Dear Educator,
At Scholastic, we believe that developing robust literacy skills is at the heart of empowering children to thrive in school and in life. That’s why we create year-round, comprehensive literacy solutions that support the whole child—in school, at home, and in the community. As you know, it’s essential to provide all students with high-quality, engaging books to promote independent reading during the summer months. Research indicates that a lack of summer reading is the greatest contributor to the ongoing achievement gap. Summer reading is, therefore, an essential part of a yearlong, comprehensive literacy plan.
That’s why we’re excited to share some of our newest comprehensive summer reading programs to help you turn the summer slide into the summer leap:
Summer Reading workbook bundles combine My Books Summer Take-Home Book Packs with a skill-building activity book to further motivate students all summer long.
Summer Reading Program collections offer a variety of summer-themed fiction and nonfiction books that will engage students in reading and learning all summer long. These are perfect for summer camps that can help expand student learning.
Family and Community Engagement solutions offer an abundant selection of cross-content, high quality books, family literacy events, and programs in partnership with leading expert Dr. Karen Mapp to support home and school relationships and empower families with support to combat the summer reading slide.
LitCamp is a breakthrough summer literacy program that combines innovative, research-based reading and writing lessons with an engaging and interactive summer camp approach for struggling readers.
Scholastic’s Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting national program that incentivizes summer reading through competition and prizes with free interactive resources to engage and motivate reading all summer.
Partner with Scholastic to build text-rich environments and foster the love of literacy. Please contact us at 1-800-387-1437 to find out how Scholastic and our comprehensive summer reading solutions can support the ongoing literacy development for all of your students.
Sincerely,
Greg WorrellPresident, Scholastic Education

Boy, Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs!
Circle It In the past, people believed many things about dinosaurs that we now know are wrong. As scientists learn more, ideas about dinosaurs change. Read each pair of sentences below. Circle the correct sentence in each pair. Look back at the book for information you need.
1. Fossil bones came from dragons. Fossil bones came from dinosaurs.
2. Iguanadon had a spike on its nose. Iguanadon had spiky hands.
3. Dinosaurs’ legs were straight under them. Dinosaurs’ legs stuck out like lizards’ legs.
4. Dinosaurs tails stuck straight out. Dinosaurs dragged their tails on the ground.
5. Small dinosaurs probably had feathers. All dinosaurs had scaly skin.
6. Big dinosaurs had colors and patterns. Big dinosaurs were gray like elephants.
7. Mother dinosaurs never saw their babies. Some dinosaurs took care of their babies.
Explain It Choose one pair of sentences from above. Explain how scientists figured out that the wrong guess was wrong. Use details from the book to explain. Write your ideas on another paper.

The Revolution of Evelyn Serranoby Sonia Manzano
One characteristic of good novel writing is its tightness. That means, how quickly the author can give the reader not only a sense of the setting and the main characters, but also, to introduce conflicts that the main character will have to face. In this novel, author Sonia Manzano manages to accomplish many of these goals in a single day. Revisit the first three chapters. Then answer the following questions using evidence from the text.
1. What is the first emotion Evelyn feels in the book?
2. Why doesn’t Evelyn want to do what her mother wants?
3. Describe Mami’s style of home decoration. What does it tell you about her personality? What Puerto Rican expression does Evelyn use to describe it?
4. How old is Evelyn and why does she call herself Evelyn?
5. What new activity does Evelyn start on that day? What is it like?
6. What kind of conversation takes place between Evelyn’s mother and the visitor?
7. How does the visitor’s arrival impact Evelyn?
Extra! On a separate sheet of paper, write two or three paragraphs answering this question: What can you infer about Evelyn from the first three chapters?

Three Times Luckyby Sheila Turnage
Using Your Senses One of the most powerful ways that authors make a story come alive is by using the five senses to make readers feel connected to the place they’re reading about and the characters who live there. Look through the book to find at least two examples of words, phrases, or sentences that use each of the following senses. As you do this, think about how they helped you imagine Mo and her town.

Unraveling Freedomby Ann Bausum
According to Unraveling Freedom, one of the most controversial laws of World War I was the Sedition Act of 1917. It gave government sweeping power to investigate and punish people who were deemed to express unpatriotic speech and opinions. Was this law fair? Read the following two quotes and flesh out a justification for each of them, based on the text. Then write your own opinion.
Opinion 1: “I see no reason why one should not say what one believes in times of war as in times of peace.” –Jane Addams, Social Activist, 1917
Opinion 2: “In time of great national peril, it is necessary sometimes that individuals shall be willing to surrender some of the privileges which they have for the sake of the greater good.” —Republican Congressman Dick Morgan of oklahoma, 1917
Your opinion: What is more important in wartime—freedom or safety? And does restricting speech provide freedom?

The Unexpected World of Natureedited by David Reisman
Suppose you are ernest Seton, who was featured in “Lobo, King of the Currumpaw,” the first piece in this collection. A newspaper reporter is interviewing you. fill in the answers to the questions.
Thank you for letting me interview you, Mr. Seton. first, what made you hunt the wolf called “Lobo, King of the Currumpaw?”
What made Lobo special?
Why did you get the job?
What were some of the ways Lobo outsmarted you?
What made Lobo vulnerable?
What happened on January 31, 1894?
I understand you took a photo that day. What effect did that photo have on you?
What have you been doing lately, Mr. Seton?
If you had one message you’d like us to remember, what would it be?
Now, use a separate sheet of paper to tell the story from Lobo’s point of view.

Literary Elements: Organization, Story Structure, Setting, Character, Theme
I. Organization and Story Structure
After you have read the entire story, reexamine the organization of the book. Note the three sections: “The Trance,” “The Dreamrun,” and “Dogsong.” Consider the content of the sections and write a short summary of each. At the end of your third summary, explain, using text evidence, why “Dogsong” has the same title as the book.
The Trance:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Dreamrun:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dogsong:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What was Paulsen’s purpose in structuring the book this way? How does this structure help tell the story? Cite text evidence to support your response.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Las palabras graves o llanas son aquellas que llevan la mayor fuerza de la voz en la penúltima sílaba. ¿Sabías que el 80% de palabras castellanas, con acento ortográfico o prosódico, (escrito o no escrito, respectivamente), son de este tipo? ¿Sabías que si éstas terminan en “vocal”, o en consonantes “n” o “s”, no llevan acento ortográfico?

Three Times Luckyby Sheila Turnage
Using Your Senses One of the most powerful ways that authors make a story come alive is by using the five senses to make readers feel connected to the place they’re reading about and the characters who live there. Look through the book to find at least two examples of words, phrases, or sentences that use each of the following senses. As you do this, think about how they helped you imagine Mo and her town.

Summer Reading Grade 2
If I Built a HouseWritten and illustrated by chris van dusen
A creative boy named Jack shares with his mother the many unique and interesting features that he would include in a house that he imagines building. And the home he has planned is anything but bland!
Read-Aloud Prompts (Whole Group)
Review the steps in “Modeling a Read-Aloud” (Summer Reading Planning Guide, page 16) to prepare for sharing this book. You can also use the following prompts, along with prompts of your own, to engage the group before, during, and after reading.
1. Organize the group. Check that everyone has a clear view of the book.
2. Explore the cover. Run your finger under the title and the author’s name as you read
them aloud, and ask:• What do you think this book will be about?
Point to the picture on the front cover and ask:• What do you think the boy is doing? How does he feel?
Show the back cover and ask:• How do you think the words and picture here might relate to the story?
Explain that this book is fiction. It is about imaginary characters and events.3. Preview the book.
Take a picture walk through the book, then ask: • What do you think Jack is doing at the beginning of the story?• What does he seem to be doing throughout most of the story?• What might the woman at the end of the story be thinking?
4. Activate prior knowledge. Before reading the book, ask:
• How is a blueprint—or a building plan—helpful to people who build houses?• Why would a planner make a model before beginning to build?• Have you ever drawn a plan for something you wanted to make?
If so, share about your plan.5. Introduce vocabulary.
Name and define the words bland, norm, function, dome, unique, decor, gravity, rare, detaches, bold, exquisitely, and hailed. (Then, during the read-aloud, you might pause when you come to these words to check for understanding.)
As you read, remember to: articulate words
clearly use lots of
expression allow time for taking
in the text and illustrations
pause for questions and responses
encourage discussion and sharing
You might find it helpful to write your specific questions and comments on sticky notes and attach them to the edges of the corresponding pages.
Continues on back.
