Gippsland Storm Tryouts
Sunday 19th October & Sunday 26th October 2014
For the better part of the last 20 years we have developed players that have gone on to represent Victoria and Australia both in junior and senior ranks, the likes of Jess Thomas, Briony Cargill and Renae Hallinan just to name a few. Renae, was part of Australia’s gold medal winning team at the recent Commonwealth Games. Our record speaks for its self, but it takes eff ort and dedication. We are here to help you along the way.
Last year we merged with Monash University Storm. This direct association off ers developing netballers a potentially seamless pathway into the Victorian Netball League.

On behalf of PCNSA Chairman Stuart Gilchrist and the Board of Directors congratulations to all football and netball clubs that participated
so passionately and proudly in 2014.This season seems to have gone fast and, thankfully, has been relatively free of major concern and contro-versy. Again, this is largely due to the many dedicated and hard-working committee members and supporters of our 32 clubs, all of who are winners in the eyes of all of us at the office.Gratitude goes to our media partners who again, have provided the eyes and ears to many. Our long asso-ciation with radio RPP continues to flourish, while we welcomed broadcast of finals matches from Radio Ca-sey 3SER. Combined with the outstanding press cov-erage from the Frankston Times/Western Port News, Pakenham Gazette and Leader publications, together with Facebook, Twitter and other various electronic communication channels, the promotion of our com-petitions is among the best in country and regional ar-eas of Victoria. We also wish to acknowledge the continuation of the partnership with the local police in the Spirit of Foot-ball Awards this season. This weekend will see the culmination of competition with huge grand final clashes on Saturday and Sunday. Beaconsfield and Cranbourne will shoot it out in the Casey Cardinia League Grand Final at the Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday while at Hastings, Sorrento will play Nepean League success story Crib Point for the 2014 premiership. This Super-Saturday will be fol-lowed by the Peninsula League Grand final between long-standing foes Frankston YCW and Mornington at Frankston Park on Sunday, rounding out another won-derful season.Good luck to all who compete for the ultimate prizes in both leagues and may the best sides triumph.
The league and all members and supporters wish to congratulate the winners announced at the an-nual vote count in the Peninsula and Nepean Leagues last Mon-day night. Congratulations to all winners, in particular senior Pen-insula League EV Shade medal winner Michael Gay from Morn-ington and Nepean League George Osborne medalist Jay Bruno from Rye. MVP awards went to Frankston YCW champion Anthony Barry and Sorrento inter-league full forward Leigh Poholke. It was terrific to see the excellent turn out of players and officials from all clubs and credit to most that they showed respect to their club and the league by attending in club colours and behaving in a manner appropriate to the event. The PCNSA is proud of the people who have put so much time and effort in to running our clubs and the integrity with which they have conducted themselves throughout the year. All at the office appreciate the work and commitment of those involved at club level. For the final time we remind patrons to be mindful of enjoying the finals series with respect for all others who are attending. After a long association with the Casey Cardinia Foot-ball Netball League the Keysborough Football Netball club has been accepted into division 2 of the Southern Football League in 2015. On behalf of all the clubs, players and supporters we would like to wish the Keys-borough FNC all the best as the club heads down a new chapter. All PCNSA Grand Final venues will be strictly moni-tored by police and security staff to ensure no alcohol is brought into any venue and that any alcohol pur-chased is consumed responsibly in the appropriate ‘wet’ areas at grounds by persons over the age of 18.Good luck to all Grand Finalists this weekend.

Grand Final Day is a momentto savour. For those who have earned the right to compete for the premiership trophy it’s a day they will remember for the rest of their lives. For others who gather to watch a champion of their re-spective league crowned, it’s an occasion to reflect on the year that was and to plot another campaign in 2015. It’s amazing to think we have already reached the end of the season this year and how quickly the weeks and months have passed. In 2014 we have taken enormous strides in our goal of giving local people a greater say in their direction and development of football in their region. All 13 region commissions, which were established fol-lowing the recommendations outlined in the 2011 Re-view in to Country Football, are now in place.I would like to congratulate the Region General Manag-ers (10), Football Development Managers (26) and Com-mission Members (70+) appointed and wish them well in shaping the future of football in their regions in col-laboration with VWA AFL Victoria Country. The VWA Country Championships again proved a high-light in 2014 with the Geelong FL retaining the title of the best in country Victoria.Thirty six leagues participated in representative matches over the May 24-25 weekend, giving the best players throughout the state a chance to test themselves at a higher level and showcase the level of skill that exists at local level.Following the championships, attention turned to the AFL Victoria Community Cup which saw a team rep-resenting country Victoria take on the combined might of Melbourne’s premier community leagues for just the second time in history.Peter Knights and his fellow selectors eventually settled on a high calibre line-up to take on Metro’s finest at Wer-ribee’s Avalon Airport Oval but ultimately the boys from the bush fell short.Despite the loss, the match was hailed a huge success by those involved and plans are place to make it a regular/semi-regular event on the football calendar. A second Victoria Country representative side, along with an U19s squad, also participated in matches against the Victorian Amateur Football Association on the same day, with the country boys winning both games at Gee-long’s St Albans Reserve in convincing fashion.
As you may be aware, AFL Victoria during the past 12 months has established a working party to assess pos-sible solutions/systems that may reduce the burden of rising player payments and ensure clubs become sustain-able for the future. While it is the responsibility of clubs to manage their own financial situation and ensure their financial posi-tion is sustainable, a safe guard that encourages greater financial responsibility and encourages the investment of both time and funds in game development opportuni-ties, in particular junior development programs, is the ultimate goal of the Working Party.More than 430 clubs across Victoria responded to a sur-vey on the issue and the Working Party is now working hard to produce a set of guidelines, regulations or sys-tems that will hopefully be trialled in 2015.Finally, a big thank you to the coaches, supporters, ad-ministrators, volunteers, umpires and players for your contribution to country football this year.We hope you enjoy a safe off-season and return ready for another campaign in 2015.

New king to be crowned?
Reigning premiers and rampant flag favourites Narre Warren exited out of the flag race in straight sets last week in a scenario that nobody saw coming.First it was Beaconsfield that exposed the Magpies youngsters through sustained pressure a fortnight ago, and then Cranbourne stormed over the top of a seeming-ly tired bunch of players in black and white, consigning Fox Road to an early wake and setting up a grand final showdown that looks nigh impossible to pick. Magpies coach Chris Toner was, for the first time in many years, at a loss to stop the Cranny express last week and Beaconsfield coach Clint Evans would have noted the never-say-die attitude of their opposition this weekend. Of course Toner has seen that trait more than once in the last 12 months and he, along with all Casey Cardinia League followers, witnessed it first hand as Cranbourne went within one point of pulling off the upset of the cen-tury against his undefeated side in last year’s grand final. The question is whether the lads from Casey Fields have another big effort left armoury on the day – the only day – that matters?
HISTORYThe head-to-head record between Beaconsfield and Cranbourne for the year stands at two-one in Beacons-field’s favour. Cranbourne won their round six clash at Casey Fields by 10 points but Beacy turned the tables in round 15 with what many believe was a season-chang-ing 54-point domination at home. Beacy underlined that edge in the second semi-final with a comprehensive 29-point victory. That should be enough to make the lads
from Holm Park Road warm favourites in the Grand Final. The 2014 player statistics for both sides are remarkably similar. Be4aconsfield has used 41 players throughout the season with five playing every game. Cranbourne has used one more player but also has only five on its list that has played every game, so no real pointer to fitness or stability is evident from these numbers.
GAME AND TACTICSBeaconsfield will be at full strength after the week off while Cranbourne coach Scott Sutherland has been around far too long to make the mistake of fielding any players who are less than physically ready to play at their best. The pressure is off Cranbourne star Marc Holt who achieved another milestone in his stellar career by boot-ing his 100th goal for the season last weekend. That means the captain will have only one thing on his mind this week – winning. Cranbourne will likely concen-trate on attack from the start and rely on drive out of its midfield play makers led Curtis Barker, Luke Bee-Hugo, Leigh Holt and under rated play maker Max Gearon. Marking options include Mat Rus, Stuart Morrish and Troy Tharle with Brandon Osborne and Nick Barker lead-ing their defence.Beaconsfield’s list is laden with class but it is Evans’ con-centration on team-ethic that has resulted in this week-end’s chance at the ultimate glory. The first job will be to apply physical pressure through Damien Szwaja, Cley Bertoncello, Troy McDermott and Brent Heus. Once that is taken care of it the task of winning the game will fall to Shaun Pollard, Jesse Linkins, Damien Johnston Tyson Mitchem and Ben Kerrigan who have the talent-factor covered.

pieces, so the result might come down to which one pulls the most creative move and forces a mismatch that re-sults in an advantage. On paper Cranbourne has more match winners than Beaconsfield but Clint Evans knows that Grand Finals are won by teams that take risks. His first agenda item will be to send Daniel Battaglin to Marc Holt and hope that the ball supply is limited. However Evans has at his disposal the best, most focussed stopper in the league in Damien ‘Crowley’ Szwaja and who he goes to will be the key. Curtis Barker is a target but realistically Barker is going to get his share of the ball anyway, so maybe star play-making recruit Luke Bee-Hugo might be in for the Szwaja treatment this week.Scott Sutherland will, first and foremost, be interested in curtailing the influence of league medallist Scott Meyer. Michael Boland and Mitch Lindsay will tag-team in that department with the aim of at least nullifying Meyer’s dominance. Another challenge will be to blanket the drive of Beaconsfield captain Daniel Mislicki. Sutherland has several run-with players at his disposal to do that but it may be worth the risk of pitting his own gun runner in Ryan Jones on to ‘Slicka’ and back his side to win the ball.
X-FACTORBeaconsfield is a side that has developed from a group of talented individuals into a champion team throughout the year. They do not rely on one or two stars to ignite them, but there is one player who inspires all, and has done so for a long time now. If Kris Fletcher has another big one then there is every chance Beaconsfield will car-ry off an amazing premiership victory. There are several players on Cranbourne’s list with the credentials to fill the X-factor bill but there is one that most rate as the barometer. If Michael Theodoridis is standing on opponents’ shoulders and grabbing ‘speckys’, he is also usually adding to the scoreboard and when that oc-curs he is impossible to stop. The big watch is on Theo.
TIPAll the recent form and results suggest that Beaconsfield will win and complete a meteoric rise from a side that was perceived as making up the numbers to premiers, but there are other forces at work in this one. Cranbourne players owe themselves another flag. From day one this group believed that they would be part of an era of suc-cess but did not reckon on the rise and rise of Narre War-ren. Well guess what – the Magpies are not there and the era still beckons.
The tip is for Cranbourne to pull off another upset and score a famous win in a high scoring match.
ReservesNarre Warren reserves will enter this Saturday’s grand fi-nal against surprise preliminary final winners Pakenham as hot favourites and are tipped to win the 2014 premier-ship with something to spare. That gets the selection out of the way nice and early, but there is always more to grand finals than that. This will be a case of Magpies coach Stuart Stephenson being ready for anything that Lions counterpart Darren Sidebottom has in up his sleeve. This game will be on for young and old from the first bounce with Pakenham play-ers knowing full well that they are not expected to win and attacking the contest with nothing to lose. Lions like veteran Chad Shooter, Nathan Fry, Chris Car-dona and Adam Alberni will believe that they can upset the premiership fancies but how they will do it is the question. Solid Magpie performers led by Dean Scanlon, goal-kicker Mitch Cowan, Dylan Piening and Daniel Jackson should have the answers for anything that the Lions can muster and march their team mates to glory.
Under 17s and Under 19sBerwick always looked likely to be the Under 19s chal-lengers and coach Scott McGeagh found a way to steel his young charges to the task last weekend. This provides the Wickers with a chance to hold up the inaugural pre-miership cup but the stumbling block – and it is a big one – is hot flag favourites Narre Warren under super experienced mentor Matt Shinners. The Magpies have done everything right this season and should underline that with triumph in the big dance. The Under 17s Grand Final will feature the two best sides all season in another game that will be worth eating breakfast at the ground to see. Narre Warren under astute coach Peter Hoffman last week made amends for their second semi-final defeat to this week’s foes Berwick, and will be out for revenge. However Wickers mentor Russell Trait will be ready and waiting and there is no reason that Berwick will not repeat the dose and raise the first cup of the day.

-DevelsUnder 18 Development Competition
Providing opportunities to young footballers
Like a number of things that have changed in the past weeks and months the colt’s competition as it has be known since its first inception has under gone a name change and from season 2013 will be known as the Under 18’s Development Competition.
The change of name has been positive for the league as Bata Industrials has signed on as our naming rights partner to the competition. Bata’ core businesses and its footwear brands support the development of apprentice trades people across a number of industrials and see’s it involvement in the development competition to support and develop future footballers in our region.
The official start of the Bata Industrials Under 18’s Development Competition or THE DEVELS for short will commence on Saturday 13th April when all 3 leagues are underway. The competition will be made from teams across all 3 leagues, Peninsula – Frankston YCW, Seaford and Mt Eliza in Nepean - Somerville and Casey Cardinia – Berwick, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Narre Warren.
As there are only 8 teams within the competition the official draw will be developed separate to the under18, reserves, seniors and Netball fixtures the up coming games will be published within the football record publications
Spirit of Sport Award
The aim of the program is make a positive contribution to a reduction in youth violence it is important that we convey an accurate and consistent message to all participants including players, clubs, officials, parents and the wider community.
The program has been designed for Under 18 footballers and netballers and targets behavioral standards on the playing arenas by encouraging and rewarding fair play, sportsmanship and mutual respect among teammates and competitors.
The program also aims to encourage similar attitudes towards adolescent violence and anti-social behavior off the field within peer groups, teammates and the community in general. At the same time we are looking to improve the relationship between local youngsters and Victoria Police both corporately and at a local level.
For the purposes of voting the Spirit of Sport Program is judged on 3 main criteria;
• Fairness
• Playing Performance
• General Demeanor (Sportsmanship, Teamwork)
The officiating umpires “judges” will select 3 players from each team and rank them out of 20 points for performance and 20 points for behavior.
This will occur at each game of every round.
The player who scores the most number of points for each round will be recognized as the Spirit of Sport Player of the Week within our Peninsula, Nepean & Casey Cardinia football & Netball Competitions.
The points awarded to each player during the season will accumulate for the benefit of their Club when it comes time to naming of the Spirit of Sport Club of the Year.

Beaconsfield Football ClubThis year has been jam packed with highs and lows but fortunately for us the highs have come through at the right time. All 4 teams can be very proud of their efforts this year and their 2014 finish. We have great talent coming up through the ranks and the future is brighter than ever. Our main focus today is of course the senior Grand Final game between two well deserving teams and we’re sure if the last couple of weeks are anything to go by - it’s going to be a nail biter. Our Netballers have a full day of Grand Final games ahead of them and we con-gratulate them on a great year. To our sponsors, thank you for your generous support of our club as we couldn’t do this without you. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone that has contributed and volunteered their time throughout the season, the club depends on you week in & week out; there are too many names to mention here but I want you to know you’re very much appreciated. Our volunteers together with our players & support-ers are what give our club its heart & soul. Good luck to everyone today and may the best teams win. Gary Valentine - President Beaconsfield Football Club
Cranbourne Football Club2014 has been a wonderful year to be involved at the Cranbourne Football Club. Celebrating our 125th year, our players across the many divisions of football and netball we represent have taken all before them. It is you guys who bring us the joy and satisfaction by your efforts. To the Board members and volunteers who have helped make our club great, a big thank you to all. Without you, the club just cannot function. To our sponsors; each and every one of you who commit and contribute to our club are highly thought of and valued. A huge thank you to you also. And lastly, to the coaches and to our players of our Senior football and D Grade netball sides who will represent us on the field or court today, the club is proud of you all and wishes you the very best. To those that have missed through injury or otherwise, you are as much a part of this as those playing. We know that your unbreakable desire to succeed will get you over the line today.Go Eagles!!Shane Baker - President Cranbourne Football Club

Eagles to swoop on premiership glory....What a surprise to be doing a story on Casey Football Grand Final day without Narre Warren being part of but that is what we find ourselves in. Football can deliver up almost any combination of surprises. Today we have two original South West Gippsland clubs in Cranbourne and Beaconsfield with history back to the beginning of that league in 1954. Surprisingly these sides have only met in finals football on 5 occasions with Cran-bourne leading 3 to 2.1966 1st Semi Final Beaconsfield 12 – 8 to Cranbourne 8 – 251990 Preliminary Final Cranbourne 18 – 11 to Beaconsfield 11 – 132010 2nd Semi Final Beaconsfield 8 – 14 to Cranbourne 6 – 82013 Qualifying Final Cranbourne 15 – 12 to Beaconsfield 13 – 72013 Preliminary Final Cranbourne 15 – 9 to Beaconsfield 9 – 13This will be first ever Grand Final between the teams and one that will see both sides gives their all to get the coveted Casey Premiership.Looking back to the 2010 2nd Semi Final Cranbourne had finished on top and awaited the winner of the Qualifying Final between Beaconsfield and Narre Warren. Beaconsfield duly won their match and met Cranbourne for the right to go straight to the Grand Final.Doug Koop was in charge of Cranbourne and Austin Jones Beaconsfield. This was one of those rare occasions in local football where two former AFL/VFL stars led competing teams. Beaconsfield had control of the first term but kicked poorly with the wind as Cranbourne appeared out of sorts. 1 – 8 to 0 – 0 at the first changeCranbourne with the aid of the wind started to pick up their game and Holt brothers in the air were causing lots of headaches for the Beaconsfield defence. By half time the match had evened up 2 – 9 to 3 – 3 in favour of Beaconsfield. The third quarter was all about the run and carry of Beaconsfield as they got well on top all over the ground they were playing in front and prepared to take the game on with the strong wind. At the last change they led 7 – 14 to 3 – 6 Could Cranbourne who had only dropped two games for the season lift and put pressure on the Beaconsfield midfield that were dominant. But every goal they got was answered in return and gap could not be bridged. Beaconsfield went onto win 8 – 14 to 6 – 8Best for Beaconsfield was A. Gwozdziewski, R. Taylor, K. Aidrie, L. Oakley, M. Stocco and A. Williams; Goals – M. Collins 2 – L. Oakley 2 – M. Stocco 2 – S. Marchetti and C. Setford 1Cranbourne best was L. Holt, R. Harmes, N. Barker, M. Fletcher, B. Osborne and A. Wright; Goals- M. Holt 3 – R. Jones, M. Gearon and N. Barker 1For the record Beaconsfield lost the Grand Final to Narre Warren a fortnight later.Good Luck to both teams today

Beaconsfield Football ClubCongratulations to all teams participating in Grand Finals this week, both footy and netball. I hope all teams do their clubs proud – win, lose or draw.Looking back to the first two games of the season the chances of Beaconsfield play-ing in finals at all, let along the Grand Final, seemed very remote. We continued to struggle for the next few weeks, particularly against other finals contenders, but gradually the players started to believe in themselves and each other. We’ve come a long way since then and the second half of the season has seen us play some of our best footy. Our consistency has improved, and our willingness to put the team first has seen a big improvement in our results. The thing I love about this is that it has been the players who have driven our improvement. We may not have the most skilled side but the players have found a way to put it out there for four quarters. If you can do that you go a long way towards winning games.Today’s game will be the ultimate test for our playing group. I am confident that, regardless of the result, we will leave nothing on the field.Go Beacy!Clint Evans - Coach Beaconsfield FC
Cranbourne Football Club12 months in football is a long time to wait. But the wait is over. The time is here; the time is now. This year the Cranbourne Football Club celebrated its 125th anniversary. The club has had some amazing times in its 125 year history and today, we the members of the football and netball clubs have a chance to add to that. There have been many highs and lows experienced by the club over the years but the thing that hasn’t wavered are its core values; RESPECT, DISCIPLINE and COM-MITMENT. These values have been embraced by the playing groups on the track when training, working together, supporting and celebrating. Off the track these values have been upheld by the sensational efforts from the committee, support staff, sponsors and supporters. The playing group recognises the love and support they receive from their families and loved ones, and they see this as the opportunity to PAY BACK all who has been there throughout the journey. To make the grand final is only one step; to win a grand final is another. They say to really know what it takes to win one you must lose one. May the hurt from last year be the fuel needed to take the next step.Be the best you can; WANT it, DESIRE it, ACHIEVE it.Scott Sutherland - Coach Cranbourne FC

Narre Warren Magpies Today sees three Narre footy sides on the Grand Final card in Reserves, Under 19s and Under 17s. Together with several junior Narre netball teams in grand finals as well, 2014 has been another successful season for our club by any measure. In an epic battle last weekend, our Ones lost by a kick to our great rival Cranbourne. There was disappointment but no shame in the result and we’ll never question the effort and commitment of our players and coaching staff. You gave your best, and you always give it to us. We’ll re-load for 2015.Best of luck to Cranbourne and Beaconsfield in the sen-ior game today.Last Saturday’s Under 17s footy prelim was a classic nail-biter. A four-bounce run by young Brenton Wells and a pressure mark and kick by Jordan Creely got Narre up over Doveton inside the last minute and kept a dream alive. Matt Cronjaeger and skipper Nathan Dawson were our standouts.Win or lose for our teams today, the social rooms at Fox Road will be open this afternoon from about 3.00 pm til late. We invite all Narre supporters, parents and families of our young grand finalists and all our senior netballers and footballers for an end-of-season party, to hopefully take a sip from some premiership cups. And our traditional NWFNC Family Day is on at Fox Road this Sunday with a barbecue lunch kicking off at around midday. All members and supporters welcome.
Pakenham LionsWhat a massive week at the Football Club this week. Af-ter last weeks win by our Reserve’s Team over Berwick, today we see ourselves playing Narre Warren in the 2014 Reserves Grand Final. Its been a fantastic build up around the Ressies during the year, culminating in them competing in the BIG DANCE today. The boys have been fantastic all year and head into today’s game with loads of confidence. Its been fantastic the amount of support that they have been given, not only by the players and coaches of our under 17s, 19s and Seniors, but by all of our Sponsors, Members and Supporters. Much credit needs to go to everyone associated with the team as they have instilled a winning culture that now has the boys dare to dream. There is no bigger stage than a Grand Fi-nal and we wish the team all the very best in their en-deavours of the Reserves Premiership.GRAND FINAL AFTER PARTY. After the conclusion of todays clash, the club will be open to celebrate or com-miserate the year that the club has had. We welcome all our supporters to come back to the club and reflect on the year that we have had. Presentation Night is next Friday Night at 7pm. Tickets $60 a couple, inlcudes 2 course meal and drinks at mem-bers prices. DJ Scot from Seripham Events will entertain the crowd following the presentations. So grab a ticket and enjoy our last official function for season 2014. Good luck to the Ressies today and GO LIONS.

Common Sports InjuryInformationTitle: Preparing for Next Season starts now.Date: September 2014Author: David Francis, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physi-otherapist, Physioworks Health GroupAt this time of year….Every year in January and February many footballers present to me at a Physioworks clinic with very similar, familiar story…..“Last year I missed 3-4 games with general soreness around the hip/back/ pelvis/ groin/hamstring.There was a gradually on-set of stiffness and pain as the season progressed. It was also taking me longer to ‘warm up’ pre-game and by half time I was generally pretty sore.I really noticed that I had trouble in my ability to change direction. I felt I lacked length in my kicking and my speed was down.Sometimes I could not train, I was too sore. And when I did train I compromised. I didn’t go as hard, I learnt not to run at 100%, which I’m sure impacted my fitness. I’d wake up sore after training and especially after a game – I never used to be that sore.Common sense and the general view of a few people I spoke to about my ‘persistent niggles’ was that ‘rest dur-ing the post season will fix this’. So I rested… then I went for run two months after the last game. I felt pretty good. However…… Once I got back into training with in-creased running, changes in direction and ball work I had a re-occurrence of all those symptoms. It is now February and our first game is fast approaching and I’m in a worse plight then six months ago and we have not even played any games yet….What can you do to help?”My professional experience in football over 20+ years, consulting at both elite and community level, is that if you do not have an effective pre-season your entire footy season will be compromised, with an increased likely-hood of injury and with the athlete unlikely to reach op-timal performance.
The reason I repeatedly see the scenario outlined above is that time may be needed, and must be taken, to get a correct diagnosis; plus or minus investigation; plus or minus referral, with the aim of building a tailored action plan to enable you a full pre-season designed to ensure:1. Your condition is eliminated.2. Physical conditioning is obtained.3. Optimal performance and enjoyment in your chosen sport is achieved. Now, in the immediate post season at the Collingwood Football Club, all the players are going through this pro-cess.I ask if the scenario outlined above fits your criteria, no matter what part of your body is presenting with symp-toms, no matter the sport you are playing or what level of competition you participate in, get it addressed now….not in February. The experienced team of health care professionals at Physioworks Health Group, prides themselves on evalu-ating, developing and monitoring tailored action plans to ensure best treatment and outcomes for athletes of all ages and competition levels. So while the end of the season enables time for reflection and rest …the absolute time for improved health, fitness and performance starts now!About the Author – David Francis:David Francis is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiother-apist, Head Physiotherapist for the Collingwood Football Club and Director at Physioworks Health Group. Stingrays News
Stingrays not good enough....The Dandenong Southern Stingrays year is over after a crushing defeat in the Preliminary Final against the Cal-der Cannons on Saturday in perfect sunny conditions in front a huge crowd at Visy Park, Carlton. Played in perfect conditions signs weren’t looking good early with Calder dominating the scoreboard, kicking away to a four goal led. It would take 18 minutes before the Stingrays first goal came to Daniel Capiron, even though the Stingrays were winning the clearances and matching the 200cm Calder Cannon’s twin towers in the ruck and matching inside 50’s. The Stingrays were denied scoreboard pres-sure with entries inside 50 easily picked off by the Calder backs that continually ran it out of their defence going into the first break with a 19 point led. The second quar-ter saw the Cannons extend their lead to 30 points, taking most of their chances in front of goal whilst the Stingrays continued to press forward with similar numbers inside 50, but entries continued to be shallow and high. Goals only came late after the Cannons seemed to run out of legs, allowing back to back goals through Jack Lonie and Bailey Rice in a matter of minutes before the Cannons locked down. The start of the premiership quarter wasn’t the start Stingrays coach demanded at the long break with a goal onboard to the Cannons’ after the Stingrays forwards wasted the first scoring opportunity. Again, the Stingrays couldn’t hit the scoreboard until the latter half of the quarter which was little too late as the Can-nons through the small and midfield brigade continually added goals with Daylan Kempster, Matt Homfray, Mitch White and Kyle Gray closing down the key tall targets who had minimal scoreboard influence for the day. The differences between the two sides were the foot skills and the hard running with the opposition more measured and methodical when pressing forward to find the spare play-er, whilst the luckless Stingrays wasted many opportuni-ties to claw back the margin. The Cannons extended their led to 38 points by the time the siren sounded, which would have been a lot more if it wasn’t for stand out games to Kyle Gray, Mitch White and Daylan kempster across the half back line. The last quarter was more of the same with the Cannons continuing their quick running and playing on at all cost to eventually winning comfort-able by 53 points and booking themselves into the 2014 Grand Final against the Oakleigh Chargers this weekend at Etihad. After the game Dandenong Stingrays Region
Talent Manager Mark Wheeler said, “It’s hard at this time knowing it was one win away from making into the Grand Final…some boys who were here last year really wanted another chance at the last game in September.”“The Cannons are a very good team, who are well coached and they players are well drilled, with a per-fect mix of tall timber and midfield pace….today they ran harder and for longer periods not allowing us to play our game, proving they are a genuine Grand Final team.”Stingrays coach Craig Black was very positive after the game. He said, “We had a very good year, exposing 54 players into the TAC Cup system, finishing a game out of the top 4, playing 3 finals and having a dozen or so in Vic Country.”“They (Cannon’s) had an easier preparation coming in…but coming from 7th was always going to test our fit-ness…the prior two finals games against Western then followed up the week later with a 20 goal turnaround against the Falcons showed at equally footing we are as good as any other team…something I will remind the players about...we controlled our own destiny but were beaten by a better side today. ”He added, “By playing 3 rounds of finals hopefully helped a few more of the players in their hopes of getting their names read out in the draft… KG (Kyle Gray) and Mitch (White) were super today, with Jaylo (Jack Lonie) continuing to be one of the dangerous small forwards…Dan (Moloney) had great Finals…he might become a smoky…and Daylan (Kempster) to keep the possible number 1 pick in Wright to 1 goal was a mighty effort”He finished by saying, “ We close off this year on the 10th October and start 2015 with induction day on the 19th October…it was a great year for the club very happy and proud of what we achieved, just one win away hope-fully will drive us all for next year.”Scores:Dandenong Stingrays 1.1 3.5 5.6 7.7.49Calder Cannons 4.2 8.5 11.8 15.12.102Stingrays Goal Kickers: Jack Lonie 3, Daniel Capiron, Bailey Rice, Aaron Wilson and Tom LambStingrays Best Players: Mitch White , Kyle Gray , Daylan Kempster , Sam Geurts , Aaron Pawel and Jack Lonie

Everything Umpiring with ‘The Foss’ Pete Marshall! As season 2014 draws to a close, I can reflect on what’s been my 40th year involved in football as an umpire, player, administrator coach and runner. At times been pretty hectic mixing the Dolphins with my real job coaching the VSHL-SUA Field Umpires and overseeing the on field performances across the three leagues. It’s always encouraging to see young people taking up the challenging of umpiring Aussie Rules and enjoying their job, albeit sometimes in a hostile environment. We have been lucky to have a well organised football competi-tion and the clubs, players and public alike are generally pretty respectful of the umpires and the job they do. The football has once again provided a lot of close games, fierce contests and the speed and skill of the game has once again risen. Within our leagues, the senior games (home and away) and all finals (all grades) having 3 umpires in the Field and Boundary has assisted in improving the standard of play and a safe place for players and umpires alike. We have had over 360 umpires sign on at the VSHL-SUA this season and our Green Shirt mentor program for first year umpires has been at an all-time high. Over 75 umpires have officiated in the field in the Seniors and 13 for the first time throughout the season. 71 field umpires have tasted finals football and out of the 30 grand final ap-pointments 5 will do their first senior grand final and 11 Field umpires for the first time will be appointed to a grand final with Southern Umpires Association. However it’s not all about finals. We have had record numbers of participation in the V-Line Academy, had umpires do the AFL VIC Country Championships and Finals, International Cup games, TAC Cup games and Lit-tle League games. Our Junior program has been rejigged under Brad and Matt and with assistance from others have had a bumper year. Accreditation was brought up to speed by Mark Mounsey and Neil McKinnon - well done guys. Matt Pongracic and Leighton Rowe partici-pated in the VFL Rookie squad and benefitted greatly as did the Boundary and Goal Umpires who went to VFL training for an orientation night. Hopefully our ranks at the VFL will grow as a handful go to trial. Our general feel for the game, commitment to training and learning from the coaches has been excellent and I feel we have provided an excellent group to our football body the PC-
NSA. Interesting to note in the finals in the seniors the free kick count is 28 paid, 3 missed, 1 unwarranted, with 2 50m penalties on average across all leagues. This might surprise the football public how little we are influenc-ing the game and the general high standard of football played. With the work of the coaching group and support staff along with the board I know we have delivered on our values and mission statement for 2014. Many thanks must go to all of you people for assisting and overall well done to all the boys, girls, men and women who umpired in season 2014. A special mention must go to Mario Ring (Chairman) and his board for their support, Neil McKin-non who has been terrific in the office, my fellow Coach-es and Observers, and our video girl Mel. As we take a break, I won’t miss all the phone calls, texts, emails and meetings which make up the season while working with the group and clubs and coaches alike. In closing I wish all the players and coaches the best of luck in their grand finals. Play the game in the right spirit, play hard but fair, be humble in victory – gracious in defeat and celebrate safely!Upcoming EventsVSHL-SUA Presentation Night: Sat, 18th October 2014 @ 7pm @ Cranbourne Turf Club. After an exciting vote count at the Sandhurst Club on the eve of the Preliminary Finals, the
last chance at making the Grand Final brought out a large crowd and some very close results at Holm Park.
Doveton begun the day well, with both of their 13 and Under sides recording victories. In the 13 White section Doveton 23 defeated Pakenham 20 in a tight contest. Doveton defeated Beaconsfield by a steady six goals to earn their place in 13 Red Grand Final.Pakenham were too strong for ROC in the 15 White sec-tion winning by eight goals. They now take on the unde-feated Narre Warren in the Grand Final. In the 15 Red section Pakenham were rewarded with a Grand Final birth after a 26 – 20 win over Beaconsfield. Their victory sets up a second 15 and Under Grand Final between Narre Warren and Pakenham. Beaconsfield 28 defeated Pakenham 22 in the 17 White preliminary final to progress to the Grand Final. After a surprise loss in the Qualifying Final, ROC begun strong-ly in the 17 Red contest against Cranbourne. The well drilled ROC side were back to their best building a ten goal lead by half time. They continued their march to-wards the biggest game of the year, winning 45 – 21. They now take on Narre Warren in a highly anticipated game of skill and future talent.Berwick and Cranbourne fought out a close match in D Grade, trading goals for the majority of the match. Cranbourne held onto their narrow lead in the final min-utes, winning by one goal to progress to the Grand Final against Beaconsfield. C Grade was a defensive battle between Berwick and Cranbourne. Berwick converted their defensive turnovers to take control of the match early. Berwick went on to win by nine goals and earn the opportunity to have a second chance against Bea-consfield. Berwick pulled off the upset of the day knocking out the B Grade ladder leaders, Narre Warren in a low scoring, scrappy match. Berwick’s defensive pressure rattled the Narre Warren attackers, limiting their scoring opportuni-ties and keeping them to their lowest score of the season. Berwick goalers, Emma Clarke and Nicole Westmore-land shot accurately to help their team progress to the Grand Final against Keysborough. After a flawless season and a narrow loss in the Semi Final, Doveton came out focussed against Berwick in the Preliminary Final, winning the first quarter 13 – 7. The Doveton goal circle moved smoothly with Rahni Sama-son on the end of some clever feeding from Kate Mur-phy. Berwick fought hard to bridge the margin, not al-lowing Doveton to stretch their lead. In the final quarter, Berwick goaler Emily Wilson stepped up to shoot some long bombs closing the margin to four goals at the fi-nal whistle. Doveton progress to the Grand Final, where they will meet Beaconsfield. Congratulations to all players, coaches and officials who have earned their chance to represent their club on the biggest day of the season. Berwick will be a sea of colour with Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Dove-ton, Keysborough, Narre Warren, Pakenham and ROC all participating. It is great to see a spread of clubs in this healthy competition playing for the ultimate prize.
Doveton DovesWell season 2014 is almost over. I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the successful year our club has had. Holding tryouts for the first time we have welcomed many new families to our club. I say families because that’s what this club is all about, new or old you become part of the Doveton family the moment you join our club. Some mixed results during the season with many sides suffering injuries, and changes to line-ups during the year. All sides however continued the support of each other and as such you have all been success-ful this year. Congratulations to our 13’s Red and White teams and our A Grade ladies on making the grand final. What a fantastic result for our great club. We will all be there to support you as you try and take it all the way. To our committee thank you, although it is a small group your contribution has been amazing. To our coaching staff thank you thank you for your tireless commitment to our club and your teams. To our parents that get your kids there every week thank you for your support. Thank You to our sponsors for your support this year. In finish-ing win or lose today you are all champions in the eyes of the club. Good Luck to all teams taking part in the grand final action. GO DOVES
Beaconsfield EaglesSaturdays day of finals saw 3 junior teams all fighting for a spot in the grand final. Our 13 whites came up against a strong Doveton team and unfortunately were beaten by a better team on the day. Our 15 reds came up against a competitive Pakenham side and unfortunately also couldn’t come away with a win.Full credit to both the 13’s and 15’s on a fantastic sea-son!! Netball Previewseason the girls played hard all game and fought hard for every ball. It was fantastic to see the girls maintain their lead for the whole game. Congratulations girlsGood luck to our 13 white, 17 white D grade C grade and A grade in their grand final this saturday!! Go beacy
Pakenham LionsAnother fantastic weekend of netball was had by all, starting with Friday’s League Presentation Night. It is ex-citing for us as a club to see our players poll so well in their grades and have Emma Jones (U15 Red) & Jessica Cox (U17 White) win the Best & Fairest & with Meaghan Atkins runner up for A Grade. Great to see Meaghan and Rachel Priestly named in the Team of the Year again, our sincere congratulations to all! Thank you to the Beaconsfield Netball Club for hosting another wonderful round of finals on Saturday. Our first game was our U13 White and this group of young tal-ented netball players were very excited to be at the Pre-liminary final in their first year of playing with the club! It was a great game of netball but it was not to be with Doveton coming away with the win. The next game time saw us on both courts with our U15 Red & White teams - what thrilling games of netball we witnessed and the teams both came away with wins to go into next week’s Grand Finals. Our last game of the day for the club was our U17 White team, and they gave it their all but was not to be with Beaconsfield taking the win. On behalf of the club we wish to acknowledge & thank each & every Pakenham Lions Player for their work and commitment given over the past season. To our amazing Coaches - thank you for your continuous hard work and effort in developing our players. We look forward to to-day’s Grand Final matches - Go Paky! ROC KangaroosCongratulations on a great season to the ROC 15 White girls, sadly it ended a week earlier than hoped as Paken-ham were just too strong in the prelim, showing more control and accuracy. It was great to see the ROC girls giving 110% for four quarters and keeping up the de-fensive pressure to the final whistle. Every player should be incredibly proud of their year and their improvement. Good luck to all teams in the Grand Final. Really good effort by ROC 17 Red girls after the disap-pointment of the previous week. The Preliminary Final
against Cranbourne we showed we were more than up for the challenge coming out Victors by 24 goals. Narre Warren in the Grand Final another challenge which I think we will be up for.48 minutes of hard work girls to the ultimate prize, I would like to say I am very happy and proud of each and every one of you girls and would like nothing more than for you to finish the hard work off that we started back in February. GO ROC
Cranbourne EaglesLast week in the Preliminary Final we had 3 teams in which was great for the club. The 17’s made an amazing achievement by making it into the Prelim final, but un-fortunately it wasn’t their day. Things that usually go right, they found quite difficult. The girls gave it their all and didn’t give up until the final whistle. We are very proud of you girls. In C Grade after a fantastic final series they unfortunately couldn’t get over hurdle of the prelim final. The girls fought hard to get there and were beaten by a stronger team on the day. The girls should be proud of where they have come this season and hold their heads high. In D grade it was a fantastic effort, everyone fought hard all day to come away with a 1 goal win. We now can’t wait for the Grand Final against Beaconsfield. Let’s go girls! We hope to have lots of support on the sidelines for this game and hopefully we can get over the line as winners. Good Luck girls!
Narre Warren MagpiesWith five junior sides heading straight to Grand Final, the loud Narre Warren support crew were in full voice to get B Grade and the 17s and senior footballers over the line. B Grade battled away for four quarters but couldn’t over-come the physical and relentless defense from Berwick, eventually going down by eight goals in a disappointing finish for the 2014 season. Our focus for Grand Final Day shifts towards the future of the club, with our juniors fly-ing the flag. The 13 Red side, led by coaches Michelle and Carly take on Doveton in the first encounter of Grand Final day. Both 15 & Under sides take on Paken-ham in their Grand Finals. Good luck to Mel and Maddy and their 15 Red side and Erin, Kate and Jess with the undefeated 15 White girls. In the much anticipated 17 Red grand final, Narre Warren will be aiming for another outstanding performance to defeat the well drilled ROC. Congratulations to Romy, Kacey, Olivia, Amy, Alex, Britt

and Erin for their individual awards at the Vote Count. Well done to all ten netball teams who were awarded the Netball Club Championship award and the combined football/netball championship award. Good luck to all those playing on the most important day of the season. The black and white army will be cheering loud and proud, supporting you from the sidelines. Thank you to the tireless volunteers who have given 100 netballers the opportunity to play at NWFNC in season 2014. CHEER, CHEER the BLACK and the WHITE!
Berwick WickersLast week saw some amazing quality finals netball, with some shock upsets across the board. Unfortunately our D grade girls took a one goal loss to Cranbourne, which eneded their finals series. Our A grade girls gave it eve-rything in the tank to try and compete with the unstop-pable Doveton side, narrowly missing out on a Grand Final berth by 5 goals. Congratulations to all of our senior teams on making it this far. You have all achieved a great deal for the club this season and should be very proud of your efforts. This week we will be supporting our B grade who are taking on Keysborough and C grade as they take on Bea-consfield. Both matches should be quality games. Be sure to get down and support from 12 Noon.Congratulations to the following players who received awards in their respective grades at the MPNFL league presentation night: A Grade: Team of the Year: Sarah McDermott WD, Olivia

But also another huge thank you to our amazing supporters who helped get our girls over the line last weekend - your support is very much appreciated by all. #blueisthecolour
Keysborough BurraThe winner of this game 1v2 will be straight into the Grand Final and we wanted that win! Weather was per-fect like the week before and we knew we had to play similar netball like that week as well to have any chance. We had a great start but didnt take Narre Warren long to find their feet going into the first break level. Second quarter was our best as goals were consistant, pressure applied and some handy intercepts allowed us with a 6 goal lead into the main break. At one stage we got out further to a 10 goal lead but Narre Warren fired in the last getting the game back to just 1 goal in the fi-nal stages. Tight defence by Sammi D and Sarah Vella allowed a couple of intercepts and which were happily converted by our goalers. We held on with a 4 goal win to go straight into the Grand Final. Exciting times to fin-ish of our 2014 season and as a club being apart of the Casey Cardinia League. We have no doubt we can take it all the way!

Doveton - A Grade
Liz Edwards – Co Coach – Versatile player that can play at any end of the court. Strong experienced player. Playing in defence or attacking end of the court will be a strong opponent that can take it up to any player. Natu Faanana – Co Coach – Coached the side for most of the year after having a baby early in the year. Has had limited court time, but has the experience and ability to take up any position on court. Rata Hunia – Has played all season in Goal Attack although a trained defender. Rata has proven to be a formidable opponent in attack. A great family lady who has embraced the club despite travelling from Craigieburn every week. Guaranteed to make any defenders job hard. Rahni Samason – Rahni is a young gaoler who has the composure of the most experienced players. Rahni remains focused during the game regardless of the style of defender on her. Rahni will go far in netball and can teach a lot of players about how to conduct yourself on the netball court.Kate Murphy – Kate is able to play any position in the mid court. Fast moving player delivers the ball to the gaolers with precision. Hard player to hold in the attacking end of the court. Aila Pera – Our main centre player Aila works tirelessly in the mid court. Aila can also be used in defence and has an amazing leap often catching her opponents off guard. Smart player knows how to position herself all over court.Linda Hunt – Linda is another versatile mid court player. Fast paced and hard to hold if playing in the attacking end. If tasked to the defence makes it almost impossible to break away from. Linda has an amazing leap often taking high intercepts. Maggie Taumaoe – Our gun defender Maggie is a tireless worker and hard to get past. Maggie is every gaolers worst nightmare she is fit fast and agile. Maggie will get numerous intercepts and reads the play as well as the best defenders. Ebony Mumford – Strong defender whose fitness is hard to match. Able to run out four quarters in the mid court with ease. Strong defender who racks up the intercepts all day. Great vocal leader on court. Kerry Mundy – Defence player joined the side late in the year. Fit into the side really well and covers the defensive end of the court. Tall player who can be very deceiving with her mobility around the court. If given a specific job to do on court gets it done.
