TheForeignServiceInstitute(FSI)istheUSGovernment’strainingcen-terfordiplomats,ambassadorsandJames-Bondtypes.They’vebeeninthe languagebusinesssince1947andhavesomeof thebestdataonlanguagedifficultiesforEnglishspeakers.Theirstudentstakeonanin-tenseworkload:25hoursoflanguageclassesperweekand3-4hoursofindependentstudyperday.Notsurprisingly,theyreachadvancedlevelsoffluencyveryquickly.We’llbeabletobeatthemintermsoftotaltimespent,becauseourmethodsaremoreefficient.FSIcoursesarerelative-lytraditionalinformat,althoughtheydohavearespectableemphasisonpronunciationthatkeepsthemaheadofthecurve.Theymaybeatusintermsoftotaltimetofluency,simplybecauseyougetalotdonewhenyoumakelanguagelearningyourfulltimejob.Still,ouruseofimagery,mnemonicsandspacedrepetitionwillpushusaheadintermsofoverallefficiency.
