ScopeandContentoftheCollectionThiscollectionofcardsdatingfrom1849to1910wasgiventhetitle‘ValentineCards’butincludescardsforotheroccasions,mostnotablyChristmasandBirthdaycards,andoneormoremiscellaneous


cardssuchasbookmarks,placecards,anadvertisingcardandseveralemptyenvelopes.ItalsocontainedaJuniorCommencementin1849,aweddinginvitationin1884,adancecard,andschoolgradecards,whichhaveallbeenremoved.ManyofthecardsweredonatedduringaperiodattheCAMwhenformalacquisitionnumberswerenotalwaysassigned.Tracingtheunnumberedacquisitionsisdifficult,ifnotimpossible.Thismadeitnecessarytoorganizethecollection“artificially”i.e.inanarrangementotherthanthatbywhichthecollectionswerereceived.Allidentifiableaccessionsarelistedwiththecontainerlist.ThenameHildaHansonappearsinalargenumberofvalentinesbuttheactualdonorisunknown.Thevalentines,whichconstitutethelargestpartofthecollection,aredividedintothreesubseries:mid19thtoearly20thcentury,late19thtoearly20thcentury,andearly20thcentury.Thecollectionrangesfromveryelaborate–acelluloidandfabriccard,cardswithsilkfringes,boxcardsandcutpaperfoldoutcards–totheverysimplehandmadecard.Anyoutstandingfeaturesarenotedinthecontainerlist.Thecardsareidentifiedbyeitherawordorphrasefromthefrontofthecard,e.g.Purity;orbythetitleofthefirstlineoftheversefrominsidethecard.Familymembersandclassmatesgavemostofthecardstothechildrenofmiddle-classfamiliesinGloucester;othersareobscure.Forinstance,neitherofWillieWebsterBallard’sparentswerefromGloucester,nordidtheyapparentlyeverliveinGloucester.Therearetwoappendices:IAlistofvalentinemanufacturers;IIAlistofnamesofrecipients,whereafullnamewasgiven.
