Introduction MXL Plug&Play kit for Subaru is the dash (with data acquisition in Pista version) developed for an easy and quick installation: with the minimum effort it will connect directly with the car ECU and will show, with no need of additional sensors installation and depending on the model:

• RPM; • Speed • Throttle position; • Engine Temperature; • Turbo compressor pressure; • Right bank injection advance; • Left bank injection advance; • Ignition advance; • Detonation sensor correction; • Fuel level; • Neutral sensor; • Disengaged clutch sensor; • Brake starting sensor; • Engine load; • Air flowing;

Warning: Received channels depend on the model of Subaru the kit is installed on;

moreover, thanks to infrared transmitter and receiver (included in MXL Pista kit, optional to MXL Strada one), it is possible to show/record lap times.

For anything not expressly included in this tutorial refer to MXL user manual.

1Chapter 2 – Kit installation

92.1 – Installation of MXL Strada/Pista kit

MXL Plug&Play kit for Subaru is expressly designed to be quite easy to install. Connect MXL external power to a +12Volt power source connected to the car master switch: this way the logger switches on/off together with the master switch.

Under the steering column is the OBD II diagnosis socket. Plug the proper harness connector of MXL in the socket shown here below.



This way the system receives the necessary information from the ECU.

Connect the cable labelled RS232 of MXL Strada/Pista wiring to the related Binder 719 RS232 connector of the interface board (technical drawing 04.554.53 – see appendix “A”) MXL is now connected to the vehicle lighting set. We would suggest to firmly fix MXL to a steady point on the dashboard through its back anchor plugs (red circled in the figure below).

As far as other sensors connection, optical receiver included, is concerned, assuming the harness allows it, please refer to MXL user manual included in the kit.

1 22.2 – Installation of MXL Pro/Pro05 kit

The steps to install MXL Pro/Pro05 on the vehicle are the same described for MXL Strada/Pista (paragraph 2.1). The only difference is in the connection of the interface board (technical draw 04.554.60) that connects OBD socket to the serial port of MXL Pro/Pro05 wiring. This board, in fact, needs to be connected to OBD socket as shown before and, to be powered, to any free channel of MXL Pro/Pro05: MXL PRO: - Speed 1 and 2; - Channels 5,6,7; MXL PRO05: - Speed 1,2,3 and 4; - Channels 8,9,10,11; Moreover it is necessary to connect serial cables as follows:

• RS232TX from the board is to be connected to RS232TX of MXL Pro/Pro05; • RS232RX from the board is to be connected to RS232RX of MXL Pro/Pro05, as

shown below:

2Chapter 3 – Configuration After MXL installation, it is necessary to configure it using Race Studio 2. This procedure is slightly different depending on whether the logger is an MXL Strada/Pista or an MXL Pro/Pro05.

1 03.1 – Configuration of MXL Strada/Pista

To create the configuration of MXL Strada/Pista, run Race Studio 2 software, select “AIM system manager” button on the left vertical keyboard ant then select MXL button.

Click on “NEW” button and “New Configuration” window appears:



It allows to load the default configuration of MXL Strada/Pista Plug&Play Subaru kit:

Select Data logger type: the bought logger (MXL Strada/Pista SUBARU). ECU Manufacturer and ECU Model are automatically set on SUBARU and SSM. Fill in a new configuration name. Fill in a vehicle name. Select Speed, Temperature and pressure unit of measure. Click “OK” to create the new configuration.

Warning: all additional channels CH_1, CH_2, CH_3, CH_4, CH_5, CH_6, CH_7 and CH_8 as well as Speed_1 channel are disabled by default. Refer to Race Studio

Configuration user manual for further information concerning MXL configuration.

The following step is MXL Strada/Pista display configuration. Select system configuration layer.



This window appears:

In this configuration are set RPM, shift lights and gear sensor fields as well as threshold values of ECT (Engine cooling temperature), over charging pressure and

fuel level. Displayed channels are ECT, TPS (throttle position sensor), over charging pressure and fuel level.

RPM: MAX value is set on 6800; Gear sensor: is set on calculated and needs gear calibration (see chapter 4). Shift light: default settings expects a 6900 rpm limiter; if the engine has an higher rpm value limiter (STI spec C 2000 cc 280 cv limiter is 7900 rpm; STI 2000 cc 265 cv limiter is 7500 rpm) shift light values need to be changed and set to a value a little lower than limiter max rpm value so that the red light switches on just before limiter intervention. Displayed channels are: ECT (engine cooling temperature – alarm set on 105 °C/221°F), TURBO PRESS (over charging pressure – alarm set on 1,3 bar), TPS (throttle opening percentage), FUEL_LEV (level of the petrol in the fuel tank – alarm set on 15% of the remaining fuel and odometer. Once on track (with optical transmitter and receiver) the logger switches automatically to track mode when a lap signal is recorded; switching on/off MXL it shows automatically the odometer (street mode).



To transmit the configuration to MXL ensure that the logger is switched on and well connected to the PC USB port and press “Transmission”.

Warning: for any further information concerning MXL configuration management refer to Race Studio Configuration user manual and/or to MXL user manual.



1 33.2 – Configuration for MXL Pro/Pro05

To create MXL Pro/Pro05 configuration run Race Studio 2 software. Select “AIM system manager” button on the left keyboard and then MXL.

Pressing “New” button, “New configuration” window appears:



It allows to load the default configuration of MXL Pro/Pro05 Plug&Play Subaru kit:

Select: Data logger type: MXL Pro05; Ecu Manufacturer : SUBARU Ecu Model is automatically set on SSM; Fill in configuration and vehicle name; Select speeds, temperatures and pressure units of measure; Click “OK” to create the new configuration.

Warning: all additional channels are enabled by default. Refer to Race Studio Configuration user manual for further information concerning MXL configuration.

The next step is configuring MXL Pro/Pro05 display. Select “System configuration” layer:



This window appears:

It is necessary to set its fields. The image here below shows AIM recommended configuration:

• RPM: select “ECU Signal” and set max value on 8000 rpm; • Gear Sensor: select “Calculated”; calibration procedure (chapter 4) is needed; • Channels for alarms: select from the drop down menu the channels to set an

alarm for. The above configuration shows ECT (engine cooling temperature – alarm threshold value 105°C), Turbo_Press (over charging pressure – alarm threshold value 1.3) and fuel level (alarm value is 15% of left fuel).

• Measure fields (displayed): displayed fields are ECT (Engine Cooling Temperature), TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), TURBO_PRESS over charging pressure) and Fuel Level.

• Show odometer: enabling this, checkbox odometer is shown; on track (with optical receiver and transmitter) the logger switches automatically on “Show lap time” when a lap signal is recorded. Switching on/off MXL odometer is shown again.

• Obscuring time and Lap segments: if a lap transmitter is available fill in 1 lap segment and 8 seconds obscuring time.

• Speed: select “Speed”. • Shift lights: Subaru default settings expect a limiter at 6900 rpm. If the engine

limiter has higher threshold values (STI spec C 2000 cc 280 cv limiter is set at 7900 rpm; STI 2000 cc 265 cv limitater is set at 7500 rpm) shift lights values need to be modified and set so that red light switches on just before limiter intervention.



To transmit the configuration to MXL be sure the logger is switched on and connected to the PC USB port.

Warning: for any further information concerning MXL configuration management refer to MXL user manual and/or to Race Studio Configuration user manual.



3Chapter 4 – Gear calibration Gear calibration is the last step of system configuration. To start:

• Press MENU button on MXL keyboard until STAR GEAR CALIB appears; • Press OK button. The display shows PRESS OK TO CLEAR; • Press OK button again. The logger is ready to start gear calibration procedure. • For a good gear learning, avoid disengaging the clutch when leaving and leave

each gear engaged for a while: engage all gears at list once; • Stop the vehicle without engaging neutral gear o pulling the clutch. • Re-start MXL: the display shows CALIBRATION OK. • If the procedure did not work properly the display shows ERROR GEAR CALC

and the logger automatically re-starts gear calibration procedure: leave again with the car engaging again all gears.

• If, on the contrary, display shows CALIBRATION OK, but the logger learnt a wrong calibration, re-start gear calibration from point 1.

Warning: To configure MXL it is necessary a PC with Microsoft Vista (only 32 bit) or Microsoft XP operating system and Race Studio 2 Software (included in the kit). Connect the

logger to the PC using the proper USB cable. Refer to Race Studio Configuration user manual for any further information

concerning software and driver installation and to MXL user manual for any further information concerning the logger functionalities.

4Chapter 6 – Channels In MXL Strada/ Pista standard configuration, channels sampled from the ECU are:

• ECU 1 RPM engine RPM; • ECU 2 SPEED vehicle speed; • ECU 3 TPS throttle position; • ECU 4 ECT engine temperature; • ECU 5 TURBO_PRESS turbo-compressor pressure; • ECU 6 IN_VVT_R right bank injection advance; • ECU 7 IN_VVT_L left bank injection advance; • ECU 8 IGN_ADV switch advance; • ECU 9 KNOCK_CORR advances correction depending on detonation

sensor; • ECU 10 FUEL_LEV fuel level; • ECU 11 NEUTRAL neutral signal; • ECU 12 CLUTCH clutch disengaged signal; • ECU 13 BRAKE brake starting signal; • ECU 14 ENG_LOAD instant engine load; • ECU 15 AIR_FLOW air flow in the air pipes;

Please remember that the number of displayed channels with effective values depends on Subaru Model. There are additional channels that, depending on the bought harness, can be freely used to connect additional sensors (suspension

potentiometers, brake pressure sensors, etc…). For further information concerning additional and/or custom sensors management

refer to MXL user manual.



5Chapter 7– Data download and analysis When a test session is finished it is possible to download data stored in the logger memory and save them in Race Studio 2 database. Data download is only available on MXL PISTA. For further instruction concerning data download and analysis, refer to the software user manual – except for MXL Strada that do not download data.



6Chapter 8 – MXL complementary products MXL is a modular system and can be expanded through a wide range of AIM products expressly dedicated to all pilots needs.

GPS Module

GPS module allows the user to sample a lot of important information: from brake and suspensions analysis to chassis information to the behavior of the driver on track. This way it is possible to see track lines and related speeds and even evaluate the mistakes exporting all the information to Google Earth ®. Sport performances will be reviewed through real images!

LCU-ONE CAN Lambda Controller

LCU-ONE CAN controls and allows to optimize Stoichiometric air / fuel ratio with high precision. To obtain the highest performances from the engine, LCU-ONE CAN uses a wide band Bosch LSU 4.9 probe and can detect punctual Lambda value from 0,65 to 1,6. For each cylinder the analysis concerns: air/fuel ratio (AFR), lambda value, temperature and probe diagnostics.

DaVid Data-Video System

DaVid is the system that allows user to merge – through an innovative technology – sampled data concerning the vehicle with up to two video signals coming from dedicated cameras, installed on board. It will be possible to review races, observe the driver behaviour on track, improve his performances or show friends the last victory directly from the car cockpit.
