TheLincoLn Log A Message From the President

2

President Hutchinson

LincoLn coLLege and the economy

“...the future of the institution is bright and we are working hard to strike that delicate balance between fiscal conservatism and progressive program development.”

ne of my most frequently asked questions is, “how is the College faring in these difficult economic times?” I suspect that many of our alumni and friends who

read The Log have the same question. So permit me to give all of you a brief update. To be honest, it is a struggle right now. As with most private colleges and universities, Lincoln has hit the “trifecta”: (1) some loss of student tuition because families cannot afford the cost of higher education, (2) reduction in endowment income, and (3) a slowing of annual fund support. This has resulted in some temporary belt-tightening measures in the form of expenditure reductions, temporary reductions in the work week for some employees, and health-insurance cost sharing for others. All of the senior officers of the institution have accepted a 19% salary reduction. To avoid financial hardship for employees earning lower salaries, those staff persons will be protected from the temporary reductions in the work week. These measures are projected to continue through the end of the current fiscal year – June 30, 2009.

There are no reductions in academic programs, student services, or extracurricular activities. Our highest priorities at this time have been to maintain academic programs and preserve jobs.

Despite these measures, the College is moving forward on a number of very exciting fronts. Our Lincoln Center construction is accelerating now that much of the winter weather is behind us. We are anticipating completion of the project in November of this year and excitement is mounting on the campus. At Lincoln College – Normal we are about to open

O a new Center for Adult Learning that will house our Accelerated Bridge to Education (ABE) program, customized learning services, and certificate programming. The ribbon cutting is on April 7. It should be noted that the ABE program, which provides accelerated degree completion opportunities for adult students began in October, 2007, with 16 students and now has 153. It continues to grow by leaps and bounds. A new Bachelor of Arts in Theatre has been approved by the accreditation agency and we are now accepting students for Fall Semester, 2009.

So, despite some cost-cutting measures in the short run, the future of the institution is bright and we are working hard to strike that delicate balance between fiscal conservatism and progressive program development. By the way, if you can help, we could certainly use some assistance with our annual fund program. All contributions at this time are even more deeply appreciated.

In this issue of The Log, Lincoln College proudly presents its “Honor Roll,” a listing of those generous alumni, employees, and friends who give to this institution out of the goodness of their hearts. No private institution of higher learning can long survive, especially in these hard economic times, without the financial support of those who have the means to help. Lincoln College is no exception. I cannot tell you how deeply we appreciate the support of all of you who have given. Listing your name in the “Honor Roll” is a very small thanks for what you have done but please know that we and the students who attend because of your generosity thank you for your support.

This year’s Fine Arts department offerings include ten performance groups including the newly formed Gospel Choir, Improv Team, and African Percussion Ensemble. Students have been busy building, rehearsing and performing. The season began with a combined fine arts effort to mount Little Shop of Horrors.

A new Bachelor of Arts in Theatre will be offered beginning Fall 2009. Retired theatre professor Dan McLaughlin laid the groundwork for the theatre degree and after many years of planning, the college will offer its first fine arts four-year degree. The program will continue to provide students with an opportunity to perform in over five productions annually as well as get real-life experience in internships and senior projects.

Lincoln College welcomed Diane Dietz as to the faculty as our vocal instructor. Diane hails from the St. Louis area and has performed professionally throughout the Midwest and in Europe. Diane teaches music and leads the chorale, show choir, chamber singers, and gospel choir.

Fine Arts students have been busy serving the community and spreading their crafts with school children and community groups throughout Central Illinois. Fine arts students helped a local boy scout pack earn their Showmen badge, performed for multiple Christmas parties, volunteered at the local YMCA and through the local schools, and have been active in providing performance for local worship ceremonies. Fine Arts chair Chris Gray remarks that the service learning the students have participated “is an excellent application of the classroom theory. The students get to organize, practice, and perform all over. I am very proud of how they have represented the college.”

wenty years ago I graduated early from Lincoln Community

High School, and five days later I began my journey at Lincoln College. At the time, my mom Janet Overton worked as President Nutt’s secretary, and before that she worked in various departments at Lincoln College. She filled out the necessary paperwork and my

schedule to allow for an easy transition into college life. However, we still laugh because she selected an algebra class with Jan Bowers for 8:00 a.m.

During my first weekend at LC, my childhood friend Amy Madigan called to see if I wanted to go to a Lincoln College basketball game. The game proved uneventful, but the walk over to Carroll dormitory afterwards changed my life. The story has taken on epic proportions with white lights and halos, but my future husband sat in the lobby watching TV. Perhaps no light glowed around his blond curls, but Paul Hennessy caught my attention. People who know me well simply grin when they hear that I called Paul the next day to ask him on a date. My mom says Paul never had a chance once I got my claws in him.

January 23, 1989 went down in history, and the names Paul and Tara seemed to forever merge into one. Paul would stop by for a visit after his classes when I did filing for Sue Ryan in the financial aid office or later when I worked with Linda Baker in the bookstore. Now flash-forward eleven years… Paul and I are married with two kids and a mortgage, and I just finished my bachelor’s degree. I was looking for a way to help out financially because I have always been a stay-at-home mom who at times home schooled her kids, but I decided to apply at Lincoln College as a tutor. I

worked there for five years under the direction of Jean Hall, until Jeris (Nutt) Livengood approached me to teach her English classes during her maternity leave. I jumped at the opportunity, and when Jeris came back to work she and Judy Cortelloni encouraged me to start my master’s degree. During this time, I taught a couple of classes at Lincoln College. I finished this past December with a master’s degree in writing and editing, and this semester I am teaching four classes at Lincoln College. Paul and I recently took a trip to celebrate my educational accomplishments and also twenty years together.

The canvas at Lincoln College has changed and people have come and gone over the years, but some of the long-timers are still around. I can still stop by the provost’s office and chat with Joyce Geary and Tina (Smith) Nutt. Linda Baker now works in the maintenance department, and she always makes me laugh. Finally, I can still stand outside various buildings on the Lincoln College campus and help to solve the world’s problems while Steve Snodgrass smokes his cigarette and encourages my outrageous claims. Woven together, these are just some of the people who make up the fabric of Lincoln College.

So here I am twenty years later. My husband tells everyone that before he met me, “He had hopes, hair, and dreams.” But where many couples fall to the wayside, we are holding strong, even with two teenagers in the house. Our journey began twenty years ago at Lincoln College, and Lincoln College still remains a big part of my life.

but about people and growing up and accepting difference.” Erik would love to hear from classmates at [email protected]. A passion for politics has taken Adam Febre (’09) from Lincoln to Washington. “When I traveled with Congressman

Aaron Schock on his bus tour last fall, I instantly knew I wanted to work for him in Washington, D.C. Working for the Congressman has helped me realize that improving quality of life by inducing economic growth in our world is now my chief goal,” says Adam. In a typical week Adam spends about 55 hours in the office answering constituent phone calls, directing phone calls

for the office, data entry, organizing Congressional information, going to briefings, giving Capitol tours, and running a plethora of various errands. “I truly love every minute of learning and working in Congressman Schock’s office. I miss everyone in Lincoln very much, and I truly appreciate everything Lincoln College has done for me,” adds Adam.

2009. Veach has been active in the ultimate fighting network since 2006. He has a 10-0 record fighting in smaller shows in the Midwest. One of his bouts was in Canada. He trains at the HIT Squad Gym in Granite City owned and operated by Hillsboro native and Lincoln College Alumni Matt Hughes (‘95), one of the original stars of UFC. Jennifer Story, class of 2002, played ball at Lincoln College for two years before heading to the University of Oklahoma. There she earned degrees in elementary education and criminal justice. She entered the police academy in January 2005. Jennifer is now a police officer in the St. Louis Metropolitan area and was recently awarded the Medal of Valor for her bravery in a gun battle in St. Louis. A fellow police officer was at the mercy of a gunman who was about to pull the trigger when Story arrived on the scene after a distress call had been made. Story opened fire on the suspect immediately and saved Officer White’s life. Only 16 officers in the area — which encompasses all Missouri State Patrols — were awarded the Medal of Valor. Lisa Jo (Allen) Brown, class of 2003, will be married to Dr. Paul Abbo on March 28, 2009. A European honeymoon is planned after the Chicago wedding. Erik Grimestad, class of 2004, graduated with honors from Elmhurst College in 2006 and is working in commercial finance for a large firm in the Northwest Suburbs. He married Ami Kuhn in May, 2008, and plans to complete his MBA. Erik says, “I wouldn’t be where I am without Lincoln College. When I was at LC I felt I was ‘too good’ for the school most of the time, but that wasn’t the case. I learned such an incredible amount, not just about education,

Mrs. Eberle was an active community member in the Cradle Society, Junior league of Evanston, Garden Club of Evanston, and served on

various boards at First Presbyterian Church of Evanston. She enjoyed volunteering at Evanston Hospital and the Junior League Thrift Shop of Evanston. Program Expansion allows more adults in Central Illinois to earn Bachelor’s DegreeLincoln College is pleased to announce its Accelerated Bridge to Education (A.B.E.) bachelor’s degree program is expanding to the Lincoln campus. The program has been available to students at the Lincoln College – Normal campus since 2007. Now, with the program’s expansion to the Lincoln College – Lincoln campus, even more students in Central Illinois will enjoy the flexibility and convenience of earning a bachelor’s degree within the A.B.E. format. Students enrolled in the program can earn up to 27 credit hours in a calendar year by attending one class one night per week for five weeks.

“The A.B.E. program was designed to meet the needs of adult learners. It’s central to everything we do. Expanding it to the Lincoln campus is just another example of how we are truly meeting the needs of adult learners in Central Illinois,” said Pamela Johnston, Associate Dean for the Center for Adult Learning at Lincoln College. For more information about the A.B.E. program e-mail [email protected] or go to www.abe.lincolncollege.edu
