New York State 2022-2023 Budget Fails to Provide NewInvestments in Afterschool

The Network is alarmed at the lack of increased support in afterschool programs in theFY2022–2023 budget. The Network is glad to see the expansion of afterschool accessthrough school districts and child care investments; however, afterschool providers inunderserved communities saw no new funding to manage increased costs and demands. The FY2022–2023 budget failed to provide bridge funding to begin to align statereimbursement rates with the true costs of afterschool programming. The budget did include new funding that can be leveraged by school districts to expand orestablish afterschool programs. The Recover from COVID School Grants (RECOVS) is a$100 million investment over the next two years for new school grants to address studentlearning loss and trauma caused by COVID-19. The creation of afterschool, summer, andextended school day programs are named as allowable expenses in this grant opportunity. Afterschool providers are well-positioned to address New York’s shortage of quality care andgrowing achievement gap by keeping students engaged, learning, and connected. Stateinvestments that value afterschool programs and build resilience in their students are longoverdue. Interested in learning more? Read our Final Budget Analysis for 2022-2023.
