Throughoul the year, we al The DePauw WIe epecial lIeCtionll t.a havea litlle fun-we laugh al traditiolUl in lheback-t.o>lld>ool FretlhmanSurvival guide, and we plan for every IUlpecl of the Monon Bell game and Lit,.tIe 6 from game strategies t.a whal t.a wear and what to drink. Thill issue.though, wehavea moreseriOUll kind ofspecial section: an elec:tion one.

Purposefully coinciding with the DePauw~ne.we lhoughtit wasagood time to get people lhinkingabout lheissues. and remind and en<Xl\lJ'age everyone t.a vot,e. In the !lection, yw11 find arti<:lee deecribing specifICraces, how to vote abllenl.ee. a run-down ofhot-buuon issuea and moN!.

Eepecially here al DePauw, we're fond ofvocalizingopin>on.about anynumberofissUSlJ,butfrequently we'reguHlyoflackingllCl.ua1 action. Votingisarguablytheeaaiestwaytobolhvoi<:eouropinionllandacttochange.

You'd normally only see lhis type ofspecial secl.ion in The DePauw in apresidential election year. We decided to do one this year 8lI well. not justbecause it might tum out to be lhe most significant midterm elect.>on since1994,butalsobeeaWleourciviedutytovoteisimportanteveryyetlr,notjust every four. Youlh voting percentages are abyamal.ln lhe last midtermelection in 2002. only 22 percentoflhoeein the age group 18-29 voted. Mlong8ll we continue to shun lhepollll, politicians will continue to shun ourinteTellUl.

MOSl importantly. vot.ing is a right that we are oreryludty t.a have. Citi.zensin ot.hercountrielldie fighting for the right to vote; citizeOll in our owncountry have died fighting for and defending this right as well. Therefore.exen::ise it; aeton your opiniorul. and vote in the midterm electiorul Nov. 7.

In the Sept. 19 editorial of The DePauw, we highlighted lhe need fOT asmoke-free bar among our suggestions of lhings that would improve stu·dents' livCfl here in Greencalltle. Student Congrese recently petitioned fOTthe Walden Inn t.abellIDllke-free, and the 1bbacI.xJ Prevention andCeB8alionfor Putnam County organization has also been working to make the entirecounty smoke-free. Clearly, there is a great dCflire and need for smoke-fTeepublicsP8Cl'l1withavarietyofpopulatioOlladvocatinglheeeneede.

Congreu and the TelridenUl of Putnam County $hould be oommendedfor lheir efforts toward this goal. and the administrntion should beeommended for list, ening. In an al1-toorrnre, yel valued moment ofcommunication and unit.ed effort betweeneongreee and theadministralion. VicePreaident of Student Main James Lincoln announeed Thursday thatthe entire Walden Inn would be made a non-smoking building - includingThe Fluttering Duck bar.

Thill is an e:mmple of the positive changes that can happen when stu_dents, the community and administmtors communicate on importantiuues. lfwe put forth the ","ort. moreofl.en, our communilycould accom_pliah much more together, meeting the needll of all groups rather thandividing DePauw studenta and the greater GrecnC8lltle eommunity.

Thill is also a commendable iMta.noe of DePauw taking lhe lead on animportant social isINe_ Univenritiea, home to lI(lfnll of the brigh1.e8t. andmost progressive-minded people in thecount.ry,should,onsucl1 iasuc8,set examples for ot.hen to follow. The DePauw h8.$ previOUllly covered theUniversity's failinga regarding environmental isaueasuch 8lI recycling andCOTI8lJ'uetion in the Nature Park. It's nice to_ DePauw raising the bar.
