Dale Romans rolls the dice quicker than most train-ers, he’s made it by being aggressive, positive, running when they’re right.

Sunday, Romans took a shot with 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford, shortening him in the Vanderbilt and sticking to his plan after he drew the inside post and it rained. The dice hit the floor when Shackleford faded to last.

Friday, Romans rolled the dice yet again, keeping Quick Wit in the National Museum and Racing Hall of Fame Stakes after the $200,000 stakes switched to the sloppy main track. This time, it worked, as Mi-chael Bruder’s Quick Wit wore down a game Csaba to win by a nose. Rajiv Maragh picked up the ride in the morning when jockey Corey Lanerie missed a con-necting flight in Atlanta.

“They’re two different horses. Shackleford in hind-sight, I gave him three chances in the slop, I won’t make the mistake the fourth time, I’ll take all the blame for that loss,” Romans said. “This horse, there wasn’t a whole lot to lose, he wasn’t an expensive horse for us, he has good form on the dirt, I don’t think his one poor mud race was his fault, he got jammed up in that race, it wasn’t the surface, so we gave him another chance.”

Asked to compare the decisions, Romans shook his

head. “This was a lot easier decision,” Romans said.

“Shackleford, I had to mull over quite a bit. And I maybe gave into a little external pressure put on by myself, that won’t happen again.”

Quick Wit will definitely happen again. The 3-year-old son of Sharp Humor earned his third

victory in his 10th career start. Purchased for $32,000 out of WinStar’s consignment at Keeneland November last year, the winner broke his maiden at Gulfstream in January, played with fire in the Hutcheson, Swale and Derby Trial before Romans switched the bay colt to the turf. He promptly finished second in an allowance at Churchill Downs before knocking out the condition

in his next start. Shipped to Arlington for the Grade II American Derby, he failed to threaten Romans’ Coz-zetti, checking in fifth.

A month later, Romans entered him in the Hall of Fame and watched the sky.

“I told the owner last night after handicapping for a while, that if it came off, it might move us up,” Ro-mans said. “He’s steadily improved, he’s been a won-derful colt. I looked at him at the sale because of his father, of course, I try to look at all the sons of horses I trained. I loved him at the sale and we got him rela-tively cheap and he’s been a homerun.”

- Trainer Allen Jerkens

“I had a horse that wasn’t trying. I had two or three good guys who could do anything I tell them. I said, ‘I want to blow this horse out an eighth of a mile and I don’t want you to be taking a quarter of a mile shot at the pole and another three eighths of a mile to pull him up. I want to go one eighth of a mile, get it?’ ‘OK.’ Came back. ‘That what you wanted?’ ‘Yeah.’ So, the next day, do the same thing. He had a harder time pulling him up. We skipped a day. Did it again. One eighth of a mile. He went three eighths of a mile in 35 by the time he got him pulled up. I put him in and he won. I just thought it would shake him up and put him

light on his feet.”

Tired of losing days away from your barn because of breeze shows?Wondering how bad a conformation flaw really affects a horse’s gait?

Want to watch works instead of your stopwatch?Trying to avoid horses with breathing problems but not sure how?

Quick Wit increased his earnings to $223,761.

Maragh hustled Quick Wit in the first sixteenth of a mile to earn a stalk-ing spot in third, just off Calder shipper Csaba and Skyring through a quarter mile in 23.63 and a half in 48.08. Mid-way on the turn, Maragh gunned Quick Wit between Csaba and Skyring, en-gaging the leader as the duo turned for home after three quarters in 1:13.45. Past the eighth pole, Quick Wit wres-tled the lead from Csaba, opening up a neck and looking poised for a clear vic-

tory. Whether the winner was gawking, according to Bruder, or Csaba dug in and tried again, the margin began to go back the other way as Csaba reeled in Quick Wit in the final strides, perhaps, getting his nose in front a few strides be-fore the wire.

Bruder looked at the positive.“When the photo finish was taking

all that time, I was thinking, ‘Second’s not the worst thing in the world, better than third,’ ” Bruder said.

Bruder didn’t have to test whether he believed such optimism, earning his first win at Saratoga.

From Evansville, Indiana, Bruder began owning horses in 1977, had as many as 23 at one time and now owns eight horses, three of them in training.

Bruder will go for a stakes double when Guys Reward tries Saturday’s Fourstar-dave.

“They said I ran one here in 2000 and I probably did, but it wasn’t of this quality, this is a great thrill,” Bruder said. “Every once in a while you get to win one like this, at Saratoga, it sure is sweet.”

Bruder has honed his system over the years, relying on his own convictions while shopping the fall yearling sales.

“I’ve had some pretty nice little horses, I just go pick them out myself,” Bruder said. “I’ve got some things I look for when I buy them, first I take the book and read it, get the breeding I want, then I go and pull them out of those barns at Keeneland, I check the

conformation on them, if I like that, then I get them scoped, then I bid. I bid to what I feel my limit is, if you want to bid higher, you won the bid.”

Bruder won the bid for Quick Wit last fall and has reaped the rewards ever since. He knows he’s come a long way from $2,500 claimers at River Downs and Turfway to winning the Fourstar-dave at Saratoga.

“At one time, I had 23 of these things, on a ten-dollar deal,” Bruder said. “The guy who trained him would drive the pickup truck with a guy sitting in one of those old aluminum lawnchairs holding the horse, you made them go as fast or slow as you want. I’ve come from do-ing that to being at Saratoga with Quick Wit and Guys Reward.”

Today’s feature, the 28th running of the Fourstardave attracts a deep and competitive field for its $500,000 purse. The Grade 2 stakes going a mile on the inner turf goes off as the last race on the 11-race card.

The top three choices will eye each other as they walk into the gate. The 3-1 second choice Data Link breaks from the rail, 5-2 favorite Wise Dan goes from the second slot and third choice Get Stormy keeps his eye on them from the three hole.

Beyond the big three are Guys Re-ward, winner of his last three includ-ing the Grade II Firecracker, Corporate Junge who’s won 4-of-8 including the Grade III Appleton. Right One, Sur-frider, Upgrade and 8-year-old veteran Yield Bogey complete the field.

data link goes for two in a rowSix days ago, Data Link breezed 4

furlongs on the Oklahoma turf. Jen Pat-terson guided the 4-year-old colt inside the dogs and let him scamper a half-mile in 46 1/5 over the firm turf. Like a beer mug down a bar, Data Link glided through the move.

Clockers whistled. Patterson called him a machine. Shug McGaughey, as always, tried to temper the enthusiasm.

“He went good,” McGaughey said Friday morning. “But, 46 and change with those dogs down, that’s about like going in 48.”

It was no 48, and McGaughey knows it.

“I do think he’s really doing good, he’s appeciated being up here on this track, he’s moving better than I’ve seen him move in a long time,” McGaughey said. “With a race like this, it’s whoever gets the trip, we have the inside, I want to save ground on this turf, but you might get stuck down there too.”

Owned and bred by Stuart Janney, Data Link has made 10 starts on the turf, winning six of them, including a pristine score in the Grade II Monmouth Stakes when John Velazquez rallied him from last to run down Get Stormy.

“He ran really, really well at Mon-mouth, Johnny was patient with him back there, swung him to the outside,

and it was over with, set a new course record.”

One of three 4-year-olds in the field, Data Link broke his maiden late in his 2-year-old year at Aqueduct. He won two straight at Gulfstream last winter and McGaughey planned to run him the Grade I Toyota Blue Grass at Keeneland until Data Link hurt his hind end while breezing.

Given eighth months off, he returned over soft turf at Belmont, finishing fourth. Shipped to Florida, he won a tough three other than allowance before finishing second in the Grade II Canadi-an Turf Stakes. That set up him perfect-ly for the Grade I Maker’s Mark which he won at Keeneland in April, blasting

“I was thinking should I or shouldn’t I, and I did, it came up a little soft that day, he broke and he took him to the inside, that wasn’t the right place to be, then he got in trouble a couple of times,” McGaughey said. “I should have waited for the race at Pimlico is what I should have done, to make a long story short. I do think he’s a very good horse and he’s doing pretty good right now.”

As for the rain, McGaughey was worried.

“I’ll have to pay attention to it. I’m hoping it doesn’t,” McGaughey said before the rain came Friday. “Either way, I have the Bernard Baruch, there’s enough time for that.”

Wise dan goes back to turfDirt . . . Polytrack . . . Tapeta . . . turf. A modern version of those “run on

anything” horses of yesteryear, Wise Dan owns stakes wins on all four sur-faces for owner/breeder Morton Fink and trainer Charlie Lopresti. After losing by a head to Ron The Greek in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster (on dirt) in June, the 5-year-old chestnut heads

back to the turf in the Fourstardave and is the morning line favorite at 5-2.

The surface switch was not entirely by design. Lopresti shipped to Saratoga with two major stakes horses – Success-ful Dan and Wise Dan. Either would have been a player in last week’s Whit-ney, but Lopresti opted to split the half-brothers and aimed Successful Dan for the Whitney. Wise Dan would return to the turf (where he won the Grade 2 Firecracker last year) in the Fourstar-dave. Like so many good plans, that one unraveled when Successful Dan went to the sidelines with an injury. Despite the bad news, Lopresti did not call an au-dible.

“I know Successful Dan got hurt, but Wise Dan never even had a work

over the (dirt) track,” he said. “In my right mind, I couldn’t have changed in midstream and put him in the Whitney without even having a work over the track. That’s not fair to him. It’s not his fault something happened to Successful Dan.”

Wise Dan has had two 5-furlong works over the Oklahoma turf course – an easy 1:02 3/5 July 20 and a bullet 58 2/5 July 30. Lopresti liked both moves.

“I couldn’t be happier with him,” the trainer said. “He finished strong in the first work, coming home in 35 and change (for 3 furlongs). We let him work faster the next time and he worked really good. The clockers got

the last quarter in 22 and change.”Wise Dan makes his third start of 2012, following

a romp in the 9-furlong Ben Ali (Polytrack) at Keene-land in April and the runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Foster (dirt). Last year, he won half his eight starts – one each on turf, Tapeta, Polytrack and dirt.

“He just likes to run I guess, I don’t know,” said Lopresti, who thinks his horse’s best races have been on turf or synthetic – not that there’s anything wrong with his dirt form.

Like everybody else, he wonders about the tactics in the Fourstardave and sees 2010 race winner Get Stormy as the biggest force in the field.

“I’m not sure anybody else is going to take him on too soon,” said Lopresti. “I sure don’t want to be head

and head with him going a half in 46 on the front end. You can’t let that horse get loose going 47 or 48 be-cause you won’t catch him, but I don’t want to be the sacrificial lamb.”

New Hall of Famer John Velazquez rides his fourth consecutive race on the Kentucky-bred, a nine-time winner of more than $1 million.

get stormy gets back to work With a wide, long blaze that stretches from his fore-

lock to the tip of his nose and four tall white socks on his legs, Get Stormy oddly resembles a Clydesdale. In fact, that’s just how the 6-year-old got his nickname.

“His nickname is Clyde because when he came off the van as a 2-year-old he had these white feet and white legs and the reddish brown color, and I said, ‘Hell, he looks like a Clydesdale yearling,’ ” said train-er Tom Bush. “If we grew fetlock hairs on him, he’d

look exactly like one.”By now, the 6-year-old is a familiar face – and body

– to Saratoga fans. He makes his seventh career start on the inner turf today – looking for win number five as the 4-1 third choice in the Fourstardave, a race he won in 2010 and missed last year.

Since his maiden win in December 2008 on a cold day at Aqueduct, Bush’s superstar horse has won sev-en graded stakes including the three Grade 1 races, the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes, and most recently Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap in February.

Bush tries to place Get Stormy in the right places, at the right time and runs his horse in just about the same races every year. In 2010, the Stormy Atlantic colt won the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch and Fourstar-dave in back-to-back efforts at the Spa. Unfortunately the following year didn’t go as smoothly.

“Last year we were actually getting him ready for the Fourstardave,” said Bush. ‘We were breezing him on the turf over there and this was before I knew that you could take a good horse out by themselves. And I went out with all these other horses and a horse got loose and just as it ran though the inside rail and in to the infield, Get Stormy was like at the eighth pole breezing. The jockey had to pull him up severely, and when he did, he hit himself and got a little bump on his tendon. So we ultra-sounded it and looked at it and we could see that it was outside the tendon. He didn’t hurt himself, but he had a little inflammation and I couldn’t run him. So then he didn’t get to run until the Ber-nard Baruch and that put his races at al-most three months away and he got just a little bit tired in the race and Turallure was just really coming in to his own.”

Get Stormy settled for second that day and faces a tough field today. The race is still a Grade 2, but is worth $350,000 more than it was in 2010. Money brings talent.

“You got to beat Data Link right away, he’s your prohibitive favorite, and of course this horse of Charlie Lopresti’s (Wise Dan) has extremely good form,” said Bush. “He’s not quite as proven on the turf as this race warrants but man he’s a damn good horse and of course Charlie has just been amazing for a number of years so you have to respect him for sure. They’re all train-ing fantastic, everybody’s breezed well,

that’s what happens when they put up $500,000.”

Second to Data Link last time out at Monmouth, Get Stormy gets jockey Ed-die Castro at 4-1 and will most likely be up front early – seeking to balance his speed and the race’s 1-mile distance. Win or lose, “Clyde” has been a special horse for his trainer and owner/breeder Mary Sullivan.

“He’s given us a lot of thrills,” said Bush. “This horse is so smart, he could do anything. There’s nothing this horse

can’t do, that’s how smart he is.”– Gabby Gaudet

guys reward eyes another paydayIn his stall in Barn 28, in the back

corner of the main track near the three eighths pole, Guys Reward stood Fri-day morning, tossing his hay about. Sticking his head as far out as possi-ble, craning his neck, he tried to catch a glimpse into his next-door neighbor, Zeb’s stall. After failing to see the bay gelding who had sunk back into the

corner of his stall, Guys Reward stood straight up and started to dance. Head bobbing up and down, tail swishing this way and that, he took his right front leg and crossed it over his left, straightened up, and then repeated in the opposite direction. It was as if he had invisible headphones on and way listening to some ’90s rock and roll.

The 5-year-old enters today’s race off three consecutive wins, the most recent, a 2-length victory in the Grade 2 Fire-cracker Handicap at Churchill Downs for owner Michael Bruder and trainer Dale Romans.

Although he’s a newcomer to the Saratoga turf, the son of Grand Reward is no stranger to running a mile on the grass. He’s 4-for-9 lifetime at the dis-tance on the turf, and looks to extend his streak.

Kentucky jockey Corey Lanerie, who missed a ride on Hall of Fame Stakes winner Quick Wit due to missing a con-nection in Atlanta, is named on the dark bay 5-year-old, who is fourth choice on the morning line.

morning. “He’s a nice horse, a victim of the pace scenario last time. His best is good enough to compete. There’s an-other race the following week at Wood-bine, there’s an allowance race at the end of the meet, so we have choices.”

Owned and bred by Ghislaine Head, the French-bred 6-year-old gelding failed to make any impact in the Grade III Poker on July 4 at Belmont, while finishing 5 lengths behind Clear At-tempt. The son of Anabaa finished sec-ond in the Grade III Jaipur in his penul-timate start, three quarters of a length off Upgrade and 2 3/4 lengths behind Yield Bogey.

Last year, Right One posted three wins from seven starts, including a win in the Jaipur. Winless since that victory, Right One makes his 10th consecutive stakes start while trying to snap a six-race losing streak.

Upgrade tries to do that in grade 2A positive attitude will get anyone

a long way in life, especially in horse racing. Things happen along the way – making trainers question their career choice – a horse gets loose the morning before a big race, one cuts its eye, an-other spikes a fever, the list goes on and on. For Michelle Nihei, an optimistic outlook is a must – it’s what has gotten her thus far.

“So much of it is having a positive mindset about everything,” said Nihei. “If people say, ‘how ya doing?’ you can’t

say ‘not so good’. You have to go to bed saying I did the best I could. It makes a difference if you do what makes you happy.”

What would make Nihei even more happy is a walk to the winner’s circle beside her 5-year-old gelding Upgrade after the Fourstardave. Owned by Den-nis Narlinger, Upgrade has won two of three starts this year for his new trainer including a win in the Grade 3 Jaipur Stakes at Belmont June 8.

Under Nihei’s training, Upgrade has only one disappointing performance. He finished fifth in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy

Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Belmont after he was forced to take an uncomfortable position on the lead. Nihei thinks to-day’s race will set up a little differently.

“He’s pretty tactical these days,” said Nihei. “Historically that’s kind of been his style but in the last couple of races he’s been much more manageable, par-ticularly when there’s some pace in the race. We had a tough trip in the Fort Marcy. We sadly inherited the lead which wasn’t the right situation for him and when you’re running against really strong horses, they’re going to close like that, and you know it really wasn’t

quite the distance we wanted. As long as we’ve got pace and we don’t have to be in front, he can be mid-pack. He’s much more mature and that gives horses like him a lot of confidence. It’s got so much to do with self confidence.”

Upgrade (10-1, Joel Rosario) will try to break the mold and become a Grade 2 winner. Nihei is realistic, but sees a notable improvement in her horse.

“He’s just progressively gotten bet-ter,” said Nihei. “His attitude is for the better, he’s staying really sound, so there are lots of things I like.”

Nihei went out on her own in 2007 after graduating from Todd Pletcher’s barn. In five years she has won sev-eral stakes including her first Saratoga stakes win with Artest in the Quick Call July 26.

“Success has lots of endpoints and everybody defines it a little differently,” said Nihei. “I guess I kind of feel like I’m still looking for success. A lot of (my success) I attribute to being fortu-nate and having really supportive and understanding owners. A lot of it’s fo-cus, a lot of it’s elbow grease.”

The progress derailed with a trip to Woodbine for the Grade 2 Highlander last time out June 24. Sent off the favorite, Surfrider never threatened and finished ninth – done in by a firm turf course and a rapid pace that produced a final time of 1:07 3/5 for 6 furlongs. Kenneally dismissed the effort.

“The turf was extremely firm and I think he likes a little more cut in the ground,” the trainer said Thurs-day morning. “We should get a good turf course. There’s been some rain, there’s more rain coming. It won’t be a problem for this horse. Good ground or even yielding ground, he’ll be fine.”

run through the JungleChad Brown saddles Corporate Jungle, a 4-year-

old colt looking for his fourth win this year. The Gi-ant’s Causeway colt enters today’s race coming off of a disappointing loss in the Grade I Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park, finishing fifth after three consecutive wins prior to that.

“This winter the horse really blossomed down at Gulfstream,” said Brown. “He got a big win in the Appleton, a Grade III down there. We mapped out a schedule of a series of races for the horse if he was healthy. He was training well and this was always on it. He had a very unlucky trip the last time out in the Shoemaker in California. He was wide the entire race and it compromised him severely but he only got beat by about three lengths in the end. I think that if he can save a little more ground than he did last time he could be right there.”

Although he breaks from the seventh post position today, Corporate Jungle has proven in the past he can get the job done from the outside, winning from post positions 8 and 10, earlier this year.

Corporate Jungle has never run on any surface be-sides the turf. In fact, all but one of his starts came at the same distance as today’s Fourstardave, one mile. Four for seven lifetime at the distance, the Gary and Mary West owned colt returns to Saratoga for another trip on the inner turf, a year after breaking his maiden at the Spa.

After nearly two months of speedy works in the mornings at Saratoga, Corporate Jungle seems poised for another trip to the winner’s circle.

“He’s training very well,” said Brown. “How fast

they work doesn’t really hedge my opinion much but the manor in which he does it gives me confidence. The horse is on top of his game right now.”

– ryan Jones

yield Bogey tries to come from weedsPat Kelly knows he picked a tough spot to find

Yield Bogey’s first win since 2010, but the trainer also knows he doesn’t have many options. Fox Ridge Farm’s 8-year-old gelding can’t quite sprint 5 1/2 fur-longs anymore and he won’t get any 6- or 7-furlong turf opportunities until Belmont’s fall meet.

So the four-time winner tries tough company in the Fourstardave.

“He won a two-turn mile race at Aqueduct early on,” said Kelly. “ He hasn’t be able to close the deal in two years. In the long races at Belmont, he’s been popping out of the gate and no one’s wanted the lead. A lot of people think he’s going to be one of the speeds (today), but he doesn’t have to be. His best race is do-ing something else. I’d love to stalk and pounce but that’s what all the other ones do.”

This year, the homebred finished third in the Jaipur and Poker at Belmont and was fifth going 5 1/2 fur-longs here July 21. Last year, he finished second in the Jaipur and Poker, the former by a head to today’s foe Right One. Edgar Prado takes the return call.

Now in his fifth racing season, Yield Bogey broke his maiden going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga in 2008. He makes his 31st career start today, but has not mel-lowed much. Kelly remembers watching the horse’s first start via simulcast while running another old pro, Evening Attire, at Philadelphia Park.

“I kept seeing bits and pieces of a horse flying through the air and stuff,” Kelly said. “Turned out it was him. They had a hell of a time with him. He was a gelding, he’d never made a peep, we’d schooled him and he wasn’t a problem. He’s still a problem and we have to saddle him on the walk. You’d think by now he’d be over all that. He’s a tough old character.”

Two weeks ago Hibiscus Stable’s Elusive Jozi won a $20,000 claimer moved off the turf to a sloppy main track.

She pulled off the exact same feat in Friday’s 10th race.

You can call it déjà vu all over again for the 5-year-old, the only difference being that this time trainer Chris Englehart knew his horse could do it.

“I was more excited about running her after last time,” he said. “It was a complete surprise last time with her handling the mud, but it’s nice to know she can turf or dirt now.”

While she just avoided a scratch because of the mud last time out, this time was the total opposite as Engle-hart was happy to see the rain Friday.

So, apparently, was Elusive Jozi. She broke out of the gate in the lead and never

dropped below second in the eight-horse field. The daughter of Johannesburg had the lead at

the top of stretch and blew away the field from that

point, winning the 5 ½-furlong claimer by 6 lengths in 1:04.63.

Asked about the two-week turnaround, Englehart said, “She’s much better at 5 ½ furlongs than 6, which is what it’ll be when they go back to Belmont. So we wanted to take advantage of Saratoga while we have it.”

The repeat win clearly delighted the Kentucky-bred’s ownership group.

“To come up here and win like this, we’re loving life,” said Hibiscus Stable’s Al Schwab said before heaping praise on jockey David Cohen.

“He’s the man,” Schwab said. That makes Jozi “the lady.”

• Some held umbrellas. Some wore raincoats. Some just got wet.And then there was owner Patsy Symons. When 2-year-old Effie Trinket trudged home with

a win in the second race, Symons’ nattily attired fam-ily marched into the winner’s circle as if that sun had been shining all day.

No protection from the rain needed.“Rain or not, it’s a perfect day when you win,” she

said.Symons’ Saratoga-bred filly gave her plenty of rea-

son to cheer throughout the 5 ½-furlong race, a New York-bred maiden.

Named for a Hunger Games charac-ter, Effie Trinket sat in second and took the lead from Carla Sweetrevenge at the halfway mark. She comfortably gal-loped for home in 1:06.21.

After the win, Symons put her arms around the duo she affectionately called “my guys,” trainer Rick Violette and jockey Alan Garcia.

Given the sloppy track, Violette wasn’t sure that Symons’ clan would end up as happy as they did.

“How she’d do became an un-known,” said the trainer. “I don’t do a lot of work in the morning on wet race-tracks, so it was really a question of if they like or not, and she did.”

If Violette has his way, the horse could be headed for bigger things.

“I could see us going into open com-pany at some point because I think she’s got a lot of talent,” he said.

• On a day that the National Muse-um of Racing Hall of Fame honored its 2012 class, the Spa roared for a future Hall of Famer in another sport – New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera.

Owner Tom Andreadakis was more than willing to share the spotlight after his colt Regal Strike won the third race, a $20,000 claimer.

“It’s OK,” he said, smiling, “I want (trainer Rick Dutrow) to get all the at-tention and he’s down at Aqueduct, so Rivera can have it today.”

The 4-year-old started from the out-side in the five-horse field and held the lead from wire-to-wire, hanging on to win the 6 ½ furlong race by a half-length for jockey Ramon Dominguez.

“I wasn’t worried at any point. Regal Strike always comes back for me,” said Andreadakis, partners with Rev It Up Racing Stable in the son of Tenpins.

It was the third win in seven 2012 starts for the Kentucky-bred, whom Rivera kept his distance from. The All-Star closer may not fear Major League hitters, but earlier in the day he admit-ted to being “petrified” of horses.

•  Trainer  Terri  Pompay  wondered what to expect from Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence’s Insolvent when the fifth race (a 2-year-old maid-en) moved from the turf to the slop. Though looking forward to running on

turf, Pompay figured the filly’s pedigree would make her like the messy terrain.

The daughter of Big Brown didn’t disappoint in her second career start.

“She proved that she liked (the slop),” Pompay said. “She opened up, but we still wanted to know if she’d fin-ish.”

And finish the two-year-old did.Jockey Javier Castellano told Pom-

pay after the race that he had “plenty of horse left” to complete win, which came by 1 ¾ lengths in 1:05.83.

Of Insolvent’s first start, a third at Monmouth last month, Pompay said, “It was a new experience for her and she got a little tired,” adding that the horse had more “kick” this time.

Pompay said that it’s too soon to tell where the filly goes from here, but that it’s good to know she’s comfortable on either turf or dirt.

• The first question wasn’t even done being asked when trainer Jim Ryerson chimed in with his thoughts on the sixth race, a maiden for New York-breds go-ing 7 furlongs.

“I should’ve had her on slop,” he said about the first win in 11 career starts for Well Spring Stables’ Royal Suspicion.

The 3-year-old broke out of the gate at the front of the pack, but quickly dropped back and sat just off the pace for most of the way. It was a two-horse race in the stretch, with the Raffie’s Majesty filly in a tight battle with the Ampa’s Girl.

Royal Suspicion won by a neck in 1:26.91.

“Even with the move (off the turf), she’s trained well up here so we expect-ed a good run,” Ryerson said.

• The rain was predicted. What hap-pened in the first race was not.

The only race of the day to be run on turf was a $35,000 claimer at 5 ½ furlongs.

And it was as much of a wild card as any, with 22-1 shot Luigi P, owned and trained by Anthony Bizelia, bring-ing home his first win since 2008.

The 7-year-old was last in the nine-horse field at the three-eighths pole, but began to make his move and swept past in the stretch. It was anyone’s game as they turned for home, but the Rick Sutherland-bred gelding emerged victo-rious by 1 ¾ lengths, beating Taproot and Shotinthefog..

“It wasn’t easy,” jockey Abel Lozca-no said. “I guess he liked the wet turf. I liked it because we won.”

People trickled into Fasig-Tipton’s sales pavilion an hour early Friday morning, hoping to snatch a good seat for the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony. There was a wide range of visitors that waited to see Planet, Anthony Ham-ilton, Robert Wheeler, Ghostzapper, Roger Attfield, and John Velazquez of-ficially become legends.

Ed Bowen, chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee began the ceremony as he introduced returning Hall of Famers Jerry Bailey, Carl Nafzger, Kent Desormeaux, Randy Romero, Shug McGaughey, Nick Zito, Eddie Maple, Janet Elliot, Angel Cordero, Edgar Pra-do, Bill Mott, D. Wayne Lukas, Chris McCarron, Ron Turcotte, Jose Santos, and Allen Jerkens stood in front of the crowd. Heroes, all in one place at one time.

Planet, known as the “Great Red Fox” won 27 of 31 races in the mid-1800s. Sarah Wright the great-grand-daughter of Planet’s owner Major Thomas Doswell accepted the remark-

ably skilled Thoroughbred’s award. Anthony Hamilton, also known as

“the Black Demon” and the only Afri-can American jockey to win the Brook-lyn, Suburban and the Metropolitan was inducted (like Planet) by the His-toric Review Committee.

Honor, respect, and devotion to duty where the words Wheeler’s grandson Jeff chose to honor his grandfather, whose extraordinary career lasted more than a half-century. He trained Hall of Famer Silver Spoon among others in a long list of stars.

Javier Castellano leaned against the wall in the back of the room as he watched clips of himself guiding Ghost-zapper home. Owner/breeder Frank Stronach’s wife, Elfrida, accepted the plaque for the 2004 Horse of the Year.

Attfield spoke so well and so com-fortably, it was as if he was having a conversation with friends at dinner. He was brave enough to tell a joke, not an easy thing to do in front of a large crowd. The audience roared with laughter at the punch line, a job well

done. Attfield then segued into a more serious top-ic. A trainer who is renowned for the longevity and health of his horses, he said he was “saddened” to witness the issues in horse racing.

Trainer Todd Pletcher took the stage to introduce the final acceptance of the morning – Velazquez.

“We all know what a terrific rider Johnny is, or terrific jockey he is, more importantly than that to me is that he is a terrific role model, terrific husband, caring father, just an all-around really super human being,” said Pletcher as he was interrupted by a roar of applause. “No one deserves it more.”

Velazquez approached the podium. His daughter Lerina turned on her video camera. Her father’s ex-pression showed a series of feelings: proud, embar-rassed, nervous, anxious, sad, happy, humble. He had a paper in his hand, notes to help him remember all of the people who helped him get to where he stood. He spoke, paused, put his head down and walked away from the microphone. He cleared his throat and tried again, losing sight of his paper. It’s difficult to re-member every word, every thank you, every memory Velazquez said during his acceptance speech, but to forget how it made you feel? Now that’s impossible.

Three days prior, the Fasig-Tipton arena was filled with high hopes for future champions as yearlings were paraded around the stage for the Selected Sale. Friday, the two-level room was filled with apprecia-tion, admiration and tears. Trainer Graham Motion (Velazquez’s friend and the man who legged up the jockey on Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom) sat in the upper level, a few rows back. His elbows rested on his knees, and his hands covered his face, only his eyes were showing. Velazquez’s wife Leona wiped tears from her face as she gazed at her husband trying to find words, stepping to the podium to stand next to him for support.

“He was so emotional,” she said. “I was not ex-pecting that at all. He doesn’t like getting awards and he was like ‘Oh my God I want this to be over with, you know I just want it to be done already.’ I think he was expecting Todd to be funny, because Todd is really funny and he jokes around a lot, but he was emotional. Todd was welling up. I could feel Johnny next to me. At that point I knew it wasn’t going to be

what he wrote down.”There was a sense of irony. There stood a man who

has won the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont twice, 11 Breeders’ Cup races among many other accolades, and here he was before a room of mentors, co-work-ers, employers, strangers, family and friends with no filter, just pure raw emotion.

You felt lucky to be there.

Only days after the final gavel fell, and Hip 189 of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Sale was sold, each horse of the Selected Sale have shipped out of town, and an entirely new crop of yearlings has found a temporary home in the barns on the Fasig-Tipton sales ground.

The Preferred Sale of New York-breds runs tonight and Sunday. Numbers have increased so much over last year that the start time for the auction had to be moved to earlier in the night, with a start time of 6:30 p.m.

The 260 yearlings in this year’s Preferred Sales rep-resent a 20-percent increase over last year. Fasig-Tip-ton president Boyd Browning spoke of the principal reason behind the influx of New York-breds.

“With the health of this particular state program on a very sound course, the New York-bred is going to be a valuable racing and sales commodity for many years to come,” said Browning.

With the opening of the casino at Aqueduct Race-

track last fall, purses at NYRA operated racetracks have seen a jump.

Trainer Linda Rice sees the advantages to owning a New York-bred and racing on the New York circuit.

Rice trains 3-year-old gelding, Alarmed Ndanger-ous, recent winner of a maiden race at Saratoga. Over his two-year career, the New York-bred has raced ex-clusively on the state’s three major tracks.

“The purses are great,” said Rice. “The New York-

bred program is terrific. I’m a big believer, a big sup-porter in it and I think there are enough advantages to keep him home.”

And why wouldn’t she? Thanks to the casino, purses have skyrocketed. At

Saratoga alone purses have increased by more than 30 percent over last year. In 2011, the average purse pay-

out per racing day was $670,000. This year, that figure has jumped to a stag-gering $900,000.

For New York-breds, the rewards are even greater. For example today’s card features two races exclusively for New York-breds with a combined purse of $100,000. Meanwhile in three other races on the day worth a total of $252,000 there are bonuses total-ing $47,980 or 19 percent of the race’s purses available if a New York-bred horse wins the race.

With all this money up for grabs, it’s no wonder there is increased demand for horses bred right here in New York.

“You go to the racetrack and you see maiden races with purses of $90,000,” Browning said. “It gives people a much greater reason economically to be in-volved in the business right now. The New York-bred program is so strong.”

And at the Fasig-Tipton sales ground there are 260 horses up for grabs over the next two nights.

At the sales grounds Friday, buyers, consignors, handlers, and horses filled

nearly every inch between barns. It took a great deal of effort to weave around horses and find a spot to observe all the commotion.

In between barns 1 and 2, occupied predominently by Hidden Brook and Paramount Sales, horses were shuffled through the on-and-off rain so buyers could inspect, touch, watch, and pon-der.

Hip 250, a City Zip filly out of Lizzie Toon, consigned by Hidden Brook waited patiently in the rain as a buyer walked next to her, rubbed her neck, jotted down a few notes and walked away. A couple feet away, another Hid-den Brook filly by City Zip but out of Riserva, flicked her short rain-soaked tail, sending water spiraling through the air.

Although the Selected Sale saw a slight decline in revenue over last year, don’t expect the same trend in the Pre-ferred Sales. Added benefits over the past year, for New York-breds should entice potential buyers. Fasig-Tipton looks to continue its strong perfor-mance last year in the Preferred Sales af-ter it increased gross revenue nearly 83 percent, and average price 38 percent, from 2010 to 2011.

Class. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony – no matter

who gets inducted or how long the speeches last – is about class.

The class of the past inductees showing up every year. They wear their blazers, come to the front of the room, get saluted once more.

The class of the connections made over the eras. Allen Jerkens went into the Hall in 1975 and he was there Friday, part of the honoree lineup. Ron Tur-cotte rode all-time greats Northern Dancer and Sec-retariat and there he was again, proud of his career once again. Chris McCarron, Kent Desormeaux and Edgar Prado each rocketed through their apprentice years back in Maryland – and sat in the same row Friday. Angel Cordero, still the king of Saratoga all these years later, received the loudest response – until Jerkens. “Chiiieeef” rumbled through the audience as he stood up.

The class of jobs well done. Trainers Bill Mott, Nick Zito, Shug McGaughey, Wayne Lukas, Jerkens, Janet Elliot finished work at the barn, cleaned up and came to the ceremony as Hall of Famers and fans like the rest of us.

The class of the presenters. Friday, David Willmot and Todd Pletcher introduced Roger Attfield and John Velazquez, respectively, with grace and aplomb. Tom

Durkin steered the ship, the only emcee who also holds sport coats.

The class of the venue. Now a few years in, Fasig-Tipton’s renovated sales pavilion sparkles for a full house of Hall of Famers, officials, fans.

The class of inviting the public. I’ve never been to any other sport’s Hall of Fame induction and I’m sure they’re similar but the open door to racing’s fans – from children to that guy with the disposable camera – to come along for the ride should never change.

The class of the presentation. Keeneland’s G.D. Hi-eronymus puts together the video clips every year and they were again stellar – mixing the history of Civil War era horse Planet and jockey Anthony Hamilton with the sheer brilliance of Ghostzapper, the undu-plicated success of Attfield, the old-school horseman-ship of Robert Wheeler. And how about the mustache Velazquez sported back in the day?

The class of real history. Hamilton and Planet starred in the 1800s, a time of great unrest and un-certainty. I’m floored we know anything about them at all.

The class of the recipients. Humans truly humbled make for great theater.

Attfield was smooth, told a great joke (in the ver-sion I heard the jockey yells “Alley Oop” at the fences) and paid proper tribute to the animals and the people who made his career happen. He also gave a miniature state of the sport address, telling racing to “get rid of the rubbish.” Put the Hall of Famer on the list of po-tential keynote speakers.

Leaning on a cane, Sarah Wright, great-grand-daughter of Planet’s owner Maj. Thomas Doswell, sported an orange top in honor of her her family’s

Bullfield Stable’s racing silks, proudly spoke of the horse they called “The Great Red Fox.” Planet’s pic-ture hung in the front hall. Now his plaque hangs in The Hall.

Wheeler’s grandson Jeff mentioned how proud his family was of “Gramps,” who passed away in 1992.

The class of the horse. Elfrida Stronach, wife of owner/breeder Frank, thanked the Hall for Ghostzap-per’s honor – then brought up how much the stallion enjoys eating carrots at the farm.

And then there was Velazquez. If there’s one thing he can do other than ride a

horse, it’s talk. Ask him about a horse or a race and be prepared to keep up. Years ago, I talked to him about Ashado and off he went, comparing her to Serena Williams while sitting outside the jocks’ room at Sara-toga. He clucked, he chirped, he clapped his hands, he pointed, he walked around, he rolled his eyes and he kept talking. My recorder nearly gave out. Friday, the Hall of Fame moment left him speechless. A life, a career came to a point right there in the sales pavil-ion and Velazquez couldn’t hold it. He put down his notes, took a loooong pause, crossed his arms, inhaled deeply, stepped away from the podium. The crowd brought him back, with a settling wave of powerful applause. His wife, Leona, joined him at the podium, steadying her man. He talked about his mother, his father, his wife, his children, a long list of people who influenced his life – now fellow Hall of Famer Angel Cordero, Ralph Theroux Sr., Pletcher, Cordero’s late wife Marjorie, John Hertler, Zito, Mickey Preger, fa-ther-in-law Leo O’Brien, John DeStefano and on and on and on.

Now that was class.

Roger Attfield sat down between two radio hosts, maneuvered a headset over his ears, held his Hall of Fame plaque in his lap and began to answer questions, as quietly, politely, delicately as he’s trained his horses for the past 42 years. The British-born, Canadian-based trainer joined Thoroughbred Racing’s Hall of Fame Friday morning.

Dapper as ever, Attfield seemed to hesitate when he was asked to remove his suit coat and slide on the navy blazer with the Hall of Fame patch on the lapel. It ru-ined his look.

After speaking, posing, signing and shaking, Attfield stuck to his word and joined Mike Penna and Jude Feld on HRRN’s broadcast of the induction ceremony. Speeches had been made, tears had flowed, photos had flashed, the pavilion had all but emptied, only some O’Brien children running roughshod on the bottom floor and a few window-shoppers inspecting the art.

Attfield looked like a boy on his first school-bus ride, holding his plaque and answering questions. We leaned in to hear him, waiting for his words, his thoughts, from his childhood days with horse swap-pers and vagabonds in Newbury, England, to his first of eight Queen’s Plate winners, Norcliffe, in 1976 to his years as private trainer for the Canadian power-house Kinghaven Farm to his first Breeders’ Cup win last year with Perfect Shirl.

“There are magical moments in your life, for me to go into the American Hall of Fame after going into the Canadian Hall of Fame, is very special for me,” Attfield began. “Norcliffe launched my career, the Queen’s Plate is such an important race in Canada, he was a very special horse, after that, the years I had with Kinghaven were special, we had some great moments, there are too many races to pick one out, the Breeders’ Cup was the icing on the cake, in the respect that I had had some near misses without having a lot of oppor-tunity to run in those kind of races, with a homebred, from a stallion I trained, it was all very special.”

In a biting world where grudges are easier to come by than accolades, Attfield has earned his peers’ re-spect, sending out competitive horses who look the part and run the part.

There is nothing in racing as synonymous with class as a Roger Attfield horse, compliant in the task, decked out in a navy and red quarter sheet, leather bri-dle stitched in the king’s court, checkerboard across its hind-quarters, returning year and year, winning year after year.

Asked about Musketier, 10, and Simmard, 7, who battled the length of the stretch in Grade 3 Singspiel this summer, Attfield didn’t really see it as heroic or out of the ordinary.

“I think, basically, it’s just common sense and old-fashioned horsemanship, really, if you know your horses and you’re around your horses as much as I am, they’ll sort of tell you if you’re over-doing it or under-doing it,” Attfield said. “You’ve got to catch the de-tails almost before they happen, as far as keeping them sound is concerned, you’ve got to pick up on the red lights or when the lights are flickering, before some-

thing bad happens, you can’t get that right all the time, but, basically, it’s just keeping your horse healthy and happy, it’s just horsemanship.”

Asked if he learned this the hard way, Attfield smiled and paused.

You could almost see him view his life, the projector with the big wheels of film, clicking, clicking, click-ing before finally lighting up the wall. Gypsies, horse shows, amateur steeplechase career, emigrating to Canada, climbing the rock.

“The hard way is when you look at all the years you were starving to death, I grew up riding at quite an early age, growing up in England, my parents couldn’t afford to buy me ponies, so I did it all with dealers, horse traders and farmers,” Attfield said. “I was a de-cent enough rider to work my way up the ranks that way, I was lucky to be around a lot of really good, old-time horsemen, I always asked a lot of questions to try to learn and I’m still trying to learn. That’s what life’s about.”

Asked about the people who he admired, emulated or had taught him the most, Attfield paused again, thinking about his life, his mentors, his heroes, the film again ticking past his eyes.

“I really admire Allen Jerkens, I think he’s a really good horseman, he’s a little bit like me in the respect that I don’t like a lot of conversation, a lot of talk, ‘show me, don’t tell me.’ He’s a hands-on guy and I have a lot of respect for him,” Attfield said. “There are some old guys, way back, when I was in my early teens, Guy Russell, nobody would have ever heard of him but he was a great horseman . . . ”

Must have been a great teacher too.
