Cranes and Communities Animation and Landscape projectDevised by artist and animator Sean Harris in collaboration with Somerset ArtWorks, this unique project will see a mesmerising moving image artworkpresented within a beacon in the landscape; the focus of a series of outdoorevents taking place across the Somerset Levels and Moors at the end of the year.Taking the crane’s ability to transcend boundaries and fences as a metaphor, as itstrives to come to terms with the vagaries of its environment, the projectcelebrates the free-flying creative impulse that resides in all human minds enablingnew solutions and pathways to be found. For more information and details of forthcoming workshop opportunities see theproject blog cranesandcommunities.wordpress.com

Somerset is a county rich in variedlandscapes, towns, villages and artisticcommunities. Our studios may be aroom, a barn, a shed, somewhere wework alone or share our space withothers. PAINTING, PRINTS, DRAWING‘Nature’ or ‘Nurture’? God given gift or learned skills? ‘Continuity’ is an exploration ofcreative and intellectual development. Just as with language there are distinct stages ofartistic development most clearly demonstrated in the stages of drawing. This exhibition involves children from across the King’s Foundation, from the toddler tothe teenager studying GCE A level art. It provides many fascinating insights into theintellectual and psychological development of young people. The journey evolves from early scribbles and schematic drawings, through the pre-adolescent crisis and beyond. Four selected artists almost at their peak working in pop up studios at the Bruton ArtFactory during Somerset Open Studios. MeMe Marey MeMe: Marey deals with emotionalresponses to events, situations and memories in her own life. Her paintings are workedand reworked through the use of paint or charcoal on canvas on paper. Mirabel Williams:By creating delicate flowerscapes Mirabel Williams attempts to freeze nature's process andpreserve its beauty using pressed flowers, carefully tangled with thread. Sabrina RowanHamilton: Sabrina Rowan Hamilton is a painter, photographer, poet, curator andcollaborator. She splits her time between London and Somerset finding inspiration in thespaces in between. Benjamin Lowsley-Williams: Principally a stone carver, BenjaminLowsley-Williams also engages in all forms of sculpture as well as drawing andphotography. In his recent carvings and geometric drawings, he explores the notion ofsymmetry in nature. These free form sculptures and calculated drawings bespeak a distinctdialect within a common language of geometry and stone carving.

Sue Lowe’s work is concerned with layers and surfaces, drawing inspiration fromlandscape. The geology of the Watchet beaches is a current theme in her richly-textured, limited edition prints.Valerie Berry is also inspired by the textures and contours of the West Somersetcoastline. Creating hand-built and wheel-thrown vessels alongside sculptural forms, withstoneware and terracotta clay.Georgina Towler uses paint to visually interpret and capture spaces, responding to theenvironments she encounters. Her paintings are not traditional observations butmetaphorical and suggestive spaces - repositioning the landscape.

The paintings are personal journeys andslowly evolve, stroke by dab by flick, timeover time until adding anything morewould be superfluous. The love of theprocess, the fluidity of the materials, thevisual joy of placing the colours and thenthe quiet delight when it all comestogether keeps me going when, inevitably, it all goes to hell in ahandbasket, destruction and creation isthe name of the game. And occasionally, when I get out of the way for longenough, the paintings make themselves.19 The Crescent, Taunton, TA1 4EBT: 07801 444811E: [email protected]: www.elizabethearley.comDirections: We are opposite County Hall.
