Editorial Comments

Fellow Lions, I would like to welcome you to a

brand new Lionistic Year!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the

District Governor Lion Clement for according

me this opportunity to keep you posted of events

and activities within our District and beyond. I

would also like to extend my hearty thanks to

my predecessor, mentor and friend PLDP Lion

Melusi Lusaba for preparing me for this mis-

sion.

Fellow Lions, the success of this Portfolio de-

pends on your input. I urge you all to share with

the District ALL your activities, challenges and

successes so that through your experiences we

can all achieve our mission as LIONS i.e. TO

SERVE!

I shall endeavor to capture as much of your sto-

ries and I possibly can. Your challenge as a Club

for this year is very simple — I would like your

club to send me a report of JUST 1 activity in 2

months for publication to the Newsletter, if you

can do more than that I appreciate it as a bonus.

ONE ARTICLE IN TWO MONTHS IS ALL

I ASK OF FROM YOUR CLUB!

My job would be quite easy if you could provide

your reports

1) In time (by the 25th of every month)

2) In editable text format e.g. MS Word

3) With good quality pictures

4) With enough detail about the event or pro-

ject or initiative or story

In line with the DG‟s theme, lets show the effi-

ciency in our Leadership through the publica-

tion of our successes in a world of service!

FELLOW LIONS, LET YOUR SERVICE

Bwaila bails out Orphanage

FROM THE DG’s DESK

Dear Fellow Lions, Lady Lions, Leos and friends, I greet you fondly from my country of Malawi, teeming with the Lake

and a new country leadership and a changed flag yet again offering

hope for the future!

With a deep sense of duty, I firstly, congratulate all our new Cabinet

members for accepting the challenge to leading our beloved District

this lionistic year. Secondly, am so grateful to you lions and all our

PDG’s at this defining moment, for the most enthusiastic spirit with

which you have welcomed us at the helm of the District. I have been

so humbled with your individual pledges across the four countries to

support me in achieving our goals.

Iam grateful that I can rely in the coming months on so many talents

and on our great lion leader FDVDG Lion Clever bringing unity to

our team and our enthusiastic SVDG Lion jean. In Busan, South Korea, we just colourfully installed a new Interna-

tional President and 760 new Governors marking officially the begin-

ning of a brand new era this lionistic year around the globe! The event

changed my life. I bring a personal message of goodwill from our new International

President Wayne Madden to you all individually. His theme ‘In a

world of Service’ calls on us to maximize our service impact this year

which connects perfectly with my theme to deliver our service with

‘Leadership Efficiency and Integrity’. Ever since Melvin Jones and colleagues sat in that Lasalle Hotel in

Chicago in 1917 to map out Lions, the flame of service that they lit has

since engulfed the world. But the world is changing everyday and as

lions, we are placed with a set of challenges to ensure the vitality of the

flames in our communities. The heritage of our proud service is in our

hands. Today, our District stands at a crossroads once again. We have taken

over in July, 2012, with our District numbers slipped back to 1191

(59 members less to secure our District status). We must prove all

over again that we can! The good news, fellow lions leaders, is that it is easy to make the

numbers and further increase them because we have the greatest po-

tential in our district if only we stick to the goals I have set before you

through Dedication + preparation + implementation + teamwork = Excellence. Efficiency and Integrity in leadership from club, zone, region to DG

team is critical to this effort.

We are a team that must work in unison whilst fulfilling individual

roles. No one leader or member in our team is more important

than the other. Winston Churchill said” if we open a

quarrel between the present and past, we shall be in

danger of losing the future.’ We are lions to light the candle not to curse the dark-

ness. In my goals statement this year, are modest small steps

but giant leaps for our District not only this year but

beyond . It sums up what I ask of you to turn around

our District, appeals to your pride, holds out responsi-

bility and instills a permanent sense of your duty to Li-

onism and as family.

The old ways will not do. The customary idle debates

and ‘lording over’ attitudes by leaders that drive our

members away must be replaced by quiet attention

to our day- to- day lions roles. The individual club

member is our most important asset and key to our

potential. Each one must be made to feel important. Are we ready???? Are we up to this serious but simple

challenge to raise our District to the greatest

height?? WE ARE!!! So Lions, start your engines as the crowd begins to cheer

in anxious anticipation of the start of the race which shall

need our entire team of 1,191 lions members to reach

our goal of 1,750. To this end, we as your leaders, pledge to bear any bur-

den, to meet any hardship, to support hardworking lead-

ership and to oppose our detractors to ensure the suc-

cess and prosperity of our beloved District. I WELCOME you all fellow Lions to this new Lionis-

tic year 2012-13 of fun & fellowship and ask that you re-

dedicate yourselves in your various service roles as

you HIT THE GROUND RUNNING!

Kindest Regards Clement Michael Kasense Ndala; MJF

The Busan Experience

My Unforgettable Leadership Experience at Busan, South Korea

By DG Lion Clement Michael Kasense Ndala, MJF.

After the farewell hugs to our children at Lilongwe International Airport, for DGE Spouse Agnes and myself, it was a long whole night flight across the Middle East, the Gulf, India, China and eventually landing on that far away island of South Korea. It was a landing/opening of an awesome new lions experience that would change our lives in lions. As we stepped out of the Immigration into the wel-come parlour of Busan Airport, Agnes and I were welcomed with singing and ululating female lions of Korea complete in traditional regalia and later every-one jostling to pose with us. It was home immediately on sight of the lions lapel pins and regalia stealing the show including in the coach and on arrival at the ho-tel. The meeting and welcome of DG’s from around the world was tear shedding. We all had similar experi-ences and anticipation to share. The one week DGE seminar before convention was the deepest experience of commitment to leadership in lions as LCI went about inculcating in us confidence for our impending senior responsibility and assured us of all-round support on any aspect of our job with resources distributed. Especially awesome was the bonding between us the 750 DGE’s from around the globe; the call for us to be friends and comrades not only in our year but throughout our lives, from Viet-nam to Germany, China to Canada, Malawi to USA, India to Russia. My heart went out to the female lions leaders from my District 412 when I interacted on my DGE seminar desk with my team mates of the only two Governors from Russia, both female. Warmly invited me and DG Spouse Agnes to Moscow for their convention to share the D412 experience. So humbling! Then there were those evening invitations to national cocktails and then finally the Africa maiden reception before the crowds of 55,000 lions started surging in from across the globe for the parade and convention. DRC Congo proposed that D412 carry the first ever ‘United Africa Banner; it was such an honour to us. The highlight was the activities associated with the Outgoing and Incoming Presidents, changing of the Guard! Outgoing planted 13 million trees and the incoming rolled out plans to enhance literacy rates in underdeveloped parts of the world especially Africa. We will talk more about this in the coming days. So, as Agnes and I left Busan, back to that long whole night flight on that huge and comfortable state of the art Boeing 787 to Addis and finally to Lilongwe, ‘We Had Come, Seen and Conquered’. As your Governor, I now faced the future of our lead-ership tenure with confidence, cemented by inspired DG spouse, total LCI personal support and connec-tions to fellow DG’s around the globe. More importantly, we were changed lions leaders, the realization that our mission was not to prepare us for ‘our year’, no, but for a lifelong responsibility of lions leadership service and lasting lions relationships across the globe. MESSAGES FROM THE DG TEAM

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST VICE DISTRICT

GOVERNOR

Fellow lions it really is my greatest pleasure to write in

this first issue of our newsletter as your First Vice

District Governor. It fills me with great humility to

finally accept that you, the lions of District 412 have

really entrusted me with the responsibility of serving in

your District Governor Team for 2012-13.

Our District Governor Lion Clement Kasense Ndala

has demonstrated his visionary leadership by selecting

the theme” Leadership with Integrity and Efficiency”

as his theme for 2012-13 for without the right leaders

of high ethical standards, integrity and who work with

efficiency we cannot guarantee the success that our

district rightly deserves.

The goals have been set, all of us as the support system

in the district have now got to get ourselves to work

almost immediately. The district has struggled over the

last few years with membership numbers failing to

reach the mandatory district strength of 1250. This

year we implore you all to do what we know you are

capable of doing and bring those numbers back and we

can be proudly a fully fledged district. Remember as

Robert Louis Stevenson says “Don‟t judge each day by

the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant”

In my portfolio as the LCI& D412 Events; District

Finance Committee Chairman for this Lionistic year I

will strive to keep you abreast of all LCI and District

Events so that we will together steer our ship to the

success that our district governor has set to achieve.

Leadership with Integrity and Efficiency requires that

we communicate always and work together and I look

forward to outstanding service to our communities at

local level throughout the district.

Lion Clever Mugadza

First Vice District Governor

cessful because there are always thinking

MESSAGE FROM THE SECOND VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Lion Leaders, Fellow Lions; First and Foremost, I would like to sincerely thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be part of the District Gover-nor’s Team to serve our District in 2012-2013 Lionistic Year. I do not take your confidence and trust in me for granted. With humility, I embark on this journey as your Second Vice District Governor. As an Assistant in the Administration of the District and as a

Representative of the District Governor, I will work to further our District Governor’s Vision and Theme for the year which I believe as a team we will be able to accomplish and ulti-mately improve the District Operations. As your Cabinet Officer responsible for Membership and Re-tention, I urge you to invite more people to be Lions, to part-ner with Leos on projects and to nurture young people, our most precious resource. Most of all, resolve to care for fellow Lions like family members. The strength of our association is a result of warm relationships among Lions. The more we care for one another, the more we will retain our members and serve together effectively. I am sure we will all “Hit the ground running” looking for a

new member or getting back the lost. What goal are you setting for yourselves? What contribution are you going to make towards the growth of our District? Kutt Thomas once said and I quote “I feel that the most important step in any major accomplishment is setting a specific goal. This enables you to keep your mind focused on your goal. And of the many obstacles that will arise while you are striving to do your best” end of quote. TOGETHER, WE CAN, TOGETHER WE WILL ACHIEVE MORE

“LEADERSHIP WITH EFFICIENCY & INTERGRITY”

The Midlands State University Leo club participated in the

95thLeo-Lions Club International Convent which was

graced by Leos and Lions from the global community, a

total of 55 629 members and indeed it was an honour for us

to represent our District.

The purpose for this International Convention was to

bridge the gap between African based university clubs and

Euro-Asian based ones. Furthermore, this was a noble

opportunity for cultural exchange programs and social

networks that we believe will enhance and educate the

Leos as well as effectively and positively empower our

District 412 with innovative humanitarian and community

based projects.

The club is proud and greatly honoured to inform you that

it won the following award;

Participation Certificates

Team-Work Award (presented with lapel pins)

And to the greatest achievement, 2 members were elected

into the Leo Club Program Advisory Panel;

Leo Takudzwa C. Zvobgo- Leo District 412 President

Leo Regnald Mutizwa- Leo District 412 Secretary

Lion Paul Mupfiga - Lion Representative for District 412

This advisory panel represents all Leos across the globe

and advises them as situations arise and it is the link be-

tween Leos and Lions on the International level. The pur-

pose of the Leo Club Program Advisory Panel is to provide

Leo and Lion panellists with an opportunity to represent

their respective constituents in matters which affect the

Leo Club Program. The panel acts in an advisory capacity

with Lions Clubs International as it evaluates issues related

to the program. Items which impact the program are pre-

sented to the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors

for consideration and final approval. Letters of appoint-

ment will be sent by 30 September as this is for the two

year term beginning October 1, 2012 and ending Septem-

ber 30, 2014.

Yours in Leoism,

Leo Reginald Mutizwa (Leo Distrisct Secretary)

REGION 2 COOL WORKSHOP

WORDS OF WISDOM

The journey of life is not about being right or

pretending that you know it all- its about learn-

ing and growing every step of the way.

We can learn from successes –our own as

well as that of others but we can learn even

faster from our failures and of those around

us. The key point, no doubt, is 'keep learning'

The first Region 2 Leadership workshop for

this Lionistic year was convened at Harare

Children ’ s home by Lion Eric Muse-

sengwe, the Region Chairperson.

The workshop ran over 2 days i.e. 14-15

July 2012 and was attended by members

from the following Clubs; Harare City ( the

hosts ) , Harare West, Harare The Phoenix,

Marondera, UZ Campus, Redcliff, Sebakwe,

Kwekwe, Karoi & Chiredzi.

31 Lions in total attended the schools of

instruction which were rolled out by a faculty

comprised of the following members; PDG

Pat Mapanda ( FDI ) , FVDG Clever

Mugadza ( SLLI ) , Region Chairperson

Lion Eric Musesengwe ( SLLI) , D.A.C Lion

Jona Machaya ( SLLI ) , PLPD D.A.C Lion

Cynthia Maweni, D.A.C Lion Dr. Alva

Senderayi & D.A.C Lion Piraishe Mabhena.

The faculty touched on various topics in-

cluding the following; The 2012—13 Presi-

dential theme; 2012-13 DG ’ s theme, Club

Excellence process, LCI Grants, Roles of

President, Secretary & Treasurer, The

Leadership Resource centre, Mentoring, e-

Clubhouse & Setting Goals.

Participants pay attention to the International Presi-

dent‟s theme presentation.

REGION 2 ZIMBABWE NORTH EASTERN ADDRESS

I greet you all fellow Lions for gathering to this important meeting where we want to position ourselves as Lions Leaders for this coming term of office. The purpose of this meeting is to begin the year on one chord. Musically a chord is the harmonious sound of three or more musical notes. And harmony is the pleasing quality of musical notes com-bined together. And i believe as Region 2

Zimbabwe North Eastern we have the capacity and ability to sing to-gether a Lions harmonious song. Of cause our song title will be “leadership, efficiency and Integrity in service” our 2012-13 theme. As Region Chairperson I am looking at us working and consolidating in three key areas namely: Retention and Extension of our membership, Restarting and starting new clubs and Increasing LEO Clubs. As we retain our membership let us embrace enthusiasm, integrity, passion and energy to drive our clubs and zones. Remember that medi-ocrity (i) lack of drive and (ii) the silo mentality chases away members. More importantly let us not be resistant to change. As men and women of integrity: coach, guide and motivate your members. As leaders let us supervise and see success in our clubs, zones and the region as a whole. In the process let us observe the Ethic and Philosophy of Lion-ism and the result is that we will enjoy the bigger picture of “WE SERVE”. Some of our clubs are going through difficult times. This is when our mental and emotional resilience is required. Difficult times require discipline and emotional strength to succeed. In this Lionistic term let us agree that “Better is not good enough but the best is yet to come”. Let us always have a two way communication approach to improve efficiency. As Region 2 – Zimbabwe North Eastern let us understand and compre-hend that Nothing is as strong as team spirit. Finally in assuming your positions you have undertaken an important leadership role in District 412. Lion Eric Musesengwe Region 2 Chairman

LIONS TURN WASTE INTO RECREATION

Lions Club Jubilee have successful

completed their first project for this Lionistic year.

They undertook a sponsored walk

some two years back and raised

funds to develop and landscape the land outside a clinic to build a park

and play area for the kids. The place which was lying for a long time as a

waste land has now turned into a beautiful play ground and a park for

the recreation of patients.

The park was handed over to the Hospital Superintendent of

Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital, Dr.Sinvula on 23rd of June 2012.

This function was well attended by Lions representing all the Lions clubs

in Francistown, some staff from the IDCC clinic and NRH hospital and
