EASYTRIP LEADER WINTER ACTIVITY TRAININGWinter is one of the most exciting times to be outdoors. Traces of wildlife are more obvious, snow turns any landscape into a winter wonderland, and snowshoes and cross country skis make any snow-filled journey less arduous. With the colder temperatures comes more responsibility for trip leaders to care for themselves and their participants. We’ll start with a discussion on how to prepare yourself to lead any type of outing in the winter. Then we’ll dive into the nuances of cross country skiing and snowshoeing. After a break for lunch, we’ll discuss winter camping. This training will give each participant a good basis of knowledge to care for groups and plan outings in the wintertime no matter your skill level.

Date: Sunday, January 24Time: 9 AM - 1 PMLocation: Hidden ValleyCost: Member $35, Non-Member $49

SNOWSHOEINGNOTE: Snowshoeing is dependent on proper snow conditions. It will be determined by office staff if conditions are favorable. If conditions are not favorable, a hike may be offered instead. Fee includes snowshoe rental. Participants with their own snowshoes may register for any snowshoe outing and will receive $10 off the outing cost. Please call the office to register.

The Rachel Carson Trail snakes for 34 miles across northern Allegheny County. It is the most rugged trail in Western Pennsylvania as it follows power and gas lines, skirts residential areas, challenges your arches on paved roads, crosses creeks without bridges, meanders through woods and fields and passes along the edge of steep bluffs. Parts of this trail are pretty; parts are wretched; all of it is surprising. Every year some 600 people take the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge and complete the full distance in one exhausting day…with appropriate bragging rights. This Quest series lets you hike the trail in four sections in the direction of this year’s Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. On each hike, we will meet at the hike end point and carpool to the start.

BE AWARE: This is a very strenuous hike and you need to be in shape to attempt it. The saying is: “If there’s a possible worst way for a trail to go, that’s where The Rachel goes.” This trail includes sections that are very steep with no switchbacks or alternatives.

Hike #1 - This first hike will start in Harrison Hills Park and cover 9.8 miles to Tarentum.

Hike #2 - This second hike will start in Tarentum and cover 8.9 miles to Springdale.

Hike #3 - This third hike will start in Springdale and cover 9.8 miles to Dorseyville.

Hike #4 - This fourth hike will start in Dorseyville and cover 9.3 miles to North Park.
