Scouting, training, competition and assess-ment are the pillars the philosophy of Aspire Academy’s Football Department and, when the Tri-Series was launched in 2012, it was clear from the very beginning that this tournament would play a major role in the development of our players. An approach to development that is not only focused on winning games and tourna-ments, but also on preparing players mentally for the games that really matter when they put on the maroon shirt and represent Qatar from youth up to the senior level.

Playing is, of course, the most important school for our players and we try to give them as much playing time as possible. Therefore we organi-zed in cooperation with Qatar Foundation (QF) the “Aspire QF Junior League” for school child-ren in Qatar. That gives boys in age groups U-7 to U-11 the chance to regularly compete at the Academy. Also they play with their clubs in local leagues. In order to increase the number of ga-mes for U-10 and U-11 players, we also started the “Aspire Football League” that gives our play-ers and their clubs an extra competition to play

in over the year. And since we organise it, it’s possible for us to adapt the format according to our ideas in terms of age, size of pitch and rules to make sure players get the most out of it.Having joined the Academy, the Tri-Series ex-poses our players on a regular basis to interna-tional opponents, whereby our players have an opportunity to test themselves against different playing styles, philosophies and models of foot-ball from all over the world. This format creates the right atmosphere for them to develop a com-petitive spirit and it prepares them step by step for qualifiers and final tournaments with Qatar, such as the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship that takes place in October in Bahrain. The Tri-Series does not only prepare players for these tournaments, it also gives the coaches of Qatar’s national teams the chance to constantly see players of different age groups competing at a high level, some of whom may be suitable for their team. This again perfectly summarizes the purpose of the above competitions, which is preparing players for official matches. Since Academy teams build the foundation of Qatar’s national youth teams, we sometimes add a bit of patriotic flavor to the Tri-Series by inviting federations from countries like Iran, Denmark, Croatia and Mexico to compete with the Maroon shirts. The concept of the Tri-Series has turned out to be a successful one. It creates the set-up for our players to compete, compare and improve and most importantly, it makes them eager to aim higher. Nevertheless, we never stop innovating and we will keep reflecting on the things we could tweak here or improve there to ensure the Tri-Series remains as effective for the parti-cipants as it has proven to be so far.

QUICK FACTS Since it was launched in 2012, the Tri-Series has played a major role in the development of Aspire Academy’s student-athletes. The tournament se-ries provides an opportunity for teams from the Academy to compare, benchmark and compete against the best youth teams in the world. Below we explain some key features of the Tri-Series.

1. TEAM SELECTION

Each season, the Tri-Series brings club teams, national youth teams and players from aca-demy teams around the world to Doha. These teams are selected to participate in the tourna-ment according to specific criteria including the standard of youth development programmes in their countries as well as the profile and backg-round of the teams themselves. Planning for the forthcoming season has generally already been completed by the end of April. Each tournament schedule has to be coordinated with the inter-national and national playing commitments of the clubs and national teams as well as with the academic year.

2. ORGANISING THE TOURNAMENT

The tournament series presents a mammoth organisational task, involving several depart-ments within Aspire Academy. Every element is meticulous planned – across catering, transport, visas, flights, accommodation, interpretation, hiring referees, provision of medical care, PR and much more besides. The Football Opera-tions team from the Academy plays an import-ant role working with the clubs before their trips to handle visas along with a range of other orga-nisational tasks. 3. ON-SITE SUPPORT

Once the teams arrive, they are welcomed by a team guide who accompanies them during their entire stay in Doha. Accommodation at Aspire Zone, in either the ‘Torch Hotel’ or the ‘Grand Heritage Hotel’, ensures the teams are only a short distance from where the games take pla-ce. Aspire Academy’s pitches are just a five mi-nute-walk away, so is the Academy’s cafeteria, where the visiting teams are served lunch and dinner. Medical assistance is provided by the Academy’s “Medical Centre.” 4. COVERING OFF THE FORMALITIES

Before the first match kicks off on the first day of the tournament, the team coordinators gather in the morning for a technical meeting at Aspire Academy. There the clubs are given an overview of the format of the tournament by Stephan Hildebrandt, Head of Football Operations. The rules are explained to them and they also get to meet the teams of people playing important roles behind the scenes. Before lunch, the teams are officially welcomed to Aspire Academy by Football Director Roberto Olabe.

5. MAINTAINING THE TEMPO OF GAMES

The purpose of the tournament is to provide valuable match experience for players. So whilst teams are able to bring on substitutes during the game, opportunities to do so are limited to just two substitutions during the second half. This is designed to maintain the tempo and ensure that games are fast flowing. After a player is taken off the pitch, it is not possible to bring him back on again. Players sent off in a match are usually suspended for the next game. In the case of an appeal, the tournament committee can review individual cases based on examining video foo-tage.

6. PENALTY SHOOT-OUT

The team with the most points after two games wins the tournament in their respective age group. In the event that two teams have the same number of points, the winner is decided on goal difference or if necessary, the total num-bers of goals scored. Whatever the final score, each game ends with a penalty shoot-out. In the event of a draw, the penalty shoot result deter-mines the winner and the teams’ ranking. 7. ACCURATE ANALYSIS

All games are taped by Aspire Academy’s scou-ting department, and each team receives DVDs

of their matches after the tournament. In additi-on, visiting teams receive a match report, which features analysis of their games against Aspire Academy. To ensure they receive an accurate re-port, teams must submit details of line-ups and tactical formation to the scouting department before 12:30pm on match day. 8. RECOGNITION

Each tournament concludes with an offici-al awarding ceremony. This takes place after the last match on the third and final day of the tournament, and every team receives a trophy in recognition of their efforts. The tournaments are covered by local media, as well as by Aspi-re Academy’s own publications and channels including a TV-magazine on the Al-Kass Sports Channel, social media, information screens around the Academy and the Academy magazi-ne “CHAMP”.

One of the clubs the Tri-Series featured in the 2015-16 season was “the Legend” Olympiacos FC. The 43 times Greek champion travelled to Doha in April 2016 and participated with three age groups. Let’s take a look back to a unique experience and find out what to expect from participating in the Tri-Series.

Approximately 2,5 million people live in Qatar on 11,586 km2 - only 300.000 of them are Qatari citizens. From these 300.000 people, a national football team capable of competing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup QatarTM with the best teams in the world will be developed. Identifying the ta-lent that has the potential to represent Qatar in 2022 at an early stage and supporting them along the way is the job of Aspire Academy’s Scouting Unit.Aspire Academy’s scouting unit is part of the Football Department and works closely with individual teams at the Academy. A match ana-lyst is integrated into teams’ coaching staff, ga-thering information about opponents through videos, scouting reports or by watching their upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Academy scouts are also analyzing games and creating scouting player maps. In finding the potential players for the Academy and Qatar national youth teams, the scouts attend QFA matches, government and school football competitions and the Olympic School Program. What is the best age to start scouting a player? “The sooner we spot a talent that has the poten-tial to join the Academy the better, because play-

EVERY PLAYER IS A PROJECT

er development is key for us to become compe-titive at an international level” is the response of Juan Luis Delgado Bordonau, a Spaniard, who is coordinating the Academy’s Scouting Unit alongside his Dutch colleague Jan Jap Schmaal. Each year, more than 4,000 players aged 8 to 18 appear on the radar of Aspire’s scouts and coa-ches. “Our goal is not to miss any talent. And you have to take into account the fact that some kids develop later than others while others might fall out of the system at one point, but work their way back in.” Thanks to the six football talent centers run by Aspire Academy in Qatar, talented boys can be spotted when they have reached just five years

of age. “The level between these competitions varies, but it’s important to be present and to make sure you get the most of the talent pool available”, says Schmaal.

SCOUTING, MONITORING, BENCHMARKINGSpotting Qatari talent, however, is just one of the scouting team’s responsibilities. The team – consisting of eight scouts, four analysts and five administrators – is also responsible for monito-ring and benchmarking players already at the Academy, those within Qatar’s national teams playing up to U23 level and players from leagues and competitions of interest such as QSL and AFC Championships. With all this information, which is collected through a combination of live observation and video footage as well as tools like Prozone, GolStats, SoccerLab or Wyscout, the scouting department supports the develop-ment of prospective Qatari players.

Their work helps team coaches prepare teams for important tournaments, such as AFC youth championships. “If necessary, scouts or analysts record and analyse the games of future oppo-nents and provide coaches with a customized report. Our job is to support them to be competi-tive and time plays a major factor here, because teams and players develop rapidly. You cannot rely on information you gathered about an op-ponent five months ago,” Bordonau explains.

TRI-SERIES AS BENCHMARKING TOOLWhile the Academy players are monitored du-ring both training and their weekend club ga-mes, the Tri-Series tournament provides the scouting department with its best opportunity to benchmark players against international competition. In this tournament, the players face top opponents from all over the world, providing a great chance to see how players deal with competition at this level. Schmaal points out that every player’s performance in a Tri-Series game is evaluated, including that of the Academy’s opponents, and afterwards the scouts select the players that stood out, giving coaches an idea of which positions Aspire Aca-demy needs to strengthen and where they al-ready have players capable of performing on the international stage.“Team work is very important in our job,” Bordo-nau adds. “Without it, we would not be able to support teams and players as effectively as we do. Football is constantly changing and being up to date is crucial. That’s why you have to be careful which data you compare and share. Our monitoring also supports coaches to see if their players are able to transfer what they demons-trate in training onto the pitch when it really matters.”Demonstrating the passion and attention to detail required to become a part of the team giving Qatar an edge over its international com-petitors, Schmaal concludes by saying: “Every player is a project. No two players in the world are exactly the same. Each player has his own style and his own unique physique. We have to be realistic that a small country like Qatar is not going to win the AFC Championship every time, but we’re working hard to make sure Qatar’s na-tional team makes its country proud in 2022.”

DR. CRISTINA FINK, Director Sport Psy-chology at Philadelphia Union, is a highly expe-rienced sports psychologist with a professional background in athletics, who has worked with Olympic medalists, World Champions as well as professional and national football teams. When her club participated in the Tri-Series in October 2015, she gave a presentation on ‘Creating the environment for excellence’. We picked 6 of her crucial top tips for coaches working in youth football:

TRAIN MENTAL SKILLS“As a coach, you want players to be confident, motivated, consistent, focused and good team-mates. These skills are trainable and you need to think about the best way to do that. Be awa-re that you cannot separate the mental aspect from other aspects of the game or training because you want the players to link the psycho-logical, tactical and technical skills. If you don’t train them to link these together, you could do more harm than good.”

CREATING THE ENVIRONMENT OF EXCELLENCE

BE A MOTIVATOR“Autonomy plays a big role when it comes to motivation. In order to keep players motivated, you need to follow three important rules: Any attempt of external control will reduce inter-nal motivation. Any feedback that undermines perceptions of competence will reduce internal motivation. People have to want to have an im-pact. Also, make sure that your players set goals for themselves, including ‘stretch goals’, which are goals that have an equal chance of being achieved or not.”

MANAGE YOUR ENERGY“About 80 percent of coaches say they don’t sleep well so, in order to be effective, make sure you think about yourself as well. Are you over-stressed or under-recovered? Where is your tolerance level? What is your main source of phy-sical, emotional and spiritual energy? How and when do you recharge? Who are the vampires around you that suck out your energy? And most importantly, what can you do about it?”

ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE THINKING“Teach your players to think in a productive way and make it part of the training language. If a coach tells a player “You are not good enough”, it does not tell the player what the coach really means in that specific moment. That does not help, so make sure to watch what you say. Th-erefore, remember that productive thinking is focused on the present, it’s personally controlla-ble, task-related and specific.”

KNOW HOW TO LET GO“As a coach, you do many things for your ath-letes. You believe in their potential, work with them on their self-belief, help them setting go-als, encourage and support them, review their

CREATE A HIGH PERFORMANCE EN-VIRONMENT“Establish a clear vision of where you want to go with the players then formulate a strategy that you communicate as clearly as possible to them, so each player knows what you expect. Challenge the players but make sure they have the chance to succeed because, if the challenge is too high, they will burn out but if it’s too low, they will get bored. Give them individual support and feedback and make sure to be as specific as possible. Remember that feeding back is a po-sitive process because it helps people to grow.”

performance, create the best possible environ-ment or help them to take responsibility. But in the end, and this is probably the hardest part, you have to put them out there and let go. As much as you want to support them, they have to play, not you.” (info box)

SHARING EXPERTISEClubs that come to Aspire Academy to partici-pate in the Tri-Series are invited to present their work, philosophies and various topics related to working with youth players. This huge wealth of experience and international knowhow be-nefits both coaches of the Academy and invited coaches of Qatari clubs. In the 2015-16 season, the following clubs took the opportunity to con-tribute to this lecture format: Estudiantes de La Plata (Leandro De Rose), Philadelphia Union (Cristina Fink), VfB Stuttgart (Markus Fiedler, Onur Bodur), Vissel Kobe (Kenichi Mikitani), Me-xico FA (Mario Alberto Artaga, Juan Carlos Or-tega), FC Red Bull Salzburg (Ernst Tanner) and Universidad De Chile (Edorta Murua).

Mario Götze‘s winning goal in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™Final was credited in part to his years of practice with Borussia Dortmund using the Footbonaut – the unique football training machine designed to improve passing, spatial awareness and control. Since 2014, the cutting-edge training device from Germany has been an important part of Aspire Academy’s training approach and methodology, valued by coaches for the way it allows them to work specifically on improving players’ individual skills.

So how does the Footbonaut work? It’s a robotic cage and four-sided ball-feeding machine which

of Aspire Academy’s student-athletes. Following their regular three-month assessment, the most promising 54 players at the Academy are selected to train with the Footbonaut until the date of their next assessment. “We work with them individually or in small groups, selected according to age or the position they play in. Each player has a customized programme with exercises tailored to the skills we want to help them improve. In this way, every player is himself a project.”

Speed, precision, consistency of performance and adaptability are some of the skills that training with the Footbonaut helps players to focus on. To support players with their training and development programmes, videos of their sessions with the Footbonaut are analysed along with their performances in training and competitions. Based on their progress, exercises with the Footbonaut can be adapted. “Players need to be aware of their individual strengths and weaknesses. It’s vitally important that we work with them individually because every player is different. You can have a group of five center-backs and every one of them will be different in terms of his skill set”, explains Perreira.

EFFECITIVE MONITORINGThe Footbonaut is used by those player from the Academy selected to do so from Sunday to Thursday, before the afternoon training sessions as well as on Sunday mornings. In addition, the QFA sends players from different national teams to work with the high-tech training device. The exercises in the Footbonaut can be programed according to a range of needs – whether for general training, position specific exercises or

in post-match recovery sessions. Of course, it is also used for assessing the evolution of the Academy players. During their time at the Academy, all student athletes that are part of the football programme are tested in terms of their physical, psychological, technical and tactical progress and development.

“The Footbonaut is a very useful tool for continually monitoring the development of our players,” says Perreira. Players are put to the test in intensive sessions lasting between 15 to 30 minutes. The balls are ejected at various heights from a distance of just seven metres and at speeds of up to 120km/h, and the pace of each delivery can be controlled, as well as the amount of spin a ball has spin on it. “The players find the sessions quite demanding. During fifteen minutes in the cage, a player will have received and delivered as many balls as he would during two or three training sessions outside of it.”randomly fires balls at different speeds, heights

and levels of spin at players. The player must control the ball and the deliver it first time into one of 72 squares, 1.4 x 1.4m, and which are lit up as targets. After hitting the target, a ‘beep’ then alerts the player as to where the next ball is coming from.

COSTUMISED PROGRAMMES“It’s a great tool to help players target specific areas of weakness,” explains Joao Perreira, co-ordinator of individual training at the Academy, who describes sessions in the Footbonaut as an important piece of the puzzle in the development
