Al Sayah island is “man-made”, British archaeologists confirm

New findings throw light into the engineering prowess of the ancient people of Bahrain

• The earlier belief was that the island was natural

• Finds a room for pumping water

• The island was also part of pearl trade

TDT | Manama

It’s ‘man-made’ and creat-ed in the middle of the Sea around a freshwater spring

at least 1,200 years ago.The remarkable finding that

throws light deeper into the his-tory of Muharraq were from a team holding excavations and archaeological surveys there on the historic Al Sayah Island.

Contradicting the previous beliefs, Dr Salman Al-Mahari, the Director of the Department of Museums and Antiquities at the Culture Authority, points out that the island was not natural.

The earlier belief was that the island was the aftereffect of some natural phenomenon.

However, the new ‘unexpect-ed’ finding now opens doors into the remarkable engineering prowess of the ancient people of Bahrain.

The historic Al Saya Island, lo-cated off the coast of Busaiteen, is thus proving to be a treasure trove of Muharraq’s ancient his-tory.

Bahrain began protecting the island, which almost dis-appeared, by registering on the National Heritage List.

Excavations and archaeologi-cal surveys began on the island at the end of last January in co-operation with a British team from the University of Exeter and Southampton University headed by Professor Robert Carter.

According to Dr Al Mahari, the island is one of the oldest examples of sea filling practices.

Studies also prove that Al Sayah played a crucial role in the pearling history of Bahrain, which was also well known for its freshwater springs.

These springs were known

locally as Kawkab or Chochab. One of the examples is Ain Al

Saya, which had an important place in the memory of the peo-ple of Muharraq and Busaiteen.

“Preliminary results of the excavation show that the Island was a water supply station dat-ing back to the early Islamic era,” said Professor Robert Carter, head of the team.

“Or, perhaps before that.”“It also had a big role in the

pearling profession in Bahrain for more than 1200 years.”

Carter also explained the technique used for building the island.

“For this, they first created a cistern or a water reservoir around the spring to contain

fresh water emerging from the rocky seafloor.

“They created a thick circular wall around that to form a small island of fewer than 20 meters wide.

“Then later, it was fortified by creating another curved wall to form an island of about 40 me-

t e r s wide.

“ F i n a l -ly, they creat-

ed straight walls on the south and east side of the is-land, which intersected with each other to form rectangular cabins.

“They also used large coral blocks to create a platform of the island that was more than 60 meters in length from one end to the other.”

The excavation also led to a small building next to the spring with a mechanism for raising water.

“So that freshwater can be drawn continuously and dis-tributed to boats anchored along the quay.”

Old piles of pearl oysters mixed with pottery from the seventh to eighth centuries AD (2nd and 3rd centuries AH) cov-er most parts of the island.

“For this reason, it is believed that the island was a facility for pearl fishing in the past .”

The joint team explored fresh-water springs in Bu Maher and Khor Fasht, using underwa-ter surveying tools and diving equipment.

“This is the first systemat-ic exploration of marine and underwater archaeology in Bahrain, and we hope that the project will lead to important discoveries in the future,” said Al Mahari.

According to Dr Al Maha-ri, the island is one of the

oldest examples of sea filling practices.

Preliminary results of the excavation show that the Island was a water supply station

dating back to the early Islamic era

Bahrain plans new guidelines for urban and civic spaces

Tender launched for desktop study on sustainable landscape design guidelines for Brown landscapingTDT | Manama

Bahrain plans to introduce new guidelines for de-signing urban and civic

The board is currently doing a technical evaluation of the bids opened on Thursday.

Bahrain is renowned for its verdant groves of date palms. Since ancient times it has been an entrepot for trade and a source of natural resources for the surrounding area. Bahrain is

widely believed to be the site of the ancient kingdom of Dilmun, a commercial centre that traded with ancient Sumer.

The Kingdom features an arid climate and has two seasons: extremely hot summer and a relatively mild winter. During the summer months, from April to October, afternoon tempera-tures average 40 °C (104 °F) and can reach 46 °C (114.8 °F) during May, June and July.

KNOW WHAT

The world-famous 18th-century landscape gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was renowned for his ability to transform unpromising countryside into beautiful parks that seemed to be only the work of Dame Nature.

His naturalistic designs hid the huge amount of manpower that went into shaping these picturesque estates. Whole villages were moved, trickling streams transformed into lakes and entire valleys moulded from scratch.

‘Capability’ Brown changed the face of the English landscape. Instead of previously-fashionable formal designs, he set out instead natural-looking open sweeps of parkland and swooping lines of lakes and rivers.

Lebanon blocks banned Bahrain group’s events in BeirutTDT | agencies

Le b a n o n   o n T h u r s d a y banned Bahraini groups

from holding two events in Beirut.

Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said he was can-celling events organised by banned Bahraini  figures that were due to take place on Fri-day and Monday.

“If these two events were to take place, they would un-dermine official Bahraini au-thorities and Gulf Arab states, thus blocking efforts by Leb-anon to boost ties with these countries,” Mawlawi said in a statement carried by Leba-non’s National News Agency.

He did not specify which groups had organised the events.

Mawlawi said the events had been scheduled to take place at a hotel near Beirut Airport in the capital’s southern suburbs – a stronghold of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

In December, Lebanon or-

dered one of the country’s security agencies to deport non-Lebanese members of Al Wefaq.

The order came after Al We-faq held a news conference in Beirut on December 11.

Bahrain’s judiciary dissolved Al Wefaq, which has close ties to Hezbollah, in July 2016 for “harbouring terrorism”.

Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al Sabah, Kuwait’s Foreign Min-ister, visited Beirut last month and presented a list of propos-als aimed at healing the rift between Lebanon and several GCC countries.

Saudi and UAE could ease oil market volatility, IEA saysReuters | London

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could help to calm oil markets if

they pumped more crude, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said yesterday, but prices rose after the watchdog high-lighted deepening risks of vol-atility.

Brent crude oil futures bounced back to near sev-en-year highs and hit a session peak of $92.75 a barrel after the Paris-based agency reported tight global supply and spare production capacity.

“These risks, which have broad economic implications, could be reduced if producers in the Middle East with spare capacity were to compensate for those running out,” the Paris-based agency said in its monthly oil report.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are the two oil producers with the most spare production capacity.

“Oil prices are rallying once more as the IEA raised forecasts

for demand this year and con-firmed that OPEC+ missed its output targets again in January and by an even wider margin,” said Craig Erlam, senior market

analyst at OANDA.The IEA said if OPEC+ - the

Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries members and allies like Russia - unwind their current output cuts com-pletely, they could add 4.3 mil-lion barrels per day (bpd) back into the market.

However, the IEA said that would slash effective spare ca-pacity to 2.5 million bpd by the end of the year, held up almost entirely by Saudi Arabia and, to a lesser extent, the UAE.

For now, while OPEC+ is rais-ing output each month, it is not hitting its monthly target of

400,000 extra barrels per day. The IEA said in January the gap between output and the target widened to 900,000 bpd.

The bloc’s prolonged under-performance has effectively taken 300 million barrels, or 800,000 bpd, off the market since the start of 2021,” the IEA said.

A successful outcome to international talks with Iran could lift U.S. sanctions on the country’s exports and relieve supply tightness, the IEA added, gradually bringing 1.3 million bpd of Iranian oil back into the market.

Supply and demand look set to be balanced in the first quar-ter but are expected to flip into a surplus in the second quarter or second half of the year, the IEA added.

The need to refill depleted oil stocks, which in OECD coun-tries fell by 60 million barrels in December down to seven-year lows, means immediate over-supply is unlikely.

ADQ-backed digital bank gets UAE central bank approval for launch

Reuters | Dubai

The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates has

given in-principle approval to a new digital banking plat-form, backed by state holding company ADQ, to launch op-erations, ADQ said yesterday.

The move comes after a ne-obank backed by Dubai-based YAP, the first independent dig-ital banking platform in the UAE, was launched last year.

Some UAE banks have in recent years launched their own digital banking offerings targeted at digitally-savvy and younger users, such as LIV by Emirates NBD and Mashreq

Neo by Mashreq Bank.ADQ and investment hold-

ing company Alpha Dhabi (ALPHADHABI.AD) will own a combined 65% stake in the bank called “Wio”.

Other shareholders are UAE’s telecoms operator Eti-lasat (ETISALAT.AD), which will own 25%, and First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB.AD), with a 10% stake, it said.

The total invested capital in Wio is 2.3 billion dirhams ($626.26 million) plus in-kind contribution.

Wio will soon launch a beta version that will initially serve small and medium-sized busi-nesses, ADQ said.

BMW pays $4.2 billion to take control of Chinese JV

• To pay 3.7 bln euros to lift stake to 75% from 50%

• Deal announced in 2018 when China flagged rule change

• Foreign automakers seeking more control in top market

Reuters | Berlin

BMW will pay 3.7 billion euros ($4.2 billion) to take major-

ity control of its Chinese joint venture after securing the nec-essary licence from Beijing, as global automakers seek a tighter grip on business in the world’s biggest car market.

The German carmaker said on Friday it was increasing its stake in the venture with Brilliance Auto Group to 75% from 50%, as announced in 2018 when China said it would start relaxing own-ership rules in the auto industry.

China said at the time it would remove foreign owner-

ship caps for companies making fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2018, for makers of commercial vehicles in 2020, and for the wider car market by 2022.

BMW said the deal would have a one-off positive effect of 7-8 billion euros ($8-9 billion) on the financial results of its au-tomotive business, and boost free cash flow by about 5 billion euros.

“Our extended joint venture contract lays the foundation for further mutual growth and pro-gressive development ... It paves the way for balanced develop-

ment in the three main regions of the world,” Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter said.

BMW was the first automaker to state in October 2018 it would take control of its main joint venture in China, which was founded in 2003 and is current-ly in place until 2040.

BMW expects sales in China to grow into 2022, its CFO has said, after seeing 9% growth in BMW and Mini deliveries last year to 846,237 vehicles. The BMW Brilliance Automotive joint ven-ture produced 700,000 vehicles in 2021.

Based in Shenyang, one plant

in Dadong district is currently being expanded, while a new one that will build fully-elec-tric models alongside hybrids and internal combustion engine cars is also under construction alongside an existing plant in Tiexi. BMW will add produc-tion of its X5 model in China, previously imported from the United States, in the second quarter of the year at the BMW Brilliance joint venture, a U.S. supplier source told Reuters in December.

Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) took majority control of its electric

vehicle production joint venture JAC Volkswagen in 2020.

Mercedes-Benz (DAIGn.DE) owns 49% of its joint venture in China,

Beijing Benz Automotive. In 2019 it was seeking to raise its stake, but faced opposition from its Chinese

partner BAIC.

Intel launches blockchain chip• The chip will ship later this year

Reuters

Intel Corp yesterday launched a new chip for blockchain

applications such as Bitcoin mining and minting NFTs to cash in on the rising usage of cryptocurrencies.

The chip will ship later this year and the first customers in-clude Block Inc (SQ.N), the Jack Dorsey-led firm that recently changed its name from Square Inc to highlight its growing fo-

cus on the blockchain.Blockchains serve as public

ledgers that keep records of transactions on a network of computers and have grown in prominence in recent years. Their rise has also triggered a buzz around words like “Web.3” and “NFTs” that tout the decen-

tralization of technologies.Intel said its chip is an ener-

gy-efficient “accelerator” de-signed to speed up blockchain tasks that require huge amounts of computing power and there-by consume a lot of energy.

Chip designer Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), whose graphics cards are used widely for mining ac-tivities, also has a separate chip meant for Ethereum mining.

As a part of furthering its footprint in the space, Intel has also formed a new segment called Custom Compute Group within its Accelerated Com-puting Systems and Graphics business unit.

SpaceX chief Elon Musk ‘highly confident’ his Starship will reach orbit this yearReuters | Washington

Elon Musk said he was “highly confident” his new

SpaceX Starship, designed for voyages to the moon and Mars, will reach Earth orbit for the first time this year, despite a host of technical and regulatory hurdles yet to be overcome.

The bil l ionaire SpaceX founder and CEO addressed a throng of news media and supporters at his company’s “Starbase” facility in Boca Chi-ca, Texas, for a presentation that combined a high-tech pep rally with big-screen videos and a question-and-answer session.

It came nine months after the private California-based space venture achieved the first suc-cessful launch and touchdown of a Starship prototype rocket in a test-flight after four previ-ous landing attempts ended in explosions.

Musk acknowledged difficul-ties SpaceX has faced in devel-oping the “Raptor 2” engines for its Super Heavy rocket, a re-usable next-generation launch booster designed to carry the Starship spacecraft to orbit. He cited problems with melting inside the thruster chambers of the engines from intense heat.

But he said, “we’re very close to solving that,” and expect-ed to scale up production to about seven or eight of the en-gines a week by next month and produce a new Starship and a booster every month by year’s end.

“I feel at this point highly confident that we will get to orbit (with the Starship) this year,” said Musk, who also heads electric car maker Tesla.

Such a time frame would mark an ambitious feat, even for an uncrewed orbital test flight of the Super Heavy/Starship combo, the next step up from SpaceX’s current workhorse

Falcon 9 rocket, which Musk said has flown 144 successful launches and 106 return land-ings.

Environmental reviewBut the very future of the

Boca Chica test-flight and pro-duction facility near the south-eastern Gulf Coast tip of Texas is now at stake in an environ-mental assessment of the site under way by the Federal Avia-tion Administration.

The FAA is expected to decide in the coming weeks whether a planned build-out there poses a significant environmental im-pact to the area - including an adjacent wildlife reserve - and must therefore undergo a far

more extensive study before expanded operations at Boca Chica can be licensed.

Such an environmental im-pact statements, or EIS reviews, can take years to complete and are often subject to litigation.

Asked what he knew about the status of the FAA review, Musk said, “We don’t have a ton of insight into where things stand with the FAA,” but added: “We have gotten sort of a rough indication there may be an ap-proval in March. But that’s all we know.”

Even in a “worst-case” sce-nario, in which a full EIS were required or legal wrangling over the issue threatened to drag on, Musk said SpaceX has a fall-back plan. The company would shift its entire Starship program to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Flor-ida, where SpaceX already has received the environmental ap-proval it needs, Musk said.

Such a move would cause a setback of six to eight months, he added.

Russia masses more troops near Ukraine, US saysBiden says ‘things could go crazy quickly’ as Western diplomatic efforts yield no progress

• New Russian deployments detected by satellite

Reuters | Washington

Russia is massing yet more troops near Ukraine and an invasion could come at any

time, perhaps before the end of this month’s Winter Olympics, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said yesterday.

Moscow, for its part, ramped up its truculent response towards a Western diplomatic push to de-fuse the crisis, dismissing answers sent this week by the EU and NATO to its security demands as an in-sult.

Commercial satellite images published by a private US compa-ny showed new Russian military deployments at several locations near Ukraine.

In his starkest warning yet to Americans in Ukraine to get out now, President Joe Biden said he would not send troops to rescue US citizens in the event of a Rus-sian assault.

“Things could go crazy quickly,” Biden told NBC News.

Blinken, visiting Australia, told a news conference: “We’re in a window when an invasion could begin at any time, and to be clear, that includes during the Olym-pics.”

The Beijing games end on Feb. 20.

“Simply put, we continue to see

very troubling signs of Russian escalation, including new forces arriving at the Ukrainian border,” Blinken said.

Russia has already massed more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine, and this week it launched joint military exercises in neighbour-ing Belarus and naval drills in the Black Sea.

Moscow denies plans to invade Ukraine, but says it could take unspecified “military-technical” action unless a series of demands are met, including promises from NATO never to admit Ukraine and to withdraw forces from Eastern Europe.

The West has said those main demands are non-starters. The EU and NATO alliance delivered joint responses this week, saying their member states had agreed to speak as one. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday it had demanded an individual answer from each country, and called the

collective response insulting.“Such a step cannot be seen

as anything other than a sign of diplomatic impoliteness and dis-respect for our request,” the min-istry said.

Several Western countries launched diplomatic pushes this week to persuade Russia to back down, but Moscow brushed them off, yielding no concessions to French President Emmanuel Ma-cron who visited on Monday and openly mocking British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss who came on Thursday.

Four-way talks in Berlin be-tween Russia, Ukraine, Ger-many and France, part of a longstanding peace process in a conflict between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists, also yielded no progress on Thursday.

Paris and Kyiv said the Rus-sian delegation had demand-ed Ukraine negotiate directly with the separatists, a “red line”

Ukraine has rejected since the conflict began in 2014.

“If Ukraine agrees to this, then the status of Russia will change from being a party to the conflict to the status of being a mediator in the conflict. That is why we do not go for it,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

The mute talking to the deafUS-based Maxar Technolo-

gies, which has been tracking the buildup of Russian forces, said images taken on Wednesday and Thursday showed new deploy-ments in western Russia, Belarus and Crimea, which Russia an-nexed in 2014.

The images could not be inde-pendently verified by Reuters.

Maxar identified 550 new troop tents and hundreds of vehicles at a Crimea airfield; extra troops, military vehicles and helicopters at an airfield in Belarus less than 25 km (15 miles) from the Ukraine

border; and a large new deploy-ment in western Russia around 110 km from the frontier.

Russia says it has the right to move forces around on its terri-tory as it sees fit, and they pose no external threat.

Western countries have mostly stood together in threatening eco-nomic sanctions against Russia if it invades Ukraine, but have given conflicting views on the threat’s immediacy.

Washington and London have warned an invasion could come within days. British Prime Min-ister Boris Johnson called the coming days the most dangerous moment in Europe’s biggest secu-rity crisis for decades.

France’s Macron, by contrast, has said he thinks Russia does not have designs on Ukraine but wants changes to European se-curity arrangements, and the ex-isting Franco-German-led peace process for Ukraine’s separatist conflict provides a way out.

Whatever its intentions, Mos-cow has responded dismissively to Western pressure. Pictures of Macron seated far from Putin at the opposite end of a huge table in the Kremlin went viral on the in-ternet this week, widely mocked.

The Kremlin said yesterday the distant seating was necessary because Macron had refused a COVID-19 test administered by Russian doctors. French officials said Macron’s travel schedule did not leave time to wait for test re-sults; French sources also said Macron’s office was worried Mos-cow would sample his DNA.

In Venezuela, damage from party on sacred mountain spurs outrage

Reuters | Puerto Ordaz

A birthday party held on a mountain sacred to

indigenous Venezuelans has generated outrage over damage to the area in an episode critics see as enti-tled excess playing out amid Venezuela’s prolonged eco-nomic collapse.

Last week, party-goers celebrating the birthday of businessman Rafael Ol-iveros were ferried in hel-icopters to a pristine flat-topped mountain known as Kusari, located in the Canaima national park in southern Venezuela’s eco-logically rich Amazon re-gion, according to a state-ment by environmental group SOS Orinoco.

In the indigenous Pemon language, such mountains called “tepuy,” are revered, including for their extreme-ly rare and fragile plant life.

“This was a violation of Mother Earth because these are sacred, untouch-able mountains that we’ve traditionally watched over, conserved and respected, just like our ancestors,” Nazario Rosi, a 63-year-old Pemon elder, told Reuters.

“They totally cleared the local plants,” Rosi said, re-ferring to those who attend-ed the party, adding that the area has been left as if harshly raked. He stressed the Pemon culture forbids reaching the Kusari sum-mit.

Mexican journalist killed in latest violent attack on mediaReuters | London

A Mexican journalist was shot and killed in the southern

state of Oaxaca, police said, the latest in a string of journalist deaths that have prompted U.S. lawmakers to pressure Mexico to step up protections.

Heber Lopez, an independent journalist who ran NoticiasWeb, was shot and killed, police offi-cials told Mexican news outlet Milenio. Lopez was attacked at his recording studio, outlet RCP Noticias said on social media.

The attorney general for Oaxaca said two people were arrested in relation with the crime, though the investigation was still ongo-ing.

Lopez, who worked in the port city of Salina Cruz, had received death threats in 2019, according to some local media reports.

The journalist regularly wrote about politics and corruption in local government, Rodolfo Can-seco, the director of RCP Noticias, told Reuters.

His death is the latest in a spate of attacks against journal-ists in Mexico in recent weeks. Three journalists and one media

worker were killed in the month of January alone, and a former journalist was killed on Saturday evening.

United States Senators Tim Kaine and Marco Rubio urged Mexico on Tuesday to do more to protect journalists, criticizing Mexican President Andres Ma-nuel Lopez Obrador for lashing out against his critics in the me-dia.

According to human rights or-ganization Article 19, around 145 journalists were killed in Mexico from 2000 to 2021, making Mex-ico one of the deadliest countries in the world for journalists.

They were photographed at opposite ends of a table so long that it provoked satirical com-ment on social media and spec-ulation, including by diplomats, that Putin might be using it to send a message.

But two sources who have knowledge of the French presi-dent’s health protocol told Reu-

ters Macron had been given a choice: either accept a PCR test done by the Russian authori-ties and be allowed to get close to Putin, or refuse and have to abide by more stringent social distancing.

“We knew very well that meant no handshake and that long table. But we could not accept that they get their hands on the president’s DNA,” one of the sources told Reuters, refer-ring to security concerns if the French leader was tested by Russian doctors.

Quad ministers address Indo-Pacific ‘coercion’, climate, COVIDReuters | Melbourne

The United States, Australia, Japan and India yesterday

pledged to deepen cooperation to ensure the Indo-Pacific re-gion was free from “coercion”, a thinly-veiled swipe at China’s growing economic and military expansion, as their top diplo-mats convened to also tackle climate change, COVID and oth-er threats.

Foreign ministers of the so-called Quad, the informal grouping of the four countries, vowed to work on humanitari-an relief, terrorism, cyber and maritime security and global supply chain challenges.

Despite being outside the group’s scope, an escalating crisis between the West and Russia over Ukraine was also a top agenda item, with US Sec-retary of State Antony Blinken casting Moscow’s build-up as a challenge to the international rules-based order, which he said Quad would work to pre-serve.

“That includes champion-ing the rights of all countries to choose their own path, free from coercion and the right to have their sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect-ed. Whether that’s here in the Indo-Pacific, in Europe, or an-ywhere else in the world,” he said in his opening remarks of the meeting.

News in brief u The US government plans to free up

half of $7 billion in frozen Afghan central bank assets on its soil for aiding the Afghan people, while the rest will remain in the United States pending lawsuits from victims of terrorism, sources said. A US judge last month gave President Joe Biden’s administration until yesterday to come up with a plan on what to do with the

frozen funds, amid urgent calls from US lawmakers and the United Nations for them to be used to address the dire economic crisis in Afghanistan.

u More people arrived outside New Zealand’s parliament yesterday, as protesters calling for an end to a vaccine mandate and tough COVID-19 restrictions refused to end their demonstrations despite arrests by the police. It’s been four days since several thousand protesters, inspired by truckers’ demonstrations in Canada, occupied the parliament lawns in the capital Wellington, and blocked surrounding streets with their trucks, cars, camper vans and motorcycles.

u London’s police chief announced her resignation Thursday after a string of

scandals rocked the British capital’s force, including racism, sexism and a serving officer murdering a young woman. Cressida Dick, who became the first woman to head London’s Metropolitan Police in 2017, said she had “no choice but to step aside” after London mayor Sadiq Khan said he no longer had confidence in her leadership.

u Finland has sealed a deal to buy dozens of F-35 stealth warplanes from the United States, in a sign of its military’s close ties with NATO at a time of high tension between the West and Russia in Europe. The northern European nation - which borders Russia and was historically neutral during the Cold War - signed the $9.4 billion agreement yesterday to buy 64 radar-evading Lockheed Martin jets.

Macron refused Russian COVID test in Putin trip over DNA theft fearsReuters | Moscow

French President Emmanuel Macron refused a Kremlin

request that he take a Russian COVID-19 test when he arrived to see President Vladimir Putin this week, to prevent Russia getting hold of Macron’s DNA, two sources in Macron’s entou-

rage told Reuters. As a result, the visiting

French head of state was kept at a distance from the Russian leader during lengthy talks on the Ukraine crisis in Moscow.

Selena Gomez says she believed she had to wear makeup ‘to feel pretty’ when she was youngerBusiness Insider | Los Angeles

Despite finding success with her own beauty

line, Selena Gomez said she no longer sees makeup as a necessity.

During a recent interview with Glamour UK about ex-panding Rare Beauty over-seas, the “Only Murders in the Building” star was asked

to give self-care advice to her younger self.

“I’d tell her that makeup is something to have fun with, but not something you need,” she said. “I used to think I needed to wear makeup to feel pretty, and I can defi-nitely say that has changed as I’ve gotten older.”

Gomez also said she keeps her makeup routine “pret-ty simple” when she’s not

filming, and values her moisturizer over any oth-er product in her beauty cabinet.

“Hydrated skin is very important to me,” she said.

Gomez launched Rare Beauty in 2020 with the goal of having “open conversations around b e a u t y a n d m e n t a l health,” she said.

I used to think I needed to wear makeup to feel

pretty, and I can definitely say that has changed as I’ve

with Kim KardashianANI | Washington

After publicly referring to Kim Kardashian as his girl-

friend, ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Pete Davidson also opened up about their Valentine’s Day plans.

In a recent interview with People (The TV Show!), Davidson, 28, opened up about his plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Kardashian, admitting that this will be the first time he’s had a significant other to spend the holiday with.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a Val-entine’s Day thing, re a l l y,” s a i d Da -

vidson. “So this would be the first ye a r t h a t I ’ m thinking about Valentine’s Day plans, I guess.”

“It’s a big day,” he added, saying that he’s “very much so” mulling over the idea.

During the inter-

view, Davidson also referred to the 41-year-old Skims mogul as his “girlfriend” publicly for the first time while opening up about living his life in the spotlight.

“Well, I don’t really have Instagram. I don’t have Insta-gram or Twitter or any of that stuff. So most of my daily life is getting into cars and show-ing up to a set,” he said. “Or, if I’m off, I just either hang with my friends or chill with my girlfriend inside. So I don’t do much. So my life’s zero affected at all.”

“Once in a while, some-one will scream something at you, or it might be hard to get Dunkin’ Donuts,” the ‘Big Time Adolescence’ star continued. “But other than that, it’s pretty fine. It’s not awful. It could be way worse.”

Patrick J. Adams would “kill” to work with

Meghan, Duchess of Sus-sex again.

The 40-year-old actor praised his former ‘Suits’ co-star - who was known as Meghan Markle before her marriage to Prince Harry - as a “huge talent” and ad-mitted he is “very excited” to see what she and her hus-band produce in their deals with Netflix and Spotify.

He told ‘Extra’: “I would kill to work with Meghan again.

“She’s a huge talent and more than anything she’s the most motivated, driven human being I’ve ever met in my life. I’m very excited to see what she does.”

Patrick and his wife Tro i a n B e l l i s a r i o a re launching an apparel range, The Troian and Patrick Col-lection, which is inspired by their shows ‘Suits’ and ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and will see proceeds used to create a photogra-phy academy in Los Angeles.

Channing Tatum says he wanted to quit acting back in 2018IANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Channing Tatum once contemplat-

ed quitting acting as he was overwhelmed by existential

thoughts.The thought of mov-

ing out of the business of acting came to him in 2018, around the time of his divorce from Jenna Dewan (with whom he

shares custody of their eight-year-old daughter

Everly), reports ‘Variety’.In an interview with ‘Va-

riety’, the actor recollected asking himself: “Do I want to act anymore? Was I go-ing to direct? Do I want to be in the industry any-more? I got lucky. I won a creative lottery tick-et. I made a little bit of money, so I could take a step back and figure out what life is.”

The thought put him on the path of other ar-tistic pursuits, including publishing a children’s book, ‘The One and Only Sparkella’. He said: “I re-

ally took time off. I sculpted. I took pictures. I wrote my own stuff, not like a script

or anything. Just cre-ating on different

levels. I wanted to take a breather.”

During the pe-riod, Tatum put his energy into development of movies and TV

shows at Free As-sociation, which

he had launched in 2014 with Carolin and Peter Kiernan,

his former manager. Some of the projects that

they’ve been working on are the currently under produc-tion ‘Spaceman’, with Adam Sandler, whose rights have been secured by Netflix, and ‘Step Up: Highwater’, the Starz TV series.

The actor will also produce and star in the thriller ‘Pussy Island’, which will be his girl-friend Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut. Learning from his hustle on ‘Dog’, he advised his love interest not to take an acting role in it too.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Valentine’s Day thing, really. So this

would be the first year that I’m thinking about Valentine’s Day plans, I guess

TDT | Manama

Dante Tisdom scored the daily high series of 685 pins on the third day of

qualification in the His High-ness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa First Bowling Cham-pionship, currently being held at Funland Centre’s bowling lanes.

Tisdom’s trial was his best of the tournament thus far, and it helped raise his average to 202.33 pins per game from a 1,821 total from his three best series. His two other top scores were 579 and 557.

With that, Tisdom improved to third place on the men’s divi-sion standings, while also keep-ing his position atop the seniors category.

Bowlers in this stage must play at least three trials to be eligible to advance to the next

round, with each participant’s top three series being counted.

Tisdom now trails Ahmed Fa-reed and Essa Taqi amongst the men. Fareed stayed in first with his leading marks of 221.56 and 1,994.

Taqi moved to second position after playing two impressive

scores of 647 and 607 to bring his average to 210.33 and total to 1,893.

Abdulla Abdulkarim and Emeerson Gotencio from the Philippines, who were previous-ly second and third, respective-ly, dropped to fourth and fifth. Abdulkarim boasts a 200.78 av-

Iyer, Pant help India sweep ODI series against West Indies

Reuters | London

Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant hit half-centuries

to set up a thumping 96-run victory for India in the third one-day international against the West Indies and sweep the series yesterday.

Iyer, who made 80, and Pant, who hit 56, guided India to 265 after they lost three early wickets while batting first in Ahmedabad.

Bowlers, led by pace spearhead Mohammed Sir-aj, then combined to bowl out the West Indies for 169 in 37.1 overs to seal their first ever ODI whitewash over their opponents.

Siraj and fellow paceman Prasidh Krishna took three wickets apiece, while quick bowler Deepak Chahar and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav also claimed two each.

But it was the 110-run fourth-wicket partnership between Iyer and Pant that made India bounce back from 43-3, having lost two key wickets of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for nought.

Chahar and Washington Sundar, who made 33, got useful cameos before India were bowled out on the final ball of the 50th over.

Hazlewood takes four as Australia beat Sri Lanka in opening T20

AFP | Sydney

Josh Hazlewood took 4-12 on his return from a long

injury layoff as world cham-pions Australia began the post-Justin Langer era with a comfortable 20-run T20 victory over Sri Lanka in Sydney yesterday.

Langer was always going to miss the five-match se-ries, opting to rest after a long stint on the road, but his shock resignation last weekend cast a shadow over the lead up.

With interim coach An-drew McDonald at the helm, Australia were re-stricted to 149 for nine in their first T20 since win-ning the World Cup in No-vember.

But top-class bowling from Hazlewood, Pat Cum-mins (1-32) and Adam Zam-pa (3-18) denied the visitors, who were chasing 143 to win after one over was lost to rain.

Russian doping controversy ignites at Beijing Games, White bows out AFP | Beijing

Russian teenage figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned

substance, Beijing Olympics testers con-firmed yesterday, while American snow-boarding legend Shaun White finished an agonising fourth in his final appearance.

After concerns about Covid, human rights and man-made snow in the build-up to the Olympics in the Chinese capital, doping became the latest controversy to rock the Games.

Reports of doping had swirled around the prodigious 15-year-old Valieva after the medals ceremony for the figure skat-ing team event -- in which she played a starring role to lead Russia to gold -- was delayed this week.

Yesterday, soon after she was seen practising on the ice in Beijing, the Inter-

national Testing Agency (ITA) confirmed traces of the banned substance trimetazi-dine were found in a sample she gave in December.

Valieva now faces a fight to stay at the Games and take part in the women’s indi-vidual event, which starts on February 15 and for which she is the favourite.

Her case will be decided by the Court of Arbitration for Sport before then.

It is just the latest doping scandal sur-rounding Russian athletes in recent years at Olympic Games.

Russian competitors are taking part

in Beijing as the Russian Olympic Com-mittee (ROC) after the nation was banned because of a massive state-sponsored doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Olym-pics which it hosted.

“Such cases are not helpful to the Games,” said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams yesterday, as the Games reeled from yet another doping scandal.

Russia’s Olympic Committee said that Valieva had the right to compete in Bei-jing and that her team gold medal should stand.

For the second day in a row it over-shadowed the action on the snow and ice at the Olympics, where an emotional White ended his storied snowboarding career by coming an agonising fourth in the halfpipe, just missing out on a fare-well medal.

Manama rout Hidd, Ahli edge past Budaiya• Mahdi Abduljabbar scores brace to lead five scorers for Manama in 6-0 win over Hidd

• Russian Artyom Serdyuk scores twice for Ahli in narrow 3-2 triumph over

TDT | Manama

Manama hit six goals past Hidd last night, without reply, in the 11th week

of action in the 2021/2022 Nasser bin Ham-ad Bahrain Premier League.

Five players were on target for the win-ners, led by Bahrain international striker Mahdi Abduljabbar, who had a brace with a goal apiece on either side of half-time.

Abduljabbar opened Manama’s account in the 27th minute with a header, while also scoring in the first half was Syrian Amr Janiyat.

After the break, goals from Ebrahim Al Khattal, Abdulrahman Al Sayed, Mahmoud

Mukhtar and a 90th-minute capper by Abduljabbar, who had a fine solo effort, wrapped up the lopsided result.

With the result, Manama improved to 22 points in second place on the league stand-ings with six wins from 11 matches. Hidd suffered their fifth loss and stayed on eight points in the bottom half of the standings.

In another match last night, Al Ahli edged past Budaiya 3-2.

Scoring two goals for Ahli was Russian professional Artyom Serdyuk, while Faisal Hassan Habib added another. Abdulla Duij fired in both of Budaiya’s goals.

Ahli claimed only their second win in 11 tries to improve to 12 points, while Budaiya suffered their league-worst eighth loss and stayed on five markers.

Action continues on Monday with two matches on the cards. At 4.55pm, East Riffa take on Al Najma, followed by defending back-to-back league champions Riffa facing Al Khaldiya.

34.56 seconds (with four faults). In the second, which featured 110cm

fences, Charlotte achieved the maximum points of 44, also followed by Enmar Ali who finished the contest in 48.64 seconds (42 points).

In third place came Fares Yahya, whose time was 48.05 seconds. Shockingly, Sultan Al Rumaihi, who triumphed in each of the previous rounds, came only fourth in the second competition. This was the first time for him to miss a po-dium finish since the start of the new season.

Ahli win overtime thriller against MuharraqTDT | Manama

Champions Al Ahli showed why they are the team to

beat in the 2021/2022 Zain Bahrain Basketball League fol-lowing a come-from-behind 94-91 overtime victory over Muharraq last night in their Top Six division clash at the Khalifa Sports City arena in Isa Town.

Ahli were down by three late in regulation but Maitham Jameel was able to tie the game with 10.4 seconds remaining with a long three-pointer to force the extra session.

Then, with 48 seconds left in overtime, Jameel buried two pressure-packed free-throws to give Ahli the lead for good, 92-91. Hesham Sarhan then made another pair of chari-ties with seven seconds to go to extend their lead to three, which was eventually the final winning margin.

Muharraq’s American im-port Dewayne Jackson had a chance to tie the game with a desperation triple that came up short.

It was a see-saw affair be-tween the two rivals. Muarraq led 26-21 at the end of the first quarter but Ahli managed to charge ahead 43-38 at the half.

Ahli then went up by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, 52-40, with a Jameel three, but Muharraq were able to reduce the deficit to 62-63 heading into the final canto.

Things remained close in the fourth, and the game was tied

at 81-apiece after Ahli’s Mo-hwammed Kuwayed scored on a lay-up. But then Muhar-raq’s Serbian-Montenegrin import Boris Savovic scored from beyond the arc to make it 84-81, which set the stage for Jameel’s late-game heroics.

Adrian Uter had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ahli in the win, which was their third in as many games. Hes-ham Sarhan added 18 and Ku-wayed 16, both off the bench, while Jameel finished with 11.

Muharraq, who were play-ing their first game of the Top Six, were paced by Jackson, who had 27 points. Savovic added 23 markers with 16 re-bounds.
