SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL Montana Thespians

A message from University

of Montana’s Director of

Theatre and Dance

a depth of understanding

that the digital age often

overlooks. Today’s society

needs individuals who

know how to say what

cannot be said. The arts

teach these skills.

~Mike Monsos

Director, School of

Theatre & Dance

I am all too aware of the

many different and

difficult choices with

which students are faced

when choosing a school as

well as an area of study. In

today’s climate, the arts are

often overlooked as viable

career paths--but in reality,

the arts are more vibrant

and integral to society than

ever before. The skills and

training you will acquire in

the arts will prepare you

for life in a way you may

not have even yet realized.

Today’s job market

requires creativity, problem

solving, communication,

teamwork, and confidence.

Today’s world requires

commitment, passion, and

SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL Montana Thespians

About Us Montana Thespians joined the International Thespian Society and was established in 1973

under the direction of Lloyd Mickelson.

Recognizing and rewarding

excellence in high school theatre Lloyd Mickelson was the first state director from Billings Sr. In the beginning, there wasn’t a state convention. Plays were brought to the University of Montana to perform at the interscholastic in May, along with golf, track, and speech & debate. It was called a play festival and was under the auspicious of The Montana High School Association. In the spring of 1973 we withdrew from the Montana High School Association and became our own entity, Montana Thespians. It took a few years but the first Montana Thespians State Festival was Dec. 15 & 16 1978 at Sentinel High School in Missoula, MT.

OUR VISION WITH THE EDUCATIONAL

THEATRE ASSOCIATION (EdTA)

• To honor student Achievment in

theatre and enrich their educational

experience.

• Support Educators by providing

professional development,

networking opportunities, resources,

and recognition.

• Influence public opinion and policy-

makers that theatre education is

essential and builds life skills.

OUR MISSION

Montana Thespians, an affiliate of the

educational theatre association, strives to

positively impact the lives of our youth in Montana through theatre education,

advocacy, networking opportunities, and

community building resources.

About The Event

“Being on the Montana State Thespian Board means a lot to me. When I was a sophomore I was diagnosed with epilepsy and so I was kicked out of basketball. The only other acticity I belonged to was theater. So, being a thespian is important because I found this weird, yet inviting family. I think I wanted to be on the board because now I am even closer to this family. I can help others find Drama. Which might be the best fit for them, as it was for me.” ~ Renee Kaldor

Montana Thespian Festival Each year at the beginning of February, Montana Thespians

organizes their annual State Thespian Festival. Hosted by the

College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of

Montana (UM). This annual event is a great opportunity for

students and theatre educators in Montana to travel to Missoula,

perform, practice, and learn with others across the state. Not

only does this festival empower the youth of Montana with the

ability to practice the arts but it also allows Montana Thespians

to positively impact our state. Many of these students go on to

attend college with an appreciation for theatre and have gained

many like skills because of the local theatre programs that

Montana Thespians support.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Montana Thespian Merit Scholarship

· We offer two of these scholarships at $500.00 each. They are

given to the students pursueing a career outside of theatre.

Montana Thespian Scholarship

· We offer two of these scholarships at $1,000.00 each. They are

awarded to students pursueing a career in the performing arts.

High School Theatre Educator Scholarship

· We offer this sholarship to defray costs for the National Thespian

Conference.

OBJECTIVE

This festival is a celebration of theatre and the performing

arts. We come together to find truth in our work. Truth is at

the heart of performing, it is what we see when we do it well.

Whether we are behind the scenes or onstage, we see the

truth when we love what we do. This festival is about being

surrounded by our peers who love and support our practice;

while rejoicing.

VENUE & ATTENDEES

“Being a part of Thespians has been an honor within itself, but being President of Montana Thespians has been one of the

greatest opportunities I’ve had in my life. Being President has allowed me to take something more out of theatre and

community then I ever thought was possible. The fact alone that I credit theatre to being a fundamental asset in developing m y

personality and my aspirations has driven me to open up our communities and ultimately share our love of theatre. There is

most certainly no better place to share our love for theatre and for each other than at Montana State Thespian Festival.

Thespians Festival and theatre in general can have lasting impacts on nearly anyyone and there are many out there who wish

to share those impacts and cause the same effect for others. I like to think of myself as one of those people and being Presi dent

has given me the chance to do just that.”

State Student Officers

The School of Theatre & Dance at the University of Montana is a

rich and rewarding program for anyone seeking a career in the arts.

Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre

(NAST), our faculty and staff bring years of professional and

educational experience to our classrooms and productions,

providing incredible opportunities for students in each and every

year of the program. The size of our School guarantees numerous

opportunities for students to work both in front of and behind the

scenes from the day they arrive until the time they graduate.

Students enjoy small classes and individualized training in spacious

and well-equipped studios, shops, and performance venues. In the

best tradition of academic theatre training, our program successfully

balances high-quality productions with challenging and exciting

coursework. Students also have the unique opportunity to gain

professional experiences with the Montana Repertory Theatre, a

nationally touring Equity company, and CoMotion Dance Project, a

regionally touring and teaching dance company, both of which are

based in the School of Theatre & Dance.

Attendees of this festival include approximately 350 students with

theatre educators. Among those 350, a select few are elected to

represent the student body as State Thespian Officers .

that celebrates the work of theatre educators and

theatre students across the state of Montana. Each

year at the University of Montana, we celebrate

the role of theatre arts in every student’s

education. Research has shown there is a strong

link between achievement and arts education.

The arts:

• Improve (according to research) academic

achievement and test scores.

• Develop verbal and nonverbal

communication skills.

• Increase concentration and comprehension

through engagement.

• Use the senses, stimulate emotions, and

intellect.

• Increase cognitive involvement with subjects.

• Provide alternative methods of assessment.

• Provide avenues of achievement for students

who might otherwise not be successful.

• Provide motivation for students to stay in

school.

• Enlighten our understanding, making it

deeper and more comprehensive.

• Enhance other curriculum areas.

years later, I received two scholarships at the festival. It was amazing to be honored by the University of Montana and by Montana

State thespian festival.” ~ Jessica Goldade
