KEY-BOARD

The key-board of a computer is the chief input device. So, it needs proper care on your part. Any spilled liquid, crumbs and every day dust can damage it. If the

parts under the key-tops get dirty, the keys may not work properly. So, observe the following steps in this regard:

1. If the key-board clean and tidy. You can use a

small vacuum cleaner to get the dust out of it.

2. Never take your key-board apart from the system.

3. It is safe to buy and use a keyboard-rest in front of it.

4. Unfold the feet of the key-board before you start using it.

USING THE KEY-BOARD

The key-board of a computer is like the key-board of a typewriter, we know. But it has some extra keys as well. It has 101 keys in all. These keys are divided into six different groups as under: 1. Alphabet Keys. 2. Number Keys. 3. Function Keys 4 Arrow Keys. 5. Numeric Key-pad. 6. Special Keys

1. Alphabet Key

These keys have 26 letters of the English alphabet marked on them in capital letters. They are not

there in the alphabetical order. They are arranged in order

to enable the operator to type the text with a good speed.

Apart from the 26 letters, punctuation marks

(Comma, full-stop etc.) also form a part of the alphabet keys. At the bottom of the alphabet keys you can see an extra long key. It is used to leave some blank space after typing each word. This word separates every two words from each other. This long key is called the SPACE BAR.

2. Number Keys

The keys are marked with the digits from 0 to 9.

They are used to type numerals like 8, 275, 73564 etc.

The numbers of keys are there above the alphabet keys. They are in there natural order 1,2,3…9,0. Along with these digits there are some symbols-one on top of each digit. These symbols are:

25222

~, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *, (,) , _ , + , \ , |.

When you simply press any of the number keys, its number shows itself on the monitor. But when you press a number key

with the SHIFT KEY pressed as well, the symbol marked above

that number appears on the monitor. For example-

(a) If you press the 5-key, the monitor will show the digit 5.

(b) But if you press the 5-key along with the shift key, the monitor will show the symbol %.

3. FUNCTION KEYS:

These keys are there on top of the key-board above the number keys. They are marked F1, F2, F3 ……………F12. Each of these of keys is used for a special function/Job.

You will learn, in due course, how to use the function keys.

For the time being, you should only know that function keys are used to do special jobs like changing the text into boldface/italics and for selecting various tools.

4. NUMERIC KEY-PAD:

This is the second set of number keys on the key board of a computer. It is there on the rightmost part of the key- board. The keys of this set have digits marked on them in rows from the bottom upwards. The zero(0) in this set has a

transverse line crossing it. It helps us to avoid confusion

between zero and letter O. The Zero-key of the number keys

doesn’t have this transverse line.

used

The numeric key-pad is used to feed mathematical data as the

keys of this pad have numbers in a compact form just as the

keys on a calculator have. They are not in the scattered

form as the number keys above the alphabet keys of the key- board are. So, it is for easier for the operator to do figure-work using this key board.

Apart from digits, the numeric key-pad has some mathematical

symbols also marked on its keys. They include the multiplication sign (*), Subtraction sign (-), addition sign(+), division sign (/) and the decimal point(.).

Besides, the key-pad has arrows marked on its 2-key, 4-key,

6-key and 8-key. They a for the convenience of the operator when he needs to do figure-work.

5. ARROW KEYS:

These arrow keys are there on the key-board just to the left of the numeric key-pad at the bottom. They are only four in

number. These keys have arrows marked on them showing the

four direction. They are used to:-

the cursor to where we want it to move. Move the selected text/object to the desired place on the monitor. In this chapter, we have studied five types of keys. We shall learn about the special keys in the following chapter.

IMPORTANT SPECIAL KEYS: KEY BOARD

1.CAPS LOCK KEY

When we want to type some text in capital letters, we press this key and then type the text. It remains locked in

the working position. An indicator shows it through green

light. That is why it is called a lock.

2.SHIFT KEY

This special key always works in combination with other

keys. The keyboard has two shift keys. We can use whichever

is handy.

1. The alphabet keys, when pressed normally, type small letters of the alphabet. When we want to type a letter

in its capital form, we first press the shift key and then the letter key, keeping the shift key in the working position. As a result, the letter gets typed in its capital form.

2. When we are to type a symbol marked on a number key,

we first press the shift key and then the number key. As a result, the symbol gets typed. But if the shift key is not pressed, only the numeral will get typed on

the monitor.

3.ENTER KEY

This key is the most important . Tell the PC that you have finished your command/instruction and that it should now be carried out.

The Enter Key is also used as a Return Key.

4.BACKSPACE KEY

This key is like an eraser. It is the rightmost key in the row of number keys and is there above the enter key.

6.DELETE KEY

This key is the leftmost key in the lowermost row of the

key-group just above the arrow-keys.
