ORDER OF SERVICE

6 September 2015

1st Sunday in the Season of Creation

Planet Earth Sunday

WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE Wherever you are on your faith's journey, wherever you have come from and wherever you are going to, whatever you believe, whatever you do not believe, you are welcome here. Please join in the congregational responses printed in bold italics. Please stand if you are able, for the hymns and the offering prayer. We will sing the hymns without announcement. Please note your nearest fire exit. The church and hall have been earthquake strengthened. In an earthquake: drop, cover and hold.

GATHERING

We gather to celebrate the wonder of creation, who we are as Jesus followers in this vast universe, where our world hangs like a blue teardrop in an inky black sea, What is our earth that we should be mindful of it?

May the Spirit help us in our questioning.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN AA 41 ‘For the music of creation.’ Words: © 1992 Shirley Erena Murray. Music: Douglas Mews

For the music of creation, for the song your Spirit sings, for your sound’s divine expression, burst of joy in living things: God, our God, the world’s composer, hear us, echoes of your voice: music is your art, your glory, let the human heart rejoice!

Psalms and symphonies exalt you, drum and trumpet, string and reed, simple melodies acclaim you, tunes that rise from deepest need, hymns of longing and belonging, carols from a cheerful throat, lilt of lullaby and lovesong catching heaven in a note.

All the voices of the ages in transcendent chorus meet, worship lifting up the senses, hands that praise and dancing feet; over discord and division music speaks your joy and peace, harmony of earth and heaven, song of God that cannot cease!

WELCOME Kia ora tatou

Kia ora.

we give thanks

HYMN HIOS 45 ‘God of the northerlies’ Words & Music: ©1996 Bill Bennett

God of the northerlies, giver of grace; warm and enveloping, fill every place. Nurture the earth, water the seeds. God of the northerlies, fulfill our needs.

Christ of the easterlies, life-giving Son; earthly, renewing, in you we are one. Hope is reborn, changing our hearts. Christ of the easterlies, your peace impart.

Spirit of westerlies, gust though our lives; shaking, disturbing the schemes we devise. Teach us your truth, gift us your word, God of the westerlies, faithfulness stirred.

God of the southerlies, polar defined, crisply and sharply reshaping our minds. Challenge our ways, strengthen our wills. God of the southerlies, your love fulfills.

God of the north and the east, south and west, Giver, Protector, by whom we are blest, breeze through our lives, earnest and strong; Spirit, keep blowing and urge us along.

In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Stuart Nash and Damien O’Connor, and the people of their electorates of Napier and West Coast-Tasman. Here in Wellington, we pray for the leaders and people of Island Bay Presbyterian Church.

THE ST ANDREW’S SINGERS ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ Words: Folliott S. Pierpoint (1835-1917). Music: John Rutter

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FOR THE CREATION SEASON Adapted from more than one source, including words by Dorothy McRae McMahon

Leader: plain font, Left hand side of the congregation: italics, Right hand side of the congregation bold italics. All: bold plain font

We believe in Love, found in darkness, who parted the waters with a dream, fragrant as the ancient damask rose.

Who made from nothing – light; stars, moons, planets and loveliest earth;

Who ran wild with joy, creating mountains, waves, snowflakes, all different.

Who spun a web of shimmering life where creatures grew and changed,

flowered and put down roots, swam, chirped and flew,

ran, played and roared, talked – in many different languages –

wondered and dreamed; beings of astonishing variety,

each needing all the others, held in a delicate kinship.

Love saw that it was very good and laughed, and made some more.

We believe in Love who is found in waiting, patiently providing for each according to their need, nests for birds, caves for bats, burrows for kiwi. We believe in Love who is found in loneliness

who speaks in dawn birdsong, the grieving call of whales and through the symphony of stars and planets.

We believe in Love who is found in stillness, who walks in the world, awake and vulnerable, delighting and loving, bright as daffodils in the sunshine.

who grieves in the quiet beyond tears for scorched wilderness, stifled air, wounded forests, silenced voices, broken threads.

who names the truth and shoulders the weight of hoping

ALL: We believe we are called as the church to love the earth to live humbly in the web of relationships and announce a new way of living together as human beings on this earth.

THE COMMUNION: GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Spirit of God be with you And also with you

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up

Let us give thanks It is right to offer thanks and praise

It is indeed right to give thanks, with the whole created universe we praise the unfailing gift of life we give thanks that we have been made human.

Love came among us in Jesus Christ, Who makes all things new, not only renewing us, but bringing the promise of a renewed creation, a new heaven and a new earth, with reconciliation of all peoples.

Therefore with those who have walked this earth before us whether with faith or by other paths, with all those who share this planet with us now its vast oceans and tall mountains, its serene lakes and flowing rivers, stormy moments and myriad creatures, joyfully we say:

Holy, holy, holy, Love, Life, and Energy Earth and sea and sky and all that lives declare your presence and your glory.

Jesus is made known to us afresh each time in the breaking of bread; who, on the night he was handed over to be killed, when he was with his friends, much like us, took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

‘This is my body which is for you Do this to remember me

In the same way also the cup after supper saying ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this whenever you drink it, to remember me.’

Come now, disturbing spirit of God breathe on these fruits of the earth this juice of grape and bread from grain and make us one body in Christ.

May we who are baptised into his death walk in newness of life, that what is sown in secret may be seen in the light that what is sown in weakness may be raised in power. In Christ’s name we pray, AMEN

Distribution Communion is served by intinction. Please come to the front of the church and receive the bread, or a gluten-free cracker, taking a piece large enough to dip into the wine (silver cup) or grape juice (pottery cup). Then you’re invited to eat the bread dipped in wine or juice. Or, if you need to, remain in your seat to be served, just indicating to the server. If you don't wish to receive communion at all, just remain in your seat or you are welcome come and receive a blessing (hold your hands crossed in front).

HYMN ‘Mother Earth, our Mother birthing’

Words: Norman Habel © 2004 (alt). Tune: Praise my soul, the King of Heaven

Mother Earth, our mother birthing Ev’ry creature from the ground. Jesus too was body, breathing, Kin to all that’s green and brown. Celebrate with all creation: God has joined the web of life.

Sister Air, our sister lifting Ev’ry creature born with wing; Jesus shared the breath of forests, Breath that makes our spirits sing. Celebrate with all creation: God has joined the web of life.

Brother Water, brother pulsing Deep through ev’ry vein and sea, Jesus drank the very raindrops for our wine and in our tea. Celebrate with all creation: God has joined the web of life.

Father Fire, our father burning With the sacred urge to live. Jesus’ death completes the cycle, Bringing life with love to give. Celebrate with all creation: God has joined the web of life.

BLESSING AND SUNG AMEN

Format: Sir Lloyd Geering will read one of the articles listed (about 25 minutes) then Noel Cheer will conduct a 20 minute interview with Lloyd, teasing out some of the ideas in the lecture. The articles:

1) Is a New Reformation Possible? Published in Outlook (The Presbyterian weekly) on 25 September 1965 to mark Reformation Sunday 31 October 1965.

2) What does the Resurrection mean? Published in Outlook 2/4/1966 (also appears in Wrestling with God as Appendix one.

ISSUES OF CLIMATE CHANGE When? Over 3 Wednesdays beginning 7th October and the following Tuesday the 27th Time? An evening session at 7pm. Venue: Khandallah Presbyterian Church Hall

Session one: Wednesday 7th October -The science. Prof Tim Naish will lead a session on the science of Climate Change, discussing how the Greenhouse Gas phenomenon works, and how the GHG’s effect the warming of the planet. He will discuss feedback loops, evidence for these, and how they generally amplify climate change. He will draw on his own research in the Antarctic. He will also consider how reliable the observations, evidence and models are, given that the evidence spans large time frames. There will be time for your questions (which may be submitted in advance). Tim Naish is the Director of the Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University, New Zealand. In 2009, Professor Naish was awarded a New Zealand Antarctic Medal (NZAM) for services to Antarctic climate Science. From 2010 –13 he was a lead author in a working party report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Session Two: Wednesday 14th October – The international challenges Paris is the venue for the international conference in December to seek commitment from nations to reduce their Greenhouse gases. If we are to achieve zero carbon emissions by the end of the century, what targets do we as a community of nations need to set, and what milestones must we attain? What is our track record as a planet to date? Is there any urgency for the Paris meetings to grasp the consequences of failure? Is it really down to the US, China and the EU to make the play? How effective is the UN as an institution as the vehicle for these challenges? Is there any special role for a small nation like NZ, or do we just tag along? Kennedy Graham is an experienced diplomat who can present a valuable perspective of the national and international issues before us. As a Member of Parliament he is well informed from the inside, and has chosen the Green party because of his commitment to the issues before us. (He will not be engaged in a party political broadcast.) Kennedy has a BCom, a MA in International Relations, and a PhD from VIC. He has Fulbright and Fletcher scholarships, and a McCarthy Fellowship.

Session Three: Wed 21st October Will screen the documentary: Thin Ice

Session Four: Tuesday 27th October – Challenges moving to zero carbon Guy Salmon will consider some of the challenges around moving to the zero carbon goal. He will consider some sustainability issues for big cities, and whether the business as usual economy is adequate to the task. IF BAU is the cause of the issue rather than its solution, what other economic options are available and how do we transition there? Is there a need for a values driven approach to take the priority of shaping our response, compared with seeking a technological fix, or of letting economical drivers pave the way? As chief executive of the Maruia Society and later the Ecologic Foundation, Guy has focused on the challenge of integrating economic and environmental perspectives in decision-making. The series is facilitated by John Howell, a retired minister, who has had a long interest in environmental ethics.
