I f the Germans' opponents hadhoped that the short prepara-

tion time and late arrival would beto their advantage, they wereforced to revise their opinions assoon as Hannes Löhr's men play-ed their first game . A decisive point against theGuatemalan team was their

lack of fitness . Although Roldanhad had the squad together fortraining, the pace at which hiskey players were accustomed toplay as semi-professionals intheir own championships wasnot up to what would be expect-ed at the Olympic tournament .

Roldan was well aware of theweaknesses of his team and hadadjusted his tactics accordingly,playing with a strengthened4-man defence in front of thelibero . What mainly caused thissystem to founder was lack ofcondition and weaknesses inbasic football moves . Four goalsconceded against Italy in the firsthalf, three against Iraq and fouragainst Zambia in the secondhalves indicate fairly clearlywhere the main fault lay. TheGuatemalans were able to de-fend quite capably as long astheir strength and their concen-tration lasted, but after that theball was lost repeatedly in mid-field and the team fell apart .

The two forwards were strandedup front nearly all the time, withhardly any support from the restof the team . Most attackingmoves faded out quite quickly,and only dead-ball situationscaused any problems for anopposing defence . The two occa-sions on which they were suc-cessful both came from setpieces, one following a free kickand the other from a corner, bothwell-rehearsed moves .

In all three games, the Guatemal-ans were kept very busy defend-ing against their opponent'scountless attacks . It is thereforeunderstandable that they hardlyever risked going forward in anattack of their own . Their show-ing during this tournamentmakes it clear that what theyneed is more frequent encoun-ters with better quality teams, sothat they can develop the neces-sary toughness and gather ex-perience . A professional leaguein the country is also essential .

Despite considerable difficulties (theGulf War with Iran still made it impos-sible for them to play any games athome) the Iraqis managed to earntheir tickets to Seoul. Apesar de las circunstancias adver-sas (la Guerra en el Golfo con Irán im-pidió la organización de partidos lo-cales), los iraquíes lograron conse-guir el pasaje para Seúl . La Asocia-ción convocó a 28 jugadores para uncampo de entrenamiento el 7 deagosto . Varios titulares tuvieron querehusar pues tenían que cumplir suservicio militar . La selección se con-centró en un centro de entrenamien-to de un mes de duración en Inglate-rra antes de partir a Seúl el 4 de se-tiembre. R occa's formation was in theclassic Italian pattern, with a

libero (Tassotti), three man-mark-ing defenders, four mid-fieldersand two forwards . But althoughthey were an attractive team towatch, and were tactically andtechnically gifted, both as individ-uals and as a team, this was notenough in this high class compe-tition to bring them the Olympicvictory that they had hoped for .

The lack of stability in defencethat became apparent in thegame against Guatemala, andoccasional weaknesses in finish-ing became more and more of aburden for the Italians . After de-feating the Latin Americanseasily 5-2, their complacencywas rudely shaken by the 4-0defeat against Zambia . Nowwiththeir backs tothe wall for the nextgame against Iraq, they pulledthemselves together and ma-naged a shaky 2-0 win whichsaw them through into thequarter-final against Sweden . Inthat match too theyfound scoringgoals a difficult task and onlywore down the Scandinavians inextra time . But the effort used upall their resources . In the semi-final, a Virdis goal kindled theirhopes, but Dobrovolski's equalis-er and two more from Narbeko-vas and Mikhailitchenko in extratime (the second long gamewithin a short period) were toomuch for them . Even the bronzemedal slipped out of their graspearly on in the game for thirdplace, as Klinsmann and Klep-pinger gave the Germans anearly and decisive lead .

Six games, three defeats, two ofwhich were heavy ones : theOlympic tournament hardlyturned out the way that the Ital-ians had hoped . Above all theirdefence made anything but asound impression, and it is along, long time since an Italianteam finished a major tourna-ment with a goal difference ofminus thirteen . In comparisonwith their opponents the Italiandefenders were on the smallside, and in the air and in deadball situations they often cameoff second best . La «Squadra azzurra» avaitcependant épuisé son potentieloffensif . Contre l'URSS, en demi-finale, un but de Virdis lui permit

Después de la fácil vic-toria de 5 a 2 contra los centroa-mericanos netamente inferiores,los italianos, satisfechos de símismos, sufrieron una derrotaestrepidosa contra Zambia por 4a 0 . Con la soga al cuello, hicieronun esfuerzo supremo en su últi-mo partido de grupo contra Irak yobtuvieron finalmente una victo-ria angustiosa de 2 a 0, con la cualpudieron pasar a loscuartos de fi-nal para enfrentarse a Suecia .También en este desenlace fue-ron absolutamente incapaces derealizar un gol, pudiendo luegovencer a los escandinavos a du-ras penas en el tiempo suple-mentario .

The Korean Republic had the oppor-tunity to put together a strong andstable team that knew each otherwell, but too many changes, at thelevel of players, trainer and at the topof the association prevented theOlympic tournament '88 from beingthe success that they had hoped forwhen they began their preparationsfor it back in 1982 . The team thatwas heralded as "The Young KoreanTigers - Olympiad '88" had somesuccesses during their preparationfor the tournament, but looking backon them they must be considered incontext. Many of them were againstinferior Asian teams, and theseperformances tended to hide theweaknesses that were apparentagainst stronger opposition andwhich should have been dealt withaccordingly.

n looking for the reasons whyI Korea did not do as well asexpected, one fact cannot be ig-nored : the Olympic team wasrather a reflection of the whole ofKorean society ; external factorswhich were beyond their controlled to the loss of otherwise valu-able qualities . The Koreans' styleof plan lacked ideas, showed nocreativity ; speed and strict disci-pline would be enough to carrythem through . Perhaps this re-cipe would work against secondclass opposition, but againstteams likeArgentina orthe SovietUnion it was not enough .

The Koreans' lack of creativitybecame quite evident when theywere attacking, trying to dictatethe game and to pull the oppos-ing defence out of position . Theirwell-executed plan of playing adiagonal pass down the wing andthen centering was fine, but itwas only a danger to the otherteam for as long as it took themtime to get used to it . Once thishad happened, these stereo-typed moves were of no value,and even before that stage indi-vidual weaknesses in finishingprevented the Koreans from scor-ing as many goals as they per-haps deserved . At the back too,where Cho was in charge ofdirecting the defence, thingswere not much better, and part ofthe reason was a lack of supportfrom the mid-fielders who hadproblems of theirown (weaknessin the tackle, being dispossessed

But one should not paint tooblack a picture of the Koreanteam . A 0-0 in their openinggame against the Soviet Union,the eventual winners of the tour-nament, was no mean achieve-ment . The home team showedcreditable speed and stamina,and every player contributed un-selfishly to the good of the team ;all of them showed good skillsand, up to a certain point, goodtactical understanding . The bur-den of playing at home and beingexpected to succeed has upsetbigger teams in the past, and theKoreans too suffered in this re-spect . The main need, if theywish to succeed in the future,would seem to be more gamesagainst top class opposition .

A few words about the policy ofthe automatic qualification of thehost country. Being assured of aplace in the Final Competition sixyears in advance can have advan-tages and disadvantages . Theadvantage is that the team canestablish a long-term plan forthe achievement of its aim, buton the other side they will lackthe serious competition in thepre-tournament phase thatwould show the coach where themental and physical limitations ofhis players lay. This disadvantagewas made brutally apparent tothe team officials as their playersdisappointed the local crowds,and were eliminated after thegroup games without a singlewin to their credit. For theKoreans the Olympic dream be-came something of a nightmare .

Le manque de créativité fut fla-grant lorsqu'il s'agissait de fairele jeu et de maintenir la défenseadverse sous pression . used for years, operating a 4-4-2system (or 4-3-3 when neces-sary), with the defence playing inline and employing pressing tac-tics . Lennartsson is not newto the job of coaching a represen-tative side .

After the tricky opening drawagainst Tunisia, the team lifted itsgame against PR China and wasparticularly strong against theGermans, finishing up top of theirgroup . The only irony was thatthis meant that they would haveto face Italy and notZambia in thequarter-final . If the Chinese hadbeen beaten by Sweden's mov-ing into a higher gear and makinguse of their physical superiority,this proved to be insufficientagainst the Italians . The South-ern Europeans closed up thespaces cleverly, and althoughthey were pinned back in def-ence they never lost their over-view. The Swedes made it easierfor them in a way by always at-tacking atthe same pace, and nottrying to slow the game down fora while and then come to lifeagain with a sudden throughpass . Their individual skills, their abilityto play short passes in tightsituations and thus escape fromtrouble was of little avail . Whenthe time came to open the gameup by playing long passes they

Usually the Africans played a4-3-3 system, with Smirani as lib-ero and Maloul in mid-fieldattempting to direct the team .But too few impulses were gen-erated in mid-field, too muchtime was wasted there and therewas too little support for the for-wards . The few successfulmoves were too stereotyped tobe much of a threat to an oppos-ing defence . With these weak-nesses in mind, the openingdraw against Sweden must beregarded as something of a sur-prise .
