Often counseling can be arranged in the family’s home or where the family feels the most comfortable. THEY UNDERSTAND and will do all they can to assist you in finding the most direct way to contact the nearest qualified center, where understanding staff is waiting to help.

Concealed Handgun Application Permit

If you wore any uniform in any branch of the U.S. Military, you can be authorized to carry a concealed handgun without completing any course. It does not matter what state you live in or how long you have been discharged. You only have to be able to complete the following: pass a criminal background investigation, supply a copy of your DD-214 showing you were discharged under “honorable” status, and pay a license fee at your county/city courthouse. The SSVF Program provides Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Services to Veterans and their families. These supportive services include case management, temporary financial assistance, and assistance in obtaining and coordination VA and other public benefits.

Tips to Getting Your Discounts:

If you are retired from the military or active, no matter what restaurant / business you

choose, even if it’s not on the list here, ask if they offer a military discount as some do

but don’t advertise the discount.

Always bring your military identification card as some restaurants may ask for it as proof

you are a retired veteran or active in the military. Military discounts are for all branches

of service including the Coast Guard and Reserves.

Make sure you inquire if the discount is for you only or can it be used for your entire

dining party. Some restaurants only allow for the retiree or active military person to

receive the discount.

The MyCAA Scholarship is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses. Montgomery GI Bill – A program for service members who enlisted for the first time after June 30, 1985, and had military pay reduced by $100 a month for the first 12 months of service, continuously served for three years (or two years if that was the enlistment agreement) or if entered the Selected Reserve within a year of leaving active duty and continuously served for four years (the 2 by 4 program). Post 9/11 – For service members who served on active duty for at least 90 days, whether continuous or interrupted, after September 10, 2001, and meet the basic requirement for any GI Bill program. Post 9/11 is also transferable to spouses and dependents. Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Subsistence Allowance – A program for service members and veterans with service-connected physical or mental disabilities. Some of the services and benefits include evaluation of your abilities and skills, educational, vocational, and personal counseling, education and training to qualify veterans for suitable employment, financial assistance while training, medical and dental treatment, and employment counseling, career planning, and job placement. Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserves – Members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, the Army National Guard, and the Air Guard are eligible for MGIB-SR (chapter 1606). The Reserve and Guard components decide who is eligible for the program. Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) – REAP provides educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency declared by the president or Congress.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits (continued)

The Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) – The Survivors and Dependents Assistance program offers education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition or of Veterans who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition. The ending date for DEA benefits for dependents is generally the 26th birthday. For more GI Bill Educational Benefits Information and to Apply go to the website www.gibill.va.gov. The Fry Scholarship – The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship) is available to the children (may use the benefit until their 33rd birthday) and surviving spouses of service members who die in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. It currently pays a benefit equal to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Beneficiaries attending school may receive up to their full tuition and fees for a public school or a statutory annual maximum amount for a private school, plus a monthly living stipend and book allowance.

Virginia Military Survivor & Dependent Education Program (VMSDEP)

Provides benefits for four academic years to spouses and children (ages 16 to 29) of Virginia military members killed, missing in action, taken prisoner, or who became 90 percent disabled as a result of a military armed conflict and meets other eligibility criteria. In Accordance With Public Law 110-181 SEC.598; the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and "in conducting the commemorative program, the Secretary shall coordinate, support, and facilitate other programs and activities of the Federal Government, State and local governments, and other persons and organizations in commemoration of the Vietnam War." The main buildup of American forces in Vietnam began in 1965. However, Obama has proclaimed the 13-year time frame, from May 2012 to November 2025, as the war’s official 50th anniversary commemoration period. **********************************************************

**************************************************************************************************** VETERANS DAY 2015 Events: Veterans Day Luncheon was held for our student military and veterans. Sponsored a Veterans Day Honor Wall, “Share a Story of Your Hero”. We collected and shared true personal stories and pictures of military family and friends who proudly served our great nation. A Veterans Day Program was held on November 11th at the clock in the VHCC’s Commons Area. The Student Veterans Association held a dedication for the Student Veterans Tribute which was sponsored and funded by the SVA.

**************************************************************************************************** VIETNAM VETERANS SPEAKERS: The SVA arranged for the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 979 from Kingsport, Tennessee to speak about their experiences to the Virginia Highlands Community College students, faculty and staff.

**************************************************************************************************** SPECIAL VETERANS PARKING PERMITS: The College now issues Special Veterans Parking Permits for two prime parking areas.

**************************************************************************************************** STUDENT VETERANS ASSOCIATION: Met with Virginia’s Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs John H. Harvey concerning veterans’ educational issues. The VHCC Student Veterans Association, a member of the national Student Veterans of America, attended Student Veterans of America meetings held at Norfolk and Roanoke. The VHCC SVA attended the Tennessee Military Affairs Council meeting in Gray, Tennessee, which focuses on local businesses serving veterans’ needs. The VHCC SVA attended and spoke at a Virginia Military and Community Connections meeting in Bristol, Virginia.
