Ft. Lauderdale Chapter SAR Minutes of

The meeting was called to order by ChapterPresident Ted Duay who requested the Officers’Reports.

Treasurer Joe Motes presented the Treasurer’sReport, indicating that the Chapter is doing welland that the 50/50 funding program had met itsgoal. The motion was made to accept theTreasurer’s Report and it was seconded. Themotion was passed with no dissenting vote.

The Minutes of the past Chapter meeting weresubmitted by the Chapter Secretary, William E.Spencer. No corrections were noted to the Minutes.

The floor was passed to Mrs. Opal R. Spencer,Senior President of Swamp Fox Society CAR whoannounced that the society continues to makeprogress in its growth in adding 4 new members fora total of 44. In addition one member, MellissaFreer, has recently graduated from the U.S. Armyboot camp. She also announced that the FloridaState Society CAR’s state project would be theCracker Cattle, a breed that was originally broughtto Florida by the Spanish and later escaped into theFlorida wild. In the time period between escapingand the settling of Florida in the mid 1800’s, thecattle thrived due to their gene-stock that allowedthem to become acclimated to the Florida heat andimmune to insects. When settlers arrived theyfound the cattle running wild and also being raisedby the local Indians, but the settlers who broughtother breeds with them thought the cattle useless.Because of neglect, the Cracker Cattle breed almostbecame extinct. The purpose of CAR’s CrackerCattle program is to help the State of Florida raiseawareness of this breed in an effort to preserve it.

2005 - 2006 ROTC Awards

As the 2006 academic year came to an end, ourChapter has made this another successful year. Inmy conversation with many of the unit CO’s, theyhave expressed how grateful they are for ourinvolvement in their Awards Recognition program.My personal thanks go out to George Dennis, EdSpencer, James Lohmeyer and Ken Jessell whohelped make all these presentations a great success.This year we had 27 ROTC recipients. to Opal Spencer for the CAR Swamp Fox

Society during the May 13th meeting.

Compatriot Joe Motes announced that most of theJROTC Awards have been presented and that thereare a few remaining to be completed. He thenpresented Mrs. Opal Spencer, Senior PresidentSwamp Fox CAR with a check for $200.00 onbehalf of the Fort Lauderdale Chapter SAR.Swamp Fox will use this donation for its historicaland patriotic youth activities.

Vice President Jim Lohmeyer reminded the groupthat one of our speakers, Col Gray was a member ofthe Tuskegee Airmen. He then announced that oneof the airmen had previously passed away.

Compatriot Lohmeyer then reminded the group thatwe will be having a joint meeting with theLighthouse Point DAR and the Swamp Fox CAR atthe Lighthouse Point Yacht Club on December 2,2006 and that spouses are welcome to attend.

President Ted Duay announced that SAR NameTags are still available to order, either magnetic orclip on. To request one, please contact either Ted orDebbie Duay.

Ted then announced that the National Society SARwould be holding its National Congress in Dallas,Texas in July. He then inducted new member,Dusty Dunn into the Fort Lauderdale Chapter SAR.

There being no further business before the Chapter,President Ted Duay introduced the guest speaker,Debbie Duay who presented a talk about otherlineage societies.

Many links exists between lineage societies, but notall societies are easy to join given the stringentdocumentation requirements.

Our revolutionary patriot ancestors made useligible to join the SAR. Several other lineagesocieties have other requirements such as theFlagon and Trencher: Descendants of ColonialTavern Keepers. Though many of our ancestorsfrequented these establishments, few actuallyowned them. Flagon and Trencher is open toanyone who can prove direct descent from anancestor who operated a tavern or inn or had alicense to sell spirituous liquors in any of thethirteen colonies prior to July 4, 1776.

Another society, The Baronial Order of the MagnaCharta, requires that one be a descendant of one oftwenty-five Magna Charta Surety Barons,individuals responsible to insure that King Johnlived up to the requirements set forth in the MagnaCharta, or a descendant of Non-Surety supportersin sympathy with the Magna Charta, descendants ofWilliam III d’Aubigny, Hubert de Burgh, Alan ofGalloway, William Marshall, Sr. and William IVde Warenne.

The Order of Founders and Patriots of America (formen) is the toughest of the bunch due to its directpaternal lineage requirements with only a fewdeviations. The paternal line used must include aFounder ancestor who arrived in one of the thirteencolonies prior to May 13, 1657 as well as anintermediate ancestor in the same line who was aRevolutionary War patriot.

Since SAR requires us to prove linage to patriotancestors, once these links are established, it onlybecomes a matter of establishing the link from thatancestor to an eligible ancestor for one to become amember of other lineage societies.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear Compatriots:

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer!

In July, I had the pleasure of attending the 116thSAR National Congress held in Dallas, Texas.Between compatriots and guests, there were over400 people in attendance. The national RumbaughOrations Contest was truly impressive given thehigh level of students that participated in the event.I attended many of the Congress’ business meetingsand got a taste of how thing are done at the nationallevel. A couple of new members were inductedduring the Congress, including Dr. Henry LouisGates, Jr. who is the Director of African-AmericanResearch at Harvard University. I was familiarwith Dr. Gates from watching his PBSdocumentary on African-American genealogy thataired in February. PBS was there recording theevent and parts of the Congress will air on PBS at afuture date. Next year’s Congress will be held inWilliamsburg, VA and I would encourage everyoneto attend.

There are a number of items of interest that relate toour chapter:

We have a number of new members to induct intoour chapter.

Nominations for new chapter officers for 2007 willoccur in October with elections at our Novembermeeting. If you have an interest in serving ourchapter, please consider running for a position.

Our meeting location, the Flaming Pit, is under newmanagement and has raised the prices of ourluncheons, which will now be $15.00 per person.This is still a bargain given the free parking and freemeeting room that is provided to our chapter.

With this newsletter, you will receive your duesnotice for 2007. Please consider paying this earlyas our chapter receives a rebate from the FloridaSociety SAR if we submit our dues early.

Our chapter has a trust fund of approximately$11,000. The trust fund was set up many years agoand provides income, if needed, to our chapter tofund operating activities.

Please consider contributing to this fund, if you areable, when you send in your dues payment.
