Executive Summary

Introduction:

The goal of the Training of Trainers (ToT) process is to give new trainers the background

knowledge, skills and practical experience. The Training of Trainers (ToT) model is intended to

engage master trainers in coaching new trainers that are less experienced with a particular topic

or skill, or with training overall. A ToT workshop can build a pool of competent instructors who

can then teach the material to other people.

Training design and content:

The training was designed based on the principles of andragogy and originally derived from

the principles of Systematic Approach to Training (SAT). The training methodology included

an ideal mixture of classroom lectures, field visit, case studies and peer learning. The learning

atmosphere encouraged the participants to discuss and share knowledge and issues thus

paving way for participatory learning. Broad topics covered were:

• Systematic approach to Training.

• Basics of Training:

1. Behaviour, What, Why, When.

2. Performance Problem and its Dimensions.

3. Systematic approach to Training.

4. Four ways of learning.

• Learning and Training:

1. Adult Learning Principles.

2. Writing Training Objectives

3. Feedback as a development tool.

4. Education Learning and Training.

• Introduction to Training need analysis.

• Introduction to Design of Training and Design Brief.

• Design of Training: Key Components.

• Evaluation of Training:Basics.

• Easterby-Smith, Hamblin and Kirkpatrick Model of evaluation of Training.

• Direct Trainer Skills: Concept, terminology and Lecture as a training method.

• Field visit as training method.

• Review of field visit as a training method.

• Practice based Micro sessions on Lecture Method.

• Review of Lecture as a Training method and More Training methods suitable for ToT

in Forestry.

The inaugural session was chaired by Shri R.P. Singh, IFS, Director, Directorate of Forest

Education, Dehradun and the valedictory session was chaired by Shri Rakesh Kumar, Former

IFS, Vice Chancellor Graphic Era (Deemed to be University), Dehradun. The detailed time

table showing session-wise topics and resource persons is enclosed in the present Course

Report.

Field visits:

The participants were given outdoor exposure by way of a one-day field visit to Mussoorie

Wildlife Sanctuary to study incorporation of experiential learning and management games in

Training of Trainers.

Training materials:

A compendium of articles related to the relevant topics in soft copy covered during the

course, apart from the copies of the presentations made by the experts in each session were

also provided to each trainee as part of the training kit.

Participant profile:

A total of 33 participants attended the training module coming from of 15 States in which 29

participants were gentlemen and 4 of them were ladies. Maximum participation was from

Maharashtra,Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh each having 4 participants.

Details of the participants are enclosed at Appendix IV. The field experience of participants

varied from as low as 2 years to 20 years approximately.

Resource persons:

from the trainings conducted in the past. A total of 2 resource persons conducted training

sessions spread over 14 classroom sessions and three sessions of field visit. Details of topics

covered and the concerned resource persons are enclosed as Appendix III. Feedback of the
