RABBI'S MESSAGEBy Rabbi Michael Gold

Dear Friends, Here is a part of the sermon I delivered on Kol Nidre night. The entire sermon is available in the office or on my website rab-bigold.com. I hope this sermon provides food for thought about how to make our wonderful synagogue even more successful. At least five of you forwarded an article to me that originally

appeared on Facebook. The gist of the article – younger people are not going to join synagogues, no matter what the dues. The article was very pessimistic. Even if synagogues were free, most young people will not join. They will not join until they are convinced that not simply the synagogue, but Judaism, will make a dif-ference in their lives. Let me quote from that article: “If rabbis are sought out mainly for lifecycle events and two holidays a year, rather than for moral, ethical, and spiritual develop-ment, then why would a free membership make any difference to the community long term? If rabbis do not have relationships with their members that are personal enough to help those members grow in their Judaism or to introduce members to the idea that Judaism has the potential to improve their lives, then after the lifecycle events or in the long years between them, it’s no wonder the value of membership becomes a pressing question. Provide value and people will pay. Show members the joy of Judaism and empower them to bring that joy home. Engage members with discussions on how to be a better person, a better parent, sibling, spouse, friend, and a more ethical business person, and they will come back for more. If Judaism cannot answer the big questions in life and be relevant in our homes and everyday life, then members will go somewhere else and take their dollars with them.” That is throwing down the gauntlet to myself as a rabbi and to our synagogue. How do we provide value to people’s lives? It is a question that has been asked by Professor Ron Wolfson, the strongest voice for synagogues to change their ways. He is the author of the book Relational Judaism; Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community. I have known Ron since we were students together in Los Angeles at the American Jewish University. Ron is a wonderful educator who has taken on the challenge of changing synagogue culture. I have heard him speak a number of times. Every time Ron gives a lecture, he stands at the door greeting everyone and chatting with them. He says that as a speaker, you cannot teach people until you relate to people. Ron has made it clear to us rabbis – deep learning and brilliant sermons are not enough. It does not matter how much you know until people know how much you care. Or to share a similar quote that I have heard attributed to people from Teddy Roosevelt to Zig Ziglar, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Synagogues must become places of relationships. People must greet people when they enter; the rabbi must greet them. It is not easy to conduct services and walk around greeting people at the same time. But I try. That is why, even on the High Holidays, I have told the congregation that I do not care how long it takes to carry the Torahs through the congregation. It is my chance to greet everyone. Synagogues are about relationships. They are about the relationships between Jews and other Jews, between Jews and the community. They are about the relationships between Jews and their Torah, their rabbis, cantors, and teachers of Torah. And finally, they are about relationships between Jews and God.Shalom, Rabbi Michael Gold

CANTOR'S MESSAGEBy Cantor Jonathan Angress

Dear Friends, As we finish up the High Holiday season, I quickly begin preparations for new and exciting musical and educational programs this coming year. I am looking forward to being involved in a few excellent projects along with the Pre-School, Hebrew School, and synagogue staff. In October, our Hebrew School will be participating in the nationwide Shabbat Project where they will be spending all of Shabbat here at TBTST on October 23rd-24th. I am par-

ticularly looking forward to engaging with the students by telling them spooky Jewish stories, campfire style. That same Shabbat we will also be having Pajama Havdalah where I will lead the Havdalah service entirely in my pajamas! If you have ever been to Disneyworld, you will remember how magical of a place it is. Even as an adult, I still try to go on a regular basis in order to stay in touch with my inner child. I am proud to announce that we will be bringing a bit of the Disney magic to TBTST. On Friday night December 11th, we will be having our Disney Shabbat with the entire Friday Night service sung to Disney tunes! Come dressed as your favorite Disney character! Beginning in October, I will be starting a series of 5 classes to learn trope and how to read Torah. The classes will be on October 18th, November 1st, November 8th, November 22nd, and December 5th. If you are interested in learning more in-formation about these classes, please send me an email! I am also pleased to announce that we will be reviving A Jewish Night On Broad-way in the spring. The exact date is yet to be determined but I can guarantee a fun night of theatre and music with another one of my Broadway friends!B’Shalom,Cantor Jonathan Angress

August 23 Mitzvah Day/Open House a Big Success

The Tikkun Olam Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank our membership and community for all their hard work to make this an awesome Mitzvah Day/Open House event. Your efforts succeeded in completing these worthy projects: We filled 170 knapsacks with donated school supplies and delivered them to the National Youth Advocate Program and the Harvest Drive Program. These organizations help children in need. We made 500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for LifeNet4Families (formerly Broward Cooperative Feeding Service). We had a very successful Blood Drive thanks to our community and membership efforts. We gave beautiful blankets to the children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. We also collected luggage and backpacks for JAFCO, and sorted and donated clothing to Kid’s Kloset/ RAK PAK. The list goes on and on. Thanks to all for a job well done! We also want to thank our sponsors who helped make this event possible: Sterling Caterers, Winn-Dixie at McNab Road, Sam’s Club of Coral Springs and Publix. Watch the Scroll for a save-the -date notice for our next event. Karen Renzer and Jacqui Montag

Why Not Join a Committee?

As it happens, much of the “work” of TBTST and most of the planning takes place in committees. So, committee mem-bership is a great place to begin becoming involved in synagogue life. Every congregation relies on its volunteers both to work and to lead. Most committees are open to all who are interested and willing to participate. Two committees that are very in-terested in finding new, enthusias-tic members are the Membership Committee, and the Marketing and Communications Committee. Volunteers are always welcome to be part of our Tikkun Olam com-mittee, the sponsors of our enor-mously successful annual Mitzvah Day. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in the Adult Education Committee. Our Ways and Means Committee serves as a program committee and manages many of our synagogue events. Extra hands are always sought to help in those activities. If you have children, you know about our PTOs. Keep them in mind as well. Both the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club sponsor programs and support activities that benefit the synagogue. They both do their work in a social atmosphere and many deep friendships have arisen among their members. If the notion of a committee conjures up the world of corporations, cubicles and bureaucracy (ours are much friendlier by the way) think about becoming active in one of our auxiliaries. Only you know what might interest you and, if you do, let the office know and they will put you in touch with the relevant chairperson. If you know that you would like to help, but are unsure about just what you might enjoy doing, talk to one of the officers of the congregation or to the presidents of the Sisterhood or the Men’s Club.

Share Your Experienceswith the TBTST Family

• Do you plan to visit an interesting city, museum or event this summer, or have you done so already?• Have you read a great book with Jewish content that you’d like to share with others?• Or, seen a film that really moved you?• Did a recent experience help you to see things in a different way?•Do you belong to an organization that does good work and that we should know about?•Do you want to share a great web site that you have found valuable in your Jewish life?•Do you have a family recipe (kosher, of course) that you think your friends at TBTST would like to know about?

Why not share it?

If you have a topic that you think would be of interest to other congregants, let us know. We’ll ask you to write a short article (emphasis on short!) about your experience for possible insertion into the Scroll and to provide pic-tures if relevant. Writing should be conversational in tone and if you mention other congregants in your article, please confirm their approval in advance.

Bring it Home from Les Miserables. Les Mis is an unforget-table story of heartbreak, passion and the resilience of the human spirit. The show is ultimately about doing the right thing. Throughout the show, you see people faced with choices and forced to make personal sacrifices that affect the greater good. It is a beautiful message of the power of doing the right thing; a great study of right and wrong. At the end, one leaves the theatre with hope. I hope Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek fulfills your needs.

I hope we are a congregation dedicated to meeting the spiritual, intellectual, social and cultural expectations of our members with help from Rabbi Gold and Cantor Angress and with help from our Sisterhood and Men’s club led by Ellen Feldman and Dr. Barry Kanarek respectively.I hope we provide a Jewish education to our children and be a congregation that opens the minds of our children and instills within them a sense of what it is to be a Jew…. with the help of our ECC Director Sydney Berlin and our Curriculum Coordinator: Ronit Goldstein, our Religious Coordinator: Ava Phillips and our Youth Group Director: Diana Silver.I hope we are a congregation of individuals that join together for worship, study, social action, tikkun olam, and in celebration.I hope we provide our members with a sense of comfort and a sense of community.Whereas this is a description of what I hope TBTST affords all of us today, in order for us to continue…..and to do even more, we need each one of you to meet the challenge and provide the generous financial support that we need. The annual dues we pay to be a member and the religious school tuition does not fund our

“b’sever panim yafot “ The above quote ends the second-to-last tractate in the order of Nezikin (damages) in the Talmud. The tractate is more often known as Pirkei Avot, literally, the Chapters of our Fathers. Interestingly, in Modern Hebrew it is a common expression used to denote “with open arms.” Our president and board have been discussing the concept of “with open arms,” not in a Toraic concept but with the idea of becoming a more welcoming and engaging Congregation. Every committee of our congregation is open to the concept. We need volunteers and we need you to think about how you can help. We have several active committees who do much of the planning that make membership in TBTST so valuable to so many. Everyone is looking for people to step forward and share their expertise, opinions and time to make those efforts successful. Of course, the Men’s Club and the Sisterhood are obvious places for you to help support activities that benefit TBTST. The Men’s Club motto – doing good while having fun – really belongs to all of them. In the Scroll, you often read about the Tikkun Olam/Mitzvah committee. Committed hands are always welcome. The membership committee has a number of projects that would help you feel more engaged while welcoming others. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in widening the work of the Membership Committee and our Ways and Means Committee is not just an “ask for money” group, but is involved in planning many of our events. And, by the way the Scroll would be happy to have you aboard as well.

Is Temple Beth TorahSha'aray Tzedek

In Your Will?

The synagogue’s role begins at birth and continues with-out interruption throughout the entire course of our lives. By remembering the synagogue in our wills, we can do our part to assure future generations that their religious home will be there to serve. We depend upon more than just dues alone to sustain all that we do. If we are concerned about the future of Judaism, we must project its influence and our influ-ence into the future. Few memorials are more worthy than those provided by an en-dowment to TBTST through a bequest. Your legacy can reflect everything that is most im-portant and meaningful to you. You can declare where your funds might be used – to supply the Hebrew School, for example, or to support one of TBTST’s designated funds. We all want TBTST to be a spiritual home for genera-tions to come, just as it has been for you and your family. Let us ensure the future of our congregation and help it grow and serve our people.

As many of you may not have realized, it is a long way from Delray to Tamarac. The good news is that my wife and I are now living in Tamarac and only 2.5 miles from the Temple. Interestingly enough it seems the extra time I have spent in the car commuting I now spend at the Temple working. How did I ever get things finished in those shorter hours? Well, there are many reasons things got done. We have a hard working staff, as well as helpful committee chairs, and board

members that are always willing to pitch in. Of course Nancy our President is available no matter what time of day or night. A community that helps one another is a strong community. When we first moved to Tamarac, only a few weeks ago I might add, my wife Cheryl had no idea where to go for Kosher food. In Delray we had a Glick’s Market, and they were just a few miles away. Here in Tamarac, I was told go to the Winn Dixie just off University. So on a Friday afternoon with most of our possessions still in boxes, Cheryl made the trek to find food for Shabbat. We had candles and wine, but nothing else, not even a Challah. While we were in the checkout lane armed with our Friday night dinner, which included a small pareve apple pie for desert, yummy! It is this apple pie that was noticed by a nice lady named Florence. Florence was asking about the pie, it must have looked good. Oh, by the way it was good! So Cheryl offered her the pie, but of course Florence did not accept it. After the checkout the two ladies kept talking. A little ways into the conversa-tion, Cheryl mentions that we had just recently moved, and was picking up our first Shabbat meal, since our relocation. Florence continued the conversation and proudly mentioned, “My Grandson is the Cantor at a Synagogue in Tamarac”. From what I understand, this is when Cheryl burst out into a big smile and said “Cantor Jonathon Angress.” Florence responded with a big smile and said “Yes”. Cheryl then told Florence she was married to Ken the Business Manager and she knows the Cantor very well. “Bark, Bark”, goes my phone, (my ringtone is a barking dog). I answer and Cheryl asks “Do you want to go to Florence and Irwin Schwartz’s tonight for Shab-bat dinner? The Cantor will be there. Well I immediately knew who Florence and Irwin were, I had met them several months back. So to make a long story short, we had a wonderful Shabbat evening. We talked for hours after dinner. It was a Shabbat to remember. I would like to thank Florence and Irwin Schwartz for inviting us to dinner. I can tell you from this as well as many similar experiences that we are very happy to be part of such a “Warm and Inviting Community”.

With the High Holidays behind us, we are beginning to dis-cuss fall in the classrooms and explaining that the fall season brings cooler weather, changing leaves and a crispness to the air. This is such a confusing lesson to teach preschoolers who live in Florida. We talk about this magical concept of seasons. Seasons that bring changing leaves and cooler air in fall, ice and snow in winter, then beautiful blooming flowers in spring. Unfortunately, all our children ever see and experience is sum-

mer heat, sun and rain! This concept is quite the mystery to young Floridians. So instead, we have to get creative so our children can really feel what living in the north is like and feel like they are experiencing the change in seasons.

We are hoping Florida will get the memo that it’s fall as we are anxiously awaiting the cooler weather-if only for a day or two. With cooler weather, we get to spend more time outside. Whether it’s on the playground, or taking our classroom learn-ing outside, we try to enjoy it every way possible. Sukkot just ended and we were fortunate enough to be able to use the Sukkah almost every day. The classes enjoyed eating snack in the Sukkah, having story time and building edible Sukkahs as well. In October our after school enrichment program begins. This program is open to any child who is preschool age. The classes run from 3-4pm and we offer a differ-ent program each day. This session we are offering Knock on Wood, Spanish, Art, Soccer, Karate, Cheerleading, Swim Lessons and Tumbling. If you are interested in enrolling your child please call the ECC office. Our PSO is gearing up for their largest fundraiser of the school year, Grandparents/Family Day, which will be held on Sunday, October 25th. The PSO just hosted a wine & cheese meet and greet for all parents. We had a great turnout! It’s always so nice to see so many parents coming together to support their children and our school. Our Socialites program kicks off on Tuesday, October 13th. This is a kids club/youth group just for children in PreK, K and 1st grade. Anyone is welcome to join and we still have a few spots open. Our first Tot Shabbat of the year will be held on Friday, Nov. 20th at 6pm. It’s a Thanksgiving themed Shabbat with a children’s Shabbat dinner to follow. Call the ECC office for more information and to make your reservation, 954-722-9537. Also, save the date for our Scholastic Book Fair from December 7th-11th. We are also hosting a PJ Library Family Night on Thursday, December 10th. More details will be out soon. As always, we would love as much support of our events as possible. We hope to see you there!

Childhood memories last a life time. We all have special memories from our childhood that we hope to pass down to our children. One of my special memories is the way we celebrated Shabbat in Israel. No matter where you live in Israel, whether it is in a secular neighborhood or in an orthodox one, the atmosphere of Shabbat is a special one. The rush to make last shopping for Shabbat, the smells of the fresh challah and multicultural foods and the excitement of preparation for Shabbat, are unforget-

table. Friday late afternoon, all the stores are closed. The streets are almost empty. Periodically you can hear a mom calling to her child from her kitchen window, to come home and get ready for Shabbat. The challah is covered, the wine is in the cup, the chicken noodle soup is boiling and the chicken is in the oven. My dad walks in at the last minute. This is the one day of the week where we all sit together around the table for a family meal. We sing Shabbat songs, eat, laugh and spend some quality time together. As we grew older, our priorities changed. We no longer wanted to spend the time with our family on Shabbat. We rushed through the meal, just to go out and meet our classmates for a class social event. The meeting place: the hills of the Tel Aviv University. We all sat in the dark and engaged in endless conversations. Once we joined the army, Shabbat dinners changed again. The magic was no longer there. The traditions faded away and became a treasured memory. I was introduced to the Shabbat Project about a year ago by one of our Hebrew School parents. It began in South Africa about three years ago, in the attempt to revive the spirit of Shabbat. The vision of the project is that Jews around the world will observe Shabbat in unity. Communities are encouraged to create their own unique program that suits their congregation's needs. This year, the Shabbat Project will fall on the weekend of Oct. 23-24. What a wonderful way to create long last-ing memories for our next generation! Our Hebrew School will join forces with the Youth Department to plan an unforgettable weekend, where students will be able to spend the whole weekend in shul and be engaged in fun, interactive activi-ties alongside spiritual ones. In preparation for the event, our students will learn the different aspects of observing Shabbat. Prayers, rituals and customs will be discussed according to students’ age groups and levels of understanding. Families and all congregation members are welcome to join as well. Let us all come together to support our youth and together we can create a new long lasting tradition. To register, please log to: http://goo.gl/forms/XiuUibqpke

Convention Season is in the AirBy: Samantha Gaynor

For some people, fall reminds them of colorful leaves, changing of the season, and maybe of Halloween being around the corner. For USY and Kadima, fall is all about the upcoming conventions! Both USY and Kadima get to enjoy amazing weekends in the month of October. USY Fall Subs takes an interesting turn with everyone staying

at home hospitality instead of the usual hotel. Most of the plans have not yet been released, but we do know the convention follows the usual agenda of services, fun programs, and a fun Saturday night program to round it off. Some of the events are taking an interesting twist this year. USYers get to choose which topic they would like to participate in for the education portion of the weekend. Convention is hosted by BTBRC and will take place October 16-18, and will surely be one to remember. Get ready to have some green eggs and Hebrew National salami, at the Dr. Seuss themed Kadima convention. They might just find someone who speaks for the trees at the Gold Coast campsite, where the convention takes place from October 23-25. The jam-packed weekend mimics the usual agenda of a USY convention with services, fun programs, and a dance to round it off. This will be some Kadimaniks’ first convention so they can get the chance to bond with the TBTST chapter and other chapters in the sub-region. Both Kadimaniks and USYers look forward to their sub-regional conventions, whether it’s their first convention or not. As always, we’ll make new friends and spend time with the old ones in two unforgettable weekends.

DON’T• Wear inappropriate clothing• Skip activities—even if you might not like what’s planned, you could surprise

yourself by having a really great time, so don’t miss out on opportunities.• Bully ANYONE—USY is a safe place for teens and that atmosphere must be

respected.• Behave inappropriately or do anything against convention rules—everyone wants

to have a fun weekend so misbehaving will only get in the way of a good time.• Be afraid to get wacky! USYers often bring fun things to conventions like

onesies or crazy socks, so you’re encouraged to bring things that you might not normally use.

DO

• Make new friends—convention is a great opportunity to meet new people.• Stay in touch with your new friends—the best part of meeting new people is

seeing them after convention ends.• Be punctual to programs—early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable!• Be yourself—USY and Kadima are judge-free environments and it is always

okay to be who you are around your friends.• And most importantly - Have fun!!!

Sisterhood Announces Afternoon MeetingsTo be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month,

We are looking forward to your attendance!

TBTST SISTERHOODBy Ellen Feldman, President

Parking Lot Safety

Did you know that one of the likeliest places to be involved in a fender bender is in a parking lot? People seem to suspend their good judgment when looking for a parking space or when pulling out of one. Coming in, our first reaction is to dart forward to be the first to claim the closest spot possible. In our parking lot, most people park face in. There is nothing wrong with that, but you have to be extra cau-tious when backing out, because the car just opposite you may be doing the same thing at the same time. Always make a 360 degree check as you back out. Also, if you are here during the week, remember that our parking lot is accessed via 94th Avenue and there is both an elementary and a middle school just across the street. Watch out for kids crossing the street before you make your turn onto 94th Avenue. Be sure to check the time and to observe the school zone speed limits if they are in force. Here are some other tips:

• Hide or remove your valuables when leaving your car and be sure to lock the car when you step way. Even if you are just picking up your child from our Hebrew School, it only takes a minute for a thief to grab your cell phone or your purse.

• Leave your engine running until you’ve gathered everything and you’re ready to get out of the car but be sure to turn it off when you do.

• Be alert to notice other people in the parking lot. If your sixth sense urges caution, heed it and do not leave the car.

• When you’re walking back to your car, keep your keys in hand, so you can get into the car quickly.

• If you are looking for your car, press the lock door key, not the open door key to get your car to tell you where it is.

• Lock your doors once you get inside the car.

By the time this Scroll reaches all of you, we will have welcomed in the New Year 5776 and kicked off our year’s upcoming events with the opening program of Bingolada. Always fun, this was no exception! On Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00p.m. we will be presenting a joint program with the Youth Department sponsored by the

organization Step Up For Israel. Step Up For Israel, whose Campaign Chairs are Professor Alan Dershowitz and Ambassador Dore Gold, “is an international grassroots campaign that connects individuals and communities to Israel by providing a strong foundation in Israel education and activist opportunities.” We will be presenting the documentary “CROSSING THE LINE - PART II”. This film reveals the rise of anti-Israel activity and anti-Semitic rhetoric on North American university campuses, and demonstrates when reasonable criticism of Israel “Crosses the Line’ into anti-Semitism. THIS PROGRAM IS A MUST SEE FOR EVERYONE! It is opened to the entire congregation. Following the film a discussion will be led by Matt Weisbaum, Managing Director of Jerusalem U, responsible for developing education programs and activism initiatives. If you have college-aged children or grandchildren this is one program you should not miss!! Please RSVP to the office. Sisterhood and Men’s Club will be sponsoring a very special weekend in the month of November. Saturday, November 21st will be a special Shabbat honoring all our veterans. If you are a war veteran and would like to participate in Shabbat Services, please contact the office! On Sunday, November 22nd, we will have our annual Holiday Boutique, followed by a luncheon and a unique program honoring Jewish War Veterans. Dr. Judi Benson-Levinson, author, historian and creator of “SAND IN OUR BOOTS”, MIAMI BEACH WWII VETERANS REUNIONS, will present her fascinating slide show and talk. She describes the major role South Florida played in the war effort. Nearly 500,000 troops passed thru, turning Miami Beach into the “most beautiful boot camp in America” and changed South Florida for years. This program, too, is open to the entire congregation. Join us! Sisterhood will be experiencing SHABBAT AT SEA during a fabulous 3 day cruise aboard NCL’s Norwegian Sky. This will be the weekend of January 22nd-January 25th. Sail with us as we observe Shabbat, participate in services, and have fun with all our fantastic women. Deadline is November 1st. Sisterhood could not be the successful arm of the synagogue without the members who step up and give of their time and expertise when needed. This past month Dianne Solomon was just that woman. A huge Todah Rabah goes out to Dianne for coming to our aid in solving our Gmail problem! We could not have resolved the issues we were having without her help. Many thanks!....B’Shalom…Ellen

Why Not Join aChavurah?

As part of our New Roads to Engagement Project, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek is encouraging couples or families to bring their com-mon interests to the syna-gogue. This is not a religious group, but a group of family or friends that want to social-ize together. Perhaps it is an existing group of friends that you join each month to have dinner with, see a movie or attend a play. Any group of people with common inter-ests can form a Chavurah. Shortly, you will receive a brochure and questionnaire describing this concept, and asking only for you to complete and return the questionnaire to the syna-gogue office. Based on your responses, we will form a group that fits your needs. Please join with us as we reach out and engage our congregation. Watch for our brochure!

Men’s ClubBarry Kanarek, M.D., President - [email protected]

The TBTST Men’s Club will be meeting later this month to choose its slate of Officers and BOD members for 2015/2016. As I have mentioned previously this has been a year of re-structuring. It is our goal to be able to shortly begin a series of Sunday morning breakfast programming with topics that will be of interest across all our demographics. We will update you in the next edition of the Scroll.

We will of course continue with those events that have traditionally been spear-headed by our Club. These include building the Sukkah, World Wide Wrap and the Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle Program as well as Men’s Club Shabbat.

This month we will be selecting a Man and Youth of the Year to be honored on November 15th with those chosen from other Temples in the South Florida Region. As you may remember we hosted this most successful event at our Temple last year.Again, on behalf of the Officers and Board of the TBTST Men’s Club we wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year and expect to have some great programing for you in the near horizon.

In Brotherhood,Barry Kanarek, M.D.

What is HAZAK?by Marvin Kaleky

HAZAK is the new group at TBTST especially for those of us over age 55. HAZAK is meant not only to enrich the lives of the members of the chapter but to enrich the congregation at large.HAZAK chapters have supported the kehillot by participating in services, volunteering in our schools, designing programs to teach about the Holocaust for our high school students. The HAZAK chapters are lay driven and professionally supported, and United Synagogue has materials and the ability to have a new chapter mentored by an existing successful chapter to help them through their first year. Some of the wonderful events held during the year under the sponsorship of United Synagogue are our Annual HAZAK Shabbat, our one full week in June of Camp/Elderhostel in the Catskills, and trips to Israel totally designed for the mature adult. We want you to join us for a wonderful experience in both social and educational experiences. Our next meeting will take place at TBTST Tuesday morning Oct. 13, 2015 at 10 am. We hope to see you there. Please feel free to call me at (954)270-6122.

Are You On the List?

TBTST’s Sunshine Commit-tee notifies email recipients of the life events of fellow con-gregants in a timely manner. The committee sends notices of births, engagements, wed-dings, funerals, shiva details and hospitalizations.

If you would like to receive notices of Sunshine Joy or Sunshine Sadness, and would like to be added, please pro-vide your email address to [email protected].

Yahrzeit

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative. All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Stories in IsraelBy Janet Workman

“Every woman has a story”-that was the theme of the women’s leadership tour I recently took of Israel. First, we learned about early pioneers of Israel- the men and women who rolled up their sleeves and worked the land. Of course, we visited all the places that a first-timer to Israel should visit. We walked through the water tunnels in Jerusalem. We prayed at the Kotel and left our prayers in the cracks of the Western Wall. We saw the old city of Jaffa. We took cable cars up Masada and floated in the Dead Sea. All along our way, and through the sweltering heat of July, we met incredible people and heard their stories. Some stories were ancient and Biblical, others historical, still others modern. On one trip, at the Golan Heights, we met a group of young French men and women. They are “lone soldiers” who have left their homes to serve in the Israeli army, without ever serving their own county! Their dedication and love of Israel was inspiring. At Na Laga’at, we saw a performance by blind and deaf women and men. Each had dreams, hopes, and goals. Each person had their own story, often heartbreaking, but always moving. In Tel Aviv, inside the Rubin museum, we learned the story of Reuven Rubin and the early years of pioneering Israel. Each beautiful painting had a story.

Also In Tel Aviv, we met Tommie, a young “urban ecologist” who showed us her home, shared recipes and her “hippy-esque” story of conservation. This is her vision of Utopia that includes composting, veganism and living co-operatively with others.

At the Ethiopian Absorption Center, we met Charad and Nomi, who performed the traditional Coffee Ceremony, or Buna, for us. Their dramatic stories of rescue and restoration in Israel brought tears to all our eyes. Their beauty and courage was amazing. The bread they baked for us was warm and delicious. This encounter is my most cherished memory of Israel. In the Shuk (market), we met Julie, a 74 year old Egyptian Jewish woman

with a teeny, tiny restaurant off a side street. We entered her kitchen and picked out the dishes we wanted to try-stuffed beets, rice dishes, lentils, and many other delicacies. The food was brought to our table by Julie’s family and she entertained us with dancing! The visit to Yad Vashem was a solemn one. Our guide’s parents were both survivors and this trip is particularly difficult for her. We heard her story of silence. We also heard the story of Janusz Korczak, Polish scholar and educator, who died with the children of his orphanage, rather than save himself. In Akko, we met women of different faiths at the “Women House for Peace” where it is believed

that peace will only originate and be sustained through women. I personally share this belief. At Z’Karon Ya’Akov, we learned of the Aaronson family. In particular, heroic woman spy, Sarah

Aaronson, and her incredible story of bravery and sacrifice. I also had the chance to see my cousin, Ira, and his family in the settlement of Male Adumin. I

learned the story of his daughter Michal, approaching her final month of National Service as-sisting Alzheimer’s patients.

All throughout my journey, I didn’t just see the beautiful, ancient sights of Israel, but I heard the stories of her heroes and heroines from the past, present and future. I believe we all have a story to tell and I am happy to share this story of my education, adventure and inspiration in Israel 2015.

Tree of LifeThe tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi-tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.
