St. Anne’s-Belfield is incredibly fortunate to have so many members of our community actively engaged and invested in the life of the School. Among the many ways to make a positive impact each year, philanthropic contributions help to ensure an exceptional educational experience for each student. We are grateful and thankful to once again celebrate those listed on the following pages for their generosity.

This year I am excited to announce a new direction for our annual giving program. In the past we have gratefully accepted two types of annual gifts to the School – “unrestricted” gifts via our Annual Fund and “restricted” gifts for specific programs and initiatives – both of which contribute to our annual operating budget. As of this school year, we are uniting these two philanthropic efforts under one program now known as the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield. This consolidation aims at simplifying the giving process for our donors, providing more choice in how your gifts are used, and reflects a more accurate picture of the full scope of your generosity and its impact on our community.

In addition to gifts made through our annual giving program, the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, the School celebrates those who make contributions through capital, endowed, and planned gifts as well. The Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield is our community’s annual giving program and top philanthropic priority. The Fund encompasses all gifts made to the School within a given fiscal year that provide operational support to annual and strategic priorities. This means anything—materials, equipment, people, programs, initiatives—for which we plan and budget for in the current school year.

As you’ll see in photos captioned “Your Impact in Action” on the following pages, there are so many amazing things happening at St. Anne’s-Belfield, not only in the classroom, but all around and behind the scenes. The Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield supports all of it and allows you, the donor, to choose from many specific ways you’d like for your gift to be used.

Donations to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield make up 13% of the School’s operating budget, touching every aspect of student life and enhancing every child’s experience. In the 2018 - 2019 school year, you and fellow generous donors provided $2.8 million for annual and strategic priorities, including proceeds from the Maroon & White Party to support faculty professional development. The St. Anne’s-Belfield School Endowment is comprised of invested funds established by the School community to support the operation and ongoing advancement of the School. As the School’s largest financial asset, the Endowment serves to impact and enhance our current student experience while also building a rich and sustainable future. Totaling $53,505,914 as of June 30, 2019, the School’s Endowment has continued a strong growth trajectory for more than a decade.

The Endowment consists of nearly 40 individual funds established for a variety of purposes, both donor-restricted funds created for scholarships, professional development, special programs, and operational uses, as well as funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments.

The Diana Edwards Smith Teaching Mastership was established to honor an outstanding faculty member each year and is the highest teaching award given in an academic year. During the 2019 graduation ceremony, the School recognized Upper School Humanities teacher Jon Shoup with this prestigious award. This endowed fund is a testament to the strong commitment of our School and School community to teaching excellence, and the impactful value of nurturing the student-faculty relationship.

As the recipient of The Diana Edwards Smith Teaching Mastership, Jon Shoup provided the opening Chapel of the 2019 - 2020 academic year to his fellow faculty members. His moving words reinforced and embodied the steadfast commitment of our faculty—and all who support St. Anne’s-Belfield School—to inspire and prepare the next generation of exemplary citizens and visionary leaders.

Across all grade levels, we push students to ask big questions, to take ownership of their learning, and to work collaboratively. This mission promotes a spirit of inquiry and asks students to think critically. In this way, St. Anne’s-Belfield has the capacity to challenge students’ perspectives. But equally as important, our community provides the support system that allows students to take on this difficult work.

By building relationships with students, by ensuring that every child is known well, we create an environment that helps them get comfortable with discomfort. If students feel trust, compassion, and love, they will be better equipped to persevere through the challenges posed by our educational mission. The work we do every day in the Learning Village and on the Greenway Rise, the work of building community and providing roots for our students, helps them feel capable of taking on these challenges.

The 1910 Society was founded in 2007 to recognize those benefactors who have named St. Anne’s-Belfield School in their estate plans. The members of the 1910 Society – alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends – understand their support will have great impact on the future of our students, faculty, and School.

1910 SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT – MYRON RIPLEY ‘86As an alumnus, why do you think it is important to support St. Anne's-Belfield School?St. Anne’s-Belfield changed my life forever. I say that any time anyone asks me about the School. I recognize that not every person who walks through the doors of Randolph Hall has the same experience, but for me it opened doors to an education of and for the world and to a group of people that would become the dearest people in my life forever. It is a place so special to me that I want it to grow and be sustainable for perpetuity. Truly, I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for my alma mater and thus, I want the next young teenager to have that same experience. Why did you choose to support the School through a planned gift? In life, many people have the opportunity to have a legacy with their children. That was not something that happened for me. So, in thinking about my legacy, I thought “how do I get to leave my mark?” A planned gift is one way in which I have the opportunity to define that legacy and help the next “Myron” experience a world class education in a loving environment. While not as big in number as many of our peer institutions, I see no reason why we can’t, as alumni, friends, or parents, “pay back and pay forward” the School that has been so good to us and our families so that we become the exemplary institution when it comes to philanthropic giving. What would you share with others who are considering a planned gift?I would say think about what the community of Charlottesville would be like without St. Anne’s-Belfield School. It seems impossible, but in this world there are no certainties. With that in mind, why not make a decision to “guarantee” a grand future for such a phenomenal place? For me, it wasn’t a hard decision. In fact, it was actually quite easy. I did it while relatively young so that as time passed, I knew that at least part of my legacy story could be written by me without any pressure. It also allowed me to have those conversations with my financial advisor and estate attorney to set the pathway in place that would ultimately allow me to “pay back” the School for everything it gave me. By doing this, the School can also make informed decisions about the future of St. Anne’s-Belfield.
