOS program,” saidFerraro. “Your job marketand earning ability goes updramatically.”

CRO representatives helpindividuals prepare for inter-views by holding a mock inter-view, where they will give fam-ily members tips on how toconduct an efficient interviewand build confidence.

“We work one-on-one withthem because everyone is differ-ent,” said Ferraro. “Everyonehas different experiences, education, and wants anddesires, working one-on-onewill help us help them achievethat.”

Virginia Sulick, CareerResource Manager, saidFMEAP representatives stillhear from some clients thathad received assistance fromFMEAP that have moved onto other military installations.

“It is an awesome pro-gram,” said Sulick.

CRO representatives loveto see the families reap thebenefits and awards from thehard work of those involved.

FMEAP helps militarymembers, spouses get jobs

The donations to Toys forTots have purchased 3,000toys in the past two weeks andwill continue to go towardstoys at the Wal-Mart shoppingtrip Monday.

The Marine CorpsExchange has raised $9,600 inSanta Silver donations to beused for the Toys for Toysshopping trip there Tuesday.
