Year 11 students are also in the process of deciding where they will study next year as they progress into Post 16, applications for both internal and external students are looking very positive and the number of students who have expressed an interest in our new innovative pathway in Post 16 the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) is very healthy. Further details about the IBCP can be found on page 5 and it is not too late to apply for Post 16 at The Leigh Academy, please contact Mrs Valerie Ludlow for further information. In Modules 3 and 4 we have re-launched our Behaviour for Learning policy and introduced our League of Excellence, further details on page 10. A reminder that we have a clear policy for the use of mobile phones and devices in the Academy. Students may use their mobile phones before the start of lessons and at the end of the day. At break and lunch times students may use their devices in the restaurant and outside. Students should only be using mobile devices in lessons at the direction of the teacher and to aid learning. If a student breaches the academy policy, then the phone or device will be confiscated and will be held in a secure place in the main Academy office. Mobile phones and devices will then need to be collected by parents or carers in accordance with the Academy policy, which can be viewed in full on our website. We are pleased to confirm that teaching and learning across the Learning Areas continues to improve, with 90% of lessons rated as Good or better using Ofsted criteria. In Modules 3 and 4 we have completed staff professional development on using ‘Thinking Hard’ strategies which aim to stretch and challenge our students to think in greater depth. The strategies used by staff are intended to really take the students out of their comfort zone and make them work harder and think harder with the resources given to them. The techniques practised in lessons will help them gain a more thorough understanding of content which is obviously essential given the challenging demands of the new curriculum. I am proud of our staff who are giving up their Easter Break to ensure that extra revision sessions are run for our Year 11 and Post 16 students and we are confident of the positive effect this will have on student results this Summer. It is one year since The Leigh was accredited as an International Baccalaureate World School. We are delivering IB diplomas to our Post 16 students who are enjoying the challenge of learning through cycles of inquiry, action and reflection. We are therefore planning to introduce the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in Year 7 from September. It will provide the framework for the curriculum at The Leigh Academy, throughout Years 7-8. It provides the academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between the traditional subjects they study and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. The Learner Profile at the centre of The International Baccalaureate programmes identifies the attitudes and attributes that we are seeking to develop in Leigh Academy students: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective. We have appointed a IB MYP coordinator who is working closely with the other Trust academies to ensure that all staff will be trained and ready to deliver the programme in English, Maths, Humanities and Modern Foreign Languages to our new Year 7 students from September with all other subjects following in September 2019. We all wish you a restful and enjoyable Easter Break and we are very much looking forward to Module 5 and hopefully some sunshine! Mrs Julia Collins Principal

On Thursday 18th January, The Leigh Academy hosted the second Leigh Academies Trust Spelling Bee. We were joined by Wilmington Academy and Milestone Academy. The Leigh was represented by the 2017 Trust Spelling Bee champions, Chaucer’s Conor Smith, Morgan Glass and Bryn Glass. The students had to spell difficult words including ‘machete’, ‘mayonnaise’ and ‘mischievous’. The winning team had to secure 10 correct spellings. The Leigh and Milestone teams both got ten correct spellings, leading to a tense tie-breaker round. The winning spelling of ‘Bonsai’ went to Milestone Academy, who won the 2018 Trust Spelling Bee. Thank you to all of the teams who participated and to the parents and carers who supported each team.

Virtual Reality Headsets

As we continue to drive students’ progress through outstanding Teaching & Learning the Business Studies Learning Area were fortunate to use the Leigh Trust Virtual Reality Headsets last module. Students were able to visit a variety of chocolate factories across the world and follow the item through the production line to the shop shelf. Students enjoyed the experience from Year 10 through to Year 13. Overall the comments from the students were positive. They liked looking at the actual scenario itself and seeing the factories, and other aspects too. The use of the VR headsets allows students to see and experience situations that had been previously inaccessible. The headsets will motivate the students like nothing before.

On Saturday 10th February 2018, 43 students from The Leigh Academy travelled to Katschberg in Austria for a ski trip in the ski resort of ‘Mauterndorf’. After a stomach churning ferry crossing and a coach journey through France, Germany and in to Austria, students were greeted by a huge down fall of snow which made for excellent skiing conditions for the entire week. 32 of the 43 students that went on the trip had not skied before, but by the end of the 5 days skiing had made excellent progress. All were skiing from the very top of the mountain by the end of the week and the majority being able to negotiate black (expert) runs. This year we also had 16 students on the trip that are currently studying GCSE PE. They were able to progress to a high enough level to perform all of the skills within the skiing section of the GCSE specification and took part in a filmed slalom competition at the end of the week. This will ensure that they achieve an excellent grade in skiing within GCSE PE. Once again there were no injuries on the trip and all students had a great time skiing and additionally, taking part in the evening activities such as 10 pin bowling, swimming with flumes and a pizza evening. Mr Pickett, Miss Marshall and the PE team are now preparing for the summer sports trip to La Manga, Spain in July where students will be able to take part in a wide variety of sporting activities.

School Security-External Doors

During Module 4 the academy has invested in additional locks to the external doors to our already secure site. This will ensure that students are learning in a safe environment when inside the academy building. This means that all external doors will now only open with staff ID cards. The doors will remain locked until 7:30am to students unless they are opened by a staff member. Students that do arrive before this time can wait undercover in the warm between the two sets of doors at main reception. Students found to be forcing the doors open will be billed for any repairs that may occur.

Post 16-International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme

Following on The Leigh’s accreditation as an IB ‘World School’ in July, we are delivering 9 IB diplomas; Business

Management, Computer Science, English Lit/Lang, Film Studies, Global Politics, IT in Global Society, Mathematical

Studies, Psychology & Social and Cultural Anthropology this year to Post 16 students & we will be able to expand

our IB offer to include Geography & Economics from September 2018. The IB Career-related Programme is designed

for students aged 16-19. Students who follow this pathway undertake a minimum of two IB Diploma courses, a

core consisting of four components (personal & professional skills, service learning, reflective project and language

development) and a career related study such as a BTEC qualification. This combination of courses develops

students academically through the rigour of the IB diplomacy & provides practical, real world approaches to

learning whist the CP Core helps students to develop skills & competencies required for lifelong learning. If you

would like to find out more about studying the IBCP at The Leigh, then the IBCP brochure is on The Leigh Academy

website. If you would like to apply for a place in our Post 16 for September 2018 then please do so via our academy

website or contact [email protected].

Science Trip

On 22nd February Years 12 and 13 Physics students enjoyed a day out at The Science Museum. The eighteen students enjoyed a day in which they attended three Space events which linked to the new A level specification. The purpose of the visit was to inspire and engage students, as well as help prepare them for their exams. Some highlights of the day included a virtual reality Tim Peake Space Descent, something you can never teach in a classroom, a 4D film of the Legend of Apollo covering the history of Space travel, ‘A Beautiful Planet’ – the Earth from Space, a 3D film which will support the students learning by teaching them about our solar system and the impact of humans on the Earth. A fun & informative day for all.

Westminster Trip

Post 16 History and Politics students were invited by Gareth Johnson MP, to visit the Houses of Parliament in January. Whilst taking a tour of the Great Hall, House of Commons and the House of Lords our fantastic guide talked us through the history of the building and its role at the centre of our democracy. It was a surprise to see the size of the House of Commons, which looks a lot bigger on the TV and to understand how ‘divisions’, which decide the laws of our country take place. Government students were interested to see the additions of Hansard, containing records of parliamentary debates and they have used these online records since in their research for their political engagement coursework. At the end of the official tour we met Nathaniel Forcella-Burton, working as an intern at the Houses of Parliament, who took groups of us through the tunnels to Portcullis house, where the majority of MPs have their offices and saw many MPs at lunch, including Frank Field MP.

We followed up our visit to Parliament in March when we welcomed Gareth Johnson (MP) to our academy. He spoke to us about the role of an MP and answered some tricky questions posed by Year 12 students on local, national and international issues from the traffic issues around Dartford to human rights abuses in Myanmar.

Oxford University Trip

Leigh Aspire Oxford University Visit – Year 9 On Wednesday 21st February, twenty-three Year 9 students from The Leigh, Longfield, Mascalls, Stationers’ Crown Woods, Strood and Wilmington Academies, participated in a visit to two of Oxford University’s colleges: Mansfield and St Hugh’s. Mansfield College is one of Oxford University’s smaller colleges, admitting around 75 undergraduate students per year, accommodating approximately two hundred students in total. The magnificent Victorian buildings were completed in 1889. Upon arrival, Helen Brooks, Oxford Admissions Manager, met and escorted us to a lecture theatre, where she delivered a presentation consisting of an overview of the collegiate system, degree programme options, the different types of societies available to students, financial support and how learning and teaching is delivered at Oxford. During the Q&A session, we were joined by four undergraduate students, two of whom had attended state schools. Each Oxford undergraduate explained what subjects they had chosen for their GCSEs and A-levels and elaborated on the reasons why they decided to choose these subjects. After the Q&A session, we were split up into two groups and taken on a tour of Mansfield College. We were shown student accommodation, the café and the library. The tour finished at Mansfield’s refectory, where we were served lunch. Students commented that they had a great day which had opened their minds to university.

World Book Day

Thursday 1st March was World Book Day. Despite adverse weather conditions, staff and students trudged through conditions similar to the Mountains of Moria and made it in to celebrate our Lord of the Rings themed World Book Day. This year, The Leigh decided to turn our eye (Sauron’s eye) to middle earth and celebrate the great works of J.R.R Tolkien. Students learned about Tolkien’s writing during tutor time and were encouraged to try reading some of his work. Staff dressed as dwarfs, hobbits, elves and orcs to bring the wonderful fantasy characters to life for our students. All students received a £1 World Book Day token and were encouraged to go and read something new. What is your favourite book and why? Mrs Adams

In our continuous drive at the Leigh Academy to push our learners to achieve the very best, we have made an exciting new addition to our current rewards system.

The League of Excellence

The League of Excellence is a holistic approach to rewarding our learners based on the major key aspects of their school lives. These aspects are as follows:

Learners’ average attitude to learning score across all of their subjects. Learners’ attendance for the module. Learners’ reward points subtracting any negative behaviour points they may have received.

The highest ranked students in each year group in each college will deservedly receive their rewards ranging from vouchers for local retail outlets to reward trips to a number of different activities. A huge well done to the following learners who are the top 3 students for each college across the Academy thus far. Brunel

Spanish Trip

On Thursday 22nd February, Year 13 Spanish students, along with their teachers Miss. Stroud and Ms. Picazo-Chalmers, enjoyed a cultural evening of “tapas” and “Flamenco” in London. We left the Academy in order to catch the train to London were we first went to “Mesón Don Felipe”, where students sampled several “tapas” dishes, including the famous “Tortilla de Patatas” and “Calamares”. Students practised ordering food in Spanish and asking about different dishes. After dinner, we took the tube and we went to Sadler’s Wells Theatre to enjoy a Flamenco show, where students enjoyed this very traditional and famous Spanish dance. It included several well-known artists, among them “La Chana” the most famous flamenco dancer in the past 30 years! None of the students had ever experienced a show of this kind and were thrilled at having seen it.

Ms Picazo-Chalmers

DANCE

The GCSE dancers have had a busy couple of months! They participated in the Big Dance Off regional heats in January and came 11th out of 22. It was a fantastic day of wonderful performances and imaginative pieces. The students worked exceptionally hard in rehearsals to improve and polish their work (which was a last minute entry before Christmas). I was very proud of their effort, their performance and the professional way they represented the school. We have also had a guest professional dancer from Rambert Dance Company in to work with the students on a piece currently on tour called Linha Curva. Students learnt repertory directly from the piece and are currently working on their own version for a performance in module 6. Regina from Rambert commented that the students pick up of the material and performance of key extracts was the best she had seen in any school.

Healthy Minds

The Leigh Academy welcomed BBC Breakfast to interview students and staff about the importance of teaching resilience and life skills alongside their academic subjects. The students selected all have the Healthy Minds lessons as part of their weekly curriculum to help improve their resilience, self-confidence and ensure they have a thorough knowledge of the skills required to make the right choices in life.

The BBC based their report around the topic of children's happiness and whether it is important to ensure academic success. The new education secretary, Damien Hinds has highlighted early in his new role that ‘soft skills’ are essential learning in schools. He said the “hard reality is that teaching children how to build character resilience and workplace skills is crucial for a thriving economy”.

The students’ excellent comments were demonstrated on BBC Breakfast News, BBC South East News and later in the day on BBC Radio Kent. The news reporters interviewed students and staff about the importance of healthy minds and how we ensure building resilience in young people is part of the curriculum a The Leigh Academy.

The students talked about how the Healthy Minds programme covers topics including how to think about building a career and family as they move from ‘school to life’, the importance of developing healthy relationships with family and friends, being aware of the dangers of alcohol and drugs, sex education and how the media influences teenagers’ decisions. Each of these PSHE topics are covered in great detail and allows debates and an opportunity to discuss these important aspects of life.

Post 16 Employability Skills Day

A number of our year 13 students at The Leigh Academy were treated to a session on employability skills delivered by Peter Cobrin.

Peter has a wealth of experience in education but more recently he has been an enthusiastic Ambassador promoting the Higher Level Apprenticeships. It is really important to give our students the critical skills required for the world of work.

Peter delivered an interactive session during the morning of the 19th of January 2018 to a group of students who are considering careers in ICT or business. Peter has a wealth of contacts and may be able to link some of our students directly with employers.

The majority of the students had met Peter in year 12 when he presented to them getting them prepared for their long term choices of looking for an apprenticeship. The student’s feedback was exceptionally positive. Hopefully a few of them will be looking forward to completing their Post 16 studies and entering the workplace in the Summer.

Thank you again to Peter who has been very supportive of the Leigh Academies Trust.

After enjoying a lunch courtesy of BDO, the accountancy & business advisors, the students were then taken to the Sky Garden at the top of the 'walkie talkie' building on Fenchurch Street. The spectacular views allowed the students to see the great city of London and the vast potential career opportunities available to young, ambitious and hard-working students. A fabulous day was had by all and hopefully this glimpse of what the future may hold will motivate the students to achieve even bigger and better things! Top Tip: Steve said the one thing that separates people who come for interview and are successful in securing a job with BDO can be summed up in one word - attitude! Take note everyone....

On Thursday 15th March, nine Year 7 students took part in this year's BBC School Report. World Maths Day

All Leigh Academy students were fortunate enough to compete in this year’s World Maths Day. World Maths Day is a free, fun, online competition with nearly 4 million students worldwide participating. It is one of the world’s largest global educational events aimed at lifting numeracy standards in a meaningful way. The competition is about solving problems, completing quizzes within a set time period and applying mathematical understanding to other areas of the curriculum. The event is appropriate for students aged 4-18 across schools worldwide.

A huge thank you to all the students who were involved in the activities during World Maths Day and to the parents and staff who encouraged them to participate. We hope everyone enjoyed in uniting all the colleges in learning mathematics for the day. We would like to congratulate everyone on their achievements. All of the students were excited by taking part and there was a great sense of achievement.

As many students participated I hope that they all have gained some additional maths skills, such as mental maths within a time limit and the hunger to succeed. This means that they will have the ability to finish tests much quicker if they continue to develop these skills as it will help them in their future life. It has also been proven that mental maths helps with emotional health which means that developing new brain skills helps stave off depression and anxiety. Dr. Ahmad Hariri states that the brain’s ability to make numerical calculation in real time helps people to regulate anger and fear.

Bikeability

Students & staff of The Leigh were fortunate

enough to have access to the Department of

Transport’s Bikeability Course. Bikeability is today’s

cycle training programme. It’s like cycling

proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical

skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s

roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and

confidence for all kinds of cycling.

There are three Bikeability levels, each designed to

improve cycling skills, no matter what is known

already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees from the

basics of balance and control, all the way to

planning and making an independent journey on

busier roads. Mrs Protheroe, a Learning Support

assistant at The Leigh, who also took part in the

course commented on how it has ‘rejuvenated her

passion and confidence for cycling on the road’.

Bikeability is the only government-recognised

cycle training scheme, underpinned by national

standards. Cycle training providers delivering

Bikeability must use professional National

Standard Instructors and operate within the

government quality assurance system.

Bikeability is therefore a quality mark for cycle

training, identifying cycle training delivered to

Former Students Sporting Success

The PE Learning Area prides itself on creating sporting opportunities for students to experience and develop their skills in a variety of sports. Over the years The Leigh has been fortunate to have students come through our doors that not only are outstanding students academically but are also world class athletes. We have been contacted recently by three ex-students wishing to pass on their thanks for the help and support we had shown over the years.

Destiny Field

Destiny left us after her GCSEs to study Sport and Law at Worthing College. She soon put her National Rugby League success she had with The Leigh to good use when she was selected for their elite female rugby programme. It is with great pleasure to inform you that she has been signed by Harlequins Ladies and in the near future will be playing in the Tyrrell's Premier 15s which is the domestic Women's rugby competition. She is in safe hands there too as the head coaches are Gary Street & Karen Findlay. Street famously led England Women to the 2014 Women's rugby World Cup, while Findlay has 6 premiership titles to her name alongside 85 caps for Scotland.

Beau Farrance Although Beau’s sporting career started with rugby and he continues to do well in this sport he soon realised he also had the ability to perform outstandingly well in Judo. Although Beau is still only 17 he currently holds the U18 Great Britain Gold medal. He also came 2nd in the British U21 Championships in Sheffield recently. Beau can be found travelling the UK in competitions and travels as far as Lommel & Walsall. We have high hopes for Beau in whatever sport he chooses & we wish him every success.

Leah Goss Leah’s sporting success has been well documented whilst she was a student here at The Leigh. She continues to enjoy her studies at university where she is also part of an elite Netball programme. She continues to play for the Super League Netball Team Surrey Storm and has been made the captain of the U21 Surrey Storm Netball Team.

It is always difficult to know what artists are really thinking about when they make their work. Usually we can only speculate as their intentions after the piece is made. We have been so lucky in Art to have been able to talk to a practising artist about his work. Armando Bergallo is an internationally known artist from Uruguay, currently living and working in France. He kindly agreed to speak to Sam Morrison and Year 13 Fine art students via Skype. Sam wrote a series of questions asking about the ideas that underpin Armando’s work. Armando was fantastic and gave real insight about his work and practice; inspiration and aspiration. We were also able to discuss students work and listen to Armando’s advice to develop and enhance their work. Our students were enthused and very grateful to have the wonderful opportunity to speak as artists to another artist. We would like to thank Armando for his time, passion and insight.
