The food backpacks come with nutritious, easy-to-open food sent home each week and typically include protein, milk and fruit juice.

Please visit either Whataburger location at 2401 Gilmer Road or 1479 E. Harrison Road (by Lear Park), between August 20th – August 31st and have the opportunity to donate $1 or more when paying for your order. Pine Tree Fishing Club Competes in Ultimate High School FishingPine Tree Fishing Club competes with around 40 schools and 250 other students

in competitive tournament bass fishing. The club competes in a program called Ultimate high school fishing. Ultimate High School Fishing requires students to raise money through sponsorships from local businesses. The sponsorship program allows the students to become vested which qualifies them to win scholarship money at the end of the classic. Last year students raised over $60,000 in scholarship money. This year we are hoping to increase that amount with Plano Marine of Longview giving away a brand new bass boat to the angler of the year.

This is a great opportunity for students to build relationships in the fishing community with the other cities ranging from Dallas, Texarkana, and even into Houston. There are seven tournaments that the students compete in throughout the year. Tournament prizes are given to every competitor. First, second, and third places receive trophies.

Based on points accumulated from fishing tournaments they can qualify for scholarship money if they are a high school student. They also can qualify to fish

PINE TREE PACEHOPE NOTES to Stoneman- Douglas High School

The PACE SAVE Promise Club initiated a community service learning project that invited participation from area school districts, community agencies, volunteer groups, city departments, and others; including SAVE -Students Against Violence Everywhere. This “Unite in Action” Service Project encouraged students and adults to work together to target youth violence in their communities.

The strategic focus of the project, developing the capacity for empathy within the students, was demonstrated in various ways. Students participated in weekly anti-violence lessons and circle talks. Students were able to express their feelings on violence in our schools, communities, and our nation. Students offered their view on standard violence prevention measures and how to react when confronted with violence.

A total of 3451 HOPE Notes were mailed to Marjory Stoneman-Douglas High School. The Hope Notes were a tool to share the message of HOPE to the school and the Parkland, FL community. Secondly, the project was designed to support the social-emotional wellness of the students in our community by promoting student capacity for empathy.

Thank you to all of the contributors, without your time, support, and encouragement, we would not have been able to complete this task.

which means supplies food for the competitors and their parents. The students get to walk across the stage and develop communication skills when asked questions on stage in front of many parents and students. Many universities offer scholarships to students. This is a great opportunity for students.

August 13 will be teachers’ first day on contract at Pine Tree ISD and they will be attending the 3rd annual PTISD Mini-Conference held at the High School. The theme for this year’s mini-conference is “All In” which is the district’s mantra. The sessions are presented by PIne Tree’s staff including teachers, instructional coaches, assistant principals, principals, the business office, human resources, transportation, and the Curriculum and Instruction department.

The professional development provided during the mini-conference will prepare teachers for the school year focused on discipline, balanced literacy, safety, guided math, and much more. For example, some of the session titles are: “Building Powerful Relationships”, Beginning of the Year LPAC”, Emergency Response Protocol”, Updates on Child Protective Services and Case Management”, “New Teacher District Program Applications”, “Writing is Learning!”, “Formatives on the Fly”, and Take a Book Walk through the Literacy Continuum.”

Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, Pine Tree High School will offer Law Enforcement classes, available for students in grades 9-12.The classes will compliment Forensics and be listed as one part of the public services endorsement.

The course will be taught by Officer Josh Marrs, and the class will include terminology, reporting, legal and ethical behavior of officers, laws regarding the public, different criminal defenses and offenses, and collecting evidence.

Pine Tree High School will continue its partnership with the LeTourneau association by offering many dual-credit courses such as: health science practicum, medical courses, psychology, and human nutrition.

Dual-credit courses from Kilgore College, such as English, U.S. History, Government, Economics, and more, will continue to be offered next year.

These classes have become extremely popular among students, so they can earn college credit while still in high school. Some students go to college with their freshman year already completed, thanks to the abundance of courses offered by Pine Tree.

An UIL class period has been talked about, and while not finalized, it is a possibility for next year. This will allow Pine Tree students to perfect their UIL competition skills and also enhance their employability in a variety of fields, especially in math and science and journalism and writing. Students will get important help in becoming more proficient in these fields, and that will allow them to get internships and jobs in these fields as soon as they leave high school.

PTHS will continue to offer the courses AP Seminar and AP Research, both classes apart of AP Capstone program, which helps students with research based materials. The students could receive the AP Capstone Diploma once they complete the courses.

For the past two years, Parkway’s Library under the direction of Mrs Jolene Ray has been implementing Phase I Makerspace Lab. The benefits of the Makerspace labs ha great. The students have experienced “hand-on” learning in unique and creative ways.

With the funds received from the Pine Tree Foundation, Parkway Elementary will be able to begin the 2018-2019 school year implementing Phase II of the Makerspace Lab. The funding of this grant (The i-Make Project) will incorporate learning activities with technology.

This integration of technology applications will bolster student confidence and increase student engagement. We are excited to be able to offer this amazing program for all of our Parkway students.

One of Parkway’s amazing teachers, Mrs. Katie Hammer, received a Pine Tree Foundation grant that will allow all 1st and 2nd students to experience nature “up close.” During the 2018-2019 school year these students will be growing plants in garden towers from seeds that will encourage monarchs to make Parkway one of their yearly stops in the migration pattern.

The towers will have edible plants as well as host plants for Monarchs. Parkway students will be connecting with Monarch Watch which will allow our little scientist to help in a big way. As the Monarchs come to lay their eggs, we will have a first hand look at their life cycle as well as tag Monarchs with special radio sensors that will enable scientist to track the Monarchs on their flight and gather valuable data.

This grant will give students the ability to observe, record and compare plant functions as well as the stages of the insect life cycle. The students will also learn about decomposes through the unique way the garden towers allow for composting in their centers with the help of soil, scraps, and the farmers best friend, the earthworm.

We truly are growing greatness….. whatever it takes at Parkway Elementary.

PTHS Offers Challenging

Academic Experience

Pine Tree High School seeks to provide a variety of AP courses in an effort to give our students a rigorous and challenging academic experience. Students choose to take AP courses based on the high level thinking skills required and the rigorous nature of the content. Students are also given the opportunities to explore topics in-depth, think critically, and analyze and synthesize topics. AP course experiences also allow students to develop clear and refined written and verbal communication skills.

Pine Tree High School offers the following AP courses:AP Capstone: AP Seminar and ResearchArts: Art History, Music Theory, Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio, Studio Art: 2-D Design Portfolio, Studio Art: 3-D Design PortfolioEnglish: English Language and Composition, English Literature and CompositionForeign Language: Spanish Language and CultureHistory and Social Sciences: Macroeconomics, Psychology, United States Government and Politics, United States History, and World History.Mathematics: Calculus ABSciences: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics C: Mechanics Additionally, the high school offers many pre-AP courses that provide the prerequisites needed in the AP courses. AP courses seek to prepare students to perform successfully at the collegiate level. Pine Tree High School consistently learns of graduates

who attribute their successes beyond high school to the experiences gained at the AP level. Here are some comments made by PTHS graduates. “Calculus was a breeze at Texas A & M. Students in my class were asking questions about things we learned in high school.” (Made an ‘A’ in the course.)~ Connor Terry – 2017 Graduate “The AP courses were more rigorous and demanding and helped encourage intellectual stimulation. Because they were more demanding, it helped me

develop study skills that prepared my for my college courses. Additionally, AP tests helped improve my critical thinking and problem-solving skills which has helped me tremendously when taking my nursing school exams.”

~ Katie Miller – 2014 Graduate “My AP classes helped me in college by not only awarding college credit but preparing me with the tools I needed to navigate the academic expectations

in college courses. The rigor of my AP courses was a tremendous example of what would lay ahead when I reached Texas A & M. I was able to apply the study skills learned in and required by my AP coursework to every course I have taken at the university level.”

Full STEAM Ahead! The most common use of the

word “steam” is when a person is referring to the water vapor that rises from a pot of boiling water. In PTISD, steam has an entirely different meaning. You will most often see it as STEAM. Birch Elementary, Parkway Elementary and Pine Tree Primary are the STEAM Academies within the district. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM fosters an environment that supports the 21st century skills of collaboration and teamwork, creativity and imagination, critical thinking, and communication.

Research states that without these skills, students will struggle to be able to participate in the global economy and they will not be adequately prepared for college and work. Simply stated, STEAM is a way to allow children to explore how all things are related to each other and the real world. Our STEAM Academies provide students with the opportunities to be challenged with activities that require them to think critically and collaborate with teammates.

A big part of STEAM is the students being involved in the Engineering Design Process. The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a problem. Many times the solution involves designing a product that meets certain criteria or accomplishes a certain task. Pine Tree Primary provides their students with STEAM time as a part of their daily schedule, while at Birch and Parkway STEAM is integrated into their lessons each week.

Preparing to Return to SchoolPreparing to return to school is a mix of

excitement and anxiety for our Pirates of all ages. During the summer months, routines and schedules become a bit more relaxed causing meal and rest times to vary. Fortunately, implementing a few activities could be useful to get everyone back into the swing of things just in time for school to begin.

1. Return everyone to school-time sleep routines. About a week or two before school

starts, begin your school sleep routine. Students should begin going to bed at the time they would when in school. For late sleepers, begin waking them up a little earlier each day for about a week. After that week, then have them get up at the time they would when going to school.

2. Ease your students back into school routines. Arrange the meal schedule to have students eating at the times they would during school. Plan some activities that would have them leave and come home around the same times they would if they were in school.

3. Shop for school supplies together. To encourage excitement about returning to school, go on a school supply shopping trip with your child. Allow them to pick out a backpack or something else that is unique and special for them to use at school.

4. Set up a homework station. Sit down and visit with your students to discuss a designated time and location where they will do their homework each day. It can be somewhere quiet or even in the kitchen while you are preparing dinner. Make sure to make it a time when you are available in case they need help.

5. Phase out nap time for kindergarteners. If you have a kindergartner that still naps, begin decreasing nap times until there isn’t a nap in their day. You want to make sure they are ready for a full school day without a nap by the time school begins.

6. Practice morning routines. For a few days prior to school starting, have the students practice their morning routines. Practice everything including getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, packing their lunch, and ready to leave in time for the bus or for you to drop them off at school.

7. Eating a good breakfast at home or school. Eating a healthy breakfast is linked to many benefits for students during their school day. Some of which include improved concentration and memory, higher ability to perform problem-solving tasks, and establishing healthy habits for later in life. (https://www.fns.usda.gov/sites/default/files/sbp/benefitsbreakfast.pdf)

A little preparation and organization can help ensure a smooth transition from summer to the start of a new school year. By being equipped with a plan, you can enjoy the rest of the summer break.

SAY “YES” TO SUMMER LEARNINGYour brain is constantly absorbing knowledge, making connections, and growing dendrites. Learning isn’t just a school activity it happens everyday year-round.. Parents can help their children by engaging in some free simple activities during the summer. They won’t even know that they are learning. Ways to help your child:• Put the devices down and have conversations about the things you see in the world around you. Whether it is a trip to the grocery store or a drive to grandma’s house talk about it. Conversations with adults increase receptive and expressive vocabularies which in turn increase reading levels. Learning to read is closely tied to learning to talk and listen.• Model reading and writing for your child to see. Children mimic the actions of the adults around them. Write a grocery list, read a magazine article, pick up a great book at the public library, or start a summer journal to chronicle your thoughts and reflections. Reading and writing should be a part of everyday life and a joy not a chore.• Take your child grocery shopping with you and then let them help. Have them read the items on the grocery list and locate them in the store. Let your child add the cost of the items as you add them to

the shopping cart. Teach them how to compare prices to find the best deal. As an added bonus, use coupons for some mental math.• Complete the Summer Learning Activities Packet that was sent home with your child at the end of the school year. Students who return completed packets at the beginning of the school year will receive a treat from local restaurants.• Visit a library or book bus near you. Make sure you check out the Birch Elementary library, Books Arrgh Us book bus, or Longview Public Library. Most importantly, have a great summer and take time to learn everyday.

During the 2017 Legislative Session there were 2 bills passed that impact the awarding of high school diplomas to students who entered grade 9 prior to the 2011-12 school year. These 2 bills (SB 1005 and SB 463) created 3 possible options by which eligible students who entered grade 9 before the 2011-12 school year may qualify to be issued a high school diploma

despite the fact that they have not performed satisfactorily on their relevant exit-level test(s).Students who entered grade 9 in the 2011-12 school year and beyond are required to pass

5 STAAR EOC (End of Course) tests; Algebra I, Biology, US History, English I, and English II. SB 149 which was passed in the 2015 Legislative Session, provided an alternate path to earning a diploma for students who completed all required coursework but did not met the passing standard on 1 or 2 of the 5 required STAAR EOC assessments. Under the legislation, an Individual Graduation Committee (IGC) must convene and recommend additional requirements including either remediation or the completion of a project to demonstrate proficiency in the subject area of each course where the student did not meet the passing standard.

Although SB 149 made no allowances for students who entered grade 9 prior to the 2011-12 school year and were under the previous TAKS (Texas Assessment of Academic Skills) graduation requirements, the 2 bills passed in 2017 did provide alternative ways for students to earn their high school diploma. These options include:

1. Meet satisfactory performance levels on alternative assessments including the SAT, ACT, TSIA, and STAAR that are equivalent to the performance levels required to be met on TAKS or TAAS. (Specified in the Commissioner’s Rule 19 TAC §101.4003 and adopted as a final rule effective November 5, 2017)

2. Meet alternative requirements for graduation by providing evidence of attainment of an industry-recognized license/certification, evidence of current active military duty/honorable or general discharge, or successfully completed college-level coursework and earned college credit. This option was adopted in final rule on May 3, 2018.

3. The final option pursuant to Commissioner Rule 19 TAC §74.1027, allows the Board of Trustees to adopt local alternative requirements as determined by a Local Graduation Committee.

The resolution to consider local alternative graduation requirements was adopted by our Board of Trustees on June 11, 2018. Under this option, an eligible student who failed to meet the passing standard on a TAKS Exit Level assessment, but who meet all other graduation requirements, may be eligible to receive a high school diploma under the provisions listed in the resolution.

For information about the Alternate Graduation options for students who entered High School prior to the 2011-12 school year, please contact the High School you last attended.
