The month of March was a very busy month with 68 calls for service and only two incident-free days. There were three burglaries, two acts of vandalism, one traffic accident, eight solicitations, 20 pick up truck violations, and 114 garage doors left open or unattended.

A resident reported an attempted burglary where the handle of a rear sliding-glass lanai door was pried off from the outside. Investigation indicated no entry gained into the residence and no missing items.

In a similar incident, a resident reported a large quantity of fishing equipment, valued at $1,400, stolen from the garage area of the residence. There was no sign of forced entry, the outside door to the garage was locked, and the windows appeared secured.

Safety CommitteeUnauthorized solicitations on the rise in The Meadows

By Walter Huff—Safety Committee Chairman

This event may have occurred because of an open or unattended garage door.

Another resident

reported the theft of several personal items from an unlocked vehicle parked in an open bay garage.

We have reported in the past that the theft of copper wire, as well as copper and aluminum components, is widespread through Sarasota County. This trend is

continuing, and we have had incidents in The Meadows.

Last month, we reported a large quantity of copper wire was stolen from a Florida Power and Light (FPL) truck parked in the Map/Mailbox area. Another incident in March involved theft of a large aluminum water control gate from one of our retention ponds. We expect this activity to continue, and we caution all residents to secure all items of this nature, especially air conditioners and heat pumps.

The number of unauthorized solicitation campaigns continues to increase dramatically, with eight incidents during March. We have been successful in identifying the violators and preventing them from returning to The Meadows. If you see such activity taking place, please report it to the Safety Patrol immediately.

Letters must be signed and include a return address.Issues must be of interest to a large portion of The Meadows and cannot express personal grievances.Constructive criticism will be accepted, but must include solutions to the concerns.Obscene or derogatory remarks will not be published. We reserve the right to edit letters in the interest of space or to refuse publication of objectionable content.

Articles and Monthly ColumnsWe welcome Meadows residents to submit articles of interest to the general community to The Meadoword. We reserve the right to copy edit all articles for accuracy, content, and length. We will not publish articles that contain offensive material or inaccu-rate information. I am happy to report that the new members of the Assembly Executive Committee are John Hay, Joy Howes, Judy Lynch, and Ken Shepard.

Connie Logan retired from the Executive Committee, and we all thank her very much for her dedication to the Assembly.

The Executive Committee elected John Hay as Vice-Chair and Ken Shepard as Secretary. Anthony Sawyer will continue to be the MCA Board liaison.

At the Assembly of Property Owners meeting of April 16, Edward J. McCrane Jr., Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief, spoke on “What You Need To Know” regarding emergency

management issues. Bob Harrigan from ABC News 7 will speak May 21 on “Hurricane Preparedness.” Both of these talks on emergency and hurricane preparedness are timely with our 2008 hurricane season beginning next month.

We have had significant improvement in attendance at our Assembly of Property Owners meetings in the last year. There are many Associations who either still do not have or do not

send delegates to the Assembly meetings. It is important for all Associations to be represented so their delegates can take pertinent and timely information back to their Associations.

We will continue to monitor attendance and hope to find ways to encourage delegates to attend these important meetings.

The next Assembly meeting is on May 21 at 7:00 pm. We hope to see all our delegates at that meeting. We ask that delegates please sign in and wear their name tags so they can be identified and their attendance verified.

All other Meadows residents are also encouraged to attend the Assembly meetings and to stay afterwards for cookies, coffee, and conversation.

Theft of copper wire, copper, and aluminum components continues to spread in Sarasota—be sure to secure these items, especially on air conditioners and heat pumps

May 2008

On March 24, 2008, The Meadows Community Association held the semi-annual meeting of the Presidents’ Council, which consists of the Presidents of all condominium and homeowners associations in The Meadows. The attendance was excellent—about 80 Presidents and Board Members attended, thanks in large part to our Vice-President Ernie Fortin, who took it upon himself to call all of the Presidents to remind them of the meeting.

This meeting was very informative and covered legal updates, insurance issues, water conservation, traffic on Longmeadow, and The Meadows towing and meeting room policies. Lunch followed, courtesy of TruScapes. All in all, the event took about two hours.

I would like to thank all the Presidents who took some of their valuable time to attend the meeting. Hopefully, they gained valuable knowledge that will help them run their respective organizations. If there are subjects that any association would like to discuss at our upcoming Presidents’ Council in November, please let me know.

Regarding the traffic issue on Longmeadow, The Meadows Community Association and The Meadows Country Club are hard at work on the final details of an agreement that is acceptable to both parties. Goodwill and reasonableness will prevail, I am sure.

As you probably read in The Meadoword, we have experienced difficulty with the conduct of some individuals who tried to disregard the rights of their neighbors and our community at large. I am pleased to share with you that those problems appear to have abated. We requested that the owners of the properties involved come to our office and meet with our manager,

the Chief of Security, and me. During these meetings, we politely explained that all our residents have the right of quiet enjoyment of their properties and that the conduct in question was simply

not acceptable. It appears to have worked.

Now, turning our attention to the grounds, several people, including a representative of The Meadows Country Club, have said that the grounds have never looked better. I agree that TruScapes is performing a wonderful job. Our thanks to all concerned in keeping our community looking the best.

The beautiful fountain at Longmeadow and 17th Street is up again and running. It is a beautiful sight for all of us to enjoy. Sometimes we only realize how much we miss the fountain when it is down for repairs. Now, hopefully, we can view the fountain without interruption. Please understand that, because of governmental restrictions, we can only operate the fountain eight hours a day—8:00 am to 11:00 am and 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Finally, being somewhat familiar with other communities similar to The Meadows, it never ceases to amaze me the richness of what we have. The Meadows Community Association has so many functions run by our volunteers that we are literally the envy of everybody else. That richness and quality of life are because of our outstanding volunteers. To them goes the credit and our thanks.

Wonderful job. Thank you!

Meadows Shopping Village appearance inconsistent with that of

nearby Meadows Communities

Dear Editor, The Meadoword

The beginning of this letter is addressed to the members of the Main-tenance and Safety Committees of the MCA. To all of you I say sincerely, “Thank you.”

I have been an owner in The Meadows since 1985. I have watched this community develop, expand, and mature during those 2 years. And, in all that time, the grounds have never looked better than they do today. They are lush, beautifully landscaped and meticulously cared for. The new speed bumps, widened walkways, and pedestrian signs have all increased our safety on which we have come to depend with the growth of this commu-nity. It is because of all this great care that I am at a loss to understand how the grounds of the Shopping Village on Ringwood Meadow could exist in such a state of abandon and neglect. It was only recently that I learned that the Shopping Village property is not owned by the MCA, but rather by Hall Equity Corporation.

A closer look at the area reveals two decayed, hollowed-out trees near the “Village Center” sign and Building A, numerous pine and oak trees with skeletal branches dripping with Spanish moss, clusters of palm trees bur-dened with seasons of un-booted fronds, and dead shrubbery between the entry/exit lanes. On the ground, there are food wrappers, empty cans, enough kindling to fire up a hundred fireplaces, and almost an inch of dried oak leaves, much deeper around the water tank fencing and dumpster cage. In fact, if it were not for this layer of oak leaves, we’d be looking at dry, sandy dirt. When those leaves become wet on the roadway, they can be very slip-pery. But worse, they could kindle a fast-paced fire begun from the careless toss of a cigarette.

One only has to look across the street at Village Lake or Willow Links to see the disparity between those well-maintained areas and the neglected Shopping Village grounds.

On a recent stroll on the sidewalk along Ringwood Meadow, I ap-proached the 20-foot Shopping Village pillar. It was a particularly windy day. Suddenly, there was a loud crack. Before I had a chance to react, one of the dead fronds from a nearby palm came whirling at me, barely missing my head. Dead fronds are left to rot in and around the hedge circling that pil-lar. Friends have told me that they have almost fallen when they stepped and rolled on the scattered acorns in the parking lot.

In the April issue of The Meadoword, President Anthony Sawyer stated, “Our residents have the right to demand and expect the quiet enjoyment of their property and the right to be safe in our community.” Hall Equity may own the property, but this corporation does not have the right to jeopardize the safety of the residents of The Meadows and patrons of the Shopping Vil-lage. Responsibility is a consequence and duty of ownership.

It is my hope that Hall Equity Corporation will act responsibly to fully maintain and care for its property. This was once a jewel of our neighbor-hood, thriving with activity. I would love to see it restored to its original, natural beauty.

The Restrictions Committee has received over the past 60 days a large number of applications from homeowners requesting architectural review. Many of these are routine requests; however, some fall into various categories that require more time and effort to resolve.

Since I was named Chairman of this committee approximately eight weeks ago, I have spent at least two mornings a week with Mark Schaefer visiting the home sites of all owners who submitted applications. Mark has gone out of his way to explain to me the pros and cons of all our ultimate decisions. My thanks to him for sharing his vast knowledge.

The MCA Board and the Restrictions Committee are dedicated to serving The Meadows in a fair, unbiased manner. Keeping in mind that a reasonable rule or restriction is logical, they address a specific problem

with a specific solution that is rational and not too broad or too restrictive.

Please continue to submit your applications for architectural review and approval; it will help to ensure a high-quality of life for our residents and to preserve, protect, and enhance property values.

Last, but not least, I want to thank all the Restrictions Committee members for their past service. I look forward to working together in the future.

Storm shuttersThe MCA Board of Directors

made a decision in 2006 to expand the opportunity for residents to leave approved shutters in place. The MCA allows storm shutters, approved by the MCA architectural review process to remain in place from May 1 through November 0. Each home or condo will be considered on a case-by-case basis for material, installation process, color, and compatibility.

If you have not received approval for storm shutters, and a storm watch is issued for our area, you may use any type of protection on your windows and glass doors. That protection must be removed immediately after the storm passes.

Condominium or Home-owners Associations may have stricter requirements that do not allow shutters to remain in place. But, the MCA urges all

Associations to be reasonable, consider the peace of mind of out-of-town owners, and remember that we live in an area where storms come toward us all summer and into the fall.

Prepare for storm season

Next month is the beginning of the tropical storm and hurricane season. In the June issue of The Meadoword, we will have more information on that subject. This is just a reminder to get your hurricane plans and survival kits ready by mid-May. (In 1997, a storm formed in the Gulf of Mexico in late May, became a tropical storm about May 28, and headed right for us.) Know where you will go if it is necessary to evacuate when a storm is approaching. Do you have a “safe room” in your house? Make sure you have a three-month supply of the medications you need. Stock containers of water and non-perishable foods to last at least one week. It is also wise to keep cash on hand. These measures are cheap insurance to help you survive a threatening storm.

Sidewalk improvementsWe have now widened another

portion of our sidewalk system along an easement that gets a lot of use. The path between Somerset and Villa Majorca off Everwood Run was widened all the way to the back of Willow Links. The widened pathway then goes between Willow Links and

Village Lakes all the way to the shopping village. Thanks to Somerset, Villa Majorca, Wedgewood Lake, Chambery, Sandleheath, Village Lake, and Willow Links for their patience during construction.

Beware of email and phone scamsFrequently, I receive emails

describing large amounts of money, that someone needs to get into the United States from another country. The message goes on to say that if I “…help get these funds into the country, [I] will receive a large percentage of the funds.” All I have to do is give them my home address.

Don’t be fooled—never give out any personal information or money to anyone you don’t know.

I spoke to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department about these scams, and they are very much aware of these types of scam artists. The Sheriff asks that you do not fax or send copies of these messages to the Department. They also asked me to remind you not to accept collect calls from correctional facilities or persons you do not know and, especially, do not let unknown persons inside your home to use your phone for any reason.

Door-to-door solicitationsWe have had a rash of solicitors

lately, probably because of the economy and the time of year. Beware of strangers; don’t let them inside your home. Call our Safety Patrol at 809-0084 (without the solicitors’ knowledge if possible).

Garage doorsWe have had quite a few calls

regarding open garage doors at night. Open garage doors present a safety hazard to residents and provide an opportunity for theft. Our Safety Patrol will leave a courtesy notice—not a violation notice—as a reminder to those who have not closed their doors.

Tree trimmingOnce again, it is time for

the trees to begin growing faster than they do in the winter. If your trees are overhanging roads, power poles, streets lights, or sidewalks, please have them trimmed. Overhanging trees can be dangerous and a liability. As a property owner, you are responsible for the landscaping and lawn to the edge of pavement—this includes overhanging tree limbs. We appreciate your cooperation.

Blowing grass clippingsPlease ask your lawn service

to blow the clippings back on your lawn or grounds. They should not be blown into storm sewers or into the street. The clippings are good for the lawn in many ways; they contain the chemicals you put on your grass to make it beautiful. Thank you again for your cooperation.

March Assembly Meeting Follow Up

Sarasota County Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates weighs in with answers to Florida questions

Dear Mr. Grubb & Mr. Sawyer,

Please accept my thanks for the opportunity to speak at the Assembly of Property Owners. It was a pleasure to meet your residents. There were several questions which required some research. Would one of you be so kind as to share the answers with the group?

Q. What is the name of the last county to be created in Florida?

A. The last county created was Gilchrist County on December 4, 1925.

Q. When statehood was announced in 1845, what was the make-up of Florida’s population?

A. According to The Florida Handbook (2007 edition), the total population was half White and half African American and Native Indian.

Q, Are there any other states that elect the Superintendent of Schools?

A. In addition to Florida, Superintendents may be elected in two other states: Alabama and Mississippi.

Again, it was a pleasure to speak to your members. If you or any of your neighbors have further questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely, Barbara Ford-Coates

In March, The Meadows was fortunate to have Sara-sota County Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates speak at the March 19 Assembly of Property Owners meeting.

Ms. Ford-Coates explained the duties of her office and fielded questions from the audience.

During the question and answer portion of the meet-ing, residents asked a number of state-related questions that Ms. Ford-Coates promised to research and get back with The Meadows.

She responded in a let-ter on March 27 to Assembly Chairman Dr. Bill Grubb and President Anthony Sawyer.

The information she provided may add a bit of interesting facts to your knowledge of “Florida Trivia.”

Emergency Preparedness Committee

Emergency help needed to cover many areas!By Harry Shannon, M.D.—Chairman

It is with a sense of trepidation that I assume the Chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee. Charlie Loeffler and Ray Stemitz have done a superb job and leave big shoes to fill. I am honored and gratified that they have agreed to stay and give me the benefit of their knowledge and contacts. I also appreciate the help and support of the area leaders.

Charlie has done such a good job of keeping the hurricanes away for the past few years that I fear we have become complacent in our attitudes—“It can’t happen here.” The short power failure last month should remind us—“Yes, it can!”

We have a capable group of willing volunteers on our committee, but we are woefully under-represented in some areas. Unfortunately, we have very few volunteers from private homeowners. These are people who will be here during the hurricane season and, consequently, may need the most help. So. in reference to Charlie’s slogan “DON’T BE SCARED, BE PREPARED,” I

recommend, “BE A LITTLE SCARED SO WE WILL BE PREPARED.”

The committee needs

everyone’s help and input. If you are willing and able, please call the MCA office with your name and phone number. You’re invited to the Emergency Preparedness Meeting at the MCA, May 1, 1:0 pm.

Thanks for considering a volunteer role in our Emergency Preparedness program—we appreciate your help!

Chandlers’ ChatterSome views from the Forde

By Ingrid Dean…Hail, bounteous May,

that doth inspire Mirth, and youth, and warm desire: Woods and groves

are of thy dressing. Hill and dale doth boast thy blessing.

—John Milton

The end of the school year is here… Dee Tedrow’s granddaughter,

Alice Ryskamp, graduates from Hope College in Michigan with a major in biology.

Doris and Larry Kelly’s granddaughter, Christi, says farewell to Oklahoma Baptist University and, joined by her family, announces her engagement.

Geet and Mel Jacobson are doing double graduations! Granddaughter Amanda and grand-son Blake, celebrate high school

commencement—both are looking forward to attending college next fall.

Betty and Herb Weiner, are strong believers in doing things together—their birthdays are even on the same date. (Herb is older, though!) Two of their daughters came to visit and help them celebrate.

Larry Karmen was greeted by family and friends who managed to keep his 75th birthday party a surprise—it even surprised Florine!

Louise Skirven awaits arrival of daughter Sandi from New Jersey, a computer whizz, I’m told.

Dr. Phyllis Stephenson is off to Costa Rica. (She seldom stays put!) Going with her are sons Michael (Geeta) and Steve (Wendy) and daughter Dr. Katherine with hubby Jason from Michigan. What a fun trip!

From the sports enthusiasts, we hear that neighbor Steve Goff won the Meadows Men’s Doubles Championship Tennis Tourney. It was a tough draw, and he and his partner were very strong!

The Chandlers Forde participants who entered the “Bye Bye Birdie” Golf Tourney all had a grand time.

Joan and Charles Carlson have had “round-robin” visits from their family. Daughters, Leslie and Kari, with their friend Janice, and son Jim and wife Jill, with their friends Susan and Dennis from Nova Scotia—all enjoyed Sarasota.

But, the family “get-togethers” did not stop the Carlsons from helping with the Canada Tournament. There were 144 golfers and 160 for dinner! “Well done,” praise Bob and Faye Galpin, who also enjoyed playing in the tournament. They will chair the Canada Tournament in 2009.

Tom Schalk insisted that the fish were just not biting! Not to worry—the whole family got together with son Brad, wife Linda, and kids for a turkey dinner. Sounds good!

Continued get-well wishes go to Larry Kelly, Betty M., and Ingrid D.

“Used-to-be neighbors” Marie Matthei and Helen Fauser met for lunch and decided Chandlers Forde is a really good place to form friendships.

As I watered my Dahlberg Daisies in front of the kitchen window, I noticed right in the middle of the crock a totally different plant seemed to be thriving. Umhum, it was an interloper—a rogue tomato plant. Now how did that get there… TOM?

In celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, “Happy Cinco de Mayo”

And, to moms everywhere, with all our love… “Happy Mothers Day!”

Under our newly elected President, Bob Anderson, Sandleheath has been enjoying a major overhaul and general cleanup. Our oak trees have finally stopped shedding, the palms and bushes are trimmed, and we are anxiously awaiting delivery of some sod to fill in where necessary on the lawns.

Sandleheath SagaShrubs are thinning out for summer—

and so are Sandleheath residentsBy Joan Pabian

Along with the thinning of the shrubbery, our population is also depleting as folks head to their summer destinations.

Our monthly pool parties, under the leadership of Social Chair Susan Anderson, have been a huge success. We come armed with platefuls of goodies to share as well as the beverage of choice and enjoy socializing with neighbors and friends.

I am happy to report that those who have been on the “sick-call list” all seem to be doing well.

As the Pabians get their motor home ready to roll west, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe summer. So, until the fall…

The Scene From

Chatsworth Greene…no slowing down here

As seen by Ginny Cardozo and Jane Jassin

An update on the re-roofing project highlighted our Annual Meeting with kudos going to Leigh Quinn, Fred Jensen, and Al Brown for all their hard work (and it’s not over yet of course).

Congratulations to Don Dillman, who has joined the Board of Directors, and to his wife, Marilyn, who replaces Barbara Schaal as Annette Dammicci’s co-chair of the Social Committee. Watch the bulletin board for news of future festivities arranged by these creative gals.

A warm welcome to Elinor Cohen’s daughter Judy and son-in-law Harold Carrick from Falkland, Scotland, who are now the owners of Elinor’s villa. Elinor is at the Sara Bay Club now, but we’re glad she’ll maintain her connection with us.In other neighborhood news…

The Sandlemans are celebrating the engagement of son “JJ” and the transfer to Virginia of daughter Joy, son-in-law John, and granddaughter Alexis. John is in the U.S. Coast Guard and was based in New York, so Virginia is a “little closer” to Florida.

The Webers, the Detwilers, and the Pathes were among those enjoying visits from family recently. Luckily, Vic Pathe received his Pacemaker in time to keep up with the grandchildren and is doing well.

The Morrises did some local traveling recently, visiting friends from Italy who were vacationing on Florida’s east coast. The Greenbergs went a bit further away on a river cruise from the Netherlands to Belgium—a lovely time to be there, so Bert and Audrey enjoyed every moment.

And, finally, a new poem from our own poet-laureate, Jane Jassin:

There’s still plenty to keep us active in the summertime. To be

bored would be a crime. We can eat out at a bargain price, and getting a good T-time is nice. Plus traffic isn’t as frustrating; there’s still theatre and the Music Festival,

both with high ratings. But home-steaders do get away too, visiting

many places old and new.

Thanks Jane!

Hi From

Hampstead HeathVisitors come and go as season winds down

and summer approaches By Ethel Schueckler

Laura Pasquarelli hosted a delicious luncheon in March, right after St. Patrick’s Day, at the University Club. Neighbors who attended included Marie Simpson with her sister Toni, Carol Oltchick, Pat Torres, Jean Premo with daughter Mary Pat, Doris Mayer, Marianne Younger, Joan Stemmerman, Mary McGarvey, Helen Campbell with sister Dorothy, and Ethel Schueckler. Ethel volunteered to arrange the next luncheon at The Meadows Country Club.

Thanks for Jill’s crib; I [Ethel] will use it again for granddaughter Ruby Lou, who is coming home from Vietnam with Mommy Julie Vander Burg. Husband Richard was transferred to Norfolk, Virginia. I haven’t child-proofed a house in a long time for a baby to crawl around.

Jean and John Premo had a visit from daughter Mary Pat and her two sons. Leaving the rest of her kids home made a very nice vacation for Mary Pat, who has 14 children.

Faith Wiss had a visit from her son and family from Raleigh Durham, along with their baby and three-year old. Faith said they covered all the “tourist traps”… I mean interesting locations.

Marianne and Chuck Younger kept two grandchildren one week and another two the following week. They were delighted to have

them visit because they do not see their grandchildren that often. “We look forward to seeing them, enjoy them while they are here, hate to see them go, but glad to have our condo back to normal when they leave,” they said.

Easter brought many bunnies; I [Ethel] had her medical pair, Amy and Kevin Rosteing with their two teenagers, Monique and Andre, who have been coming to visit since they were babies. Now they tower over me.

In March, we elected officers for 2008 at the annual meeting—President Linda Seashore Larsen, Vice President Inger Gould, Secretary Cody Harrison, Treasurer Marge Suarez, and Social Director Ethel Schueckler. We also thank Stan Mokrzynski for his excellent service as pool super.

We had a pool party on April 16 that we will tell you all about in the June issue. We also had a luncheon. Our “Nothing Party” was on March 17 at Don and June Junker’s condo.

We look forward to new trellises and a fresh paint job this summer so the snowbirds will see it when they return—and, we hope they all have a very pleasant summer.

BIG SALES!

Sarasota Quality Floors(Over 10 Years of Experience)

“Where your dreamscome first!”

Given the scope and complexity of making our community the place you want to reside in is not easy. It takes work, and we never seem to take enough time to thank those who are responsible. The following article was submitted by our President, John McLaughlin:

First, I want to thank the Board of Directors for voting me President of the Board. The Board is experienced and still enthusiastic about keeping and improving the lifestyle of people in Longwater Chase. Austin Flint is the new Vice President, John Pizzo takes over the job of Treasurer, Mary Lou Klemm is our new Secretary, and Marsha McElroy is Member-at-Large. We sincerely appreciate the long and selfless service of Past-President Virginia Steward. And, we deeply regret that Craig Miller left the Board; he does hope to come back as a renter.

Secondly, we’ve enjoyed a resurgence of volunteers, with people approaching us asking what they can do to help. That’s exciting! I remain your humble servant, John McLaughlin.

We now have a Website for the convenience of our residents. They can access information about our community and about activities, business, and general issues.

We had an array of visitors and gaiety this past month—Marsha and Eddie’s adorable “Eddie the Younger,” Jenna Beth, Pat and Cal’s beautiful and lovely granddaughter, Bruce and Gerry’s son David and his wife Tara, Earlene’s sister and brother-in-law, Janice’s sister, Cynthia and Ambrose, and Mary Lou’s life-long friend from Michigan, to name a few.

We also welcomed back Sondra and Tom, Nancy and Frank, Priscilla and Tom, and bid farewell to other loved ones leaving after Easter.

A lunch at the Bijou Cafe was jolly good fun, thanks to Judy and Marsha. We all mingled with friends and had delicious cuisine to boot. A Bon Appetite affair!

Joyce and Austin are taking one of my dream trips. They have been walking and preparing for weeks to enjoy the beauty and history of the Galapagos and Machu Picchu as well as other sites. I can’t wait to relive their journey with them when they return.

It is with a very heavy heart that we offer condolences and sympathy to Walter on the death of his wife Sandy. She was fun, caring, energetic, and courageous. She will be forever missed.

Till we meet again…

Robert Henry and William Tidmore of Tidmore-Henry & Associates are the developers for Wood Ridge, The Meadows newest development, located across from The Meadows Country Club on Trebor Lane and Longmeadow Drive. The development, which received its final approval last October, will offer high-end individual homes rounding out and expanding the variety of homes offered in The Meadows.

Tidmore-Henry marketing began in January after the model was furnished. The model has received a lot of media attention and positive response. The homes are custom-built and can be designed for individual life-style needs and price points. They also come with zero maintenance.

Wood Ridge’s zero lot line concept creates a spacious

open feeling and incorporates courtyard design features that provide maximum privacy in what Tidmore-Henry refer to as Riviera-inspired Mediterranean architecture—perfectly suited for Florida. Mature oak trees, a variety of palm trees and tropical landscape, and privacy bearns embellish the architecture and give added, individual home privacy.

There are six golf course lots and three canal lots. The lots may

be purchased separately and have been recently reduced, now starting at $290,000.00. One lot has sold.

All lots are ready to build on with utilities, including natural gas, already in place. Wood Ridge is the only development in The Meadows featuring natural gas.

For more information or to make an appointment, call 941-954-4454.

Meadows Real EstateHousing market is stronger in The Meadows

than other areas of SarasotaBy Marilyn Maleckas—Hunt Real Estate ERA

The Meadoword asked Meadows’ resident and real estate agent, Marilyn Maleckas, to share her views on The Meadows’ market—what’s selling, who’s buying, and what buyers are looking for.

The real estate market is correcting itself with prices more in line with those of 2002/200. It puts the current situation in an historic buyer’s market.

Of The Meadows’ 750 single-family homes, 1 are on the market. This is a remarkably low inventory! As of 4/15/2008, 11 homes have closed and an additional six homes have gone under contract for later closing. This is no small feat for the first quarter of 2008, given today’s perceived market conditions.*

The Meadows’ condominium market in is also experiencing increased activity. Currently, 110 condominiums of the 2800 in The Meadows are on the market. Year-to-date shows that 24 condos closed and 15 are under contract. A total of 9 condos are scheduled to change hands within three-plus months.*

A recent Villas of Papillon condo went under contract in just 12 days; the buyer had looked at more than 60 properties in Sarasota, and finally bought in The Meadows. A recent Hadfield Greene open house brought in 42 prospective buyers.

Homes and Condominiums that have sold have at least two of the four most desirable attributes:

Competitive pricingUpdated kitchens and bathsLake-front locationGolf-front locationBuyers seem to feel that NOW

is the time to buy. Many have felt priced out of the market in past years when faced with the total cost of ownership—condominium fee and association fees, taxes, and insurance.

A common theme resonates—security, good value, and proximity to downtown and I-75.

Meadows’ buyers are entering a truly beautiful lifestyle. What attracts them is the beauty of the community, the mature and superbly maintained landscape, the walking/bicycling/nature trails, activities and lectures sponsored by the MCA, serene lakes and gardens, and the many activities and amenities of The Meadows Country Club. As one new owner recently said, “The Meadows, like Sarasota, is the premier site of Living Life to its Fullest.”* Statistics supplied by the Sarasota Association of Realtors

“Godzilla”—in Florida?Exotic Iguana and Nile Monitor lizards endanger native habitats

By Mary Jo Gord—Editor

Lizards are abundant in the state, but you typically wouldn’t expect to find one much more than five of six inches. But, hold on… what about stumbling across a two-foot—or longer—reptile resembling some prehistoric dinosaur?

In Mexico, maybe, but giant lizards have never called Florida home until recent years when pet owners began releasing them into the wild.

Sarasota began removing exotic lizards in 2004 when a pair of iguanas surfaced in Lemon Bay Park. According to County officials, the latest rash of black spiny-tailed iguanas most likely migrated from Charlotte and Lee counties—where Gasparilla Island is home to literally thousands of the invasive animals—and have appeared as far north as Siesta Key.

Iguanas occupy the burrows that were once homes to Gopher Tortoises and feast on their eggs as well as eggs of other endangered

turtles and birds. Two-foot iguanas have surprised visitors to Venice area parks—the average size iguana is from four to six feet.

Nile Monitors can grow to as much as seven feet. Quoted in the Herald-Tribune, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation Supervisor Jerris Foote said, “They’re agressive, and they’ll basically eat anything that fits in their mouth[s].” They have been known to eat small alligators.

Lee County trapped about half the 10,000 that occupied Boca Grande last year—to the tune of $100,000. Sarasota is taking steps to manage the reptiles while their numbers are still low in the county.

Iguanas are quick and hard to catch. Foote recommends having expert trappers remove exotic

lizards. But, rest easy, no exotic lizards have moved into The Meadows!

Eugene (Gene) Bowen is a fifth generation Floridian with a gentle Southern accent not often heard in Florida today. Both of his great-grandfathers fought in the Civil War, one for the Confederacy and one for the Union. Vietnam was a place this Florida boy could only imagine.

After high school in Panama City, Gene traveled around the South with some friends and then attended Florida State. Leaving college, he was immediately drafted in 1967 and assigned to Ft. Benning, Georgia, for basic training. President Lyndon Johnson visited Ft. Benning, and Gene met him. Gene was an excellent shot and rated expert with his M-14 rifle. Lots of the good old Southern boys had become proficient marksmen from all the squirrel hunting they had done. Because he did so well at basic training, Gene was one of the few enlistees invited to attend Officers Candidate School. But he had heard that the officers were getting killed first in Vietnam, and he decided to stick with the enlisted men.

Gene was then sent to Ft. McCord in Washington, where he began the long flight to Vietnam in March 1968. Gene at 2 was older than many of the draftees. They had all seen the body bags on TV and the riots on the college campuses; they were probably all frightened of what would await them. Gene remembers the flight as if it were yesterday. They stopped in Honolulu, Wake Island, and the Philippines before they landed in Cam Ranh Bay.

There they received their supplies and orientation. They learned never to accept a free soda from anyone—it could be poisoned. They learned that the Viet Cong often hid grenades on small children. They were warned that women could be dangerous spies. They were told about malaria and other diseases and given iodine

tablets for their drinking water. PFC Bowen was assigned to B

Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Infantry of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Light infantry meant they had no tanks, only light weapons such as rifles, grenades, and mortars. B Company was sent

to the I Corps, the northern sector of South Vietnam. Their mission was to search for and destroy the enemy, its supplies and its communication. The battle action could come at any time, day or night. The terrain was filled with booby traps and land mines. The heat and humidity were oppressive. Tigers roamed at night. Blood-sucking leeches would attach themselves to the soldiers as they crossed rivers, and constant wet feet caused jungle rot and infections.

Gene was quickly in the middle of the Battle of Kham Duc, which

he calls “the biggest battle you never heard of.” The U.S. Special Forces had a camp there that was used as an intelligence gathering post. The other U.S. camps in the northern portion of South Vietnam had already been overrun by the NVA (North Vietnamese

Army) and the Viet Cong. General Westmoreland wanted Kham Duc held. There were 1700 troops there, mostly U.S. and South Viet Nam, and a few Australians. By May 10, the camp was surrounded by about 7000 NVA troops and the battle was raging. Gene had been positioned outside the wired perimeter and spent two nights there, surrounded by shelling. It was, he said, a “scary, scary place.” The terrain was flat and hard. It was impossible to dig a foxhole or trench, and there was no place to take cover. There were some bunkers in the middle of the camp,

but not near where Gene was.May 12 was Mother’s Day. All

of the men knew this and thought how awful it would be to die on Mother’s Day. Westmoreland gave the order to evacuate. Gene made it back to the bunkers. The camp was also full of civilians—the wives and children of many of the South Vietnamese soldiers. The Air Force sent planes and helicopters for the evacuation. Under heavy bombardment, a C-10 managed to land and was swarmed by 150 civilians. It was so over-loaded that it was barely able to take off. As it just cleared the trees, it was shot down and all aboard perished. The South Vietnamese solders watched their families die. About the same time, Gene saw one of his friends lose both hands and his platoon leader was killed by fire. Gene remembers them well, knows their names, thinks of them often.

More transport planes and helicopters were trying to land. Some succeeded; some were shot down. Our men couldn’t see where the enemy fire was coming from as it was above them. Gene climbed a bunker so that he could see the enemy guns, and he successfully directed the counter mortar fire which was able to destroy the gun position that was shooting down our planes. Gene was awarded the Bronze Star for these “exceptionally valorous actions.” The Bronze Star is the fourth highest military award.

After the evacuation was complete, three soldiers had been left behind. Air Force Lt. Colonel Joe M. Jackson was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his personal actions in returning and rescuing those men in his C-12. Seventy-four Americans were killed or were MIA and 141 were wounded. South Vietnamese killed and wounded totaled 81, including the civilians. Ten aircraft were destroyed. Figures are not

Best KeptMaxine Borchers—Committee Chairwoman

Best Kept Committee member Mary Garvey installs the “Best Kept” sign at the entrance of Woodmans Chart, where it will remain for a month. Woodmans Chart received the recognition for the improvement of their entrance. The association installed new landscaping and a new entrance sign. The association also received $50 to help with the continued good maintenance and appearance of their entrance.

The “Best Kept Award for Individual Homes” in the month of April went to Marilyn Maleckas (right) of 2501 Pinebrook Hollow. Committee member Don Cloud (left) presents her with a gift of a whitewashed stone pot of bromeliads in full bloom.

It was a good year…The “Best Kept” season

came to an end in April when Committee members handed out two awards.

Marilyn Maleckas of 2501 Pinebrook received the honor of “Best Kept Award for Individual Homes,” and The Woodmans Chart Homeowners Association received the “Best Kept Association Entrance Award.”

Over the winter months, many, many homeowners and condo associations worked hard to get their lawns and entrances looking like winners—and they are all winners because of their invested efforts in helping to keep The Meadows the beautiful community that it is.

We look forward to returning next year and finding more award-winning properties to recognize with high praise.

Thank you all for your hard work!—Maxine

available for enemy losses. By late afternoon on May 12, North Vietnam had taken over Kham Duc.

B Company was taken to the large base camp at Chu Lai for reassignment. Later, Gene’s commanding officer knew Gene had been to college and he asked him if he could type. The company clerk was going home and a replacement was needed; Gene got the job. He spent the rest of his tour writing the casualty and other reports, doing the paperwork, and delivering the mail at Chu Lai. Gene had served bravely and honorably in combat, but he was now glad for the safer job.

Gene had risen to the position of Specialist 5. He had been awarded two Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medals and Service Medals, two overseas bars, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Army Commendation Medal.

In Vietnam, Gene, a tall 245-pound man, weighed only 155 pounds. He had not been wounded, but he had been hospitalized with a serious kidney infection. He had not once talked to his family back in Florida. As a recruit, he had been paid $88.00 per month, in Vietnam only a little more. On the plus side, Gene had two enjoyable R & Rs in Australia and in Penang, Malaysia.

Back home, Gene faced some hostility from the anti-war protestors, but his family and friends were supportive. He says, “I was proud to serve the nation I love.” Like so many of our Vietnam vets, Gene doubts the wisdom of that war and has serious concerns about the current war in Iraq. “America should be trying to make more friends in the world, not enemies,” he adds. In 2005, Gene attended a Kham Doc reunion in Washington, DC. Two of the Australian soldiers came all the way to the reunion. Gene was not surprised they would come. Vietnam was, he says “an all encompassing experience—it affects your whole life.”

Gene returned to college on the GI Bill, earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in history. After a career with the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor (both in Sarasota), Gene retired to The Meadows. He and his wife, Jackie, divide their time between The Meadows and Beach Mt., North Carolina, where they enjoy seeing snow in the winter. Gene had never really intended to talk publicly about his war experiences, but, after I contacted him, he decided that it might be good for people to know what it was really like for our troops in Vietnam. His recollections are vivid and haunting.

Wrapping up the season and looking aheadBy Bill Kaiser—Coordinator

We had another successful, enjoyable Roadrunner trip in early April. Seventy-six of us went on our chartered motor coaches to St. Petersburg to enjoy the “Treasures of the Vatican” at The Florida International Museum.

Following our tour there, the motor coach took us to The Renaissance Vinoy Resort for our sit-down lunch—all inclusive with our trip.

About two o’clock, we went to the Dali Museum in St. Pete for a docent-conducted tour of that fascinating exhibit. This time, they showed some of the silent movies that Dali directed—something we’ve never seen before.

’Twas a good day, and everyone appeared to enjoy the tours and lunch.

On the way back to The Meadows, numerous napping patrons missed seeing the dolphins in Tampa Bay and the many beautiful hot-air balloons. What a treat! (Unfortunately, most of the awake patrons missed it too.)

Another April trip, another artist…

Sharon’s Restaurant was purchased by Janet Marien, sons Shawn and Robert, and daughter-in-law Rin in April from previous owner Sharon Switzer. Shawn and Robert will be heading up the kitchen. “Both are good cooks and enjoy trying new things,” says Janet. “We are open to hearing from our patrons about dishes they would like to have us offer.”

Rin, an excellent cook, comes from Thailand and will be introducing Thai specials every Wednesday. She has already changed the mini-egg roll appetizers on the menu to her own specialty, fresh spring rolls.

Janet says they plan to continue with the current menu as well as add some new items and daily off-menu specials.

She will be seeking feedback from the customers about additions or changes they would like to see on the menu and is also interested in hearing about wine preferences to enhance the bar.

A new feature at Sharon’s is the complementary Wi-Fi wireless Internet access, already connected, for customers who like to bring their work with them.

“We will keep the music playing every Friday night as long as there is an audience to support it during the summer months,” Janet

Sharon’s will continue to be the meeting place for clubs and organizations. Janet says they plan to cater to banquets, graduation parties, anniversary celebrations…”Whatever your banquet needs are,

Your Pets’ Healthy HeartsSummer puts pets at risk for Heartworm

By David T. Smith, DVM—Sarasota Veterinary Center

Winter has passed, and the current warm weather will soon turn to hot times. As you plan for outdoor activities and get out the insect repellent to protect your skin, remember that pets need preventative measures as well to protect them from mosquitoes. Mosquito bites can infect dogs and cats with heartworms. And, unfortunately, it only takes one infected mosquito bite to transmit the disease to your dog or cat.

Heartworm disease causes serious health problems and may eventually lead to heart failure and death. In fact, sudden death may be the first and only sign of heartworm infection in cats.

Some people think indoor cats are not at risk, but mosquitoes can, and often do, get indoors. In studies performed on cats, 55% of the cats that tested positive were classified as living “strictly or mostly indoors” by their owners.

If your pet becomes infected with heartworms, it takes approximately six months for the adult worms to develop in the heart, and then the problems start to progress.

The disease is completely preventable. All you need to do is give your pet a preventative one-day every month. Veterinarians recommend once yearly testing for this deadly disease, which is treatable in dogs. There is no

approved treatment for cats, but giving them a once-a-month preventative is convenient and reliable.

Many cats have unnoticeable respiratory complications related to heartworms that shorten their lives. Heartworm preventatives not only protect against this complication, but also protect pets from other parasites, including hookworms and roundworms.

Living in Florida, we have to deal with a mosquito population that never goes away. Standing water is a natural breeding ground for mosquitoes, and all those rain puddles, ponds, lakes, and canals produce billions of mosquitoes every year.

But, you can fight back and protect your pet by using a monthly preventative. Manufacturers of the safest products offer a 100% guarantee if you buy the product through your veterinarian, which is the only approved source to assure that you do not get a counterfeit or tampered product. Talk to your veterinarian to find out which preventative is best for your pet.

Dr. David T. Smith has been a veterinarian in Florida for 19 years. His practice, the Sarasota Veterinary Center, is located on Cattlemen Road south of Bee Ridge Road next to the Burlington Coat Factory.

This 1948 RKO film, directed by George Stevens, stars Irene Dunne, Barbara BelGeddes, Oscar Homolka, Philip Dorn, Cedric Hardwicke, Edgar Bergen, Rudy Valee, Barbara O’Neil, Ellen Corby, and Florence Bates. The screenplay by DeWitt Bodeen is based on the play by John VanDruten and the Kathryn Forbes’ book of memoirs, Mama’s Bank Account.

The nostalgic film is based on family life in San Francisco, circa 1910, and derived from the memoirs of Author Kathryn Forbes about growing up with her Norwegian immigrant family—a charming and beautifully realized, rewarding film dedicated to all mothers.

Off-Screen:The film was scheduled to

play at Radio City Music Hall in New York City when an argument erupted about eliminating more than ten minutes from the film to accommodate the length of the

stage show. Studio executives refused, and the film was not shown at the Music Hall.

Mama, a television series based on the story turned up in 1956 with Peggy Wood as “Mama.” It ran for eight years.

Richard Rodgers’ musical adaptation had a modest run on Broadway in 1979.

The Snow Birds are returning to the north and other places in the country, and the books are returning to the Library. Thank you, everyone, who brought our books back for others to enjoy over the summer.

We’ve also gotten a lot of new, interesting books donated to the Library—the shelves are getting full! We will have a good “reading season” ahead of us next fall.

For those of you staying in The Meadows during the summer months, the Library will be open all summer during regular hours. We hope you will use it often!

As always, we welcome your donations. To help us keep our book inventory fresh, please limit your fiction to books with copyright dates no earlier than 2000.

If you have books to donate that do not meet our guidelines, Goodwill Industries is always accepting books.
