Investment in infrastructure will be the key

to South Australian racing’s resurgence

after the sport’s regulatory body made

two significant prize-money increases in

as many days and waits on further good news in

today’s unveiling of the state budget.

Thoroughbred Racing South Australia

yesterday announced it would boost the SABOIS

bonus scheme, similar to the successful VOBIS,

BOBS and QTIS schemes offered in other states,

to $2 million among a range of modifications

aimed at incentivising owners to race horses in

the state, particularly locally bred ones.

The move comes after TRSA on

Wednesday returned regular prize-money

purses to more than the pre-Covid-19 levels

after strong wagering results since the onset

The prize-money and SABOIS

increases come into effect from next Tuesday.

TRSA chief executive Nick Redin says the changes to SABOIS was part

of a long-term strategy to increase horse numbers and help grow betting

turnover and returns to industry participants.

“We have worked very hard to grow our field sizes. We are up, on

average, a runner per race at metropolitan level and we are up .2 a race at

provincial level for the financial year to date,” Redin told ANZ Bloodstock

News yesterday in an extensive interview.

“Our numbers were up the backend six months of last financial year,

so it is really about maintaining that and growing that further and allowing

us to expand the number of races we conduct on Wednesday back out to

eight ultimately.

“Once we achieve that, then the aim is to expand Sunday back out to eight.

We have had to reset and we’ve made some changes to our programming,

which has had the desired result, and now it’s really about growing the horse

numbers in the state so we can grow back out to where we need to be.”

Prize-money in South Australia had been dwarfed by leading Australian

racing jurisdictions, NSW and Victoria, leading to an exodus of horses and

trainers in recent years which had decimated the state’s field sizes.

Redin revealed that 300 horses had left the state in the past two and

a half years and TRSA was undertaking a number of initiatives in a bid to

reverse the trend.

“There were trainers we lost interstate like Lloyd Kennewell, Phillip

Stokes setting up in VIctoria rather than expanding here and one (Mark

Minervini) went to Newcastle and a couple of others left, but now it is

about growing our population.

“We have some terrific family training partnerships over here now

with the Jollys and Sue and Jason Jaensch just forged a team and obviously

Leon Macdonald with his son-in-law Andrew Gluyas.

“Those training partnerships are coming through and Tony and Calvin

McEvoy have divided Melbourne and SA between them, so we have got

the next generation of trainers coming through.

“There’s also Will Clarken and Ryan

Balfour, Michael Hickmott and Travis Doudle, these sort of guys coming

through, and we’re giving them some certainty that they can grow their business.”

One issue which has held South Australian racing back has been the

lack of stabling but Redin says that is changing.

“There are 90 boxes going to be built on-course at Morphettville, so

that will see a big expansion of the on-course facilities at Morphettville,”

says Redin.

“At the moment, Will Clarken is the only trainer on course and he only

has about 24 boxes. So the SAJC is building 90, there are more being built

out at Gawler, and there are plans to build another 30 once they are full. So

we are certainly adding to the capacity to take the amount of horses given

the whole expansion of the SABOIS scheme is about the next generation

coming through.

“By the time they are ready to race, the facilities will be there to train them.”

Industry stakeholders are also hopeful that today’s South Australian

budget will outline more investment in racing infrastructure around the state.

Murray Bridge’s new track, which was built on a greenfield site, is one

of the shining lights of the local thoroughbred industry and the facility has

been earmarked to house more horses and trainers, but TRSA will require

government investment to help fund the project.

The investment cycle, Redin hopes, will lead to TRSA being able to

sustainably increase prize-money levels longer term to at least keep, or

close, the gap with other jurisdictions.

“I think every state always wants to increase the prize-money and

we would certainly like to get all of our prize-money levels up across the

board,” he said.

“If we can keep our field sizes up and grow our wagering revenue, it will

enable us to provide not only that, but continue to invest in infrastructure

and facilities in the state, so the trainers have the facilities they need to

train from and the prize-money is sufficient to continue to attract new

owners and get existing owners to buy more horses.”

Redin added: “I think we’ve seen in these results, it is pretty positive

over here at the moment. Everybody’s got through Covid.

“We’ve kept the whole show going over here, so to speak, and I think

we’re about to reap the rewards from that. Field sizes are up, our wagering

revenues are holding up, so we are very well placed to embark on an

aggressive growth strategy over here.”

Hayes welcomes SABOIS changesSA Thoroughbred Breeders chair Sam Hayes, meanwhile, lauded

TRSA’s increased support of SABOIS and he believes the changes could

incentivise the state’s broodmare owners and stallion farms to undertake

a joint venture to lure well-credentialed stallions to South Australia.

Hayes, who has shuttler Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz), Valentia (Fastnet

Rock) and Ambidexter (Commands) at his Cornerstone Stud in the Barossa

Valley, says standing stallions in South Australia had been “marginal now

for a few years” but he hopes yesterday’s SABOIS announcement can go

some way to changing that.

“The SABOIS announcement coupled with the prize-money going

back up to pre-Covid levels, certainly from an SA Breeders’ perspective,

really is fantastic,” Hayes told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“As an industry, we had probably under invested in SABOIS over the

last five to ten years and it needed a large hit to get it back up to being

competitive again and, to TRSA’s credit, the quantum in which they have

increased it is meaningful.

“I think it will have a positive impact on investment in our state.

It had to be large to make a difference and it is, so we are pleased with

that.”

Will Clarken CLARKEN RACING

Redin on …

TAB’s November 7 system crash which caused nation-wide havoc

for racing codes. He says TRSA made the right call in postponing

its meeting to November 9 when it became evident that Tabcorp

would be unable to rectify its server issues during Saturday’s

racing. “Obviously there is still a loss across the board due to not

racing on the Saturday and Sunday was impacted as well, so we are

continuing to work through that with Tabcorp. Obviously, Tabcorp

have got every single code in every single state who were impacted

by it and they have got a lot of work to do to work their way through

those (obligations) and we are working through ours with the three

codes at the moment (as to whether we can seek compensation).”

Whether TRSA will receive a bigger share of the Point of

Consumption tax. “We have got a four-year agreement with the

government and we will sit down with them before next year’s

budget and work through that. Whether extra revenue comes from

POC or whether it comes from somewhere else, it is probably

irrelevant. It is more what the industry needs to be competitive that

we will work on, rather than where it comes from.”

Earlier this year, TRSA launched a public advertising campaign in

a bid to attract more trainers to the state but Redin said while the

organisation still “had some irons in the fire” it was not yet ready

to confirm the recruitment of any trainers. He said: “It is all right to

attract trainers but we have got to have somewhere to put them.”

The injection of funds into the SABOIS

scheme will see the prize-money pool increased from $1.4 to $2 million

and progeny of mares bred to South Australian-based stallions are

automatically eligible for the scheme without the owner paying a fee.

The progeny of a mare who is bred back to a South Australian-

based stallion will be eligible for SABOIS at a fee of $550, while a South

Australian-based breeder can make their foal eligible for the scheme by

paying a $825 fee.

In a change, weanlings who are agisted in South Australia and majority

owned by South Australians will also be eligible for SABOIS if the owners

pay a $2200 entry fee while, on a once-off basis, yearlings purchased

between December 1 and July 31 next year

will also be eligible for the scheme if a

$3300 fee is paid.

“It will certainly make it more

attractive for people with a good colt

to (look to South Australia) ... and

I think there will be more interest

from breeders in South Australia to

potentially get together like they do in

New Zealand to invest in stallions and

stand them in South Australia.” Hayes said.

“The costs associated with travelling mares

interstate for the breeding

season becomes significant

over time, so I could see

a consortium of breeders

considering investing in a

stallion again in this state on the

back of that announcement.”

Hayes also welcomed

TRSA’s announcement that a

SABOIS payment will be paid

on all races run at the Saturday meeting prior to the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2,

3200m) and the Adelaide Cup meeting. A $5000 non-transferable voucher

to be used at the 2021 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale will also be

gifted to the owners for the first SABOIS-eligible horse home in each race.

“SA Breeders were always proponents of that voucher system that they

have had in other states such as NSW,” he said.

“We love that idea - anything that gets people to the sale buying

yearlings, we are all for.

“Adelaide is probably the best value sale in the country in terms of

results versus sale price. It is a great shopping ground in the $30,000 to

$70,000 range and there is no better value sale in the country.

“This will give owners, trainers and breeders a spring in their step

with the announcements over the past 48 hours.”

Rosemont buys Sneaky Five’s dam for $410,000Group 1 winning-racemare Small Minds (Canny

Lad), dam of unbeaten Golden Gift (1100m)

winner Sneaky Five (Fastnet Rock), set a new

Inglis Digital record in yesterday’s November

(Late) Online Auction when she realised

$410,000 to Sandhurst Bloodstock on behalf of

Rosemont Stud. The 14-year-old, winner of

the 2010 Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), was

offered by Goldin Farms in foal to Yulong’s

dual Group 1-winner Grunt (O’Reilly) and she

surpassed the previous Inglis Digital record of

$400,000, set by Manaya (Hinchinbrook) in July

2019. Small Minds has thus far produced four

named foals, three of whom have raced and

all of whom have won, including Jungle Dawn

Classic (Listed, 1400m) winner Beautiful Mind

(So You Think) and exciting Ciaron Maher

and David Eustace-trained juvenile Sneaky

Five, winner of the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m)

on debut at Moonee Valley prior to taking out

the $1 million Golden Gift at Rosehill to mark

herself as a juvenile with legitimate Group

1 aspirations in the autumn. Yesterday’s

acquisition was the second major broodmare

purchase for Rosemont Stud from Inglis Digital,

the Gnarwarre-based operation having secured

dual Group 3 winner Jamaican Rain (Manhattan

Rain) in the September (Late) Online Auction

for $280,000. She has since been covered by

Arrowfield Stud’s Dundeel (High Chaparral).

‘Absolutely thrilled’: reaction to Small Minds purchase Ryan McEvoy, Rosemont’s general manager

- bloodstock, said the team was ‘absolutely

thrilled’ to introduce Small Minds to the

broodmare band. “It’s very hard to find a mare

that has thrown two stakes winners – Sneaky

Five and Beautiful Mind – from only four foals,

three of which have raced. That’s a unique

achievement for any broodmare,” McEvoy

said. “We were over the moon with purchasing

Sneaky Five (realised $305,000 at the Inglis

Premier Yearling Sale) and to see what she

has done in a short time, being undefeated in

an Inglis Banner and $1 million Golden Gift

to now be among the favourites for the Inglis

Millennium and Golden Slipper. Small Minds is

obviously a daughter of Canny Lad, so an easy

mare to mate and we think there will be some

great opportunities with her in the next five

to six years. Rosemont Stud has a lot of young

stakes-performing mares on the farm so it’s great

to secure a more proven style of mare, plus we’re

hoping for a few fillies out of Small Minds to join

the Rosemont broodmare band and that’s the

reason why we were happy to be a little stronger

on her.” Jeff Gordon of Goldin Farms, who offered

Small Minds, was also rapt with yesterday’s

result. “It’s unbelievable, an amazing price,

amazing, Goldin Farms management couldn’t

be happier,” he said. “I thought she would

bring between $250,000 and $350,000 and even

that was probably hopeful towards the top end,

so to get the $410,000, wow, what a result for

everybody. This mare is hot property at the

moment considering what Sneaky Five has

done already and the potential for further glory

in 2021, so we put her in foal to Grunt and it’s

just thrilling to see her realise such an amount.”

Kong. The three-year-old, who also won a

1000-metre trial at Wyong on November 11,

was offered by Aquis Farm and became the

third highest-priced offering to go through the

Inglis Digital platform. Out of the dual Group

3-placed Quaintly (Giant’s Causeway), he is

from the extended family of Coolmore breed-

shaper Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer). “This

is a great result,” said Shane McGrath, managing

director of Aquis. “The great thing about these

Inglis Online sales is the transparency and that

people can bid with confidence and that was

certainly the case with Evolutionary and we

couldn’t be happier. His two recent trial wins

showed he would make a lovely horse for Hong

Kong and this result shows the demand for the

high-level Hong Kong horses is tremendous.

He’s got a fantastic temperament this horse,

he’s shown his tremendous ability as recently

as Tuesday at the trials, and he’s a very nice pick

up for his new owners.’’

Six for Wordsmith Tasmanian owner-breeders Paul and Elizabeth

Geard enjoyed another stakes winner by their

resident GeeGee Stud stallion Wordsmith

(Testa Rossa) when Gee Gee Secondover (5

g ex Gee Gees Firstover by Over) took out the

Tasmanian Newmarket (Listed, 1200m) at

Launceston yesterday. Sent off an unheralded

$18 chance, the Leon, Dean and Trent Wells-

trained Gee Gee Secondover secured his first

stakes win, and ninth overall, at start 27 when

fending off the challenge of favourite Mandela

Effect (Turffontein) by a long neck. Second

favourite Street Tough (Tough Speed) was a

further length adrift in third. In doing so, Gee

Gee Secondover became the sixth individual

stakes winner for Wordsmith, a Group

| 8 |

3-winning son of Testa Rossa (Perugino) who

is standing the 2020 breeding season at the

Geards’ Broadmarsh base for a fee of $4,400.

Gee Gee Secondover joins fellow homebreds

Geegees Goldengirl, Gee Gees Top Notch, Gee

Gee Double Dee, Gee Gee Josie and Geegees

Classicboy as stakes scorers for Wordsmith,

who covered 26 mares at a fee of $5,500 in 2019.

Durrant keen on Stageman’s chancesAdam Durrant believes Stageman (Written

Tycoon) can uphold Western Australian

pride and repel the threat of interstate raider

Trekking (Street Cry) in the Winterbottom

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) and

Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner

Trekking is the hot favourite to land the $1

million feature for James Cummings and

Godolphin, but Durrant has issued a positive

bulletin on Black Heart Bart Stakes (Listed,

1200m) winner Stageman, who ran ninth in the

Winterbottom 12 months ago and was last seen

finishing a neck second in the Colonel Reeves

Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). “I think we have the locals

covered if we do everything right,” Durrant told

Tabradio. “Obviously, the main stumbling block

is the Godolphin horse, who is high class. They

don’t win five million if they are bottlers. But I

wouldn’t swap him (Stageman) for any other

horse, including the favourite.” Looking ahead

to the weekend, Durrant added: “He is the type

of horse that has a few tricks. That’s just him

and he will get back - he just needs luck at the

right time. His last 400 (metres) and 200 (metres)

is probably better than anything in the race when

things go his way. You just have to be hopeful

and we are happy with his condition. His lead

up races have been good and we’ve been happy

with the way he’s been training.” Stageman has

drawn barrier nine in the Winterbottom. Rated a

$9 chance with Tabtouch, he will be ridden by Pat

Carbery. Trekking is on his outside in barrier 11.

William Pike takes the ride on the $2.30 favourite.

Spaceboy set to shine in StarlightSpaceboy (Deep Field) has proven a formidable

sprinter in 2020 when partnered by Kathy

O’Hara, winning his first four starts under the

rider before running a one-length second in a

Randwick handicap on his comeback earlier

this month, and his trainer Gary Portelli is

delighted O’Hara will once again be in the plate

when the four-year-old goes in search of a first

black-type in Saturday’s Starlight Stakes (Listed,

1100m) at Rosehill. "She really knows him and

he has turned it around with Kath on," Portelli

said. "Hopefully she can continue that winning

streak from Saturday onwards." Reflecting on his

Randwick run, Portelli continued: "He missed a

bit of work and I think that brought him undone

over the last 100 metres. He has since had a barrier

trial to keep him up to the mark, but it's a big test

for him. This is the strongest field he's met so far so

we will see how he goes, but he has a lightweight

to offset it in 53 kilos." Spaceboy will be joined in

the Starlight by stable companion Single Bullet

(Not A Single Doubt), who has drawn barrier 10

under Regan Bayliss. Of his chances, Portelli said:

"I just wish he had drawn a bit softer because now

we will have to ride him negative and see if he can

come with the one big run, but he can do that and

there looks to be good speed in the race.”

Waterhouse and Bott to train Alligator BloodKestrel Thoroughbreds’ Bruce Slade has played

a key role in Group 1 winner Alligator Blood

(All Too Hard) joining the stable of trainers Gai

Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. On Sunday, it was

revealed that David Vandyke had told Alligator

Blood’s owners to find a new trainer for the

gelding and the other horses prepared by him for

the Ezybonds syndicate. “I’ve dealt with Gai in

the past, we’ve always had a great relationship

there. Adrian Bott made contact through Bruce

Slade, who I am very close with,” co-owner

Allan Endresz told Racing.com. “What was on

the table was every box ticked. No questions,

absolutely perfect. The final sealer, which made

it really quick to make the decision and not sit

and wait, was Gai’s tenacity. She’s a true blue

Alligator Blood, baby.” Four-year-old Alligator

Blood is currently recovering from a back injury.

City double for Griffiths and De KockMathew De Kock, who arrived in Australia in

March and officially joined Robbie Griffiths

on the training license last month, celebrated

his first Melbourne winner yesterday when La

Pietra (Pierro) broke her maiden at the seventh

attempt. And the son of champion South

African trainer Mike De Kock did not have to

wait long for a second victory, with King Magnus

(Magnus) landing the 1300-metre handicap later

on the card. Having saddled their first runner as a

training partnership on October 21, De Kock and

Griffiths got off the mark in Melbourne as Dean

Yendall gave La Pietra a confident ride, guiding

the four-year-old to a half-length success over

last-start Cranbourne third Tarantello (Dandino).

“We're all over the moon, we're really excited,"

De Kock told Racing.com. "She's a little quirky at

home but I think she's got more ability than a one-

time winner. It's a big team effort with her, she's

not easy, it takes a lot of staff to get her to the races

and she's done a good job today. She's a scopey

mare by Pierro and I think this is the bottom range

of her distance." Following the victory of King

Magnus, De Kock added: "I thought one winner

was awesome, now I'm really excited. We were

pretty confident, he's done nothing wrong, he was

drawn (barrier) one and was always going to get

the run of the race."

Strome targeting Wodonga CupMelbourne jockeys’ premiership leader Jamie

Kah will make her first visit to Wodonga

tomorrow when she takes the mount on local

competitor Strome (Smart Missile) in the

$100,000 Wodonga Gold Cup (1590m). Kah,

who completed a period of suspension that

ended on Monday, will be taking her first ride

since when she partners eight-time winner

Strome, one of two mounts on the card for

home-track trainer David O'Prey. Strome was

bought by Reg Ryan and Pinhook Bloodstock’s

Dave Mee for $50,000 at the Magic Millions

Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in late

July prior to joining her current connections.

She won third-up for the yard when taking out

a $125,000 Benchmark 84 Handicap (1400m) at

Caulfield on October 14 with Kah aboard. "Reg

Ryan, my biggest owner, is a breeder and is on

the Wodonga committee and he bought her

Capitalist colt wins trialThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Repeal

(Capitalist), purchased by his trainers for

$150,000 from the Coomore draft at the

made a big impression when winning an

morning. Partnered by Jason Collett, Repeal -

sister to Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

winner Earthquake - dashed two and a

Harron Bloodstock in 2019 - was a half-length

winner over 1000 metres. The three-year-old

has not raced since running ninth, beaten

13.5 lengths, on his debut at Randwick in

January.

Payne and Allen cop suspensionsMichelle Payne and Ben Allan both received

eight-day suspensions for careless riding

in the 1212-metre maiden at Kyneton on

Tuesday. Payne permitted her mount Sotirio

(Lonhro) to shift out near the 200 metres

when not sufficiently clear of Loudspeaker

(Sepoy), who was tightened for room

between Sotirio and All’s Fair (Warhorse)

and was subsequently checked. Allen, on

Loudspeaker, allowed his mount to shift out

near the 300 metres when not sufficiently

clear of Breaking Waves (Redoute’s Choice),

resulting in that filly being tightened outwards

towards All’s Fair, who lost its rightful running

and had to be restrained. Allen's suspension

will expire at midnight on December 3, while

Payne's ends at midnight, November 30.

Positive signs for ClarkeA positive update has been issued on much-

loved Cranbourne trainer Udyta Clarke, who

was admitted to the Monash Hospital in the

early hours of Tuesday morning with bleeding

on the brain. Racing Victoria reported Clarke

had opened her eyes several times and has

been moved out of the emergency department

of the hospital. “It’s still a very serious situation

but she’s such a fighter and once again she’s

giving it everything she has,” Clarke’s close

friend and colleague Julie Murray said. “We’ve

been so humbled by the generous support from

so many in the racing industry and can’t thank

everyone enough for reaching out.”

VRC reveal summer calendar Rapid Rapid will return in 2021 as the

Victoria Racing Club yesterday revealed the

summer calendar for Flemington. Rapid

Racing, a condensed program of seven

races and 30-minute intervals between

contests, was introduced this year and will

be back on January 29 as one of four twilight

meetings held at the track during the month.

Flemington will race for the first time since

the spring carnival on Saturday, December

12, with a Christmas race-day the following

week. Four twilight meetings will be staged

on January 1, 9, 16 and 29, while February’s

four fixtures include the return of Group 1

racing. Black Caviar, The Great Horse Race

Day, will feature the Black Caviar Lightning

(Gr 1, 1000m) on Saturday, February 13 with

the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) set

to be run a fortnight later. New VRC chief

executive Steve Rosich told Racing.com of

the calendar: "The VRC's trial of twilight

race meetings last season was a great success

and forms the foundation for an outstanding

month of twilight racing in January 2021. This

move also fits well into the Victorian racing

calendar and gives participants greater clarity

on twilight race meetings."

All-Star Mile date confirmed as race-free week trial gets green lightAlso confirmed yesterday was the date for the

third running of the All-Star Mile (1600m),

which will be held at Moonee Valley on

Saturday, March 13. "With the second running

of the All-Star Mile run behind closed doors at

the commencement of the pandemic, we are

hopeful that next year's running at The Valley on

Saturday, 13 March will be a chance for people

to gather and enjoy the world's richest mile

race trackside," Greg Carpenter, RV's executive

general manager racing, told Racing.com. RV

yesterday confirmed that a race-free week at

the conclusion of the season will be trialled for

the next two years. No race meetings or official

trials have been programmed in Victoria from

Monday, 26 July 2021 to Friday, 30 July 2021.

This will be repeated in July 2022. This follows

on from no race meetings being scheduled on

Christmas Eve in order to give participants a

two-day break from racing. Carpenter added:

"We are also looking forward to the trial of

a week free from racing and official trials at

the end of the season. This will give industry

participants a well-deserved break and again,

we're hopeful that people will be in a position

to take advantage of this."

Racing NSW on weather watchRacing NSW is monitoring the forecast

temperatures ahead of Saturday’s meeting

at Wagga Wagga and Sunday’s meeting at

Grafton, with highs of 41 degrees celsius

forecast for both venues. Should the forecast

not change at Wagga Wagga, the race

meeting will start earlier, with the final race

to be held just after 3pm. Should the forecast

remain unchanged at Grafton, the fixture

will be transferred to Coffs Harbour, which

is forecast to have a maximum temperature

of 33 degrees celsius. Should the meeting be

forced to switch, the following race distance

changes will apply at Coffs Harbour: class 1

and maiden races reduced from 1100 metres

to 1000 metres; class 1 and maiden plate

reduced from 2200 metres to 2100 metres

and the maiden handicap reduced from 1700

metres to 1600 metres.

NEW ZEALAND

‘Tough’ Key earns shot at Group 3Temperamental but tough filly Key (Exceed

And Excel) will be out to justify favouritism

when she steps into black-type company for

the first time in today’s Wellington Stakes

(Gr 3, 1600m) at Otaki. Trained by Johno

Benner and Hollie Wynyard, Key - a $550,000

purchase at last year’s Magic Millions Gold

Coast Yearling Sale for owner Gary Harding

- landed an Otaki maiden by three lengths

on debut before running a gallant second

behind Naval Fleet (Declaration Of War) at

Awapuni on October 31. "She's very good.

Even though she got beaten the other day, she

did an amazing job from the wide draw and it

still took a good one to beat her," Benner said.

"She's a grumpy filly and she's had her quirks

with the barriers but we think we've got that

under control now. She's just tough, both

physically and mentally. She's a really strong

filly and that's coming across in the way she

races.” Looking ahead to today’s assignment,

in which Key will face ten rivals under

Danielle Johnson, Benner added: "We've

had a fair bit of rain down here so we might

be racing on a slow track but that shouldn't

worry her. She won trials on heavy tracks and

she goes on anything. She's just tough.”

Deerfield chasing maiden stakes successEarlier on the Otaki card, the Chrissy Bambry-

trained Deerfield (Falkirk) will also go in search

of a maiden black-type win in the Levin Stakes

(Listed, 1200m), although the veteran sprinter

is at a different stage of his career compared

to Key. Indeed, the seven-year-old will be

making his 21st outing in the $50,000 contest

and Bambry is thankful that the rain has fallen

at Otaki. “I think he is a good chance and the

rain will be an assist. The wetter the better for

him,” she said. “He just trains on the water

treadmill and only goes on the track to gallop,

which he does very little of. That is the way

we have been able to keep his legs quite fresh

and his mind fresh. He lives in the paddock

as he hates being in a box.” Bambry said

Deerfield is due a short break after today’s

outing before being set for the Telegraph (Gr 1,

1200m). “If he went for a break, it would be a bit

of a freshen-up, more than a lengthy break as he

gets a bit keen in his paddock after a while and

runs around,” she added. “The way he has been

working, he doesn’t look like a tired horse and

he was pretty naughty for the physio today, so

he is probably feeling pretty well.”

Australia likely for Explosively Talented three-year-old Explosively

(Sweynesse) is set to continue his career in

Australia having been bought off the back

of a three-length debut success at Te Rapa

yesterday. Trained by Stephen Ralph, the son of

Novara Park Stud stallion Sweynesse (Lonhro)

exploded out of the gates for apprentice

Tegan Newman and was never headed in the

Website Angels 1200. “He did something we

thought he would do, but it doesn’t always

work that way,” Ralph said. “Drawing barrier

five was ideal and he showed today that he

can jump, run, lead, and kick. We would have

been very disappointed if he didn’t win today.”

Explosively set tongues wagging when winning

a Taupo trial by four lengths on November 25

and Ralph added: “After the Taupo win the

phone was going off enquiring about him and

they (owner, Luigi Muollo) got a contract from

Hong Kong straight away, but he didn’t pass

the stringent Hong Kong vetting, hence why we

raced him today. Straight after today Australian

interests have bought a half-share in him, so at

this stage if the sale goes through he will be off

to Australia. Luigi will retain a half share and in

our book he will go a long way over there. He is

a horse that can cop a fair bit of pressure, like he

did today, and keep going. We would have liked

to have had a few starts with him. They are hard

to find these ones that can jump and run. It is a

bittersweet moment.”

Staying future for Samina BibiShaune Ritchie and Colm Murray look to

have a staying filly of the future on their

hands after Samina Bibi (Reliable Man) ran

out an impressive debut winner at Te Rapa

yesterday. Ridden by apprentice Wiremu

Pinn, Samina Bibi sat three-deep throughout

but bounded away from her rivals in the BCD

Group 3YO (1400m) to win by two-and-a-

quarter lengths. “It was a big win,” Ritchie said.

“To sit three-wide without cover and win like

that was impressive. She is a beautiful staying

type and clearly looks an Oaks type.” Ritchie

knows what it takes to win an Oaks, having

saddled the winner of the New Zealand Oaks

(Gr 1, 2400m) on three occasions with Keep

The Peace (Keeper) in 2010, Artistic (Darci

Brahma) in 2012 and Jennifer Eccles (Rip

Van Winkle) this year. The Cambridge trainer

selected the filly on behalf of loyal owners

Gary and Lyne Witters for $170,000 at last

year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run

Sale.

TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS

Inspirational Girl landed a windfall for

favourite backers who crunched her

from $3.50 to $2.60 in taking the Railway

Stakes at Ascot last Saturday, becoming

the first Group 1 winner bred by New Zealand’s

Jamieson Park stud.

The West Australian mare – yet another from

breeder Bob Peters’ cerise and white production

line - had won eight of her ten previous starts,

starting at $2.25 or less each time.

Yet there’s a fair dash of the upset in the

pedigree behind the bay five-year-old.

Her grey British-bred sire Reliable Man – by

Arc de Triomphe winner Dalakhani – emulated

his dad in taking the French Derby, in 2011,

at odds of 16-1 under Melbourne Cup-winner

Gerald Mosse.

Reliable Man later had two runs in Australia.

He followed up a debut sixth in the George

Ryder Stakes by adding a second Group 1 title

with a two-and-a-half length win in Randwick’s

2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes for trainer Chris

Waller in a horror show for favourite supporters,

the 12-1 pop beating raging $1.28 chance It’s A

Dundeel. In so doing, Reliable Man became the

first northern-bred horse to claim Group 1s in

both hemispheres in more than 20 years.

Inspirational Girl has continued a strong

run for her dual hemisphere sire – now standing

in Germany - whose best progeny so far have

been in the antipodes.

Reliable Man is also the sire of VRC Oaks

and Moonee Valley Cup winner Miami Bound,

New Zealand stakes-winners Hypnos and Belle

Du Nord, plus Australian black type winner

Main Stage, and VRC Derby-placed Sully.

While Reliable Man’s siring efforts in the

south have so far outstripped his record in the

north, the 12-year-old has left stakes winners

in Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden and

Denmark.

Inspirational Girl, who reaped the

Waikato’s Jamieson Park Stud $190,000 at

the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier

Yearling Sale, is shaping as the finest product

of her dam Be Inspired. The Zabeel mare

showed only limited ability on the track,

boasting just two third placings from five

starts for Sydney trainer John O’Shea in the

2006-07 season, but has performed better as

a broodmare.

Her second named foal was the Duporth

gelding Ruettiger, who scored a Listed win at

Flemington in the All Victorian Sprint Series

final (1200m) in 2016, beating no less a galloper

than the exceptional Group 1-winning Voodoo

Lad into second place.

Little wonder a Hinchinbrook - Be Inspired

filly fetched a robust $300,000 at last year’s

Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast,

while another daughter Allez Bien (by O’Reilly)

sold for $280,000 at last year’s Magic Millions

National Broodmare Sale.

Deeper into Inspirational Girl’s pedigree,

Be Inspired is closely related to two stakes

winners also out of the Centaine mare Done

That.

Team Hawkes-trained full brother Rainbow

Styling won two black type 2000-metre races

in 2010 – Randwick’s Listed Tatts Cup and

Caulfield’s Group 3 Naturalism Stakes – the

latter bringing another relative upset at 14-1

(two races after the great So You Think had

landed the Underwood Stakes).

And half-sister Zingaling (Redoute’s

Choice) notched two stakes wins for Kris Lees,

including the 2011 Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes

at Rosehill (when drifting from $9 to $11).

Done That is out of the Mill Reef mare

Giladah, daughter of the Luskin Star mare

Nouvelle Star. Giladah threw another pair of

stakes winners including Star Of Nouvelle, who

sprung another upset in taking the Group 2 STC

Reisling Slipper Trial at hefty odds in 1993.

All in all, Inspirational Girl is portending

big things for Jamieson Park, which snapped

up Be Inspired as one of its first broodmare

purchases, at the 2012 NZB Broodmare Sale

for around the $100,000 mark. She’d already

had two foals for her Australian owners, and

one of them was the Duporth colt offered as a

weanling at the same sale, who turned out to

be Ruettiger.

“We liked the fact she was a Zabeel

mare,” says Jamieson Park’s Sam Munro, who

manages the stud along with owner James

Chapman. “But the Duporth weanling was a

very nice type and that sparked our interest

as well.

“Plus, Be Inspired was just a beautiful

looking mare, and she had a pedigree with a

lot of depth and no weak links. Centaine is a

good broodmare producer, plus there’s Mill

Reef there as well through Giladah.”

As for the choice of sire in the making of

Inspirational Girl, not only was Reliable Man

shuttling just down the road from Jamieson

Park at Westbury Park, he also had the great

Mill Reef in his bloodline, four generations

back (Shirley Heights - Darshaan - Dalakhani

- Reliable Man).

“Reliable Man was a high class racehorse,

and the match-up with Be Inspired tabulated

very nicely,” Munro says. “You don’t see

much of having Mill Reef on both sides like

that down here. It’s obviously worked very

well with the record Inspirational Girl has

been building up.”

Jamieson Park is now hoping history

can repeat, with Be Inspired again in foal

to Reliable Man. She also has what Munro

describes as “a very nice filly” at foot from the

first crop of Coolmore’s US Navy Flag, via his

shuttle to NZ’s Valachi Downs.

“She’s one of the best foals we’ve got,

so we’re hoping for big things there,” says

Munro, who manages some 35 broodmares at

Jamieson.

“Be Inspired is getting on a bit at 18, but

she just throws very nice looking foals who

present very nicely at the sales.

“We’re pretty wrapped to have bred a

Group 1 winner. They’re pretty hard things

to breed! Hopefully there’ll be more to come.

Analysis: Gee Gee Secondover overcame his difficult outside barrier (11) to record his ninth win in 27 starts - and his first at stakes level - in scoring here. He was ridden patiently in the early stages and settled at the tail of the field before improving on the inner from the 600m. He then got through on the inner, took a gap at the 200m, hit the front shortly afterwards and went on to win well. Favourite Mandela Effect settled midfield between runners and was travelling well before being blocked at the turn. He found a gap at the 200m and came with a late run for second in a good effort under his top weight (59.5kg). Street Tough missed the start and was last early on before settling in sixth place on the rails. He was briefly blocked at the turn, got into clear running at the 200m and then battled on well for third, with O’Lonh Star holding on for fourth after leading the field until into the home straight.
