Respected,

ASME UET has its roots spread across all the departments of the institution and hence it

brings in a lot of color and flavor to the society. The diverse minds belonging to the different

departments of the university brings in a lot of innovative ideas too.

The executive body of ASME UET is extremely professional and hence has recently organized and brilliantly managed DAG that provided student a series of interactive activities to benchmark their talents with reference to basic science knowledge. These events have attracted students from all over and helped in imparting engineering knowledge particularly among secondary grade students.

The diversity grant, ASME had approved to this section has been utilized in its most efficient

and most effective way. The whole functioning of DAG has been done under my supervision.

It has inspired more than 1200 minuscule students of the various schools of Lahore. Young

woman were also made to participate in this program for the woman empowerment in a

competitive world. The platform of ASME has been promoted and has aroused a lot of

followers. This platform is undoubtedly best for learners and for aspirants of novelty. Hope

that this procedure and program will continue in future and will be executed in a better way

and ASME UET will be selected again and again for this cause.

Thank you again for considering ASME UET for DAG and I am very pleased to have this group

of students working under the name of ASME.

Best Regards,

ASME UET Student Chapter

History and Strength:

UNIVERSITY Of ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY LAHORE established in 1921 is one of

the best institutions of higher learning in the country and ranks among one of the top ten

universities in "engineering technology category" by HEC; in addition, the university

continuously secures its ranking amongst top 300 Asian institutions of science and

technology with having more than 25 undergraduate degree programs and 55 postgraduate

degree programs with the extent to accommodate 10,000 students including 738

international students.

UET Lahore regulate more than 15 technical and non-technical societies, most

prominent of them is ASME UET. Since the establishment of ASME UET, we have achieved

numerous milestones and achievements. ASME UET was established in 2006 in UET Lahore

aiming to extend its effectiveness throughout the nation and enrich the youth of the

country by developing technicality and professional attitude in them. Presently we have 325

international members from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore as well as

ASME UET’s members. We believe to shine not only within the nation but throughout the

world in international arena.

Following the basic concept of promoting technical world among young enthusiasts

in a most appropriate learning environment, we have organized several remarkable events

in local, national and international level throughout the span of 10 years. Some of our

successes are MECHNO 11, MECHNO 12, U-Week, Sky Lantern and UET OLYMPIAD. We have

more than 10 technical sections divided into mechanical division projects and allied division

projects. This aimed at bringing diversity in ASME including members from all departments

and faculties of engineering. By this, we participate in several national and international

competitions every year like HPVAC, NERC, Airex, SDC, etc. Apart from these, ASME UET also

organizes some signature events like Student Speed Design Contest (SSDC), Skill Knowledge

and Aptitude Test (SKAT) every year.

2

A brief detail of some of the marked events that ASME UET has organized last year is

as follows:

UET OLYMPIAD 2015

It was a national level event in which more than 15 universities of Pakistan had been

invited to join the platform of learning and to develop a better sense of

understanding among different standings of same country. UET OLYMPIAD was a 6 days

event having 21 technical and non-technical modules including motivational seminars and

fun-socio events. The number of volunteers who joined to learn and grow through this

opportunity was more than 250 including 25 ambassadors of different universities. The

participants who had been attracted by this, were almost 2000. UET OLYMPIAD has served

as a big equalizer which had put a diverse crowd in a nutshell. The overwhelming response

of the associates explains, it is a historic accomplishment.

SKY LANTERNS (Read & Rise)

Sky Lanterns-Read & Rise, was a remarkable success of ASME UET. As it was an

unparalleled initiative taken by team ASME UET in the history of UET Lahore. It had made

the audience to enjoy to their hearts out for the love of reading. First ever Book Fair was

organized by ASME UET to enhance the importance of books not only among the engineers;

but towards the general public too, and this was clear from our press statement. ASME UET

provided volunteering opportunity to more than 100 students in making this impactful eve

for 2000 participants a memorable one. The purpose of this vibrant evening is to gather the

multitude of UET on a same ground under the banner of ASME to witness the impact of

learning through beauty and delights of colors.

U-WEEK

The orientation week was organized for the new session of UET of the year of 2014,

to get them familiarize with the technical world in which they stepped into, with multiple

hand on activities. The activities were all socio-techno kind of that had embossed a sharp

image of ASME UET onto the minds of fresh man, from familiarizing with the SDC statement,

to doing something challenging in our own home brewed “Minute to Win it”. The worthy

participants in this noon were 4000 and they were seeing volunteering and participating for

4

the functioning and promotion of ASME UET throughout the year.

ASME UET always strive for the betterment of the future of the world and it aims to

explore and excel globally through the enhanced ability of young talents by enlightening

their knowledge, skills and attitude for the benefits of society and the nation.

Achievements:

Apart from the participation of our members in national and international

competitions, we focus on victory and maintain the repute and trend of excellence. The

team from UET Lahore was declared victorious in SDC as part of SPDC 2014. For the third

time we have won OLD GUARD ORAL PRESENTATION COMPETITION, and second time we

have stood first in district G. ASME UET Delegate represented UET Lahore in IMECE 2013-14

in USA and 2014-15 in Canada. The victors of SDOB have also been nominated from the very

same platform of ASME UET Lahore.

Recently this, the grant we achieved from ASME UET as Diversity Action Grant (DAG)

has proved a boon for us as it was the reason of our biggest success of this year. More than

1200 students of 4 schools were benefited. It was to bridge the gap between theoretical and

practical knowledge of Upcoming students to undertake engineering as profession.

5

5 Final report DAG 2015

Essence of DAG

Every virtuous initiation needs planning and the proceedings. We are very glad to

have such an admired support from ASME International and we all would like to thank

ASME with whole-heartedly for its help. Truly speaking, without their contribution Diversity

Action Grant Activity 2015 would not have been possible. In Pakistan people are busy in

acquiring the basic necessities neglecting everything else, and the most ironic part is that we

have talents, but we haven’t utilized it properly. The reason behind this is the lack of

technology, resources and the system of education that are prevailed in our society.

As a responsible youth of nation, it is we who have to change and change is

inevitable. We have been plagued by several dilemmas and benign social, economic and

security problems. Consequently, all that we need to bring change is to uplift or upgrade the

methodology; more specifically it is the methodology of education. And unless we start it as

an individual, it’s not going to the part of our trend. In a nutshell due the commitment of

serving the nation and its youths who are the future of Pakistan, we felt the necessity of

Diversity Action Grant. The main goal of this grant was to motivate, inspire and explore the

hidden talents of our school children, girls and minorities of age group 10-16 years.

The activity aims at 3 main essential factors:

1) Application of basic science concepts through different projects/competitions

2) Introductory counselling on engineering education and engineers

6

6 Final report DAG 2015

3) Motivation speech.

The team of 20+ executive body members of ASME UET with their remarkable efforts and

enthralling commitment contribute to make this event a ground-breaking achievement for

the entire society. It was only possible due to our team work and commitment for change.

Phases of DAG Activity:

about engineering to quench their thirst of getting ideas of what, how and why about

engineering. The presentation compromised of briefing on DAG, ASME International, ASME

UET, engineering education, engineers, description of competitions and question answering

of queries of students QA session. We organized three basic competitions for grade 8, 9 &

10 students of some public and private schools in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. These

competitions were Egg Drop Activity, Scaled Bridge Competition and Water Rocket. The

students were provided with the limited materials to be used and design or fabricate the

project within the prescribed or allocated time of 60 minutes.

The brief objective and overview of the activities were as listed below:

Events and Competitions:

Egg Drop Activity

Participants were asked to prepare a device to protect an egg from a second story

drop to keep it from SMASHING when it hits the ground. Accuracy of the drop, minimizing

the weight of the protective device, and minimizing the number of components in the

protective device are all factors in determining who wins.

8

8 Final report DAG 2015

Scaled Bridge Competition

For this activity, the students were given some junk material and were asked to

make the best possible design of a bridge. This activity uses some basic knowledge of statics.

The stability of bridge and maximum weight it can bear will be judged by the judges.

9

9 Final report DAG 2015

Water Rocket

The objective was to design a prototype/model of a Water Bottle Rocket out of PET

bottle. This activity applied Newton’s 3 laws of motion and helped the kids to apply these

laws practically and learn them by heart. The total time for the construction of model was

60 minutes. The winning teams were the one having maximum points according to the

formula.

After the allocated time, students were commanded to submit their tasks with their

team name mentioned on it and the judging panel were engaged to select the winners after

each and every activity. The judgment criteria of different event was set by respective event

managers of the DAG activity.

10

10 Final report DAG 2015

Program’s Successes and Outcomes:

More than 800 students from 4 schools participated in this event and each school

was visited for 4 consecutive days.

The main purpose of each activity was to enlighten the students with practical

examples of what they have been learning in their curriculum. They showed an

immense interest and participated actively throughout.

The teachers and instructors in those schools were astonished by the activity and

ensured that they would be having similar types of events in nearer future as a part

of their regular academic calendar. Positive response from everybody was achieved.

Goals:

Shaping the minds of school children and make their cognizance aware of the

scientific advancement that has transformed the life style of human beings and bring

women and minorities in Pakistan in the same stream as man is the primary goal of DAG.

This aims at bridging the gap between minorities and majorities within Pakistan and making

all know about ASME, its objectives and its image with the modern industry and businesses.

The central goal is to entrust them that ‘The Child is the father of the man’. They are

the real assets of nation. However, the goal of all what we do is to help the kids know their

potential and hidden talents and excel for the entire benefit of our country. Nevertheless,

we focus on career, engineering sciences, technologies and changes happening around us.

Collaboration with the STEM-5 to boost the level of 4th and 5th grade students of

government schools who are deprived of the realization of science and mathematics in the

practical life.

How Achieved:

This accomplishment is achieved only due to the grueling efforts of our doyens of

2011 session of mechanical engineering who became the torchbearer on imparting

engineering knowledge among young souls with their diligent leadership and thus, leaving

behind the legacy for us to take charge.

Evaluation of Program’s Success:

Our satisfaction is entirely centred to the success of DAG activity. However the

response that we got from the school children was incredible. We hit the website of schools,

social networks and various webpages. Their great excitement was the cause of our success.

After all, we were also motivated, encouraged and thanked by the school’s administration

especially the principals. Though our ideas for DAG 2015 seemed to be optimistic in the

beginning it turned to be alike what we had thought of it to be. The program enrolled round

about 1200 schoolchildren from 4 schools and the most exciting part is that they all were

made familiar about know-and-how about engineering education and their interest to

science was further enriched by blending their subjective knowledge with the practicality of

the basic science principles relevant to that particular subject. Their questions were

blameless and the expectation was too high. Suddenly it was a real challenge to stand with

their sky touching expectation; however it was also a source inspiration for us. And such

inspiration amalgamated with our common dream to serve the nation is what that led us to

achieve the glorious achievement in DAG activity. Still our learning is being improvising and

polishing day-by-day as the time passes on. We hope to make it more effective and mind

bugling event next year with the kind support of ASME International.

Other Comments/Observations/Pertinent Info:

Our plans for the DAG’15 also included the ‘Visit of School Children to UET Science

Museum and the university as well’ agenda. But due to the security reasons for the time

being, we were unable to churn it out to be realistic. Apart from this, overall program was

noteworthy. But as there is always a room of improvement, we are synchronized together

to put a common accomplishment on the table. We believe in work and for sure we will be

continuing working in your coordination to build the dreams and prepare the youth for

Conclusion and Future Aspects:

ASME UET Lahore is very much thankful to the ASME INTERNATIONAL for choosing it

to be the cause of enhancing social interaction with a novel approach of dragging technical

aptitude along with it. WE, team ASME UET had really worked hard to achieve the goals of

DAG and hope that this association and project will continue and improve year on year as

the awareness increase. We have been approached by various NGOs to collaborate for this

project and we hope to do better next year if given opportunity. We have targeted the

progenies of Lahore, Pakistan to let them peep into the world of innovation and technology.

It’s an overwhelming feeling when you see mere masses moved towards the hikes of

ingenuity by a single but combined step taken by you and by a firm having resources to

support this kind of activities. With all these optimism and enthusiasm we do believe that

together we can be a source of continuous and effective adjustments within the present

society and with its people attitude by showing and providing them a platform from where

they can grow, excel and achieve.

Talking about some future aspects, we ASME UET deals with technical sections with

a technical project associated with it to let the desirous of technology practice well. With

these projects we participates in number of corresponding competitions and represents

ASME. This procedure can be enlarged to the bigger stage and can involve increased

number of aspirants if ASME INTERNATIONAL device ways to support that worthwhile

projects to propagate the technical world.
