Higher education is one of the most developed innovative and responsive

reference organizations in the development of science and technology.

Adaptation to the development of science and technology takes a very important

role. If we do not want to be backed up by technological progress, human

resource competencies must also changed. The way the organization works must

also adjusted.

Higher education must become an innovative-disruptive motor that can

change the mindset, the workings of organizations, productivity, discipline,

innovation, progressive, open to change, and aggressive in making

breakthroughs. One way is to create a curriculum and learning methods that are

flexible and contextual. Higher education must be able to become a channel of

thoughts through research and various innovations.

New ways must be developed. The desire of students and lecturers to

innovate must be grown. Agenda for change always adjusts the times and

equipping students with various skills must be considered so that they are able to

survive. The briefing included mastery of data and technology, humanities

knowledge, leadership skills, and entrepreneurship. In addition, the world of

education and the world of industry must work together to develop the industrial

transformation strategy. One of them is to consider the development of the

employment sector because industrial transformation will succeed with

competent workforce.

Departing from this background, we as academics at the Universitas

Negeri Jakarta held an international seminar because we realized the importance

of Higher Education as a formal educational institution that is expected to

produce competent human resources who are ready to face the growing business

and industry along with technological advancements.

To discuss these issues, we facilitate experts, academics, and

practitioners to inform scientific ideas related to these issues in the event of an

International Conference on Education, Language, and Society (ICELS) with the

theme "Reinforcing Education, Language, and Socio-culture through Creating

Qualified Human Resources in the Industrial Revolution 4.0" which was held on

August 6, 2019 at the Language Education of Postgraduate school, Universitas

Negeri Jakarta.

We document all the ideas put forward in this conference in the form of

this anthology as the internal publication. Meanwhile, we will publish a

complete collection of papers in the International Proceedings at SciTepress

vi

Publisher which is currently in the editorial process. The proceeding itself will

be available online in December 2019 and after that, the proceeding will be

indexed by Scopus.

[email protected]

ABSTRACT

This study aims to develop models of Arabic syntax teaching material with

Ethnolinguistics Approaches in an online-games based. The method used in the

development of this model of teaching materials was the procedural model

proposed by Borg & Gall. Procedural model is a descriptive model that

describes the flow or the procedural steps to be followed to produce teaching

materials. The stages in the procedural model include: (1) research and

gathering initial information, (2) planning, (3) development of initial product

format, (4) the initial trial, (5) revision of the product, (6) field trials, (7)

revision of the product, (8) field test, (9) the revision of the final product, and

(10) the dissemination and implementation. The model was tested in Jakarta

State University. Test results show that t-observed is 12.23 and the t-table at

0.05 significance level is 1.70. The t-observed is greater than the t-table. This

means that there is a significant difference between the learning achievements

before and after the use of Arabic language teaching materials with

Ethnolinguistics Approaches in an online-games based. In conclusion, these

materials can improve student learning outcomes and effective to use in

learning the Arabic language with Ethnolinguistics Approaches in an online-

games based.

ABSTRACT

Translation process requires the right translation strategy. Students who are not

able to choose a good strategy will produce less quality of translation results.

This research explores translation strategies applied by students when

translating English narrative texts into Bahasa Indonesia. 25 students of the

English language education program who participated in translation course

were asked to translate English narrative texts into Bahasa Indonesia. Five

articles of the translation results were selected as data to be analyzed. The data

showed that literal translation strategies are still dominated. However, most of

the texts were translated well. Grammatical errors only occur in noun phrases

and adjectives where the grammatical pattern still applied the pattern of Bahasa

Indonesia.

ABSTRACT

This paper is based on a study which investigated syntactic deviations occurred

in seven novels published in 2000s. The study was aimed at revealing the types

of syntactic deviations. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The

data were gathered by using descriptive method and qualitative approach. The

study results showed that the syntactic deviations made by the authors of the

novels took the form of omission, addition, miss-formations, and miss-

ordering. The omissions covered the absence of syntactic functions and

grammatical words (prepositions and conjunctions). The additions include

addition of certain words to the available phrases which caused disorder in the

phrasal structure. The miss-formations involved presence of different forms of

verb functioning as predicate. The miss-orderings was visible as the cutting of

some complete sentences into two incomplete sentences or dependent clauses.

The study results also showed that the syntactical deviations did not fall into

the serious ones so that they might not cause the readers‟ misunderstanding of

the novels. Many deviations indicate the grammar of casual or daily language.

Rather, the syntactic deviations contribute to the writers‟ creation of stronger

expressive and aesthetic language. The deviations also maintain better

readability and naturalness of the writers‟ language.

Keywords: syntactic deviations, omission, addition, miss-formations, miss-

ordering.

ABSTRACT

The strategies in communicating by teachers of students with autism in

learning are divided into verbal and non-verbal strategies. Referring to the

theory elaborated by SES (2002), verbal strategies include addressing

strategies, direct speaking strategies, close-ended question strategies, and

visual strategies. Besides, non-verbal strategies include proximity strategies

and physical touch strategies that are analyzed by Jalongo theory (1992).

Speech data was taken from two teachers in an academic class who act as the

main teacher and accompanying teacher during the learning process. They

teach students with autism with different levels of age, different classes, and

different types of autism in academic classes that produce unique patterns of

communication, especially if it is associated with Javanese culture that binds

the identity of the teachers for students with autism. This study employed a

pragmatic analysis approach. The researcher found several strategies which are

not included in the opinions proposed by SES (2002) and Jalongo (1992). The

strategies are the existence of a repetition strategy as a verbal strategy.

ABSTRACT

Indonesian language textbooks have important functions for teachers and

students. For teachers the textbook is the main teaching material in the class.

For students the textbook is an important teaching material for understanding

the subject matter delivered by the teacher. With this important function the

choice of words contained in the textbook must be in accordance with the

student's grade level so that the vocabulary that has been learned can support

the understanding of the material at the next level. At the moment there is no

grading in the vocabulary in the textbook, specifically the grade in words that

have been formed from several affixes or referred to as combined affixed

vocabulary. The formation and use of vocabulary is more complex when

compared to words that only have prefixes, suffixes, or confixes. The focus of

this study will be to discuss combined affixed vocabulary with more than two

affixes. The corpus of this study is class VII Indonesian textbooks, class VIII,

and class IX. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach and

content analysis method. The data used are Class VII Indonesian Language

Textbooks, class VIII, and class IX which are textbooks referring to the 2013

Curriculum. The study was conducted in DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. The results

showed that there were 12 patterns of words that had more than two affixes,

namely [di-(per-(D-kan))], [di-(per-D-i)], [(di-(ber-D)-kan))-lah], [(di-(per-D-

kan))-nya], [mem-((per-D)-i)], [mem-(per-D-i)-nya], [mem-(per-(D-kan))],

[(pe-(ber-D)-an], [pe-(per-D))-an], [(per-(ber-D)-an)-nya], [ke-(ber-D)-an],

and [ke-(ter-D)-an]. Some of them are accompanied by clitics. This study

reveals the frequency of the twelve patterns at each level. Based on the

frequency, a special gap can be proposed for the pattern of combined affixed

vocabulary.

ABSTRACT

Teaching English communicatively is highly required, especially in order to

increase speaking skill. However, communicative approach itself is not

sufficient if students cannot maximize their learning through cooperative

approach. Therefore, in teaching speaking, the lecturer may apply combined

techniques from the two approaches. Think-pair-share (TPS) and Role-play

(RP) were two tehniques implemented to teach speaking skill at STIBA IEC

Jakarta. Based on the previous classroom observation, the students practiced

speaking through RP and had to prepare their script through TPS. RP technique

was able to run smoothly when the students did implement communicative

approach through TPS properly. However, the techniques needed improvement

and adaptation to suit the students‟ needs. The action research made use of

qualitative method and quantitative method to see the implementation of the

techniques and to analyze the students‟ progress. At the end of the research, the

results indicated that the students scores improved significantly and they were

much better than the previous semester. It can be concluded that RP and TPS

are combined techniques that can increase English speaking skill, provided that

the techniques are applied properly.

ABSTRACT

The study focused on dynamic equivalence in Manga (Japanese Comics) that

have been translated into Indonesian. One of the significant activities in dealing

with the high rapid of electronic information is translation. In the recent years,

artifacts of Japanese culture that have spread worldwide was Manga due to

translation. It has been heralded that manga translation has influenced the

development of youth culture so that a research was necessary. The objective

of this study to gain an in-depth knowledge how to get the proper dynamic

equivalence of translation particularly from the point of view culture to get

more proper translation result by comparing the source text with its translation.

The methodology of this research was a qualitative content analysis. The 135

data were taken from the comic dialogue translation of Topeng Kaca which

was translated from Japanese Manga “Garasu no Kamen”. From the data

analysis, the research found that proper dynamic equivalence was taken from

three important dynamic equivalence principles: 1) to deal with the underlying

meaning,. it was not about the simplicity but about the complexity of language;

2) to get the deep understanding of cultural aspect both source text and target

text since the message of a text was determined by both cultural and situational

factors; 3) dynamic equivalence in translation was an accomodation for the

linguistic and cultural differences; it was a relationship between the surface and

the deep structures of a language. This research concluded that

misunderstanding of cultural aspects would lead the translator to the wrong

dynamic equivalent in the target language. The wrong translation might lead

young readers to the wrong interpretation of the Japanese cross culture.

experiences, and also cognitive processes which one of them is obtained in

descriptive writing. The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of

“hero” by The EFL third graders‟ descriptive writings observed using one of

Halliday and Hassan‟s five categories of cohesive devices, lexical cohesive

devices, to enhance their overall texts‟ communicability as the devices are

prominent to textual cohesion. The data of the features generally come from

texts, oral and written, in any documents or transcripts. This paper focuses on

(1) the type of lexical cohesion features occur in the third grade descriptive

writing, (2) the difference concept of „hero‟ obtained through the lexical

cohesion features occur in the third grades‟ descriptive writing based on the

research by first collecting, classifying, and then analyzing the data, finalize in

drawing conclusion based on the result of data analysed taken from the

descriptive writing produced by Indonesian third grade students of Cahaya

Bangsa Classical School (CBCS) obtained in January 2019. This is a case

study based on four previous researches in which specifies to the twelve (12)

particular grade of Indonesian elementary students. In result, both type of

lexical cohesion features appears in the students descriptive which mostly are

simple repetition, substitution, and equivalence, whereas only the first type

ABSTRACT

This study aims to obtain in-depth information about syntactic disorder

experienced by children with mental retardation. This study used the

descriptive qualitative method. The focus of this study is syntactic disorder in

the form of syntactic structures spoken by children with mental retardation.

The sub-focus of this study is in the form of syntactic tool disorder and

syntactic unit disorder spoken by children with mental retardation. The results

of this study indicate that 151 errors were found in the form of syntactic unit

disorder. The most errors are in the phrase unit which amounts to 61 errors, the

sentence unit that is 48 errors, and the clause unit that is 42 errors. In addition

to syntactic unit disorder, 37 errors were also found in the form of syntax tools.

The most errors were intonation disorder amounted to 12 errors, defective word

order as many as 11 errors, particle disorder as many as 9 errors, and the last

defective word form as many as 5 errors. This study concludes that children

with mental retardation experience language disorders in the form of syntactic

disorder because they are affected by neurological disorders. This syntactic

disorder is caused by children with mental retardation having difficulty

composing phrases using prepositions and the resulting phrases tend to reverse

the order. The resulting clause does not have the right additions. The resulting

sentence is in the form of a minor sentence and is spoken with flat intonation.

Furthermore, the speech production that comes out is usually not following the

context of the conversation. The suggestion from this research is that teachers

must be more active in finding strategies/models/methods/ learning media that

can make syntactic unit disorder and syntactic tool disorder in children with

mental retardation are reduced.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explain the reasons for violating Grice's cooperative

principles in the sociocultural context of Indonesia. This study applied a

phenomenology approach. The research data was collected through interviews

with 79 students from various tribes in Indonesia namely the Malay, Minang,

Javanese, Sundanese, Batak, and Banjar tribes. The results showed that

violations of quantity maxims occurred due to several reasons, namely: sharing

information, being intimate, friendly/not arrogant, polite, in order to be

clear/not to be asked again, refusing in a refined manner, habits, close friends.

In the meantime, in quality maxim violations occurred for reasons of joking,

nosy, insinuating, declaring prohibitions, lying, and annoying/angry.

Furthermore, violations of the maxim of relevance occurred because of the

context that is equally understood/habit, because it cannot do what is requested

by the interlocutor, subtle refusal/indirect, in order to be polite, joking, in order

the utterance is short, does not know the answer, annoyed, and avoid direct

speech. For the maxim of manner, violations occurred for reasons of being

polite, confused in giving answers, forgetting, nervous, in order the speech

partner empathizes, avoids direct speech, because of secret speeches, certain

vocabulary substitutes, niceties, lying, habits, and keeping a good relationship.

This study implies that Grice's cooperative principle cannot be applied

universally in all languages. This is because of the sociocultural context

between one language and another is different.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND THE NEGOTIATION OF

RELIGIOUS IDENTITY INAN AMERICAN ISLAMIC SCHOOL

[email protected]

ABSTRACT

This study is part of a larger research project examining an overarching

question how an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher mediate the literacy

teaching and learning of twenty 6th

grade students at an American Islamic

school whose language and cultural background are diverse. Only findings

related to the process of meaning and identity construction reported in this

paper. The research method was a narrative case study in which interview,

classroom observation, field notes, and documentation were employed as tools

of data collection. The data was then analyzed through grounded theory.

Drawing upon the ecological framework of literacy, this study shed lights on

literacy practices in faith-based setting that are intertwined with religious

values in addition to meaning and identity construction. The participants were

involved in the literacy events that utilized multiple language uses and texts.

The findings indicate that meaning and identity may be produced, formed, and

transformed in an intersection between secular and spiritual worldviews, which

solidifies a novel way of knowing and understanding the world situated in a

dynamic learning environment. This study suggests that literacy learning may

include an extension of reading secular texts to reading sacred texts in order to

accommodate the sociocultural needs of the students.

ABSTRACT

The present paper is an overview of selected investigations into acquisition of

second language phonology (L2). It describes L2 phonology researchers‟

attempts to determine the number, quantity, quality, and roles of the factors

which shape the pronunciation of L2 adult speakers, i.e. what is the influence

of native language limitation, how the L2 phonology acquisition is governed by

universal linguistic features, and whether adults use the same processes in

acquiring the L2 that are used by children when they acquire their first

language. This article will describe a number of longstanding phonetic and

phonological projects whose aim was to discover patterns in the improvement

of pronunciation in a second language. It strives to explain the universal stages

in the development of second language phonology. The main goal of the

research is to assess the grammatical knowledge of the L2 learner, i.e. their

competence in their Interlanguage. The analyses show typological

disproportions and universality of the strategies applied by the speakers in the

target language. Although this unilateral focus of the research projects reflects

the expansion of the English language as the lingua franca of modern times, it

might severely limit understanding of the important and interesting aspects of

second language acquisition which structurally do not apply to that language,

and are consequently overlooked.

ABSTRACT

Performance allowance or remuneration for state apparatus which has been

given by the government to state apparatus since 2013, including the

Indonesian National Armed Forces, shows the government‟s strong

commitment to the soldiers‟ welfare. This should be supported by optimal

performance on the part of the apparatus. To get an optimal performance

attention has to be focused on the factors which affect the performance, both in

terms of organization and personnel, including individual characteristics.

Studies on soldier performance are still a few and are urgent, given the

challenges of the soldiers are facing which are increasingly complex and

dynamic. Soldier performance is presumed to be influenced by organizational

culture, personality and work motivation. This study aimed at obtaining

information pertaining to and finding out the direct effect of organizational

culture, personality, and work motivation on soldier performance. This study

was a causative associative research using the quantitative approach. It used

descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed that there was a direct

effect of organizational culture on soldier performance (β=0.272); of

personality on soldier performance (β=0.213); of work motivation on soldier

performance (β=0.227); of organizational culture on work motivation

(β=0.280); and of personality on work motivation (β=0.180). In the light of the

study it can be concluded that organizational culture is not the only variable

which affects soldier performance and it is neccessary that personality and

work motivation be considered too.

ABSTRACT

As one of the creative works, writing a short story requires imaginative ability,

which often associated with a certain level of creativity and intellectual

capacity as well as enough time to complete the work. However, the

publication of short stories by some Indonesian female migrant domestic

workers in Hongkong, since 2005, demand more explanation. This research is

intended to explain the creative process of writing literary fiction of Indonesian

female domestic workers, who did not possess a high education level, and must

write under constant obstructions from their employees as well as limited time

available for them to write. This research was conducted in Hongkong, using

qualitative research with case study methods. The resources the researcher

were including video, photo and text documents, archive notes, in-depth

interview, direct observations, and engaged observations. This research

establishes eight episodes of the creative process for the female-domestic-

worker writers from beginning to the end. High education and flexible time are

not absolute pre-requisites. Anyone could write a short story, including a

marginalized person, as long as he or she has strong determination and passion

for overcoming the challenges in their creative journey.

ABSTRACT

Environmentally friendly community performance is an activity of someone who is in the organization in improving environmental quality and contributing positively to the completion of organizational goals through the dimensions of task performance and citizenship behavior. There are four strengths related to the response of environmental issues in going green, namely compliance with regulatory compliance, stakeholder pressure, economic motives and ethical concerns. The rational use of natural resources and ecosystems requires human efforts to conserve diversity and try to avoid damage by practicing environmentally and environmentally friendly regulations, laws and policies. This is effective if done by greening of institutions. Research on the environmentally friendly community performance is still little and urgent to do given the challenges of the increasingly complex and dynamic task of community performance. The Environmentally friendly community performance is thought to be influenced by environmental leadership model, cultural values, and work motivation. The purpose of the study was to obtain information and find out the direct influence of environmental leadership model, cultural values, and work motivation on environmentally friendly community performance. The data were collected by using quesionnaires distributed to 101 samples. The samples were chosen through probability sampling technique from the population - all community in Kebon Manggis village, Matraman, East Jakarta. The research method is associative causal using a quantitative approach. Analysis of the data used is path analysis. The results showed that there is a direct influence of environmental leadership model on the environmentally friendly community performance (β = 0.338); there is a direct effect of cultural values on the environmentally friendly community performance (β = 0.264); there is a direct effect of work motivation on the environmentally friendly community performance (β = 0.197); there is a direct influence of environmental leadership model on work motivation (β = 0.211); there is a direct effect of cultural values on work motivation (β = 0.273). The conclusion of the study is that environmental leadership model is not the only one that influences on the environmentally friendly community performance, it is also necessary to consider the variables of cultural values and work motivation. ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to investigate how Indonesian presidential

candidates are represented in The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe after the 2nd

presidential debate and to find out the hidden ideology based on the

representation of each candidates in the news. The data were collected from

four articles taken from The Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe website published

on February 20th 2019. In doing the analysis, the researcher employs van

Leeuwen‟s (2008) socio-semantic approach as the analytical tool supported by

transitivity system proposed by Halliday (2014). The results points out that

both presidential candidates are represented in inclusion, specifically in

activation and represented as active participants in the news article. However,

the results reveal that Jokowi is represented through positive processes more

than Prabowo in the news articles. The result further shows the values of both

news outlets in regards to the presidential election. It is expected that the

findings will contribute to give more insights into how Indonesian news outled

reporting each candidate, so that people can be more critical when reading

news.

ABSTRACT

Digital literacy as a life skill in the information society covers accessing,

managing, evaluating, integrating, creating, and communicating information

individually or collaboratively in a networked, computersupported, and web-

based environment for learning, working, or leisure (UNESCO Institute for

Information Technologies in Education, 2011). This study aims to investigate

the accommodation of digital literacy in the existing syllabuses and its

embedding in revitalized English Education Study Programme (ELESP)

syllabuses through authentic academic digital practices. Design and

Development Research is employed to conduct the study. Of the 304 courses of

five ELESP, three ELESP offers ICT courses and none explicitly embeds

digital literacy in their course syllabuses. The embedding is carried out by

identifying authentic academic digital practices and the descriptors of digital

literacy, aligning them with the characteristics of the courses, and put the

pertinent practices and descriptors into the syllabuses of the courses. The

digital literacy is explicitly covered in the course learning outcome and the

assessment of the syllabuses of all ELESP courses and through the authentic

academic digital practices in the courses, students are allowed to access,

manage, evaluate, integrate, create, and communicate information individually

or collaboratively in a learning environment in order to accomplish the course

objectives.

ABSTRACT

This research is an experimental study that tries to apply the Cognitive Social

Model in early reading of elementary school student. The main purpose of this

study was to examine the effectiveness of applying Albert Bandura's

Sociocognitive Model to the mastery of early reading in elementary school.

The Sociocognitive Model is also called the Social Learning Theory or

Observational Learning Theory. The basic principle of the Cognitive Social

Model is about what individuals learn, especially in social and moral learning

occurs through imitation and the presentation of examples of behavior

(modeling). In this study, students performed the imitation process and were

given examples of behavior in words, phrases, sentences and discourses. The

results showed that there was a significant difference in the increase of the

mean value between the experimental group values (47.00) and the control

group (6.03). The average of student ability to read words is 28.30 and the

average of reading sentence is 8.23. Learning materials and exam materials

consist of 30 words, containing family words, objects, verbal and

characteristics. The number of sentences tested are ten pieces consisting of

simple sentences and rather complex sentences, containing statement

sentences, questions, commands and exclamation sentence.

ABSTRAK

Students have difficulties in writing and understanding the 2013 curriculum

especially the observation report text. The difficulties are often found in

determining the structure of the text and linguistic factors. The purpose of this

study is to describe the results of learning to write text by using a web-based

Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) model. This type of research is

quantitative with the descriptive method. The population of this study is all

students of class X SMAN 12 Padang. The sampling technique in this study is

purposive sampling. The sample was 36 students of grade 1 IPA. The data in

this study was the writing skill observation result report score taken from class

X students of SMAN 12 Padang. The instrument of this research is obtained

through performance tests. The results of the research indicators of the text

structure, the general definition of the average value of 94.44 in the range of

86-95% classified as excellent, description of the average value of 81.48 at the

level of mastery 75-85% are well qualified, the definition of the benefits of the

average value average 70.37 at the level of mastery 66-75% qualified more

than enough, and the language factors, in this case, the verb with a value of

83.33 is in the range of 78-85% with good quality. Thus the results of the

research for the writing skills of the report text using the web-based Student

Teams Achievement Division (STAD) model obtained an average score of

82.41 at the mastery level of 76-85% with good quality.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the need for an Indonesian language

teaching model for Extraordinary School that needs to be developed. The data

in this article was collected through a closed questionnaire distribution to 12

teachers who taught at the Dian Kahuripan Extraordinary School at Elementary

School level. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the process

of collecting data through observation for approximately 1 month, interviews

to two teachers, and questionnaires. Through this study, it was found that the

Indonesian language teaching model used at the Dian Kahuripan Extraordinary

School at the elementary school level still has a simple teaching model that was

naturally general. Hence there are still limitations and insufficiency to meet the

needs of students with special needs (mental retarded, down syndrome, and

autism) who adjust the 2013 curriculum in the use of technology in the

teaching and learning process. The results of the needs analysis based on R&D

show that multimedia-based I-Mol Indonesian language teaching model

expected to be an integrated and relevant teaching model with the 2013

curriculum so it can support the speaking skills of children with special needs

(mentally retarded, down syndrome, and autism). Thus, it can be understood

that the Indonesian language teaching model based on multimedia I-Mol for

speaking skills is needed.

ABSTRACT

Though much has been written about the positive impacts of educational drama

on students‟ reading and writing development, we know little about students‟

personal approaches when responding to texts through educational drama

strategies in the classroom. This article presents a case of two fifth grade

students who worked individually and collaboratively by using dramatic

strategies called Biographical Wax Museum and Character Interview for

evoking response and providing depth in meaning making. The case study is

part of a 16-week research study that investigated the implementation of

educational drama approaches in a language arts classroom of a charter Islamic

school in the midwestern part of America. Drawing upon transactional theory

of reading, research about educational drama, and strategic actions of text

processing of reading, I observed, videotaped, and conducted personal

interviews in 16 weeks. I analysed the two students‟ verbal interactions as they

were co-constructing meaning with texts, with each other, and with other

people while role-playing historical and fictional figures. The study identified

that Maya, an enthusiastic reader, and Heaven, a reluctant reader, shared some

similar range of strategic actions like inquiring for more information, making

connections and responding to the classroom literature when they individually

transacted with texts, differing only in their text productions and styles of

performance. However, situated by their roles and the objectives of the

dramatic performance, both performed different action strategies while

working together to create a dramatic performance.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyse the character values contained in the students‟

textbooks in The 2013 Curriculum 2013 for grade 1 of Elementary School

semester 1 with the theme "Pengalamanku". This research is a content analysis

with a qualitative approach. The object as well as the data sources of this

research was The 2013 Curriculum for grade 1 of Elementary School semester

1 with the theme "Pengalamanku” which consisted of four sub-themes namely

childhood experiences, experiences with friends, experiences in school, and

memorable experiences. The results showed that most of the values of

character education were dispersed across each sub-theme, although some

character values were not evenly distributed across all sub-themes. The

findings indicated the characters found in the textbook: religious character,

nationalism, integrity, independence and mutual cooperation. The character of

mutual cooperation dominated the findings for about 40% from the whole

characters identified. The findings suggested teachers and educators to provide

students with adequate learning exposure containing character education as a

ABSTRACT

This research aims to describe the implementation of differentiated flipped

classroom (flipperentiated) model that uses stations instructional strategy in

students‟ learning and its impact to students' cognitive learning outcomes,

problem-solving skills development, and learning motivation. The background

of the research began with a concern in the flipped classroom model that had

been implemented in Biology class of XYZ Senior High School, where no

significant improvements were observed in the students‟ problem-solving

skills, learning motivation, and assessment result, especially in low achievers.

Preliminary research showed the different needs from individual students; thus,

differentiated learning is required especially in the face-to-face meeting in

class. Differentiated learning aims to facilitate the different needs of the

students based on the level of readiness, learning style preference, and interest.

The method used in this research is classroom action research, and the data is

collected through observation, interview, field notes, questionnaires, and

evaluation of assessment results based on a rubric and mark schemes. The

collected data is processed and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative

approach. Results of the research indicated improvements in students‟

problem-solving skills, high average in motivation indicators, and a significant

improvement in cognitive learning outcomes.

ABSTRACT

This research focuses on how the rhetoric strategies in the Qur'an are used.

This research uses content analysis method with qualitative approach. The data

in this study are words, phrases, sentences in the text of the translation of the

ayahs of the Glorious Qur'an surah Albaqarah ayah 1 to ayah 286. The

procedure applied in the analysis of the data is the inductive model procedure.

The model of the development of the rhetorical strategies used in the

discussion is the model developed by Stephen Toulmin. The results showed

that the model development strategies IV i.e. G.W. B C (ground, warrant,

backing to support the claim). The other model that is of tenly used is the

alternative model. It is another model appeared aside from what Toulmin has

given, W. B C (warrant and backing to support a claim). Model W. B C is

used as much as 7 times or of 17.5%. The next strategy model that also is a

widely used is alternative models W.B. Q C (warrant, backing, and qualified

support to the claim) and the model V is used 5 times (12.5%). Next is the

model of strategy III (Ground + Warrant Claim), used four times or by 10%

and the model I (Ground Claim), model II (Ground-n n-Claim), model W

C, and model W. R C each used 1 time or amounting to 2.5%. All claims

are expressed using the rhetorical strategies that is complex. That is, a claim

supported by more than one fact either parallel or not parallel. In fact, there are

few facts and data (ground), reinforced with a justification or validation data

(warrant), reinforced again with power support (backing support) to strengthen

ABSTRACT

This article discusses a number of concepts relating to Rejang language

teaching which is started from the design of syllabus and implementation of

teaching materials. The research is based on empirical studies of syllabus and

teaching materials used today in the classroom. There is a crucial problem

between the curriculum and its application because all this time the school uses

teaching materials irrelevant to the curriculum and syllabus that are designed

and determined by the local Education Authorities. The logical consequence of

this problem is the teachers have difficulty to teach Rejang language learning

in the classroom. This study uses the development approach of the Borg and

Gall model, with steps: reviewing literatures, field observations, documentation

studies, and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed into consideration in

designing the syllabus and teaching materials of Rejang language. The

findings of the study describe the syllabus, namely aspects of learning

objectives, material focus, methods and evaluation. Meanwhile, the findings of

teaching material include: interest in teaching materials, the validity and

reliability of the materials, the ability to attract, the value of the material and

students' perceptions of teaching materials. The implication of this research is

the design of syllabus and teaching materials referring to the needs of teachers

and students as stakeholders of education. For this reason, it is important to

capture needs that are synergy with the curriculum and teaching materials.

ABSTRACT

The low percentage of PPG SM-3T graduates (41.26%) in 2017 and several

study programs did not pass (0%) cause this program must be comprehensively

evaluated using the context, input, process & product (CIPP) model. In

addition, capability of evaluation is an absolute capability that must be

possessed by humans in the industrial revolution 4.0. This evaluation research

was carried out in the Department of Civil Engineering (Building Tehcnique

Education/PTB), Engineering Faculty, Universitas Negeri Padang (interviewed

lecturer) & online questionnaire (for PPG SM-3T participants). The program

has been implemented in accordance with its context and has been in

accordance with the inputs specified in the program implementation guidelines.

But there are problems in the process of program implementation (79.51%),

which has the lowest value. The reason is that the low value of the evaluation

process is the difference between materials tested with those taught during the

program, lack of socialization and communication, and discipline. However,

product evaluation states that this program has been carried out as evidenced

by the results that participant have the competencies needed to become

professional teachers. So the conclusion is the PPG SM-3T program is worthy

ABSTRACT

Tourism is one of the fields that has become the focus of community economic

development. Placement of various cultural events in Banyuwangi Fesival

(CBF) is one of the strategies that has proven effective in increasing the

number of domestic and foreign tourists to Banyuwangi. The long-term goal to

be achieved is the realization of local culture-based education in Banyuwangi

Traditional, ritual and culinary arts in Banyuwangi which are packaged into

agrarian culture-based festivals and tours can be witnessed every year in

Banyuwangi. The development of culinary-based agrarian tourism, also

contains strategic value because it provides an educational space for tourists

and the community in the agricultural area which is a tourist destination. The

educational space allows the growing awareness and love of society towards

agrarian culture and its natural environment. Tourism development also has a

cross-sectoral economic chain, such as lodging, transportation, culinary,

souvenirs, agrarian tour packages, and guides. The art of tradition, the Seblang

Bakungan ritual, Seblang Olehsari, Kebo-keboan, coffee processing festival,

and ngopi sepuluh ewu festival, have been included in the CBF. This has the

potential to bring visitors in large numbers and become an opportunity for the

community to socialize and market creative industry products. By using

ethnographic methods, research begins with collecting library data. Library

data is completed with field data obtained through observation, participation,

and in-depth interviews with selected informants. Data analysis and meaning

are carried out in cultural studies and treat data as a cultural sign.

ABSTRACT

Every ethnic has its own way to sharpen intelligence, both the cognitive

intelligence and affective intelligence of the next generation, including the

community of Angkola Mandailing ethnic. Kuling-kuling anca as a kind of

"puzzles" is means of "using the brain" of the community, especially children

to teenagers in Angkola Mandailing while they are gathering. In the game of

kuling-kuling anca, there are various positive things, among others, sharpening

intelligence and sensitivity to the environment. Kuling-kuling anca contains

value of local wisdom which is used to form the character building of children

to continue the national building by using the ancestral cultural heritage which

is included in the local wisdom. Nowadays, kuling-kuling anca as traditional

games is rarely found, it can even be said to be almost extinct. This study aims

to describe kuling-kuling ancaas one of the local wisdom of the Angkola

Mandailing ethnic games to sharpen the nation's intelligence that can be used

to anticipate the bad influence of online games and gadgets. Kuling-kuling

anca games were conducted in PAUD and Elementary Schools in the Angkola

Mandailing area, namely Padangsidemouan dan Gunung Tua.The kuling-kuling

anca obtained were described and presented in the form of narrative texts,

videos, and interpreted through the synthesis of content. Furthermore, it was

verified so that the intelligence can be illustrated and these was caused by the

kuling-kuling anca games. The results of this study indicate that in order to be

able to answer the culinary culms one must recognize the form, character,

character, etc. about the answers referred to in the kuling-kuling anca so that

the right answers are found. With kuling-kuling anca, someone's intelligence

will be honed and able to give satisfaction to someone who can answer it

because it is superior to other people who cannot answer it.

the current Madurese language learning process. However, exactly, the

syllabus used now does not reflect the needs of students; because the

formulation of the Madura language syllabus as a local content does not

involve the teaching teacher in the school. The teacher only implements the

syllabus designed by the East Java provincial education office. Therefore, the

lessons given by the teacher are far from what students expect in terms of their

abilities. This study aims to provide an overview of the currently used Madura

language syllabus used in elementary schools in Pamekasan. Retrieval of this

research data by conducting interviews with teachers in three schools, SD

Lawangan Daya, SD Islam Terpadu Al-Irsyad and SD Cenlecen 1. This study

used the max method that is descriptive qualitative on the existing syllabus and

analysis of the results of open interviews with respondents who could be

presented with percentage. The results showed that 1) the syllabus used now is

the same syllabus with the same syllabus used in the East Java region, 2) the

syllabus used is still common as the local content of the Madurese language, 3)

the Madura language syllabus currently lacks local wisdom, 4 ) There are

topics that are not suitable for elementary school students. So, with the results

of this analysis, the Madura language syllabus currently in use still needs to be

improved for the future as local content to preserve the Madurese language.

ABSTRACT

This research aims at analysing the perceptions of Math teachers to teachers‟

professional development in the Subject Teacher Forum (STF), consisting of

five indicators, namely: 1) program structure, 2) administrator‟s readiness, 3)

teacher‟s needs, 4) values & motivation, and 5) institutional support. The

approach used is a descriptive quantitative. The data was collected by using a

Likert scale to collaborate with a questionnaire, where the data source is all

members of targeted population of 40 respondents. This research population is

participants of Math‟s STF in Junior High School in the region of Tangerang,

Indonesia. The data analysis employs the Importance-Performance Analysis

(IPA) tools. The research results point out that program structure,

administrator‟s readiness, and institutional support are considered as High

Importance categories, whereas teacher‟s needs as well as values & motivation

belong to Low Importance categories. Moreover, the actual performance for

program structure and values & motivation are revealed in the categories of

High Performance, while the administrator‟s readiness, teacher‟s needs, as well

as institutional support are in the categories of Low Performance. The top

priority attributes that need to be fixed in accordance to IPA quadrant map are

learning models‟ simulation, study of learning device, program and activity‟s

budget, availability of media/activity aids and appreciation/recognition of

teacher‟s performance.

ABSTRACT

As a particular ceremony that is specifically celebrated by Sundanese people in

West Java, Seren Taun (which means thanksgiving in many countries) has

unique and different meanings in terms of practice (Kurnia, 2014). Kampung

Urug (the village Urug), located in Bogor, is the main focus of this research.

Seren Taun that is practiced and celebrated every year has received a lot of

attention from both national and local media, government, and researchers

(Andayani, 2006). Practicing Sunda Wiwitan, in the area, Abah Ukat as the key

figure in Kampung Urug received criticisms since this traditional belief isn‟t

always accepted by the majority of Indonesian people who are mostly muslims.

This study will critically explore the role of Abah Ukat and his strategies to

both maintain and develop Kampung Urug. Methods of this research is using

cultural studies approach with ethnography method. Cultural studies approach

of this research is hegemony theory (Gramsci, 1992). Another theory for this

study is soft power (Nye, 2004). Hegemony will be used to describe Abah

Ukat‟s power as a leader in Urug Village. In addition, soft power is used to

explain about cultural strategy in Urug Village. The result of this research is

Abah Ukat has power to make regulation, laws and sanction over Urug‟s

residents. His actions are able to make Urug Village as Tourist village become

reality and the village itself will become well-known to many people.

ABSTRACT

The dynamics of people's lives cannot be separated from the existence of

literary life as part of the culture. Oral literature as a form of oral traditions is

spread in various circles of society. Because of the very rapid dynamics of

society with various global influences, it is in concern that the younger

generation is less interested in oral literature and more interested in the

glittering advancement of the world. The form and type of oral literature of

theTegalan need to be revealed as one of the Javanese inheritances. This

research aims to analyze the conceptualization based on the experience that is

felt by the body, the nature of conceptualization, characteristic based on

conceptualization, strength based on conceptualization, and conceptualization

based on function. To achieve this goal, this study used qualitative and

pragmatic approach. The focus of this study was on the associative strategy of

metaphorical expressions of the Tegalan oral literature. The research data were

the types and forms of oral literature of the Tegalan Javanese ethnicity. The

form of the data was fragments of discourse upon the type and form of oral

literature of theTegalan ethnicity. The data were collected by recording,

listening, and noting technique. The sorting process was in line with the

procedure of method. Data analysis activities used referential identity method

and introspective reflexive method. The results revealed that the meaning of

metaphorical expressions of oral literature of theTegalan ethnicity based on

comparative theory was (1) objects to express objects, (2) objects to express

conditions, (3) objects to express actions, (4) places to express places, (5)

places to express circumstances, (6) actions to express actions, (7) actions to

ABSTRACT

Violence against women is actually not a new experience faced by women

throughout the world. India, which is portrayed as a country that respects and

adores women through the story of the Goddess, in fact has complexity in

women's issues. This is marked by a surprising finding by Thomson Reuters

Foundation in 2018 which stated that India is the world‟s most dangerous

country for women. Referring to the issue, this research aims to reveal how the

biographical novel criticizes misogynistic views in Indian modern era. This can

be seen through the marriage of a married couple from different caste classes.

The husband is a person who belongs to the upper caste and works as a lecturer

in the field of literature whose the title of professor. He also claims himself as

communism adherent who gets involved in political and revolutionary

movement that fight for social justice. Meanwhile, the wife comes from the

middle class and works as a young feminist writer. In analyzing the data / text,

the researcher applied a feminist literary criticism approach combined with the

concept of gender écriture feminine by Helene Cixous to see the independence

of the main character at once the narrator in voicing her feminine world such as

happiness, desire (to fight back), and her freedom. Meanwhile, the method

used is qualitative method. The results shows that Indian women who have

sufficient class and power remain very vulnerable when faced with caste and

patriarchal domination. This research also shows that the misogynistic view is

not only believed by Indian the lower class men. In other words, groups that

have a high level of literacy are also very likely to have extreme misogynistic

views.

ABSTRACT

Discussion of identity refers to various kinds of issues, such as social, political,

and cultural. One issue of identity is in the form of cultural identity in short

story on media. The concept of cultural identity is something that is not

immediately formed but a process that will never be completed and manifested

in a representation. The researcher examines this study using Norman

Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory. Through this theory the

researcher can make critical reflections to reveal the interests of the analyst.

This study describes how the representation of cultural identity in a collection

of short stories on media through text analysis. The approach used is

qualitative to understand the phenomenon of what is experienced by the subject

of research such as behavior, perceptions, motivations, actions, etc. Data

collection techniques were carried out by downloading short stories through

Republika's e-paper, then interviewing short story writers, describing,

analyzing, and interpreting based on critical discourse analysis techniques. The

findings of this study reveal that there are issues of cultural identity represented

through text by looking at vocabulary and grammar. Based on the findings, it

can be concluded that the study of cultural identity representation can reveal

ideology and the hidden aspects of the short text by looking at linguistic

elements through the structure of the language used.

TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH

ABSTRACT

Translation is an interesting part of applied linguistics. Translation converts messages from source language (Bsu) into the target language (BSA), for instance, translating Indonesian messages into English. In performing translation activities, translators often face a number of problems, one of which is problem regarding the cultural content or the cultural differences between Bsu and Bsa. In this case, translators are often put in a dilemmatic condition where they have to choose either to maintain the cultural content from Bsu or adapting the content to the Bsa. Related to the translators‟ alignments on this matter, Venuti has proposed the concept of translation ideology. In regards to the role of ideology of translation, this research was carried out to describe the ideology of translation applied in the translation of a novel entitled Sukreni Gadis Bali. This qualitative research was conducted using the content analysis method which was not bounded by place. This research regarded lingustic data including words, phrases and utterances that contained the elements of Balinese culture found in the novel Sukreni Gadis Bali and an equivalent novel entitled The Rape of Sukreni. Data collection was administered to determine the unit of analysis in the form of linguistic units (words, phrases, and utterances), which contain cultural elements in TSu and TSa. The obtained data were then analyzed based on the translation ideology theory proposed by Venuti. The results showed that there was an influence of exile ideology in the translation work on the vocabulary about culture. Domestication ideology occurred 22 times (73.33%), while foreignization ideology appeared 8 times (26.66%). Therefore, domestication translation has been found as the dominant ideology used by the translator. Domestication focuses on the acceptance of the target culture and language in order to make the translated text easier to read and to be understood by target readers. This method was done by replacing the cultural elements in the BSu with similar cultural elements and in the BSa since cultural elements in BSa were regarded more familiar to the target readers. This method is commonly used by translators as they expect the target readers to understand the text message without being confused by unfamiliar terms that might affect their fluency in understanding the message. . ABSTRACT

Language usage flexibility is a common thing shown in the comment sections

on various online media. This phenomenon emerges in the politeness of

language usage in readers‟ responses. By using the Appraisal System and

CMDA (Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis), this study aims at

describing the meaning of chosen words by readers and revealing

communication context in readers‟ responses to the Baiq Nuril case on

Detik.com. The research data was from the top half of the readers‟ which had

the highest level of popularity in the comments section. It took from three Baiq

Nuril popular news texts; the popularity is based on the highest number of

readers‟ responses. As a result, this research found two things. First, the

commenters used words that tend to judge and have a negative meaning.

Second, the communication context in readers‟ responses toward sexual

harassment news tend to intimidate, humiliate, and confront either the news‟

content or among the readers' responses. These results show that a

controversial theme of a news text may lead to get many negative responses.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify the language dimensions contained in the textbook.

Language dimensions are examined in terms of linguistic aspects which

include the components of phonological grammar, morphology, syntax,

semantics, and discourse. Various components of grammar are formulated

based on the Indonesian Grammar Model which is included in scientific or

linguistics grammar and educational grammar models in pedagogical grammar;

and studies of various theories of grammar dimensions. This research was

conducted in the frame of a qualitative approach using content analysis

techniques for written discourses in the form of teaching materials with a focus

on aspects of the grammar component developed in junior high school

Indonesian textbooks through intensive reading and recording abstractions that

identify the existence of grammatical forms. From the five aspects analyzed by

the components of grammar, phonology, morphology, syntax, and discourse

identified in the textbook explicitly. Meanwhile, the components of discourse

grammar are implicitly identified. Phonological aspects include the study of

speech sounds, namely how sound is produced (phonetic study), and how

sound is symbolized (phonemic study). The aspect of morphology is related to

the formation of good words that are related to various morphological

processes as well as to the class of words. Syntactic aspects include parts of

sentence units, sentence functions, and sentence intonation. Semantic aspects

are related to aspects of meaning. Individually or simultaneously, the

component aspects of grammar found are applications in building

communicative competencies. Standard pronunciation aspects, word class

forms, and affixation processes, compound sentence arrangements or passive

sentences, proper use of diction, and the use of cohesion in creating

paragraphs, texts, and discourses to be used and produce effective sentences in

communication. The research findings are recommended in the context of

developing and strengthening educational grammar as well as input in

designing and compiling Indonesian language textbooks.

ABSTRACT

The way children view the world is a process of thinking critically that

reflected through language expressions that can be seen from pragmatic

strategy in giving argumentation. To date, the study on child‟s language in

Indonesian is only focused on the form and structure of argumentative

sentences. Meanwhile, the study that is focused on child‟s language viewed

from gender perspective has not yet been conducted significantly, especially

that is related to the argumentation strategy. Hence, the study of this paper will

be focused on child‟s pragmatic strategy reviewed from gender perspective.

The subject and object of this study covered the use of sentence on children

aged 5-6 years old. The study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data

were collected using participated and non-participated observation methods.

The data then were analyzed using the pragmatic match method. The result of

this study showed that there were some differences between the boys and girls

reviewed from the frequency intensity of the uttered argumentation types and

the pragmatic strategy in expressing intention. The girls had better abilities in

qualitative and comparison-typed argumentations. On the other hand, the boys

were better in analogy-typed argumentations. Either the boys or girls had equal

ability in argumentations type quantity and expert opinion. In the use of

pragmatic strategy, the boys used more representative strategy than the girls. In

contrast, the girls were skilled in arguing using control, expressive, and social

strategies than the boys.

ABSTRACT

Textbooks hold a critical position in EFL classrooms. Studies reveal their

significant influence on teachers‟ classroom practices and their reliance on

them. Their role is even more significant in the context of curriculum

innovation. Many studies have investigated various aspects of the secondary

school textbooks published by Indonesian MOEC. Very few of them, however,

focus on instructional alignment in textbook design. Instructional alignment is

commonly associated with “good teaching”, and a quality textbook should be a

model of good teaching and facilitate students‟ language learning. This study

examines textbook design of instruction for alignment among its instructional

objectives, activities and assessment components. Mayring's model of

deductive qualitative content analysis and Bloom's Revised Taxonomy table

were employed to collect data for the study. Sample data was then reviewed by

a panel of ELT Materials Development experts for validation purposes.

Findings reveal that a significant amount of partial alignment and misalignment

exist across sample chapters of the study. Further discussions of the findings

and recommendations for improved design of the textbook are presented in the

paper

ABSTRACT

Learning is a process of interaction between students and educators and

learning resources, one of them is teaching material. Teaching materials must

be self-instructional, self-contained, stand-alone, adaptive, and user-friendly.

However, teaching materials are currently not sufficient to be used, so it needs

to be developed so that the learning process is more practical and effective. The

objectives of this study are 1) to design and implement mobile-based e-

modules, 2) to know the responses of students and lecturers to the development

of mobile-based e-modules, and 3) to know the students learning outcomes

after using mobile-based e-modules. Type of Research and Development

research with 4-D model. The study participants were 54 students and 4

lecturers of Building Engineering Education. To know the responses of

students and lecturers to the development of mobile-based e-modules, data was

obtained using the questionnaire method. From the results of testing the

practicality of modules by students, the average score of 86 (Very Practical), as

well as from lecturers with an average of 89 (Very Practical). Against learning

outcomes 100% were declared to pass with a Gain-Score of 0.44. Thus the E-

learning module developed for Project Management courses is said to be Good

ABSTRACT

The training program to develop human resource competence need the structure of curriculum and syllabus-based competencies are often termed as competency-based curriculum (cbt). Cbt curriculum design means using competency profiles as a basis for conducting needs analysis training. A framework that is useful in the analysis of the factor is called a "front end analysis". Analysis of the front end is a component of the model of human performance technology (hpt), which is a systematic approach to improving productivity and competence. In the model of performance technology (hpt), performance gaps are identified on a front-end analysis phase, which consists of the causal analysis and performance. In the addie model, the performance gaps identified during the model of the "front end" at this stage of the analysis, or on the training needs assessment phase. Hpt is a generation following after the instructional technology used in the industry. Simply put, instructional technologies focus on improving learning outcomes, and human performance technology focuses on increased human performance or the performance of the organization, as learning outcomes. Hpt process begins with a comparison of the current state and the desired level of performance of individuals and organizations to identify the performance gap (gap analysis). Analysis of the cause is then performed to determine what the impact on the working environment (information, resources, and incentives) and performance people (motives, individual capacities and skills). The evaluation is done after each stage of the process. Initially, formative evaluation assesses the performance analysis, cause analysis, selection and design of interventions, interventions and changes of phase. Then evaluation focuses on responses directly from the employee and the ability and willingness to perform the desired behavior. The final evaluation based on improved business outcomes (such as quality, productivity, sales, customer retention, profitability, and market share) as well as determine the profit on investment for the implementation of the intervention.

ABSTRACT

The main problem addressed in this study is the large number of ancient

manuscripta that have not been revealed in the content and only limited to the

study of the textual criticism. One of them the results of the research conducted

by H. Sanwani Sanusi, who only converted and edit the words of the Hikayat

Ghulam manuscript. This text, however, has many values in it if studied.

Therefore, the aim of this study was to reveal the religious contents of Hikayat

Ghulam text and to pass the nation's culture on to the next generation. A

descriptive qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach was used in this

research. The design included an initial stage where several literature studies

were searched and data collected by a careful reading of the text and transfer of

the script. This was followed by the identification and classification of the data

according to the problems highlighted in the study. Furthermore, a validity test

was conducted through the use of triangulation techniques. The results showed

there are religious contents in the text of Hikayat Ghulam indicated by faith,

Islam, ihsan, science, and charity. The faith aspect found include faith in God,

the Prophet, and destiny while the Islam aspect involved implementation of

worship such as prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and alms. Furthermore, the Ihsan

had to do with the feelings about the presence of God through repentance,

following His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. The science was

found to include the knowledge of the verses of the Koran and the hadith of the

Prophet as suggested in Q.S. Ali-Imran: 159 and the prohibition on following

passions in Q.S. Al-Jasiyah: 23. The charity was centered around community

life, including helping people who are weak and distressed, doing charitable

deeds, being fair, forgiving each other, and working to fulfill life. The result of

this study can be applied in literary learning in schools related to understanding

the content of the hicays.

INDONESIAN POLITICS OF EDUCATION IN POST

INDEPENDENCE: A TORN IDEALISM

Umasih

Universitas Negeri Jakarta

[email protected]

ABSTRACT

This article discusses how the politics of education in Indonesia after

independence on August 17, 1945. As an independent nation, Indonesia should

have a clear purpose and direction about how education is organized. Efforts to

realize national education appear to be successful with the issuance of Law No.

4 of 1950 concerning the Principles of Education and Teaching that apply to

the Republic of Indonesia (Java, Madura, and Sumatra). Along with the

political dynamics and the desire of the RIS states to join the unitary State of

the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) on August 17, 1950, the national education

system law finally came into effect for the entire NKRI region into Law

Number 12 of 1954. The various ideals that are the priority of education

development step by step are carried out in accordance with the government-

owned budget. However, political life has contributed to the education policy

and is so dominant when Manipol-USDEK has truly become the Broad

Outlines of State Policy, so that education is also Manipolis education which

refers to the Pancawardhana education system. This means that the Basic Law

on Education and Teaching is no longer a reference in the implementation of

the national education system. Manipolis education aims to produce patriotic,

democratic, and manipulative experts. The Manipolis characterized education

system must prepare new people as development cadres who are experts,

patriots, democrats, and aspire to socialism. Even this political education did

not work as it did when the PKI intervention was so great in the

implementation of education until the September 30th Movement.

ABSTRACT

The title underlying this study was the effect of Task-Based Reading Activity (TBRA) on vocabulary achievement of the second grade learners at SMPN 24 Samarinda. The purposes of this study were to investigate the learners‟ vocabulary achievement taught with Task-Based Reading Activity. The researcher wanted to find out whether there were any significant effects on learners‟ vocabulary achievement with and without Task-Based Reading Activity. The design of this study was quasi experimental. The population was all the eighth grade learners in SMPN 24 Samarinda that consisted of 7 (seven) classes with the total number of learners was 222. Two classes were used as the sample of eighth grade learners namely class 8F as the experimental class and class 8E as the control class. 30 learners in experimental class used TBRA while teaching and learning process in the classroom and 30 learners in control class used conventional method while teaching and learning process in the classroom. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to collect the data by giving test that consists of 40 multiple choice items. The data analyzed used T-test by using SPSS version 25. The researcher used T-test in order to find out the significant difference on vocabulary achievement before and after being taught by Task-Based Reading Activity. The findings of this study showed that, in experimental class the mean score in pre-test was 66.77 and it increased to 77.25 in post-test. It also showed that the result of Sig. 2-tailed was lower than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). Another T-test computation was used in order to see the significant effect between control class and experimental class. The post-test mean score of experimental class was 77.25 and in control class was 69.03. It also showed that the result of Sig. 2-tailed was lower than significant level (0.001 < 0.05). Thus based on the result of the two T-test above it can be concluded that the Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. By looking at the analysis of the research findings, it can be concluded that the effect on vocabulary achievement between experimental and control class which taught with and without Task-Based Reading Activity seemed to be significant. It meant that vocabulary achievement taught by TBRA was better than taught by conventional method.

ABSTRACT

Developing a learning model for a course of a study program is normally

preceded by a need analysis and is done thoroughly by investigating the

teachers‟ and students‟ needs, and the current situation related to the course to

be developed. As one of the sources of the need analysis activities, the

teachers‟ current practices and expectations are being analyzed which will lead

to the real situation related to the course. This study was aimed at revealing the

teachers‟ current practices in grammar classrooms and their expectations of a

grammar learning model at the English Education Study Program of

Universitas Bengkulu, Indonesia. It was a qualitative study involving two

English grammar teachers at the university. The data were taken by using an

observation checklist and field notes, and an interview guide, and were

analyzed qualitatively. The findings show that the teachers did not state the

aims of learning English grammar, did not give any syllabus to the students,

used the deductive approach and presentation technique, and use only a

commercial book for teaching the English grammar. Besides, the teachers

expect to have a grammar learning model that puts the priority on English

tenses and parts of speech materials, has the attitude and participation

assessments as well as a variety of appropriate tests for grammar learning.

ABSTRACT

One of the problems faced by the Indonesian nation today is environmental

problem. The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry reports that

pollution of air, water and land as a result of industrialization is a major issue

that is urgently needed to be addressed, followed by the problem of climate

change and depletion of natural resources. To overcome this problem, everyone

must take responsibility, including those who work in academic areas and

learning. Ecofeminism is a social thought and movement present in the

academic area. Developed by scientists who feel they must take responsibility

for maintaining the environment. This paper aims to explain how the thoughts

and movements of ecofeminism are also the concern of Indonesian scientists

and writers. Evidently many studies on ecofeminism have been carried out with

the object of studying Indonesian literary works. In addition, a number of

Indonesian writers also created literary works with the theme of ecofeminism.

This study also shows how ecofeminism is implemented in classroom learning,

especially the Indonesian Literature study program at Universitas Negeri

Yogyakarta. Through this learning, the students are not only invited to read and

analyze literary works that are accusing the ecofeminism issue, but also have

an awareness of the importance of environmental ethics. Furthermore, they are

expected to also be part of the ecofeminism movement in the community.

ABSTRACT

Metaphor is figurative and cultural. A translator should be capable of making a

good translation by applying correct strategies such as transposition and

modulation (Vinay and Dalbernet 1977), foreignisation, and domestication

(Venuti, 1995, 2012). This research focused on metaphors from the french

novel Vingt-mille lieues Sous Les Mers of Jules Verne and their translated

forms into indonesian in the novel 20 000 Mil di Bawah Lautan by Nh. Dini.

This study aimed at finding a profound comprehension of strategies

implemented in translating metaphor from french to indonesian, to achieve the

equivalence of the message between source language (SL) and target language

(TL). Besides, the researcher also attempts to reveal the types of shift

happening and the reason of shift. This qualitative research used content

analysis. The result of the study showed that the equivalence between SL and

TL was obtained by translating metaphors with transposition and modulation. ,

foreignisation were used more frequently than domestication. Those strategies

caused 1) grammatical, 2) figurative and non figurative, and 3)meaning shifts.

Some strategies were absolutely needed to get the meaning equivalence. It was

concluded that the shifts the different cultures and system of french and

Indonesian were important factors causing shifts.

ABSTRACT

In the literary genre there are various teaching materials that can be filled,

interpreted, and inserted cultural diversity that is implemented in attitudes and

teachings that can reveal messages that humanize humans. So, cultural

diversity not only as art in literature in the form of just material having no

empty soul is worthless. Language and literature as a tool to humanize its

meaning is that students have a position as honorable human beings as human

beings who are fully human beings. This modern era education is not only

about printing students like a machine so that teachers, students, and teaching

materials must be creative in order to realize the attitude of loving literature as

an appreciation of cultural diversity. Teaching languages can be done through

literature, as well as cultural learning that encourages the desire to express

these things in the form of literary writing. This research is a qualitative

research with descriptive methods whose results focus on educators and

students who are educated more sensitive and creative towards literature as

cultural diversity so that students are able to appreciate literary works and can

even write a simple literary work on their own. In addition, it will develop a

positive response in people's thoughts and feelings, develop and foster positive

values in accordance with the implications of learning literature.

METAPHORS IN MUTANABBI‟S POETRY

AS A DESCRIPTION OF THE ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITY OF

THE ARABIC: A LITERARY ECOLOGY STUDY

Zuriyati

Arabic Language Education, Faculty of Language and Art,

Jakarta State University, Jakarta, Indonesia

[email protected]

ABSTRACT

This study aims to gain an understanding of the meaning of the metaphors used

by Mutanabbi in describing humanist values in his poetry. The metaphors

inherent in Mutanabbipoetry are inseparable from his reflection on the

surrounding natural phenomena. In other words, the understanding that will be

found includes the description of the human ecosystem with nature. The

importance of analyzing the meaning of this metaphor is motivated by the lack

of students' ability to understand metaphors especially in Arabic poetry. This

study is expected to be able to increase student‟s sensitivity in harmonizing

life. This study used a qualitative method of content analysis with a literary

ecology approach and literary semiotics. The result of the study shows that the

metaphors used by Mutanabbi are: 12 frequencies (2 6.09 %) in the Being

category, 5 frequencies (10.87%) in the Cosmos category, 10 frequencies

(21.74%) in Energy category, 6 frequencies (13.04) in Terrestrial category, 7

frequencies (15.22%) in Living category, 3 frequencies (6.52%) in Animate

category, 3 frequencies (6.52%) in Human category. These figures mean that

Mutanabbi is the poet who is very inspired by natural phenomena; in other

words, the beauty of poetry can be seen in terms of literary ecology. Thus, this

research can provide and understanding of the way humans understand the

meaning o life about something that has been made by God.
